Gold Discovery Journal Of Azariah Smith

Rate this book
Azariah Smith's journal is one of only two eyewitness accounts of the discovery of gold by James Marshall at Sutter's Fort on January 24, 1848. Introduced and annotated by western historian David L. Bigler, Smith's journal is a compelling account of an average citizen experiencing the making of western history.

A really fascinating look at the old west as a man journeys from Illinois to California. Harrowing occasionally and funny at times. I learned a lot about the American West in 1858!

Well done short account of his time in the Mormon Battalion and how it was to be in on the discovery of gold in California in 1848. He missed his mother too much to stay around and get rich! But he survived to an old age and went back for the 50th anniversary of the discovery (most of the others there died early).
