1.5/5 stars

The story started at a very slow pace. I kind of groaned when I realized that the heroine has insta-love-syndrome. I mean the story just felt like anything else around there. I asked myself, "What does this book have that makes it stand out or different?" I tried to find something but I didn't.

I didn't fell for the male lead, Ben. And I will tell you that is very much unusual. I mean, almost every YA book I read made me wish that those heroes are real. I didn't connect with the characters. I mean when I knew who the hell is behind those events in the book, I just thought "Okay." Nothing mindblowing.

I don't know. I feel kind of detached from the story. It didn't reel me in. Somewhere between the book, i just wished that i could finish it soon enough. I'm not a writer but I knew that it's hard creating a story. I just want to find something that other books did not have yet. Maybe others will find this interesting but it just wasn't for me.

First Impression is a spooky paranormal mystery with a side of sweet romance. I was hooked after only the first sentence, which is supernatural in itself because I have never fallen for a book that fast. It’s the best first line ever.

“I watched for the owl with the Hogwarts letter to appear on my 11th birthday, but he never did.”

How could anyone not be intrigued by that line?

We follow our main character, Chira, to school the next day where she meets a brand new student, Ben. She’s got instant feelings for him, but never in the story does it feel like insta-love to me. I mean, it’s totally realistic for a girl’s heart to race or for a blush to creep across her face when she meets a guy she thinks is cute. I know because I’ve been there before. Chira doesn’t have a group of friends; she isn’t popular in school. She’s an outcast with only one friend, Tasha, who is also an outcast of sorts. Chira is Ben’s “tour guide” for the day because she just happened to be in the right place at the right time. The story starts out at a casual pace allowing the reader to get acquainted with the players, and before you know it things incline toward the creepier side, but nothing is as it seems.

The characters in First Impression are awesome – especially Ben! He seems a little strange when we first meet him (no, this is not THE first impression being referred to – that’s much more comprehensive), but as the story progresses he turns into a sweetheart. I was also really impressed by the twists and turns in this plot. I thought I had everything figured out, but it turns out I was way off the beaten path. The ordinary evolves into the extraordinary in a seamless manner and the pacing is perfect. There’s a bit of everything in this tale — intrigue, romance, and true paranormal creepiness. This is a fabulous paranormal mystery that will haunt readers of all ages. I can’t wait for my teenage son to read it!

I received a copy of this book to review for my stop on the blog tour found at Donnie Darko Girl.

First Impression is a layered mystery with the paranormal mixed in and characters I quickly became invested in. I was instantly hooked from the very beginning - there was no question I was going to love this book.

The story began with Chira showing Ben, a new transfer to her school, around. He's mysterious and doesn't speak much in the beginning while Chira finds herself attracted to him. Sometimes in books, the less a boy speaks, the more attractive he becomes to girls. I think Chira wanted to find out what he's all about - this boy who has an owl that apparently follows him wherever he goes.

Chira is an outcast at her school but has a loyal best friend, Tasha. Tasha is the one who comes up with the idea to meet the group of classmates at the old schoolhouse, reportedly haunted, to check it out as a possibility to hold a Halloween party there. I got the impression Tasha is a lot of fun to hang out with and probably talks Chira into going along with ideas like these often. I really loved Tasha and her family.

There's a definite creep factor in First Impression, subtle at first, that builds up over time. I couldn't stop myself from shivering when Chira and Tasha start investigating the old schoolhouse, especially because of the creepy old piano! Plus, it's October with Halloween looming on the horizon, a creepy time of year as it is.

First Impression was a quick read - I finished it in one sitting - and had mystery with a paranormal element, some romance, and likable characters. I only wish it had been a little longer. The next one can't come out quickly enough!

“First Impression (Shadow Maven #1)” by Pauline Creeden is a wonderful paranormal read for young adults.
Chira, our heroine, is the only poor girl in a school of rich kids, but she is intelligent and hard-working and has one good friend. When she is charged with showing new boy Ben around, she has a feeling she knows him already. He certainly has a mystery or a secret about him.
Several of the youngsters meet up to go to a haunted school building and things take a turn for the worse then. Shortly after Chira’s best friend has an accident, and this is just the beginning.
Chira is a fantastic protagonist to carry the series, very honest and down to earth, she is a far cry from super heroines and super-powered girls that take on the world single handed. Equally, Ben is not your regular hero either. They are both a pleasure to read about and convincing and easily relatable as characters.
The story is well paced and unfolds slowly until one by one the parts of the plot come together. There is more than the haunting part but you will need to find out for yourself.
The book opens with a Harry Potter reference, which I found particularly well chosen since “First Impression” is accomplished in a more understated and in my opinion rewarding way, even though both have similar charms.
This is a very enjoyable paranormal read with excellent role models. Recommended to all fans of the genre.

First Impression is book 1 in Pauline Creeden’s new, A Shadow Maven Paranormal series. It is a fast read that is full of twist and turns.

Teenage characters are sometimes hit or miss with me but with this story I really liked them. They all seem genuine and realistic and not too full of angst and drama. Chira is quite, loyal, and wishing for a little magic in her life. Ben is mysterious and has an old world charm about him as he battles the forces of evil with his gifts.

The mystery and paranormal aspects are very well done. The killer turned out to be someone I didn’t expect and the creepiness of the haunted school house and the “accidents” kept me turning the pages in anticipation.

Shadow Maven is a solid start to another great series by Pauline Creeden. I am looking forward to meeting up with Chira, Ben, Matt, and Tasha again in book 2.

Summary: Quick read that is full of mystery, spookiness, and light romance. A great start to a new YA Paranormal Series. Clean read that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to teen readers.

Amazing Story!Pauline Creeden is a superb stoyteller! I couldn't put the book down, it was like it had a hold over me the min I picked it up. the scenes were so fantastic and the mystery so intriguing! I am usually able to figure out who has done it before the end of the book but this one blew me away! the twists and turns were so elaborate that even I was fooled. This is defiantly one of the great ones!

Chira has always been the outcast, the unwanted, but thanks to her one and only best friend tasha life at least has been bearable. Kids have always liked to spread nasty rumors about her but as long as she had her best friend by her side she could weather any storm, That is until the fateful night they all decided to sneak into the local haunted Schoolhouse.

Ever since that night the kids that witnessed the event have been disappearing and dropping like flies. Tasha is in the hospital fighting for her life and Chira may be next. The only bright spot in her life is Ben, who ever since that night has become her living shadow and will protect her at all costs. But can she really trust him?

Let me just say WOW!!! I LOVED this book!! The only problem I had with it is that it ended....lol!! Everything about this book was excellent, the story building, the character building, the plot line, the ending, everything. The intereaction between the main , & the secondary characters was exemplary. I actually experienced their emotions, while I was reading. Tis rare that an author can make the reader feel so strongly with & for the characters in their books. The drama & the mystery kept you on the edge of your seat, and while the mystery of this particular story was solved, I have a feeling we're going to find out that there is still much we don't know about the hero of the story, Ben. I'm excited to see where the story will take us & I can't wait for the next book to come out. If I could I would give this book more than 5 stars. Well done Pauline!! Well done!!

I really enjoyed this book! It was a great paranormal book with just enough mystery and romance to keep the pages turning! Filled with strong characters and a unique storyline, the reader really doesn't know how it's going to wrap up until the en. The characters have depth and complications to make them interesting. I can't wait to read another book in this series!

First Impression is a phenomenal start to a brilliant series! The twists and turns will have you reevaluating what you think you know and second guessing what is right before your eyes. This is not a simple story, but it is a beautiful one filled with wonderful characters and a storyline that will hold you captive. Watching the events unfold before me was like watching a true masterpiece come to life. I love books that really make you think, and this one did that and so much more. You don’t want to miss out on this unique experience!

Chira Kelly has had her life turned upside down at home and at school through events beyond her control. She is determined to live her life without needing anyone or anything. Sometimes life has a wicked sense of humor, and this time is no exception. Not only does Chira discover that she does need someone, but that other person quickly and quietly makes himself a permanent part of her life without even asking for her permission. In an unexplained turn of events, an innocent trip to a haunted house will forever alter the lives of those she loves, and only one person can help her make sense of it all. Will she have the courage to dig for the truth, or will she let someone else take on that burden?

My heart went out to Chira. I could easily relate to her and all of her personal problems. I had my own burdens to carry and struggles I had to fight through to get to where I am today. You don’t become weak after going through that. In fact, these experiences make you stronger. They mold you and change you into someone who is scarred and weathered by the storms of life. They also leave you with a deep longing to belong and be known. When those possibilities aren’t available, you push onward becoming numb to the pain and emptiness. Chira has grown hard by her experiences, but her heart is still desperately longing for the love and acceptance that she has been denied. She is finally ready for someone special to notice her and cherish her.

I was completely blown away by the other characters in this book. Ben is just downright awesome! His mysterious past, and his unique talent is just wow. I haven’t read about such an interesting character for a very long time, and I just couldn’t get enough. I hope that in the next part of this series we learn even more about him. Tasha is such a good friend to Chira, and I loved her heart. She brought life and joy to Chira when no one else could. She was Chira’s heart, and I am anxious to learn more about her.

Pauline Creeden is an amazing author. Her talent is so diverse and rich that I have yet to read anything from her that I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed. This is definitely no exception to that, and I think it might even be the best story that she written to date. I cant wait to read what’s next in this series! The originality and heart in this story reminded me of the writing of Ted Dekker who started and inspired my love of reading.

General Review (No Spoilers)

I loved this book, it was not exactly what I was expecting, it was better. It was very YA but with mystery, paranormal and romance. I was not exactly sure to make of the paranormal part. It was not magic or vampires or zombies, it was something new, once I got my head around it, I really liked it. I liked the characters, they were fun and relatable. The story flowed well and was exciting. I was kept guessing at what was going to happen. Ben, sounds like a dream. He is good looking but not full of himself and really cares for others, my kind of book man. I really liked Tasha as a character, just wish we saw more of her.

It was the first book in a long time that I have sat and read in one sitting. It really was that good.

Favourite Quote

“I watched for the owl with my Hogwarts letter to appear on my 10th birthday, but he never did. So when an owl taps at my bedroom window near midnight six years too late, I am more confused than elated.”

That’s the very first line to the book. Other than Harry was 11 was not 10 when he got his letter, it’s a very clever start, most youngsters can relate, I know I wanted a letter badly.

5 out of 5 stars.

Step by Step Overview (Spoilers)

0% – Looks like a good fun YA paranormal story. Not sure yet what is paranormal about it but looking forward to finding out.

20% – I am loving the fact that Chira loves her life, it’s no where near perfect but she makes the most of it and does not complain. It’s refreshing for YA. So far it’s a fun read with some hints of possible magic and/or ghosts. I really like Chira and Tasha. They seem great friends and I like how people who think they are gay really don’t care other than it’s gossip.

40% – Not sure what a Shadow Maven is yet but I am enthralled by this story. I cannot seem to put it down. I am hoping Tasha comes out of her coma, she is a fantastic character.

60% – Is a spirit after them or is it coincidence? Ben reminds me of Edward Cullen, just not quite as creepy. I want to know what happened to the ghost girl and what does it have to do with the story?

80% – Okay so did all the people who were downstairs in the haunted house see something or at least Tasha saw something and someone is killing off all 5 of them and making it look supernatural? The person who killed the Fairfax girls perhaps?

100% -Could the killer be Mr Scott? That’s how he knows who to go after? Okay, wow what a great way to end the book, I like how there was some closure with the characters, you get to know how they are after the fact. It also leaves room for more books. Which I would love to read. :)

Who would I recommend to?

Anyone who likes YA paranormal, or a good light-hearted mystery. Fans of books like Fallen and Twilight.

I would like to thank the author for providing me a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This story is on the shorter length, just over 100 pages but it's full steam ahead from the get-go. Do not think you will read this book in interludes, not going to happen. It sucked me right in and before I knew it, I was on the last page. Written from one POV, Chira's, it makes for a great mystery because you don't get to know what's going on in anyone else's head.

What kept this from being a 5 star was that it was such a short story that parts of the story got expedited instead of being allowed to brew slowly and come to fruition on its due time. One minute your one place, the next you are somewhere completely different, which caused me to do a bit of rereading to adjust my feel of the scenery and situations. The whole Shadow Maven persona is touched on but I felt that more should have been put into it. You learn about it but than it's more in the background where it should have been more in the forefront. This is just the first story of more to come and it felt like the author desperately wanted to get it out to go further with the characters which I didn't really mind, because I've already felt a connection with the characters.

The intertwining of the different layers of this story worked very well. You got to learn more about the characters without having to take time away from the mystery at hand. The tragedies were played out well, emotions rung true, and the continuing action was a big bonus. There was definitely a character that was hinted on but no story really grew from which makes me wonder if the author will be touching on this person and bringing bits and pieces of him in as the series goes on. The budding friendship of Chira and Ben is full of wit and an attraction that can't be denied.

Now this book centers around a haunting, rumors, suicides, missing girls, kidnapping, assaults and more. The person behind it all is a well kept secret, until it's time to know. I think that readers 15+ are who this book is for. Those younger may find themselves with even more questions and parents may not take well to the questions they may ask. Having said that, I also feel that this book would interest readers of any gender.

I look forward to reading more of this series and will anxiously await news of books to come.

Goodreads Synopsis: Chira Kelly thought she didn’t need anyone…until she met Ben.
Because of one ugly rumor, Chira lives as an outcast at her school. Which is fine with her, because she works better alone. Always has, always will. And at least she has her one and only true friend, Tasha. When Tasha insists that they join a group to visit a possibly haunted abandoned old schoolhouse, she's wary, but joins her friend. Because of that decision, their lives are in jeopardy as a malevolent spirit targets the group. Tragedies and accidents pick them off one by one, and Chira finds herself drawn to the one person who can see the truth. But can he protect her?

My Review: I really enjoyed reading this short book. It was interesting, and I'm excited for the next book. Once I finished reading it, I saw the link for the authors website and newsletter on my kobo, and ran to my laptop to sign up for it. This was an awesome story about Chira, her friend Tasha, Ben, and Matt, finding out what keeps happening to the kids in their school. Chira isn't really into the whole hanging out with tons of people and partying scene, and usually she just stays at home watching doctor who re-runs (like I do). Her step dad is not really someone she likes to associate herself with, and her mom works throughout most of this story. Though she talks a lot about her dad working at the school, we don't really get to see him in this. I'm not sure if she means her step-dad or her biological dad, but either way we don't get to know him, don't get to see her talk to him, he's basically non-existent in this. Which is fine, he wasn't really important to the story. So Tasha invites Chira to come out to an abandoned school house to check it out and then party with her friends, and bam. There's a ghost. Tasha gets hit by a car, and is in a coma for the rest of the book pretty much. Ben, the new kid, is trying to get closer to Chira, but she doesn't really know if it's safe or not, since she doesn't have very many friends. That's all I'm going to tell you about that. It's an awesome story and I definitely didn't expect what happened, to happen, it was crazy. This book swept me up in it's whirlwind from the very beginning and I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes paranormal, ghosts, and mysteries mixed into that. Definitely check it out. (':

This book is the first in the Shadow Maven series, and I am in love! Pauline Creeden is amazing as always with this supernatural mystery. There are layers within this novel that mix the paranormal in just right that it had me from the start. There was no doubt in my mind that this was going to be a quick read for me and not because it was easy. It was simply because the fact that I knew that I was going to love every single moment of reading it. The story starts is off with Chira showing Ben around school because he was new. I liked that Ben was not super outspoken because it made for the mystery of what was drawing Chira's attraction towards him. I was impressed by the emotion that was able to be felt even though Ben was a character that did not have vertt much dialogue. Ben had a quirk about him also. The quirk was that an owl would follow him whereever he went. This was mysterious and Chira wanted to know more, and quite frankly, so did I. The titling does this book great justice because a first impressions is what ultimately draws someone in or moves them away.

Chira is not popular by any means at her school, but she has a friend that is always there for her, Tasha. I could relate because I was never the popular one in school but friendship that is loyal is sometimes more worth it. I sensed this bond of friendship as soon as Tasha's character was introduced. Tasha wants to meet up with other classmates at a schoolhouse that is supposed to be haunted based on stories. She ultimately wants to host a Halloween party there. What better setting, right? I would be beside myself visiting any place or thing that was supposed to be haunted but Chira was a trooper. Tasha seemed to bring Chira out of her shell. Every girl has a friend like that (or they should) they can bring out just a little more in yourself than you thought you had in you. I enjoyed learning about Tasha and her family.

First Impression has everything that you would want in a paranormal mystery book. Pauline doesn't open it right up and start off like that, but instead leads up to it. I think this is what I enjoyed most about the undertones. The book was not harsh or pushy in any way. This was a quick read that was well worth sitting down with and enjoying. Being that it is the beginning of a series, I can not wait for more paranormal fun from Pauline!

Things are not what they appear.

This story is a perfect blend of mystery and paranormal. The setting was the perfect backdrop to this hauntingly beautiful story. I was drawn in to the story from the first page and was constantly surprised. Just as I thought I knew what or who was behind everything something happened to throw me off. The author did a great job of giving small hints and clues throughout the story without giving away the entire mystery.

The romance was sweet and not too overdone. There was just enough to keep me interested without completely taking over the story. I also liked how it gradually built throughout the story instead of just being thrown out there. The characters weren't instantly in love instead they slowly came to know one another and became friends. I can't wait to see how their relationship progresses in the rest of the series.

Chira is an outcast and is not used to hanging around anyone other than her best friend Tasha. That is until she strikes up a a small friendship with the new boy Ben. She is a smart, loyal, and brave young woman that I enjoyed getting to know. I also liked seeing the growth in her character throughout the book. She started out as a bit of a loner, throwing up guards to keep people out. However by the end she had finally ventured out and gained friendships that she had never thought would happen.

Ben is an unusual, but very intriguing boy who has a very kind heart. He is very sweet and a bit shy, but once you get to know him he can be very charming. I enjoyed the banter between him and Chira they really knew how to make each other smile even when they were teasing each other. Ben also has a dark secret one that he doesn't like to talk about, but even so he does his best to try to protect people. He is a bit misunderstood, but it was so easy to fall in love with his adorable self.

Matt is Ben's cousin and the last to join their little group. It was a bit tense with him and Chira at first, but with his carefree attitude and easy jokes it's hard not to smile around Matt. We don't get yo see as much about Matt In this book, but I do hope to see more about him in future ones.

This is an exciting start to a promising new series and I highly recommend it to fans of mystery, suspense, and the paranormal!

Pauline just keeps proving to me why she is an amazing author. She has a broad range and versatility that allows her to write fantasy, horror, suspense, paranormal, romance and even spiritual. She can do it all! First Impression is the latest in a long line of fabulous books, and this time she’s dealing with spirits.

What made this book stand out for me, was Chira. Too often, the protagonist of a story is the “best”. Whether they have some special ability, or are smarter, more clever, faster… or even more broken… than everyone else. That makes them hard to relate to since I am nothing more than ordinary. Chira is just your everyday, average girl, being put into a difficult situation. Chira is relateable. She is dealing with bullies (in a great way, I might add) and a rocky home life, even before they visited the old schoolhouse.

Then… everything really starts to fall apart… The kids are now being picked off, one at a time, and anyone could be next! The facts just don’t add up, and Chira turns to Ben for answers. Ben obviously has something to hide, and I found myself drawn to him, just as Chira is. It was so important to me that this ordinary girl, while she doesn’t have any special powers to save the day, is still able to support the people around her and make a difference. It’s only as everything starts to collapse, that her life begins to rebuild.

I definitely want more of this series! I had goosebumps racing up and down my arms! Even through all that creepiness, Pauline manages to keep it totally clean. Minimal language, while still keeping the dialogue realistic. Mom approved! :D

I sat down knowing that this book had me at paranormal. A story that would possibly have me on the edge of my seat what I got was so much more! The level of malevolent evil and just down right scared was so powerful it left me reeling. First Impressions is not just a paranormal story however, it is a story with layers of tragedy and pain combined with friendship as well. When I first met Chira Kelly I new that she was different. She was a loner determined to stay that way except Tasha her one and only friend was just as determined to keep Chira from folding in on herself. As this story continued I found myself emotionally attached to Chira and able to connect with her on levels that even I was unaware of the ability to be reached. Emotion tucked away just like Chira hiding from the outside. Until Ben appeared, he brought out something in Chira that was exciting to read. First Impression hit a element of the paranormal that made my head spin and left me wondering what was reality and what wasn't. The question of could this evilness be stopped and if so could it be done in time to stop others from being hurt. I became so enveloped with this story that it became almost impossible to put down. I had to know more and all I can hope is that Pauline Creeden intends to make this series a long one as there is so much more than meets the eye here. MS. Creeden did an excellent job with this story it is well written and thought out not just slapped together. I truly enjoyed reading First Impression and hope to hear more of this tale.

First Impression was yet another, book I couldn’t put down. It was a quick read, I finished it in a day and totally enjoyed it. I particularly liked Chira. She wasn’t really a “typical” YA female lead. She was nerdy and very relateable to me. (May i also point out that the fandom references present in the book were golden?) I also liked the fact there wasn’t really a “love triangle.” (I think you could interpret that from Matt, Ben and Chira’s relationship but i don’t consider it one personally, since Chira wasn’t into Matt at all.) I thought this book was a great, unique idea and I can’t wait until the next book is out! It's definitively a must read book!

I got my copy of the book a month or 2 ago (I know, I know, I just got around to reading it now), and at that time it was not yet published and my copy hadn’t even been edited. So, i won’t deduct any ratings for that part of it but, i thought i should just point a few mistakes out. At the beginning of the book it says “I watched for the owl with my Hogwarts letter to appear on my 10th birthday, but it never did.” I’m just going to point out that i’m pretty sure the acceptance letter to hogwarts comes at age 11? Also, for the first half of my copy one of the character’s names was spelled like "Stacy". The other half of the book it was spelled "Stacey", with an e. Those were the only two mistakes that stick out in my mind besides minor spelling mistakes. (NOTE: I was informed by the author that these mistakes were fixed before the final copy was released.)

First Impression by Pauline Creeden is a teen/young adult book that I believe anyone would love to read. Pauline Creeden captures the atmosphere of high school to the point that you are pulled back there.

All Chira Kelly wants at school is to be left alone. She has one friend, Tasha, and she is quite happy with that. As luck would have it, she has been nominated to show the new kid, Ben Oscuro, around. There is something mysterious about him that draws her. She decides that she may have to let him into her inner circle.

While investigating the old school house, they see a ghost. Tasha is so terrified and takes off running. She does not stop until she is hit by a car. When other students that were part of the group start dying, the rumors of a curse start going around. Ben decides that he will make sure that Chira is never alone; he has spotted someone following her. There is also the mystery of missing girls from a town over. Are they connected? You never know from which direction danger will come from.

I will not give away the twist in the book that blew my mind. This book was so great that I am planning on reading it again. This story rates 5 out of 5 stars. I found some parts of the book very comical. Rivalry, snobbishness, and fear are components that the author makes the reader feel while reading it. You will feel like you could actually go to a school and see these characters in real life.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I started reading First Impressions, but I think not knowing what to expect, made the experience reading this book so much better! I have read a lot of YA Paranormal books, but this one takes the cake of CREEPY! There was one part in the book, that I should have not read alone. You could literally feel the fear, of all the characters.
First Impressions, starts out with a normal teenage girl, Chira. She isn’t the most popular, because of a certain rumor, that has been floating around the hallways(She doesn’t let the rumors bother her one bit). Her home life, is horrible(I felt so bad for her). In the beginning, Chira is picked to be a tour guide for the new student Ben. Ben, is mysterious…but you can’t help to love him. He is funny, and smart. He is a perfect match for Chira, they play off each other very well. Later on that day, Chira’s only friend Tasha, was invited to go to this haunted schoolhouse, she takes Chira with her. As the group of teenagers, split up into groups, to search around the school. Unfortunate events happen, causing the teenagers to fear for their lives.
After Chira finds out more about Ben, why he has jumped from family members, to family members, most of his life. When Ben learns that Chira is in danger, he becomes her “bodyguard”.
This book will keep you on your toes, you will laugh, you will cry! Go enjoy this book!

I loved all of the Harry Potter and Doctor Who references! The very beginning started off on a Harry Potter-like note. But after that, the story did feel like it dragged and read like any other high school drama, until the point where they investigated the old school house. As a paranormal fan, I really wanted more paranormal from it, but even at the end, it felt like most everything that happened in it (except for the ghost images) ended up having real world explanations. But, don’t get me wrong, it did suck me in at the point of Tasha’s accident. I suddenly found I couldn’t put it down and sped toward the end trying to figure out if there was anything truly paranormal about Ben, or if Chira might gain some powers, or if the ghosts really were trying to kill people. Ben was marvelously interesting and intriguing (and seemed more than a little like an older Harry Potter with his messy dark hair, striking eyes, owl companion, and mystical upbringing) and I loved Matt being in it as an example of a normal teenage boy in the exact same situation, so I adored the moments of the two of them together. I do hope we see further installments of this series and see Ben and Chira’s relationship grow and dig more into who Ben is. (And like one of the other readers, Chira’s name drove me a bit nuts trying to figure out how to pronounce correctly. I’m guessing it’s probably supposed to be pronounced as Kaira though I was wavering on calling her Keera).

This is a very fast paced book. You jump right into the action in Chapter three and by the time you get there, the main character have been pretty much introduced. I liked that there was very little confusion about who the story was about and what was happening. Chira has had a rough time being one of the poorest girls in school and having her step dad work for the school. On top of that, home life isn't exactly something a junior in high school wants. She really cannot stand her step dad so she spends as little time at home as possible. This has resulted in her being near the top of her class from all the time she spends studying in the library. To top off the smart kid stigma, so kids in school started a rumor that she was gay which unfortunately Chira hasn't been able to disprove. It's a tough life for her. It's gets tougher when her best and only friend gets hit by a car after seeing a ghost. Now she is caught up in this"curse" where the students that saw the ghost are all being killed and the new boy in school believes she might be a target as well. Ben, the new boy, coerces Chira into letting him follow her everywhere she goes in order to keep her safe. Why he does this is pretty apparent to the reader, but he does have knowledge about the entire situation that you discover at the end. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one in the series.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this novel

I found it hard to rate this book, mostly because I felt that it had potential that wasn't met. I didn't dislike it, as such, but I definitely felt that it could have been better.

For example, the 'mystery' was too easily worked out - I already knew who the kidnapper was. I also felt like the paranormal and the mystery were too simply linked, and that there wasn't enough complexity to the novel.

The novel was too short, and too easily resolved and I felt like the characters lacked enough depth. For example, I liked Chira and Ben well enough but we just didn't know enough about them to fully sympathise with them or feel anything for them.

Overall, I just felt like this novel needed a bit more to it - there wasn't enough depth of character or plot, though the writing was easy to read and it was enjoyable enough to do so.

Great beginning of new series, You get to know Chira a girl living with her mother and step dad , last is nit to nice to Chira. She is a loner besides her best friend Tasha. When she meets a new boy in school Ben, he has a dark past but is friendly and has a good hart. Chira feels drawn to him, but keeps him on a distance same time.

When Tasha asks her to come on a visit to a abandoned house what was the start of their school, she doesn't really want to, they say it is haunted, but she is going to support Tasha. They get the scare of their life and life as they know it is done. One after the other fall to freak things and she is next??? Good thing that there is Ben who can see truth, and together they go to find out what is going on.

I can not wait to read more of this author, I very much enjoyed this mystery and paranormal filled story.

This book resonated with me, I loved the characters. Chira who is always trying to keep a low profile and do the right thing, Ben who sees the world and beyond it, and Ben's cousin Matt who is a normal guy whose world falls apart and as he tries to make sense of it and create a new normal for himself he draws closer to Ben and Chira. The trouble starts when a group of students visit the old school house and see a ghost. Slowly bad things begin happening to the students, some are haunted, some are hurt and some die. Ben, Matt and Chira band together to try to keep each other safe. Not only do they figure out the common thread between all the events, but they discover how much they have in common and the bonds of true deep friendship along the way.

Loved this book! It starts with Chira trying to deal with a terrible step-dad, a rumor at her school and a head cold when she meets the mysterious Ben. A trip to a haunted school starts the dominos taking down all the kids who saw the apparition of a ghost. Who will be next? The bodies are stacking up and Chira looks to be next on the list.

Ben was awesome with this abilities and aloofness. His chemistry with Chira was wonderful to read.

The mystery of the Old Schoolhouse will keep you guessing until the end.

Great start to an exciting series. I cannot wait to read more.

This is a great Y/A Paranormal book. Chira feels like a loner with only one friend. Until Ben shows up and Chira gets stuck showing him around and she founds out she is intrigued by him. When they go to a suspected haunted house one by one of the teens that seen the ghost they lose their life in suspicious events. I will not give any spoilers away but it is not what it seems. I really love how Pauline weaves a masterful story. Can't wait for the next one.

I loved this book! My husband says I give too much information in a plot synopsis, so now that he's made me totally self conscious, I won't summarize. I'll just tell you that the story was great. It's a mystery with paranormal elements and a budding romance, as well. Pauline knows how to keep a reader interested and is gifted with weaving magic with her words so that you immerse yourself in it. Please give it a read!
I can hardly wait for the next book!!!
