Sammy Sosa
By Terri Dougherty

This book is mainly about how Sammy Sosa worked to become a baseball player and break records. When he was little, he played baseball with his friends. He used a tree branch as a baseball bat and he made a ball. He used a milk carton as a glove. He practiced his swing at batting cages. He made sure that he never struck out by showing up to all of the practices. In 1998, he got drafted to the Chicago White Sox. Then he was traded to the Chicago Cubs. He and Babe Ruth both had 61 records until Sammy Sosa beat the record with 62. Lastly, he chose to trade teams and joined the Texas Rangers.

There are three main points in this book. The first main point discusses that Sammy Sosa was born in San Pedro de Macores and tells about how he grew up. He was born in November 12, 1968 and his father died when Sammy was 7 years old. He helped to support his family by working hard to give the family enough money so that they can have a place to stay.
He had to sisters in a two bed room apartment and had to sleep in the floor.

The second main point discusses how Sammy Sosa wanted to play baseball with his friends when he was a child. When Sammy Sosa was little all he want to to do is play baseball. He did not have any bat or glove. So he use a milk carton as a glove and a branch as a bat. He always dream when he was little that he want it to become a professional baseball player.

The third main point is how Sammy Sosa practiced until he broke a record of home runs and played baseball on three major league teams. When he was in the cubs he was a power hitter all he want it to hit home runs. He was tied with Roger Maris Home run with 61. Then in July he broke the record with 62. Also he worked hard and never give up to brake a record.

I already knew a lot about baseball and Sammy Sosa. I knew that he played with a branch as a bat he made the baseball and he used milk cartons as gloves. In addition, I knew that he had broken the homerun record because I watch him on the TV. He played in the world Classic of baseball. He supported his family. This is what I already knew.

I learned many new facts about Sammy Sosa. First of all, I learned that he always wanted to play baseball, no matter what happened. Second of all, on page 24, I found out that Sammy Sosa received an award for being sports goodwill. This means he did good things in sports that help other people. Next, I learned that he was the National League Player of the Week in 1993, 1995 (twice), 1996, 1997, 1998 (three times) (26). Lastly. also thought he would never make it to the playoffs, but he made it to the playoffs with the Chicago Cubs.

I learned many interesting facts about Sammy Sosa, but there was one very interesting fact. Breaking the record is the most interesting fact about Sammy Sosa’s career. This is the most interesting because to me, breaking a record means being on top. Beating other legendary players means you can be a future Hall of Fame or you can be remembered as a person. I think that’s really cool.

The author wrote this book to explain how Sammy Sosa grew from a little kid to a famous baseball player. I think the author wrote the book for people who don’t know much about Sammy Sosa. We don’t all watch TV, but we can all read a book and then we can learn about him!

I would recommend this book to a friend that plays baseball. Specifically, I would recommend this book to my cousin. He plays baseball in the Dominican Republic and he is 18 years old. He would like this book because it would give him facts about baseball and he could learn how to play baseball better. I would recommend this book to any person who is interested in playing baseball or reading about baseball.

This book did a perfect job of teaching about baseball! I would give it five stars. This book taught me how to practice my swing, it taught me how breaking a record is important to a player, and how never giving up is something that can make you perfect!
