And worst of all, he drank a beer that tasted funny.
Now he's running for his life, trying to piece together how he became the unwitting pawn in a corportate battle over something so small it takes a high-powered microscope to see it.
Not everything is bigger in Texas, even if the conspiracies are.
So in this past year or so I have started to take my reviewing of books a lot more seriously. I reckon I’ve posted about 150 reviews in that time. I get a lot of contact from authors when I post a 5 star review thanking me for it. I get thanks for 4 star or 3 star reviews. I even have an author who has not even acknowledged 1 review despite me giving him numerous 5 star reviews.
I tried to read Sedition by Tom Abrahams during that time. It is a political thriller. I didn’t like it. For me it was too political and not having a full understanding of the American political setup I found it boring. I gave it a very short 1 star review in which (on reading it again) I thought I probably came across as rude. Tom Abrahams contacted me through Goodreads about the review. He thanked me for it even though it was a bad, 1 star review. He said he respected the review because it was my opinion. I must admit I was taken aback by this. He is the only author to contact me about a bad review and respect my opinion on it even when it wasn’t that good. For this Mr Abrahams gets my utmost respect. He also asked if he could send me a free copy of his current book Allegiance to see what I thought of it. Again, respect. He could have just forgot about me and my little review and went on about his business. I agreed to give an honest review after reading Allegiance. This is it.
Jackson Quick works for the Governor of Texas. It’s not a particularly important job he has but he enjoys it. The Governor has had him travelling to various parts of the world delivering iPods to people he does not know. He has no idea of the information on the iPods nor does he want to. Until…..last thing he remembers is going for a drink with his girlfriend…..now he’s tied up being interrogated about what he knows about the information on the iPods. This is the beginning of a journey that Jackson will never forget as he spends his time running from the people who want him dead. He has no idea who they are and who to trust. They have no idea of Jacksons past and what he is capable of!
You ever watch motorsport like Nascar, Formula 1 or MotoGP? You know at the start when the lights go out and its non-stop action from there until the race is over? In Tom Abraham’s Allegiance, the lights go out on page 1 and no one stops until the chequered flag on the last page!
This book is, for me, so far removed from his first book Sedition. It didn’t get out of first gear for me but Allegiance is a full on sprint. It opens with a sniper and his spotter taking out a target but you have no idea who asked them to do it or why. It then slips into the first person with Jackson taking over the story from there. I felt an instant connection with Jackson in this story making it very easy to read, very believable and very easy to be on his side. Characters come and go. Just when you start to settle in with a new character something may, or may not happen with them that completely changes the direction of the story. Jackson is confused for most of the book as to who is doing what and who he needs to trust. The beauty of the story is that you have no idea either, right up to the last few pages. Now I would class this obviously as a political thriller but the politics takes more of a back seat and thrills are the main driving force in the book.
So from my first Tom Abrahams review which was a couple of lines to this new one that I’m struggling to stop writing – I will summarise – this is a very fast paced thriller with numerous twists and turns leaving you guessing right up to the very last pages. It is written in such a way that you will not want to put it down but if you do, you get straight back into it when you pick it back up again. You will hold your breath at times. You may even read with one eye closed. Jackson Quick is one of the best main characters I have read this year and hope to see him pop up in future books. To summarise my summary – brilliant book – go buy it!
Tom Abrahams is a reporter and anchor on Channel 13. His experience covering local, national, and international news shows in his writing. If you like "can't put it down" political thrillers, this book and his other book, Sedition, are great reads. Allegiance is also good because it is set in Texas and there are a lot of familiar places. After reading his books, it leaves me hoping there will be future books with his heroine from Sedition & his star character from Allegiance....even better; how about a book where both characters get together to fight the forces of evil, Tom?!!
An enjoyable 2nd thriller by Tom Abrahams. The story mixing Texas politics, oil and gas, and nanotechnology kept my interest throughout the book. It was a quick read and the editing was much improved over the 1st book. I liked the lead character and hope he shows up again in another book. It was also interesting because I am familiar with the locations where the book took place. I'm not used to reading books that take place in places I know, like Houston and Austin.
Jackson Quick is an aid to the governor of Texas. He unwittingly stumbles into a political conspiracy. Everywhere he goes seeking answers folks get killed. It is hard to tell the good guys from the bad.
Abrahams first novel in the Jackson Quick Adventure series, Allegiance, introduces us to a cast of characters that are not at all as they seem. A very cleverly written mystery with multiple layers that provides surprises at every turn of the page.
If you like to read about corrupt politicians, hired assassins, loyalty and betrayal, along with a news reporter thirsty for a juicy story, then this is the book for you. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

What a great read. Love political thrillers. Had me on the edge of my seat all afternoon. I am looking forward to reading the next book.
Favorite passage: " As we pull away, I see Charlie get out of her car, tucking a handgun into her pants at the small of her back. I guess we’re officially broken up."
As the review title hints, this is not one of those stories where you'll see every twist and turn coming. The plot is complicated, the protagonist is pulled from point to point, learning, as the reader does, just what the heck is happening. And the reader will hurry, just as he does. It's well-written and flows comfortably. Worth the read.
Jackson Quick came out of the rabbit hole he fell in with a gun in his hand. He was a natural with it just like his Dad. He figured out what was going down but it cost him the life of his friend and also the girl he loved. But, he was a quick study and he walked away in one piece ready for what may come. And, he is expecting it.
Another guy with a superpower ... being a fine assassin. The plot device of a central figure advocating Texas secession is pretty funny since the winter catastrophe of "going it alone" for electricity, so they don't have to rely on the Feds. Ah, capitalism. And Texas-sized zenophobia.
Verge on the surreal, requiring a strong suspension of belief, but it's never boring. The protagonist isn't quite believable, especially as the bodies pile up, and nobody wins
What a tangled web: the two candidates for Texas governor duel for the power seat. An unwitting aide is dragged into the morass. A fast-paced thriller!

This was an okay read. I really didn't understand how Jackson Quick, who was a reporter, then on the Governor's personal staff, was such an awesome shooter AND cared so little when he killed someone. He wasn't the kind of man who dealt with that kind of world. AND why was this called a sci-fi? I didn't get that either. Jackson was just too much of an ordinary person to be such a killer.
I doubt I could go on with this series. He isn't a "hero" as far as I'm concerned. He's someone who seems to get lucky at every turn, that's all.
No real romance or sex and no real swearing either.
As for the narration: The only reason I actually got this book was because Jay Snyder was narrating it. He's simply awesome.
Just when you think you have it all figured out . . .
Jackson Quick is a little slow. When it comes to women, one in particular, poor Jackson loses again. When it comes to plots, he has it all figured out, but he's as wrong as he
Nope, sorry, you'll have to find out for yourself. Don't look to me for help. I had it all wrong. The characters are dark, dingy, political types who do and say anything to advance themselves or their causes. You know the type. You don't? You haven't been paying attention? Wow. The last several years must have had you standing on your head trying to see the whole picture. Kinda like this storyline. By the time I finished this book, I was twisted into the Dead Dog yoga pose. Or something. I'm hoping for more clarification in the next book in this series.
The characters and storyline were really impressive. I had it all figured out several times before the author brought it back on track. A different track than I was expecting, but on a track anyway. Political action adventure for sure!
Well written political action and adventure story.
The prose is tight and well thought out for the most part. The section where Quicks father was teaching him to shoot a 22 rifle was a bit humorous. Sounded as though he was shooting a Mosin-Nagant. If like most of us today you believe politics and politicians are rotten to the core you will like this story. Greed, lust for power and wealth. It drives the real ones and the fictional ones.
Tom Abrahams has written a new political thriller that kept me full of anticipation with a story-line that will consume you, and characters that will pull you into the story. This book has so many twists and turns, coupled with intense characters and circumstances, that I found it very difficult to put it down.
Jackson Quick is working for the Governor of Texas, and finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy that consumes and threatens his life. He travels to different locations to deliver an iPod to various unknown individuals. Following his most recent delivery he is kidnapped and tortured by a group headed by Sir Spencer, who desperately wants to know what the iPod contains. Believing that Quick knows nothing about its contents, he is released. Following his release Quick is hell-bent on discovering the Governor’s plan, and the significance of the information contained on the iPod.
The characters in this story are very well developed, and you get a sense that you personally know each and every one of them. Jackson Quick is a multi-dimensional character, and was developed in such a way that his growth can be seen as the story progresses.
Abrahams has a writing style that is intense, engaging, and thorough down to the very last detail. His political knowledge coupled with his understanding of the cut-throat nature of the oil industry combine to create a story that will kidnap your attention, and torture you with suspense.
I would highly recommend this book to all readers.
What a book! What a story! What a ride! This political thriller is more of Mr. Abrahams at his best. Exceptional character descriptions and detailed (and dangerous) situations abound in this first book of Jackson Quick's adventures.
The setting is the entire state of Texas and the complications, betrayals, and intrigue are "Texas-sized" as well. From the very beginning, this story grabs the reader and does not let go! The intricate and incredible fast pace will leave any reader breathless in anticipation of turning the page. A very well written story and an amazing amount of political collusion to try to unravel while running with Quick for his life.
I was (again) not disappointed with Mr. Abrahams' excellent writing style and impressive storytelling. I highly recommend this book and personally look forward to more adventures with Jackson Quick!
Someone is trying to kill Jackson and he doesn't know why. He's a courier for the Governor of Texas. Just an aide...is it the iPods he gives to people at the Governors request? A fast paced thriller with treachery galore. Deceit in abundance! An excellent read!!
I really enjoyed how this book kept me guessing until the very end who the good guys and the bad guys really were. It kept me engaged from the very first page until the very last page with action and intrigue. I can't wait to see more develop from the main character in this series.
Allegiance is the first book in the Jackson Quick political thriller written by author Tom Abrahams. It took me a bit to get into it but was definitely worth the time.
Not a lot of intensity, intrigue, mystery or deep character development. Light and somewhat entertaining if you follow or are amused with political antics.
