The author has gathered a lot of information and has insightful things to say about how humans' interactions with artificial intelligence will change as the technology develops. As a futurist, she has thought deeply about AI, and this book tries to cover just about every way it will influence the human experience. She articulates things we've all encountered, like the speeding up of time or the increasing torrent of data and information that bombards us every minute of every day. She also makes perceptive observations about how powerful a human-AI collaboration can be, allowing AI to handle what it does best (process vast amounts of data), while leaving nuanced decision-making to people.
She provides a well-balanced presentation of the competing views of AI, clearly illustrating the concerns of those who see AI as a threat with the optimism and awe of people eager to explore the technology's capabilities, whether to enhance productivity, increase wealth, or reduce people's need to do monotonous, labor-intensive work.
Orange reveals many hidden aspects of our rush to adopt supertechnologies, including the many people who work long hours for little pay sifting vast quantities of computer-generated content and weeding out objectionable images or text. We read about how AI trained on AI can lead to collapses in the models' ability to learn at all, as well as the enormous amounts of energy and water required to cool the massive server systems now required by our growing dependence on computational technology.
Unfortunately, the book is written almost entirely in corporatespeak, where people are managed, potential is capitalized upon before being optimized, and innovative channels of communication are reprioritized and leveraged to ensure effective and efficient productivity in today's hybridized work landscape.
The text is littered with words ending in "ize," often in places where the unadorned version of the word would have worked perfectly. There is also a sense that the book's editing was rushed, with the same words or phrases getting used too often in sentences close together.
Still, readers who manage to get through all the parts, chapters, and sections will come away with a lot to think about and may be better prepared for whatever comes next.

Erica Orange approached the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) from a more philosophical angle musing on the impact and future of this disruptive technology. The premise of Orange’s point of view is what she terms as ‘Templosion’ - the notion that the biggest events are happening at shorter and shorter intervals. While the book presents interesting points - this is not an expository book for those who wish to learn about the mechanics of AI. Orange touches on several different topics such as employment, education, human relations and trust, exploring the current and possible future impact, at a level that assumes a substantive understanding of AI functionality. Which for me is the central weakness of the book, I feel it could have been constructed in a manner that made the digestion of the numerous topics easier. It is a decent read if you want a holistic overview of the considerations and conversations currently trending around AI.
