˃˃˃ "Put Spenser and Travis McGee together, and you have Miami Jones..." - Amazon reviewer for the Miami Jones series.
˃˃˃ Q&A with the Why a Florida mystery series?
A lot of things came together to make the series happen. Of course I always loved Florida mystery novels, there’s a whole lineage of them. And all those crazy Florida adventures of and Mssrs Hiaasen and Dorsey and co. My family moved to the Sunshine State, and everything about the place made me want to create a bunch of fun loving characters. The kinds of people you’d love to share a beer with, in a casual place with a plate of smoked fish dip. But the kinds of folks who live by their convictions - salt of the earth you might say. There’s a lot of folks like that in Florida, along with more whack jobs per square miles than anywhere I’ve ever been.
Who is Miami Jones? Is he you?
He’s not me, let’s start there. He’s got a bucket load more bravado than me. But he’s a thinker. His baseball career didn’t define him, but it did help form him, and I wanted to explore that side of it - the fact that most college sportsmen and women don’t go pro, and those that do mostly don’t last, and somehow that gets looked on as a sad thing. Miami doesn’t believe it is. Pro sports taught Miami to fake it until you make it, but at the same time to never believe your own press. Mostly he doesn’t. He’s too cheeky by half, but don’t we all like the idea of serving up a good one liner when we don’t really have the guts to do it? He’s not one of these private investigators who shoot to kill without repercussions. He feels bad when he acts bad, but it doesn’t stop him doing it if required.
Is he a hard boiled detective?
I call him soft boiled. It’s what happens to normal people when left out in the Florida sun. He calls them as he sees them, but he’d never call his girlfriend a dame. She’d tear him a new one if he did.
There’s a sports theme in the series. Is it a men’s adventure?
Yes and no. Lots of ladies enjoy sports so that doesn’t mean anything. But the sports are infused in Miami’s thinking, rather than being pervasive in the stories. More than half of my readers on my email list are women, so it might be a men’s adventure, but it’s not just for male readers.
Speaking of women, Miami’s girlfriend knows how to handle him.
That she does. I hate those stories and movies where the love interest is nothing more than someone to serve the martinis. Danielle is Miami’s equal in every way. She’ll out think him most days, and she even has his measure in most physical endeavors. But she’s still a woman, so she doesn’t see the world in the same way as Miami and ”the boys’. And that’s a good thing.
Will we see her in her own private eye series?
No. For a start, she’s not a gumshoe, she’s a sheriff’s deputy.
A.J. Stewart has lived in so many places it feels like he has a home team in every game he sees. Which explains why his wife begins any sports telecast with "who are going for today?" A.J. and his family currently spend their time in Los Angeles and South Florida, but stay tuned, anything could happen.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a little bit of a mixed bag for me, but overall I really enjoyed it. My biggest test for how to rate a book is whether or not I'd look at more stories from the author and in this case I think I would, so I'd be inclined to recommend this book to others looking for a good little detective story.
Down to the nitty gritty. For me, the beginning dragged a little. The biggest issue I could pinpoint was that there was a lot of noir-styled narrative in my opinion it slowed the pacing down. The first half of this book was probably a 3-star book for me, okay but not a keep me up all night to finish read, but then something shifted. It wasn't that the noir narrative disappeared, it's still there in the second half but it just felt a little more settled and better balanced. I won't spoil the ending, but when key events happened and decisions were made, I was totally there and that is the best thing any book can offer.
The good: the dialogue was sharp and realistic, the conflict at the right level for a detective story, and the characters were well developed and relatable.
Miami Jones is a P.I. living in a nice beach house in South Florida. He is an ex-jock who exercises and eats well--that healthy lifestyle is inspired by his admirable girlfriend who holds a demanding job of her own, yet has time to be beautiful and supportive of Miami's every need. Miami is smarter than most everyone around him, and has no demons, bad habits, or real faults, except perhaps a poor fashion sense. His friends are loyal and exhibit hearts of gold beneath gruff exteriors. In all, two murders are solved, corruption avoided, bad guys are sorted out, and disposed of. Greed and jealousy do not pay off when Miami is on the trail.
The story starts very slow, but picks up a bit towards the end. The effect is similar to a male version of a murder cozy. The violence is mostly moderate, expect for details of one of the murders, which seemed particularly gratuitous.
Those who enjoy a nice guy's PI murder mysteries will find this meets the genre criteria.
Offside Trap is a quick-paced mystery that weaves college sports, drug use and campus politics into one gripping read. From the first page, I was drawn into A.J. Stewart's world and enjoying the witty dry humor of the lead protagonist, Miami Jones.
Miami Jones is a private investigator who was called by an old friend to investigate the star lacrosse player's overdose on an unknown drug. Fearful that this case of drug use would lead the university president to cancel all sports programs and eliminate her from a job, athletic director Kimberly Rose is intent on finding who, what and why drugs are being supplied to the kid who overdosed.
With each passing chapter, the plot twists and thickens. I found myself trying to figure out everyone's motivations. Because it's a mystery, I also found myself wanting to turn over every clue and break the case before Miami does.
This was one entertaining read -- highly recommended!
Interesting story. Most of this authors novels get “anti” about NRA and guns. He isn’t “woke” but- Forewarned is … Most of the plots are Clean, as well as interesting. An excellent narration.
One teenage death leads to another – when a star athlete overdoses under the campus bleachers, Miami Jones is called in to investigate, and proceeds to get himself in hot water too. Drugs, greed, violence — let's just say more than five of the seven deadly sins — each play a part in the web of intrigue that builds tension throughout the story. Sex is absent, sexuality ever present.
Miami has more quips and comebacks than old Bill Shakespeare does. Dialogue in this novel seldom goes over ten words per exchange, but terseness does not lead to reader boredom at any point. In fact, it is fascinating how much wit and sarcasm can be packed into one sentence or one page. Private detective Miami Jones laughs and pokes fun at himself and his own foibles, but of course, his sharpest wit is reserved for the criminal elements that he is paid to track down. Always with a ready answer, Miami truly does have "a zinger… for almost every occasion."
The other colorful characters come to life easily, effortlessly and are fully fleshed out: Kim Rose the athletic director, Ron (Miami's partner) and Danielle on one end of the scale and bad guys Montgomery, Nigel and Dr. Millet on the other. It's no surprise that there are more than a few policemen in the story, but none is described in such hilarious terms as the "fat cop." When you get to him you'll know.
I can't find any fault with any aspect of this PI/crime story. Always interesting, its fast-paced action, colorful banter and introspective moments combine well, making it a fabulous read, and an easy one at that. I look forward to reading more about Miami Jones’ world in the rest of the series.
First thing I would like to be clear with is: I won this book in a goodreads giveaway, and thank god I did, because it was amazing!!!
The most important question in this book is: What is the price of winning at all costs?
Well, in this book we have a university president with delusions of grandeur, a property developer with mob ties, and a crooked politician fast-tracking projects for cash. You know the usual in South Florida, you see any other day.
The main point of the story is this: when Miami Jones is hired by an old college friend to investigate the drug overdose of a star student-athlete, he is thrust into the dark intersection of academia, politics, and the Miami drug world.
Miami Jones does not know what he put himself into....
Because by the time he accepts this investigation, he finds himself fighting to not just solve the crime, but to save those he loves most.
I got this book free from the author. Actually I only registered on his website because I wanted to get the secret smoothie recipe, but I got the book instead.:) I have to admit I didn't have much confidence in a novel where the main character is called Miami, but it was a pleasant surprise, I really liked it. It's a classical private eye novel, reminded me of the old Raymond Chandler novels I read with my father. (With a more health-conscious detective though.)
The main character Miami Jones who used to be a competitive athlete is asked by an old friend, a much more succesful former athlete who is now the athletic director of a college, to investigate the case of a young athlete who presumably OD’ed on campus.
The president of the university wants to use this case against the athletic department because he thinks the money would be better spent on academics and research. The athletic director of course wants to prove that the incident had nothing to do with the athletic department. Everyone swears that the kid would never have taken any drugs that hurt his performance. And of course the detective starts to find dirty secrets everywhere...
I got a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Offside Trap is a story about a private investigator Miami Jones who is called in by an old friend to investigate a drug overdose incident at their university. As Miami Jones carries out his investigation, he gets caught up in a situation that jeopardizes his and his loved ones lives.
The writing was good and the characters were well developed. The story line was OK though the pacing was a little slow for me. I didn’t get hooked until I was at least half-way into the book. The other half kept me reading and wanting more because of the twists to the story.
Overall, this was a good read, and I would recommend it to anyone who’s looking forward to reading a good detective story.
Typically I prefer sci-first, fantasy or horror, however I also grew up on Agatha Christie, Marlow, and assorted other mystery, crime and detective stories. A.J. Stewart's Miami Jones stories remind me of lazy Saturday afternoons spent reading or watching Charlie Chan, Sherlock Holmes, The Thin Man and other detectives. A cross between Magnum PI, the Equalizer and just a touch of The Rockford Files. Try him out the first story sets you up, this second one improved on both the background and A.J.'s storytelling ability. You won't be disappointed, as for me I am on to the 3rd mystery.
Centered in Palm Beach County, Florida, this has turned out to be, in my opinion, a very good series. I've read some comparisons to McDonald's McGee character but I don't think the characters are close at all. More like Parker's Spenser.
If light reading with some action and no wasted verbiage is your idea of a good book, this series is probably for you.
The second book in the Miami Jones series by author A.J. Stewart finds Miami Jones answering the call of an old girlfriend. Miami Jones is a former minor-league baseball player turned private investigator. People tend to hire him when they want investigations handled in a way the local authorities won’t, either by pressing the envelope further than they should or by keeping details away from the public.
In this case, a star athlete at the college where his former friend runs the athletics program has apparently overdosed. It’s a small college that’s been looking to build a name for itself in the sports arena, and this comes as a shock to everyone there… or does it?
Miami must delve into the world of college sports and it’s competitiveness and deceitfulness, along with corruption that reaches into the Miami Police Department. Along the way he encounters mobsters and alligators. It seems like everything a novel in Florida should be, but it’s also more.
Fun read with typical Florida repartee- humorous yet profound
Dealing with typical south Florida humorous murder stereotypes, but the dish is served up consistently good, nu matter which cook is seasoning the stew. And as a connoisseur of these delectable stories, I really appreciate finding new chefs who can boil it up, make it unique enough to be theirs, but still give me what I can for. It's like a really good crabcake, Maryland- style. The meat is so awesome and there's so much of it, that no one can really mess it up, then again, the chefs makes it look so easy and maybe it really isn't. But if you're tired of eating crab, maybe this book isn't for you. And I like that the author seems to have visited the southern part of the state, which is up north, and recognizes that the state is upside-down. That's only because of air-conditioning. But I did think the author could be a but more local with the color if a server at a restaurant in Havana wasn't described by the main character as Cuban guy. I'll leave it for the author to figure out why.
Miami Jones is really something special in the P.I. world. His second adventure is even better than his debut mystery tale. The action just never stops in "Offside Trap." His professional girlfriend could go toe to toe with Susan Silverman, they're equals. I look forward to the next 11+ adventures with South Florida's answer to Boston' legendary one-game P.I. It'll be hard to top the gangsters, drugs, college shenanigans, politicos and good and bad cops that kept "Offside Trap" motoring along so nicely and excitingly. But I look forward to it being done. Write on, A.J.
I almost didn't start this series because I found the names of the main character and series (as well as the cartoonist covers) somewhat silly and offputing. But BOY am I glad I gave these books a chance! I started them based on the reviews...clever, well plotted, well-developed characters whom I've come to care about. This is the second book in the Miami Jones series and I plan on starting the third right away! Stewart has created books I look forward to reading and I want to see what happens next. These traits are the true tests of a good book for me. Give Miami Jones a try- you won't be disappointed!
Absolutely the best Miami Jones yet. Next closest thing to watching MLB, which COVID has prevent so far this year. I appreciate you filling in the gap with this awesome book, AJ! I enjoyed the change of scenery to a spring baseball location that I am more familiar with. Great story line, a mystery with a bit of sentimentality mixed in. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
This series is for fans of tough guy PIs who aren't above taking things into their own hands. He has some tough guy friends and a tough guy girlfriend. He's a decent person aside from the occasional "own hands" incident.
The setting is Florida, but the author doesn't overdo the description as some writers do. The writing is more than competent and the story moves along. I don't ask for more in escapist reading.
Miami doesn’t like to hear a young promising kid has OD and it nags him to know why. A case where people say that know nothing, or anything about drugs. Then he finds he is being lied to. A story that has a small college who wants a winning sport team, the drugs and politics that go along with this. Good plot, and Miami with his humor that slips into the conversation. Good plot to figure out who all the players were.
I like this book and the others I have read in the series. The books are entertaining, interesting, and well-written. The characters are engaging. One thing I like is that each one could be read as a stand-alone and enjoyed. Also, none of the books I have read so far end in cliff-hangers. I look forward to reading more books in the series.
I don't know if I got used to skimming over them, or the food references were less obvious in this second book of the Miami Jones Case series. In any case, I once again enjoyed the write. Mr. Stewart tells an excellent, fast-paced tale, and I love his characters! I'm an avid reader, and will read the entire Miami Jones series.
I liked #1 and I really liked #2! There are quite a few good stories coming out of Florida, Black Ops, mysteries, thrillers, and I'm quite enjoying the antics of Miami Jones! As a PI, trouble finds him, but somehow he gets the job done. I like his references to sports; lots of good wisdom there.
A.J. Stewart's books bring memories of Robert B. Patterson's Spenser and Jesse Stone stories back, and I am so happy that there are many more waiting for me to read! As a bonus, there are constant baseball metaphors and memories thrown in and that is always a pleasure for me.
Great story, great characters and the added bonus of smoothie recipes that, I'm happy to say, taste great. (I did the pineapple, strawberry, dates and kale one). Start with number one in the series.
Some people are born with a gift. Some work hard for it. Either way, A.J. Stewart has achieved what few have. He is able to weave together a fun, happy, sad, good, bad story that is entertaining from page one.
Thank you, Mr. Stewart for a few hours of great fun.
Love reading stories about my 2nd home as I'm a snowbird, but I know and have visited the places he writes about, and I can actually relate and visualize them in mind.
Well crafted plot, story and characters. But I could have done without a description of the sky every time he stepped outside and the page long description of every building and room.
Almost every sentence is worth the read. I love this author's sharp wit and quickly thought out responses. It doesn't hurt that Miami lives in Florida and the names of the places he goes sound luscious. Even better, it's a great story. His friends are a kick and I chuckle throughout. Bought through Kindle Unlimited, which we all know isn't free. Highly recommended for intelligent people.
This series is great! I really enjoyed the story & how the investigation was developed. It held my attention & kept me involved. The main characters are well developed & interesting.
I couldn’t put this book down and kept telling myself one more chapter and lights out! Normally get my eight hours sleep but kept waking up and going for more. Love the series and will continue in spite of my sleep deprivation!
This reminds me of the early Spencer novels but better. There is a lot of the same style but there’s more depth. Also the man has an excellent sense of humor.
