After Prince Alaric's death, Daria and Alex set off in search of the legendary box of the Pandors'. The box is famed to hold a secret of power--one strong enough to overcome Lord Eris and the shield of power he stole from Valdon. Daria doesn't know where the box is hidden, but she can't ignore the silent urging, beckoning her to the land of Pendel--the land her mother, Aurora Pandor, was from.
Time is running out. Lord Eris's army of shadowguard vastly outnumber Valdon's forces, and if Daria doesn't find the box in time, Valdon will need reinforcements from the other territories to survive. But those territories will not hand over their armies willingly, not without Daria's hand in marriage.
And there is another, older power rising, one that hasn't been seen in centuries--one thought lost since the days of Galahad: the dragons. Packed with action, plot twists and deceit, the stakes rise in this third installment of the Pandoran Series by Amazon bestselling author, Barbara Kloss.
Perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Falling Kingdoms, and theLunar Chronicles.
Barbara Kloss loves adventures, and finds them through reading, writing, trekking through the wilderness, and gaming—though she doesn't consider herself a gamer. She just happens to like video games. RPGs, specifically. She’s also a classically-trained pianist, and so you'll often fined music referenced in her stories.
Barbara studied biochemistry at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA, and worked for years as a clinical laboratory scientist. She was lured there by mental images of colorful bubbling liquids in glass beakers. She was deceived.
She currently lives in northern California, with her gorgeous husband, three babies, and cat, Mr. Darcy, who finds them all barely tolerable. Author of the award-winning Gaia’s Secret Series, and international bestseller, The Gods of Men.
Please hold on for a minute while I try and process everything that I just read. I need to let the feeling of reading a book that I loved - like, in an oh-my-god, swoonworthy, I want to read it again right this very minute is that weird? kind of way - wash over me for a second.
My only complaint, and it's not a real complaint, is that now I have to wait a painful amount of time (1 year? 2 years?) for the next book to come out, in order to find out how the series will end. I don't know if I can handle the waiting, you guys, I really don't.
You see, I went into this book thinking that it was the final book. Trilogies are all the rage after all, right? Once I got 90% through, I finally figured out that it wasn't, and my stomach kind of dropped. I'm trying to look at the bright side here - I mean, I get a whole additional book filled with this amazing, young-adult, fantasy romance story, right? But oh, the waiting, the waiting, the waiting...
Okay, so, now that all of my feelings have processed (somewhat), I guess I should talk about the actual book itself. In this book, we continue to follow the adventures of Daria, who is now trying to find the box of Pandor (with Alex and Vera in tow). Meanwhile, Eris' army of shadowriders is pressing in on Valdon, which paints a pretty dire picture for Stefan and his realm.
So, what specifically did I love about Breath of Dragons, then? Pretty much all of the same things that I loved about Gaia's Secret, but multiplied exponentially because in this book, the stakes were much higher. To sum it up though, we have engrossing adventures and a great overarching storyline - check; a wonderfully sweet but seemingly star-crossed romance - check; interesting world-building and fantasy elements - check; dragons - check; characters that you love and want to see succeed - check; and, last but not least, excellent writing that's descriptive and right on point with pacing - check.
Regarding the pacing, the previous book (The Keeper's Flame) had slowed things down a bit in order to portray Daria's life in the castle. But, I'm happy to say that Breath of Dragons utilizes more of the same wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am action-packed speed of the first book. There was never a dull moment, indeed, and that's saying a lot considering that this book was 120 pages longer than either of the last two installments.
I also think that Ms. Kloss made improvements to the structure of the narrative. One of my big issues with having a singular first-person narrative (especially in multi-book series) is that the world becomes too big in scope to be portrayed to the reader effectively by just one character. Fortunately, Kloss recognized this, and even though over 90% of the book is from Daria's point of view, we do get occasional peaks into the thoughts of some other characters.
If I had one honest criticism about Breath of Dragons, it'd be that Daria's abilities are becoming a bit deus ex machina, and it seems like there's almost nothing she can't do (or at least, won't be able to do eventually). Alex is also a bit too perfect, so it's not like Daria is the only one getting the super-hero treatment from Kloss. Character depth is certainly not the book's strength, let's just say. Yet, when it comes down to it, I don't even care because it didn't stop me from loving the characters or the story.
(Also, as a side note, I really missed Fleck in this book, but I'm hoping he'll have a major role in the series conclusion!)
So, there you have it. This book was amazing, and everyone who enjoys young-adult fantasy and/or fantasy romance should give this series a whirl. Anyone who has already started the series should feel confident proceeding with Breath of Dragons, because it's the best book in the series so far. And anyone who has already read Breath of Dragons and now has to wait what seems like forever for the series conclusion can join me in a fetal position on the floor.
I can honestly say this is one of my absolute favorite YA fantasy series... and I’ve read A LOT of them for comparison! This 3rd installment in the Pandoran series is the best one yet (though I’ve been quite pleased with both the others as well!). I’m a sucker for epic journeys, tragic love stories and high speed chase scenes and I’m happy to say that author Barbara Kloss fully satisfies each of these requirements in Breath of Dragons. I don’t want to give too much away, but she even throws in some archery and poisonings!!! Plus, a pretty awkward scene involving a corset. Because, well, let’s be honest here... corsets really are a little distressing.
On a more serious note, Daria and Alex’s relationship really starts to blossom as they are adventuring across Gaia. Alex is finally having to put some trust in Daria as she starts to explore her new role as princess of the kingdom. And, having Alex as her Aegis brings a whole new set of challenges to their relationship! They are so adorably in love that I’m finding myself stressing over their futures. Also, I love the dynamic that Vera adds to their travel band. Vera (assassination Barbie) is hands-down one of my favorite characters in the series. I just love this girl... except I’m somehow sure I’d also hate her. It’s complicated.
All in all, this is an AMAZING book! It’s one of those ones that I devoured in a day. And by that, I mean that I stayed up until 3 AM to finish the book and was a total sleep-deprived zombie at work the next day. An emotional, sleep-deprived zombie because, trying not to give away too much, THE ENDING IS TORTURE!! I am beyond excited for the next book!!! Don’t make us wait too long Mrs. Kloss!!!
Oh wow! I thoroughly enjoyed the previous books in this series but this one is by far my favorite. This book follows Daria and Alex as they set out on a quest to find the Pandors' box. Even though she doesn't technically know where the box is she can't help but feel like this is what she's meant to do. She knows this will be a dangerous journey but she has no idea the level of danger she has left Stephan to deal with on his own. Along her journey Daria discovers that while she searches for the fabled box owned by her mother other forces will be awakened; ones that have been sleeping for generations. Daria is growing into such an amazing leader and woman. I love her character more and more through each book. Her character progression has been amazing and believable. I really enjoy the relationship between her and Alex. Their love for one another seems entirely genuine. No sense of Instalove in this series which I am grateful for. I also really like Vera's character progression in this book. I haven't been Vera's biggest fan until now. I feel like I really understand her character and her attitude so much better now. I really like that her backstory came out so naturally. The writing flows very nicely. I just thoroughly enjoy this series. I can not wait for the 4th book to be released.
I have eagerly awaited each book in the Pandoran series since beginning GAIA’S SECRET a few years ago. I have loved each book, so beginning BREATH OF DRAGONS was like a dream come true, and I couldn’t wait to be with Daria and Alex on this adventure.
Nothing about this book disappoints.
First, let’s talk about Daria. I just LOVED seeing how far she’d come from GAIA. Daria is a very strong character, and the decisions she makes are selfless and truly made by someone who knows the importance of being a Princess and making sacrifices. She constantly puts others before her (which is a little irritating because as a Daria fan, I just want her to be happy…with Alex. LOL).
Speaking of Alex—O.M.G. Thankfully, there’s a lot of Alex in this book. A lot of Alex and Daria. Let me say that his admiration and protectiveness of Daria is so sweet, and you sort of melt when Daria refers to him as her Aegis. I think Alex will surprise a lot of readers in this book. We didn’t get a lot of him in GAIA of KEEPER’S FLAME, so seeing him in action, seeing him actively defending Daria is AWESOME.
Another character Barbara weaves throughout the story is Vera—remember, she was the woman who loved Alex. There was something about Vera I couldn’t hate, and in this book I finally understand why.
Now the story.
The focus of the book is Daria, Alex and Vera trying to reach Pendel to find the box of the Pandors, with which Daria believes they can defeat Eris. They travel several places, some of my favorites are Thieves and Gesh. Barbara does a great job of giving each place a unique culture and history. My favorite place in Gaia is probably Gesh.
There are four parts to this book, each beginning with Stefan’s (Daria’s brother) POV. This was so perfect and wonderful. I grew to really admire Stefan so much just by these insights. This also gives us a peek into what is going on in the world of Gaia. We understand that Eris is sending the shadow guard to attack, and Valdon needs aid. Orindor will send aid, but only if Daria agrees to marry Danton….now if you are a fan of Alex, you will hate this and really, it’s just playing dirty. This also doesn’t go away at the end of the book, so readers are left with the fear that Alex and Daria might be over forever. *sad face*
As the story progresses, Daria will come face to face with the murderer of her father—her uncle, Eris. I found it so hard to be in Daria’s perspective and have to face Eris. It also made me sad for her because as the books continue, it’s like she will never have her way (remember what I said in the beginning about wanting Daria to be happy? yeah.). I very much missed Daria’s father in this book. I wanted her to have the comfort of him, just as Daria wanted his comfort (you know an author writes well when you wish for something like this).
This book is filled with treachery, alliances, and dragons (JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THE DRAGONS). There’s also a lot of mystery which will have you turning pages quickly. Barbara just keeps getting better and better! I cannot wait for the fourth book. I know it will be just as amazing!
I’ve proudly called myself a fan of Barbara Kloss since I read the first of her Pandoran series a couple years ago, but my love for her work—and her smart, risk-taking protagonist Daria in particular—has reached a new level with her recent third installment Breath of Dragons. I hesitated jumping back into the rich fantasy world of Gaia, as some time has passed since I read the first two volumes, but Kloss hooked me within the first chapter. The action takes off swiftly, beginning where The Keeper’s Flame ended, and does not let up until the final page.
Breath of Dragons finds the Princess Daria on a desperate eleventh-hour mission to save her kingdom from her evil uncle and, perhaps as importantly, to save her heart from the seemingly unavoidable fate of an arranged political marriage. Daria is the rare fantasy heroine that transcends the stereotype by being both feminine and strong. This novel lacks nothing in the romance department, yet Daria is not defined by her ongoing relationship with Alex any more than she is her title. She is simply herself: flawed, witty, self-conscious, and poised to fight for the underdog. She navigates the magical, medieval landscape with her modern sensibilities, the results of which are sometimes comical, often unpredictable, and always exciting.
A notable strength of this volume is the return to the journey format of storytelling, which showcases Kloss’s ability to describe the changing landscapes with details so rich they drip off the page. Much like the first book Gaia’s Secret, Breath of Dragons features some truly beautiful imagery. Kloss paints bustling underground cities, lush tropical jungles, claustrophobic catacombs, and battle-emblazoned fortresses with the same care and attention to detail, creating the perfect backgrounds for her narrative.
I highly recommend this novel, as well as the entire Pandoran series, to regular fantasy readers, and I especially encourage young adult readers to give it a try as an introduction to the genre. Daria’s contemporary perspective makes her the perfect guide to high fantasy (I look forward to sharing these stories with my own daughters in a few years!). Furthermore, I offer this series as undeniable proof of the potential of independent novels to capture hearts and imaginations as fully as their traditionally published counterparts. My sole warning is that the ending will leave you aching for the final volume!
I feel pretty lucky that I got to read an early version of this. After everything that happened in book 2, waiting for this was TORTURE! And it didn't disappoint.
This is the book where we get to see Daria become the strong, brave, wonderful heroine we've been rooting for ever since she set foot in Gaia. Sure, she still can't really do magic, but does that stop her from, well, anything? It creates a very fulfilling struggle. She's clever and good at improvising, and I love watching her wriggle herself, Alex, and Vera out of tight spots. And Alex… *swoons* Okay so he's always been sexy, but the tension in this book between them is perfect. I mean, they're traveling cross country together, facing countless dangers… It's a good thing Vera's there, or I'm pretty sure that whole quest thing never would've reached completion :-) And honestly, I really enjoyed getting to know Vera more, watching her frienemyship (yes, that's a word now, deal with it) with Daria blossom. A lot of what's going on around the characters is doom and gloom, so having some normal teenage drama added a lot of levity, and humor at times.
I don't want to give anything away, but there is SO MUCH about this book that is so cool and unexpected, new powers for Daria, new understandings of the world and its rich history. It reminds me of Juliet Marillier's Shadowfell series in some ways - unraveling discovery of powers, awesome world building, perfectly flawed characters, strained and uncertain friendships (and romances).
I guess, all I would say is that you want to read this. If you haven't read the first two, go back and do that first, but then READ THIS! And I can't wait for book 4!!!
Oh my gosh, I just can't get enough of this series. Every time I feel like I can finally catch my breath and think about what's happening, something crazier happens.
This book goes back to the quest feel that the first one had and that has some good and not so good aspect about it. Daria, Alex, and Vera are looking for something that could turn the tide of the war that is brewing in Gaia. There's an army massing on the border and marching towards Valdon. Prince Stefan remains in the castle, trying to rule in the wake of tragedy and in spite of a king that is too far gone in his own grief.
This book is rich in betrayals. Friends become enemies. Enemies become friends. And an ultimatum from someone who may fit in either of those categories could decide Daria's fate.
I can't say enough good things about Daria. She displays just the mix of naivete, strength, and determination to make her believable. There's no shortage of heartfelt speeches that give you a glimpse of the queen she could be. I'm still drooling over Alex but Daria is the real star of the show.
There were times when I skimmed large amounts of description that's indicative of the fantasy genre. But, everything else was so amazing that I didn't feel like that was enough to knock off a star. I've already started book four and am chomping at the bit to see what happens.
Without giving too much away, this novel was by far my favorite in the series. I kept thinking I had an idea of where everything was going -- and then BAM! Plot twist, after twist, after twist. I found myself smiling many times when something unexpected and clever would occur! The relationship between Alex and Daria feels real and reaches a satisfying point -- but the end of the book leaves you begging for more.
The plot thickens in Gaia, as danger increases and you discover more about how the magic works for good or evil, with the odds looking hopelessly grim. Legends are revealed that give more of a context as to why the world will experience war, and Daria's magical powers begin to surface. In this sequel, Daria surprises not only herself, but everyone around her. Her integrity and ability to fight on despite all of her losses make her an even stronger, more mature female lead. With many mysteries still to be solved, the journey winds itself through some fantastical scenery, action-packed attacks, and touching encounters. There is much more action in this book -- something I definitely loved. You really get to see Alex act as a loyal Aegis and struggle with how that defines their relationship. So much to look forward to, this next book will be a doozy for sure!
I loved this book. There are so many layers woven throughout the story, and so much character growth. I especially love seeing Daria's character growth--looking back at who she is and how she acts in the first book, then the second, and now, her journey is strong and she develops so much, as she should. Her relationship with Alex always keeps me on my toes, but my favorite part of this book deals with a relationship that I've always had a soft spot for--and one that I can't really discuss without spoiling people, so you'll just have to get the book and read it yourself. But the mix of fast-paced plot, believable characters, and Barbara's beautiful way of pulling you into her world is well worth the read!
I struggled with this one sadly after loving the first two so much
I had such a hard time reading this one, which is so sad because I couldn't put down the first two. I think that's the only reason I can't bring myself to rate this with 3 stars. I'm not sure if it was the stiffness in Alex's and Daria's relationship, the over abundance of descriptions, the cliche arranged marriage deal, or that Daria seemed childish in this one. I found myself forcing myself to get through this one... A lot of the scenes were very creative and memorable too, so I'm really disappointed about it. If I can bring myself to read the next one, it might be better since it seems Alex will start fighting to be with Daria.
Loved loved loved this third installment in the series! Just when I thought I knew what was going on, the author threw me for a loop right at the end. Now I must wait on pins and needles for book 4! Wonderfully descriptive writing once again from the author allowing the reader to jump into Daria's world.
My house is in shambles but I finished. This book is so well done-an amazing story of what is really love, forgiveness and loyalty. Info she'd it breathless!!
Daria is fleeing from the castle with the help of Alex and Vera in search of Pandor’s box, which contains the secret to defeating Evil Eris, who now holds the shield of Gaia. Lord Danton is still in possession of the stone of Gaia and is trying to force Stefan to marry Daria to him or else he won’t protect Valdon from the approaching storm guard soldiers being sent by Evil Eris. The story unfolds from there and includes a lot of traveling around trying to find things and people.
Why I liked this: 1.) Daria is still a good character and she has a lot of growth in this book. It seems like she is finally starting to mature and is accepting that she is going to have to make hard choices that may not always have ideal consequences. She is also learning about anger and forgiveness and wow, this quote really got me 😢:
“I can't always know what makes a person choose to act this way or that. I can't always see the road they walk or understand what burdens they carry, but it doesn't matter that I understand. What matters is what I choose to do about it, and I won't make the same mistake again. I won't waste any more time or energy or emotion being angry about things I can't control. I won't let my compassion wither away because I can't let go of bitterness.”
2.) ALEX- This boi is just the BEST:
"That stone is a piece of my heart—it carries a piece of my soul, and it is a piece I give to you freely. It is a piece I want you to have, always, no matter what happens. But I won't take this from you." He squeezed my hand for emphasis. "Not when your fate is still so undecided. I will not dishonor you by being your lover."
I MEAN?!? A TRUE GENTLEMAN 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Even though it means no spice scenes between them 🥲🥲🥲
Why this book didn’t slap nearly as hard: 1.) Too long. Overly descriptive of places Daria is traveling around. Unnecessary dialogue. 2.) The plot progression felt very slow to me. Although things were happening it just did not grab my attention as much. 3.) Daria is becoming a bit super speshal and it’s a little irritating at times. She just suddenly *knows things* and it’s explained away by her reading a book about it off screen. I hate this because it takes away the dramatic impact of the information if the MC is already aware of the info. I wanna learn it WITH the character.
Overall, this is still a good book! I’m glad that Thad finally got his SHIT together and I hope to see more of him in the last book because his banter is great as always. The last book appears to be over 700 pages so I think I’m gonna take a break and come back to this series later since I struggle with books that big 🥴
While there were a few aspects of this book that really annoyed me, overall I enjoyed the progress of the story. The aspect that annoyed me most is that the main characters are in CONSTANTLY thrown from one life-or-death situation to the next. In a way that they barley even get to sleep, eat, or have something to drink let alone have the strength to be attacked with such ferocity that someone is always depleting their energy, or almost dying every other day at most. I'm sorry, I don't care how awesome you are, if you don't even have time to get a drink of water, you're going to die. Daria can't go a book without almost dying at least twice, which is also getting fairly old. Okay, stepping down from that soap box. With that said, I think it's still a very enjoyable story and worth reading. The boxset is great value!
After giving the first two books each a four star rating I am uncertain how I ended up here. Maybe I'll come back and try to read this book but for the foreseeable future I don't see that happening.
Something about this book was just exhausting. I don't know if I'm hitting a reading slump and that might be the cause or if it is the book itself. The never ending uncertainty of Daria and Alex, Daria comparing herself to Vera at every point and people still underestimating her. I just feel like I've read the same core points two books over now and with the third book starting the same way I just need to take a break.
Well, the story is awesome. Maybe my review would make more sense after I process what just happened. Dad is, what are you doing??? Alex don't just stand there. Ok those statements apply to several times throughout this series, but never as much as I was screaming them in my head as I finished this one. So glad I can move right on to the next one.
There's a bit of everything in this book, love, danger, excitement and betrayal. She has come a long way from the girl she used to be. She thought she lived a boring life, but this couldn't be further from the truth if it tried.
Breath of Dragons by Babara Kloss was written to evoke a sense of adventure in all readers – I am certain. Starting with Alex practising with daggers to Vera joining on the quest for pandors in a faraway land called Pendel. It really started to get intriguing when a very familiar black feather appears. “Shadowguard”
What is a Shadowguard? After this scene, it’s nothing but a roller coaster where pain is being felt, shards are seen to then disappear. Then a poisoned arrow slows the events for Alex and Vera. Sometimes, as I was reading, I wished I could be there smelling that fresh air. Use of magical powers and coming to terms that; “the world moves as it has always done – without you – and it doesn't care if you live or die.” While every character that was introduced was awesome; I still liked Vera the most.
Then I asked myself a few questions. Will she marry a man she did not love in order to save lives? Who was that little boy from the streets? What kind of powers did the dragon have? Of course, Barbara Kloss answers them with a style I have never seen before.
This story is a page turner. Full of adventure, mystery and fantasy any YA will want to read. I do recommend for yourself or as a gift to someone you know.
Another fantastic book in the series! I thoroughly enjoyed getting out of Valdon and delving into the other territories that comprise Gaia. The descriptions are very vivid. I usually rely heavily on detailed descriptions because I don't have the best imagination. Thieves, Gesh, Pendel, Karth, the battle, and even the exchanges between characters . . . all of it was easy for me to visualize and feel. The characters have grown immensely since the first book, both individually and in their relationships with one another. Daria (thankfully) isn't the same irrational, selfish teenager as when she first entered Gaia. This book laid to rest many of my suspicions (I knew I liked you, Thad!) but still left many loose ends for the final book to tie up. And if for no other reason, it's worth a read solely for the Alex and Daria romance. ;)
So much happened in Breath of Dragons that I'm not sure I can put it all into words, so I'll just say ... WOW! Holy S***Balls!
When this series started, Daria was the sheltered girl, the awkward, indecisive girl who had to cope with being thrust into a situation she could never have imagined - namely, being the granddaughter of the king of an otherworldly realm that is suffused with magic and where dragons exist. But over the first three books, she has grown into a confident, powerful warrior, and it seemed like every chapter brought with it a new revelation about exactly who Daria is. She is the consummate YA heroine.
I need to take a few breaths before I tackle Heir of Pendel, which I will be devouring with gusto very soon. This whole series, full of action, suspense, magic and political intrigue, is everything that a lover of fantasy could want.
I loved reading these books. It's a little bit Harry Potter and a little bit Hobbit, along with Game of Thrones (because yes there are dragons!). I didn't realize however that there would be another book after this one. I wanted to find out how it ends only to find that it actually keeps going. Which is a good thing, but I don't think the last book is out yet which means I'll have to wait. Like with a lot of books I get into I find I race to read them to find out what happens and then am sad when I realize it really is over. So can't wait to read the next one!
