love it. this author never disappoints me, I hope you will enjoy the series, as I have. I am not going to give anything away , want you curious enough to read this book , to find out why I love this book
An utterly engrossing novel. I couldn't put it down. The stakes are high, the emotion is grand, and the sensual scenes are fantastic. I'm very new to medieval, but this was absolutely wonderful to me.
I dropped into this third book into Michelle Willingham's The Legendary Warriors series, which also overlaps with another series she wrote in medieval Ireland and now I want to read all of her books.
We open in 1208 in Constantinople, in the immediate aftermath of the Fourth Crusade with Brian of Penrith as he's sold into slavery. He doesn't understand what's happening, but a young English woman named Velaria who is enslaved in the household tells him to run. He tries but is caught and gets put into the arena as a gladiator. Over the next year both he and Velaria are forced to fight to the death every three days. They rely on each other for comfort and the strength to stay alive as they look for a way back to England, but even if they do escape, Velaria is the granddaughter of an earl, the daughter of a knight while Brian is a serf. There's no way they could ever be together with a class difference that wide.
I really enjoyed this book. It takes place over the course of more than a year, which felt like a realistic timeline for two people who have been through the physical and emotional trauma Brian and Velaria endured. Michelle Willingham does not shy away from the impact their time in captivity had on them. She explores the survivor's guilt, nightmares and fear both Brian and Velaria feel at different points in the novel, but also shows how their shared experience lays the groundwork for their relationship.
I love medieval romances partly because of the way an author can explore the politics and social issues of the day. This novel deals with class in an overt way, specifically the system of feudalism. Brian was raised as a serf, tied to the land with no ability to elevate his position beyond glory in battle. He knows he has no economic prospects and would have to rely on his skill with a sword to provide for a wife. As the daughter of a knight and the granddaughter of an earl, Velaria is part of the gentry. She is an attractive prospect for any knight or lord looking for a wife and her parents expect that she will marry within her class. It is this class difference that keeps Brian from speaking to Velaria about his feelings, that causes him to part ways with her.
Her Warrior's Redemption was a great historical romance. I'll definitely be reading more of Michelle Willingham in the future!
I’ve fell headfirst repeatedly into just about every one of her incredible books; into other worlds, romances, and exciting journeys!!
Michelle Willingham AGAIN drew me into another world of life and death intrigue, complicated connections, and the feeling of being totally alive through her characters in a kaleidoscope of emotions!!
“Her Warrior’s Redemption” is book 3 in the Legendary Warriors series, and I was as involved in this book as I have been from the first book that I’ve ever read by her.
Book 3 Brian’s story was my favorite of the series. Especially appreciate historical references and the feel of the environment. While there was repetitive sentence structure that distracted me at first, I stayed interested in the characters. The wrap up with all of the previous characters was fun to see.
