Needs work

Very hard to read. There is no natural flow; each paragraph seems to be a separate thought. There is no flow to the dialogue, and the story is full of “telling “ versus “showing .” Example:

“Pam wonders I do for work and asks ‘What do you do?’

I take a gulp of beer and say, ‘I’m an actuary.’

Cheering noise in the background made it difficult for her to hear what I said.

Pam doesn’t hear me properly and guessed be asking, ‘An aviator?’”

Something like this might flow better, “showing” instead of “telling.”:

“What do you do?” Pam asked.

Setting the beer mug back on the coaster, I look into her eyes. “I’m an actuary.”

Just as I speak, the crowd erupts when the local football team scores on the big screen on the wall.

Pam scowls toward the fans at the bar, then looks back toward me, turning her ear closer in my direction. “Did you say you’re an aviator?”

As someone who’s lost a partner, Ethan’s story hit me hard. The portrayal of grief wasn’t romanticized, it was raw, confusing, and painful. Finally a book where a woman fighter pilot isn’t just a gimmick. Pam is brilliant, focused, and unapologetically career driven. I saw myself in her especially the loneliness that sometimes comes with ambition. Her vulnerability didn’t undermine her strength, it gave it dimension. I wish I'd read this when I first enrolled.
