State of Decay #1-4

State of Decay: Omnibus

Rate this book
Despite what you’ve been told, the Apocalypse doesn’t begin with fire raining down from the heavens, nor does it begin with the human race falling down on their faces in supplication before a triumphant god. No, the sounds of the Apocalypse are much more terrifying than that, and I should know … I’ve heard them, and hearing the world tumble into chaos around me is not something I’ll ever forget.
My name is Melody Carter.
A Boeing 767 fell from the sky and wiped out most of my neighborhood.
But, that's the least of my worries.
My list of "Things I'm Most Worried About" shifted dramatically when my dad told me that charred corpses tried to make a meal out of their rescuers ... I'm thinking yours would too.
This is my story.
It's not for the faint of heart.

*** This is the OMNIBUS edition of the zombie apocalypse novella series, State of Decay, and contains all FOUR parts in the serial.***
****** Warning: This book is for mature/NA/Adult Readers. This novella contains: tons of violence, lots of action, gobs of gore, and oodles of bad language. Enter at your own risk. ******

Four little books, all put into one. Four little books, all rushed and empty. Four little books that could have been great. Four little books that failed to meet my expectations. And four little books that failed, period.

**Spoiler Alert**

From previous reviews, it looks like I'm in the minority. I was not a fan of this book, sadly. First of all, I'm not a grammar nazi, but the grammar and missing words was a bit distracting. I had high hopes at first for the plot. It started out great. "The first day" section was intriguing.

"72 hours after" was pretty good at first, but then she did crazy stuff like waste ammo shooting zombies from a rooftop and jump up and down on a roof door and was surprised when she fell through and got a piece of wood stuck in her leg. But at this point, I still had some hope.

Then comes the next section.. "2 years later." I would think quite a bit has happened while Mel has been in a zombie infested world. Maybe she met up with other survivors. Maybe they gave her information on what the world is like now. Considering she's only gone about 10 miles from the house she shared with her Dad, the other side of the country could be safer. Maybe she used the car she found in the last section to go to other cities to see what it was like there.

No. None of the above.

She has apparently been sitting in the woods where she first set up camp. All alone. Making runs back to town for supplies every now and then. For two years. I mean, I can totally have respect for the fact that she lost her Dad, she needed to mourn, she didn't want to leave the place she shared with him. But come on. Two years, and you haven't tried to find out anything about what's happened?

I gave this 3 stars only because I think the plot was great. Otherwise, it would have gotten 2. I love dystopian/apocolyptic literature, and I enjoyed the idea of being a part of the mess from the beginning rather than being introduced decades later. I also thought the book was set up well in the beginning. It was different from other dystopian novels and I liked that. I just hate that didn't follow through to the rest of the book.

I NEED a Jude of my own!! Melody is so well written. I love a strong, female, who can do it on her own, and versus zombies, even better. This one has it all, romance, gore, fighting, drama, a wonderful mix. Ms. Martinez makes you fall in love with her characters and really care about what happens to them. I was on the edge of my seat and stayed up until 4 am to finish reading. Once I started I read it all the way through. I am looking forward to more by this author. This is my new favorite and highly recommended for Rhiannon Frater fans.

My new fave thing is Zombie books at the moment. I had to explain last night to my hubby that the zombie romance genre, is not romance with zombies, but romance in the time of zombies.....I still don't think he was convinced. This book was released as 4 parts but when I discovered it, all 4 parts were out and I read it together as one book. Thank gosh! because I would have been chomping at the bit, zombie style if I had to read this one part at a time. Talk about suspense! While this book may be in the zombie romance category (or that is where I found it on Goodreads), it is more about kicking zombie butt and survival, with a little bit of romance to keep me happy. I really, really enjoyed this read, and while I normally like a good old romance, I have to admit I am a sucker for an apocalypse book and movie. I love watching and reading what humanity dies when it is pushed to the brink, human nature fascinates me!

This book follows Melody who is a kick arse woman who survives on her own in the initial years of the apocalypse with just herself, and the skills taught to her by her father, who was is a Major in the Army. Melody's father sacrifices himself to ensure her survival, and Melody with the skills that her father has taught her over the years, and the reminder of the promise she made to her father to survive in her mind does just that. She survives. After living on her own in the woods for 2 years, she craves some type of human interaction so ends up at her fathers old military base where she stumbles (literally) on a combination of military people and civilians surviving under the base in secret bunkers. After being on her own for 2 years, she is needless to say a bit wary around strangers, and there is this hilarious scene when she kicks Jude's arse while she is butt naked.

Jude.....ahhhhhh. Jude is military, he is hot and alpha and oh so sweet. But what I love about him the most is that he does not belittle Melody's skills, he doesn't force her to sit out on dangerous missions because she is a woman. He knows and accepts that she is more than capable of looking after herself, and is a brilliant fighter. He lets her shine. I love the little moments that they have together, and how quickly they realise that they are meant to be, and they skip all the crap and just become a team. They realise that life is short and fragile and not a given, so why not be with the one you love while you can.

Together Melody and Jude make an awesome team, but I loved the other secondary characters in this book, Ghost, and Tex just make this book so enjoyable. Don't get me wrong, it is not your typical romance as I mentioned before, it is full of gore and guts and death, but I like that people are still fighting for something, I like that through all the death and heartbreak there is still something that makes life worth living, and this is the theme I loved the best in this book. That people are not only fighting for survival, they are fighting to live.

This really is a great book. I loved it from start to finish, it kept me up at night, kept me engaged and I did not want it to end!!!

I love Peggy Martinez!! Her writing always keeps me on the edge of my seat and SOD Omnibus is no exception. Zombies, a kick ass female leading character and more zombies! Love this book! I also love the fact that all four parts are in one book. I could read all the way through.

Melody Carter is just a normal girl who lives with her father, until the day a plane crashes in her neighborhood and the dead began to feast on the living. Melody is such a strong young woman. Her father trained her how to use weapons, so she is more than capable of holding her own. She really kicked zombie butt throughout the entire book.

After being on her own in the woods for two years, she is ready to look for survivors on the military base. One man in this group stands out, Jude. A bit cocky, very good with a weapon and maybe a little sexy. Could she open herself up and allow herself to form attachments during a zombie appocalypse?

I love Jude, but I have to be honest my heart belongs to Tex. From the moment she met him, I knew I only had room in my heart for him. I am dying to know what happened to him and if he finds his way back to the group?

Brilliant characters, tons of action, gore, gooey zombies, love and loss and even a bit of humor. I can not say enough great things about this series. I will leave you with a quote that just cracked me up.

"I was pulling out my boxes of ammo when I realized how badly I had to go to the bathroom. Even during a zombie outbreak...when you had to go, you had to go."

This was a well thought out story line about survival, love and chaos. I really loved the characters and how identifiable they were. You could feel their emotions about the destruction around them. I was engrossed in the story about a parasite that started the zombie plague. I totally enjoyed the story and I just couldn't help but read it all in one sitting.

I liked this story but the spelling and grammatical errors were plentiful. It makes me wonder if these authors who publish stories like this have ever read their own work or asked someone else to read it. Even once.
So I took one star away. But it is a good story.

I will read a favorite genre until I begin to tire of it and then I will on to something different. It had been a while since I read any horror and I had never read anything Zombie so I thought I’d try dystopian /apocalyptic. I thought it would be too far fetch. I mean..Who could believe the majority of human population eating each other for dinner?
Well, I was pleasantly surprised reading State of Decay. It was not anything like I feared it would be. It kept me on edge and eager to turn the page. I couldn’t wait to get to the end, which I loved too. It certainly leaves me eager to read more and I will be reading the entire series.
The edition could use a good editing. There are many words missing and duplicate sentences. I think I marked some of them in Shelfari so the author is aware. Other than some errors, the storyline and writing is great. The author is very descriptive and well versed.
Melody is lovable. A young girl facing the world all alone while it is falling apart and crawling with sick people who cant wait to have her for dessert. A situation like this would certainly make her grow up fast!
In ending I ‘d like to say this is a great book and I have marked the author down so I can easily find her and read more of her imaginative talent.

Asinine young adult crap.

No character building other than the main character Melody. Everybody *loves* here except her best friend.

Her lover gets shot through the chest (unluckily missing his heart), and travels for 24 hours with little medical care and is up and about leading missions 3 weeks later.

Oh, the author should get a friend to read the book and pick up all the spelling and grammatical errors that were littered throughout the book.

Why did I bother reading this?

I won this book in a contest, but that does not affect my review in any way. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel! There were a few spelling/grammar errors, as noted by other reviewers, but nothing that made me want to stop reading.

My favorite thing about the novel was right in the beginning. What does the apocalypse sound like? That hooked me right away. Sound is such a natural experience that a lot of authors forget to include that in their story. It's hard to describe how something sounds, and how those sounds can make you feel. A Boeing 747 falling out of the sky is one hell of a sound. Imagine it. Utterly terrifying. Then we have the screams, the cries, the moans of the undead, the sound of thousands of undead feet shuffling in the street... Hook, line, sinker. I'm in.

I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a fun z'poc read with a bit of everything - some humor, lots of blood and guts, and a bit of romance just to round things out.

Military Style Female Lead

Loved this invention of the apocalypse, where a girl who has been trained by her father is able to care for herself, for 2 years alone in zombie infested woods! Add some romance, a reunion, some hope and even a host of hot dudes...life is good!
