This wonderful holiday book tells the story of Silver Spurs, the tiniest of elves, who helps Santa solve his dilemma of entering narrow chimneys.
This read aloud childrens' book is beautifully illustrated with full color drawings throughout. Robert (Bob) was a 53-year-old roofing contractor when he wrote this story, in 1973, in response to his children's questions about how Santa could get through their chimney. The Associated Press carried the story on its national wires at Christmas time that year. Due to the great response, and many letters, Robert decided to publish it in book form.
The book is dedicated to 9-year-old Peter Westby, Robert's neighbor. Peter was facing the amputation of his leg, due to bone cancer, and Robert thought that dedicating this story to him might bring him a bit of cheer.
Very cute book that Robert wrote for his own children, in response to questions like this, "How does Santa Claus get into homes that have no fireplaces with large chimneys?!"
One of the books in my daughter's Christmas collection.
My parents read this to us every year when we were little. With my own children we created our own traditions and somehow Silver Spurs was mentioned but rarely read. So, as we travel during the holidays, Silver Spurs makes an appearance and gets a listen while traveling to wherever. Such a cute way to explain the changes of time. And what a wonderful elf to help Santa navigate the ever changing challenges of the evolving world.
Every year at Christmas I read this book to my son and he loves it. The copy was given to me when I was 5 years old and every time we crack the book open the illustrations flood my mind with memories of reading this book as a child. Hopefully, my son will be able to keep this copy, read it to his own kids, and have those same wonderful memories.
This is a wonderful book about an Elf that wants to work and help but nobody thinks they can do much because they are so small. But in the end he finds the perfect job to help with Christmas.
We had this book when I was a child. I loved the pictures. I read it to my son this year. Way before Elf on the Shelf, we had Silver Spurs in our tree!
