In Her Red Legion picks up the story of Reza Gard and Eustus Camden after their graduation from Marine training at the end of chapter ten of In Her Confederation, when they’re assigned to the infamous Red Legion, the dumping ground for the Confederation Marine Corps’ misfits and criminals.
But sorting out friend from foe among their new companions is the least of their worries as they’re thrown into combat against not only the warriors of the Kreelan Empire, but terrifying forces of nature that nearly cost them their lives.
As Reza fights for both honor and survival, he is confronted with the bitter consequences of being of two worlds and having to choose only one.
Born in 1963, Michael Hicks grew up in the age of the Apollo program and spent his youth glued to the television watching the original Star Trek series and other science fiction movies, which continues to be a source of entertainment and inspiration. Having spent the majority of his life as a voracious reader, he has been heavily influenced by writers ranging from Robert Heinlein to David Weber, and many in between. Having finally retired from government service, Michael and his lovely wife, along with their Siberan cat, Nina, are enjoying life as expats in France.
In his own words, 'my muse was gone for years, but now she's back' and I am so darned glad she decided to grace him with her presence again because this book was Needed! Oh how I missed Reza, and the rest of that crazy crew. I have loved the In Her Name series for a long time, have every book, have read several of them more than once, and loved them all. While he gets into some detail when discussing military actions, it's not so much that those of us far removed can't understand. The feats that the Kreela can achieve are magical and wondrous and hold me in fascination. I know this book is in the middle of the series timeline, and I have read the 'end', this still was a needed story. And that ending? Well done Hicks, well done!!
The first thing to know is: don't read this unless you've read at least the Redemption trilogy and the Last War trilogy by the same author. Chronologically, he wrote the Redemption trilogy first and the Last War trilogy serves as a prequel. But you can really read them in either order. This particular story slots between #2 and #3 of the Redemption trilogy in the timeline of the world he's built.
Overall, it was as engaging as the earlier books though I, personally, prefer the stories set mostly among the Kreelans. (The other trilogy is a pre-prequel and deals strictly with the early Kreelan society/culture.) There are also a lot of battle scenes -- hand to hand fighting and such. I found my self skimming those to get to the character part of the story -- which was relatively thin, though there was definitely some development and growth over the course of the book.
This one is set during Reza Gard's first Marine assignment. He's in a division generally made up of the least of the Corps ... kind of a "Black Sheep" squadron, but much grittier. On account of his Kreelan training, he definitely has the skills, but has to earn respect and trust since the Kreelans are the near invincible enemy they're all meant to be fighting. Basically, as far as Reza is concerned, this book is all about him figuring out which world he really belongs in.
Michael Hicks signed off on his "In Her Name" series, about a female dominated civilization of warriors who stumbled upon humanity, some years ago. I thought he was done, and I was OK with that. The series ended with Reza Gard, the human raised amongst the Kreelan Empire, banished for disagreeing with his empress. He joined the galactic marines, a fighting force his empress considers an enemy. I must admit that over the years, I wondered about what Hicks was up to. Did he ditch the laptop? Was he still writing? I checked and "Red Legion" showed up. I bought it immediately but didn't start the novel right away. Hicks has a talent for writing fight scenes that really roil the blood. Damn. I'm getting worked up just thinking about some of my favorite. Anyway, I finally cracked the Kindle version. Then I couldn't stop. I read at every opportunity. I don't recall. Maybe it took me a day. I even read while I cooked dinner that night. Reza is again in a world he never knew (Jack Kirby Kamandi reference there.) And he has not lost a bit of his intensity.
Another stunning addition to the In Her Name Series
I’ve waited a long time for this novel to be published. I’ve read and reread the entire In Her Name series so many time I can almost recite them out loud and have relived them in my mind. As I said after reading the series the first time, Michael belongs in the same realm as Herbert, Asimov, Clark, Le Guin, and Heinlein. I only wish that Amazon/MGM or Netflix would pick up and produce this entire series for others so that they can glimpse the unlimited possibilities that exist in our universe. Including a race of beings with a 500,000 yeas history.
Of the thousands of stories I have read in 60+ years, only a few authors, and of them, only few of their epic series have stood out to me. These called me back to re-read, proving that they captured me with their skills and imagination. Michael Hicks has done this for me. It has been a LONG wait for this book and it certainly foretells of ,at least, one more. I hope several more! I recognize that this story line is complicated and that can take time to sort out, but I hope he has already started as I WILL BE BUYING IT,
I had started reading this when it was being written on wattpad in several years ago.
When he stopped writing I was really sad, as Reza's story is fantastic in what it was. This book gives that look into who he became in that time between the main trilogy.
Read this. The end alone just made it worth it.
Thank you Michael Hicks! Thank you for returning to the story of In Her Name.
I was delighted when I discovered volume 10 in the series after a gap measured in years since volume 9. Suffice to say I read it in one go and enjoyed every word. Of all the sci fi series I have embarked on this is one of a very small number I have stuck with . Well done Mr Hicks, now hurry up with 11.
A must read to really enjoy the 'In Her Name' series. It fills in the time between when Reza and Eustus have graduated from Quantico and where their story picks up in chapter 11 of 'Confederation', Reza's introduction to life as a Marine in the Red Legion and the incredible challenges he faces being accepted back into the human sphere.
Brilliant. As before, well written with characters who are totally believable. Old friends and new, and a tying together of many elements. Read it in one go, now I'm going back to the start so I can enjoy it again.
This series is a treasure to read. I really enjoyed reading this prequel. So much detail about Reza's life. Make sure you read all of the books. Michael R. Hicks writes a great book.
Another great read from Mr Hicks, I've read the whole series of In her name three times now and enjoy them every time, great story line, interesting characters, and an imagination to create so much, excellent.
I have read all of books in the series and have always enjoyed each. The constant tug back & forth by Reza between his humanity & his adopted race is highlighted in this episode.
I have re-read the whole story more times than I care to admit and this is a part I never knew was missing. Loved it, thank you Mr Hicks. Only thing I don't like about it was that it ended.
I always get swallowed up in the magic of the characters and all they go through, hoping we will get to a book that will eventually finish this story of war and sacrifice and the power of love somehow surprising us at the end
Again, from the first chapter, I was drawn back into the lives of the characters I have loved for so long now. I was on excited to find this book just waiting for me to read. And now I'm anxiously awaiting the next chapter.
Such a great story that being me back to the heart and soul of the In Her Name series. Thanks Michael for writing it and can’t wait for any follow up stories
Michael, glad you’re back. Now get to work on more books and never stop writing. It’s been too many years since the last. If I could give it 10 stars I would.
Always enjoyed in her name this is as good as the others. Hope there are more to come. If you don't like Bitter Harvest, neither do I, this is much better.
To take as long to write as this book took it was a huge disappointment to me compared to the other 9 books. Hopefully the next book of this series will be of the previous standards.
