Annabel's not surprised when nobody recognizes her at her 10 year reunion. The spotty fat teen nicknamed AnnaBall by the school bullies is long gone. But standing on the edge of the popular crowd, she still feels like that girl. That is, until Jack, her teen crush, starts flirting with her. Much to her amusement, he has mistaken her for Christy Blake, Annabel's chief tormenter before she moved to France in their last year.
It's just a bit of fun at first, letting Jack believe she's Christy. After all, he was nuts about her before she said au revoir to England. And when he asks Annabel out, the fun becomes something even more interesting. The more they date the deeper they fall for each other. So what if Annabel has to fib a little to keep up the façade?
As the lies start compounding, and she realizes that they're falling in love, she has to tell him who she really is. But she'll lose the love of her life if she does.
Michele writes books packed with heart and humor, best friends and girl power. She also writes cozy comedies under the pen-name Lilly Bartlett. Lilly’s books are full of warmth, romance, quirky characters and guaranteed happily-ever-afters.
A very short read about a woman who turns up at her 10 year school reunion and she’s mistaken for one of the popular girls by her high school crush ✨ . This book was enjoyable and I liked the twist at the end. 2.5 🌟
Told in a convincing professional young-adult voice, Michele Gorman’s Weightless brings two former high-schoolers together, reigniting a once imaginary romance with all its enticing dreams and possibilities. Unfortunately, Jack has mistaken dietician Annabel for the gorgeous nemesis of her miserable teens, and Annabel goes along with the mistake, not wanting to remind him of the spotty overweight girl she used to be. Can true romance be built on lies such as this?
Weightless combines the story of Annabel’s mistaken identity with another teenager’s desperate search for individuality. Wise lessons in self-esteem are offered through natural conversation and memories, and the writing has a pleasingly light and humorous touch, even with Annabel’s soul-searching and guilty secrets. Nicely edited (though an awkward homonym gave me pause for thought), smoothly written, and quickly read, this short romantic novella has a pleasingly English flavor with fun characters and sweet light-hearted plot.
Disclosure: I was given a free ecopy prior to release, and I offer my honest review.
This story was sweet, and had a happy ending, which almost all romance readers demand. My main complaint is it ended too soon. I needed an epilogue or a few chapters of the after everything is okay point. I wanted to see the happy.
Spoilers below : . . . . . . . . . .
So, I totally saw the twist coming a mile away, but it didn't help with the angsty feelings. I cannot stand a liar in relationships, so I knew going in this would be hard for me. I saw the clues sprinkled in along the way, but I wanted to revisit those things AFTER they were honest. Like the tattoo... and I really NEEDED 'Jack's' perspective, at least when she was outed or reading the letter or something to.show he was struggling just as much.
I think most of these issues are personal preference, which is why I didn't penalize the author for that. The story is well-thought-out and well-written. It was enjoyable, easy to understand, and I didn't notice any glaring mistakes. This is a good book. If you don't have the same issues I do, I'm sure you'll absolutely think it is a sweet, quick and enjoyable read. If you do have the same hangup, I find being as informed on the issue beforehand helps, so know there is lying that starts out as harmless but, like most lies, quickly snowballs to other lies to cover the first. The two have almost instant chemistry that has nothing to do.with who they were in high school, and they didn't lie about anything of any real importance. At least in my opinion. In real life that doesn't matter as much, bit in a work of fiction, I can be much more forgiving of lies.
Weightless is a classic story of mistaken identity. Think a modern day Shakespearean tale.
At her 10 year high school reunion Annabel is shocked to find herself on the receiving end of her high school crush’s attentions. There is only one problem with this and that is he thinks she is someone else. Namely, Annabel’s old high school bully, Christy.
As Annabel’s web of lies gets bigger and bigger she finds herself falling more and more in love. Can she save the relationship or is she destined to lose the man she loves.
Weightless is a fun short story. It resonates with us all who dread going to the reunions with our high school classmates because we all want to impress. I think the lesson I have learned from Weightless is just to avoid reunions at all costs!

Hanging out on the fringes of her 10-year high school reunion, Annabel isn’t surprised when no one comes racing up to her with squeals of “Oh my gosh I haven’t seen you in sooooo long!!!” She’s planning to spend the party the same way she spent her high school career: hiding in the shadows and hoping that no one, especially Christy Blake, notices her. Christy Blake was a bully who specialized in making Annabel (or AnnaBall as she was known) feel terrible about herself. Annabel managed to pull herself out of the mire of horrible feelings and find a career that is fulfilling, as well as lose 70 pounds, but she still feels the barbs that Christy Blake stuck into her ten years ago.
So when her high school crush Jack Winslow mistakes her for the infamous Christy Blake at the reunion and asks her out, her high school sensibilities kick in and she says yes…without bothering to correct his mistake. One thing leads to another, and Jack and Annabel become closer and closer, and end up falling in love. Unfortunately Annabel has never corrected the initial case of mistaken identity. Instead, she has come back with half-truths and tricky answers to his questions about her life in and after high school as Christy Blake. It’s a precarious house of cards, and Annabel’s counseling people at her job about how important it is to find inner beauty and peace, yet living the complete opposite. Will Jack be able to deal with it when the truth finally comes crashing down between them?
Michele Gorman’s short story Weightless is a really fun read. The premise is easy to follow, and even though there are multiple cringe-worthy moments, you never really want to put it down. I think Ms Gorman chose the right route when she decided to tell this tale as a short story. I feel like a full novel would just drag out the situations a little too much. This was the perfect vehicle for the given plot line. She managed to inject humor, tension, and enough details that you never felt like you were missing out on anything into the 40-ish pages of this story.
Weightless is a well-told story that flows comfortably and reads easily. With Valentines’ right around the corner, why not treat yourself to this charming little gem?
Weightless is a short story by Michele Gorman, and having enjoyed her previous books (which include Single in the City, Bella Summer Takes a Chance and more recently, The Curvy Girls' Club), I had to check it out.
When one-time school heartthrob Jack meets Annabel at the school reunion, it's a strange moment. Especially when he mistakes her for her popular, school nemesis, Carly. After all, Carly was the beautiful girl that everyone adored. Unfortunately, Annabel was was invisible to everyone but the bullies, including Carly, who constantly poked fun at her size. So when she's lurking in the shadows and is approached by Jack, who was once the boy of her dreams, she's immediately surprised.
Annabel has come a long way since school, ditching the bullies to go to uni, dropping the weight and gaining a successful career as a dietician, helping others through not just weight loss, but also to re-gain that lost body confidence. And when she's thought to be the girl who once put her through so much misery at school...well, why not go along with it?
Amused, she plays along - after all, what's the harm in pretending for one night only? But things quickly become difficult when Jack wants to see her again. And when the pair start dating, it's only a matter of time before the secret's out.
Can Annabel really tell him the truth? That she's not Carly, but the big, bullied girl who used to admire him from afar?
I finished Weightless in one sitting, unable to put it down until I had found out just what happened to Annabel and Jack. Though this story did not end as I had expected! The're a special twist that's surprising and fun, and really made the set-up much more exciting. I instantly liked Annabel and had to keep reading to see how far she could take her new alter-ego.
Weightless is a wonderful story about mistaken identity, confidence, love, and learning to love yourself for who you are.
With Weightless, Michele Gorman offers a very short but fun story about a woman who attends her ten year high school reunion and is mistaken for her nemesis. Initially, Annabel does not correct him and figures she will let it play out and will eventually come clean. What harm could it cause? Unfortunately, as the lies increase, so do their feelings for one another. Annabel knows she faces losing the love of her life but also knows she cannot let the lies continue. The big question is does she come clean or risk being exposed and what will happen when Jack learns the truth?
I really enjoyed this story and empathized with Annabel’s predicament. Though she is no longer the overweight teen, as an adult, she still feels the insecurity she felt back then. She has worked hard to lose the weight and has redefined herself as a dietician, helping others battle their weight issues. I thought it was completely understandable why Annabel would be reluctant to disclose the truth when the man she had a major crush on would show interest in her. In her place, I don’t know if I would have handled it differently, either. This little book delivers a huge surprise when the truth is revealed and the bottom drops out for Annabel. I felt bad for Annabel and the charade she felt she had to play and I felt bad for Jack for the feelings of betrayal and loss. I liked them both and didn’t want to see either one of them hurt.
My Final Verdict: This book is filled with characters you will feel connected to and a story that keeps the reader engaged and interested. If you are in between full length books and looking for a fun and short read, I highly recommend giving Weightless a try.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of Weightless from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Annabel was a bit of a nobody at school, subjected to taunts from the cooler kids because of her weight. Ten years have passed and while Annabel has shed the weight, she's still nervous as she attends her school reunion, especially when her former crush, Jack Winslow, starts chatting to her. But when Jack mistakes Annabel for Christy Blake, once the most popular girl at school, Annabel plays along. The pair hit it off and start to date. Annabel knows she must tell Jack her true identity, but she doesn't want to lose him.
At around 40 pages, Weightless is a quick read you can read in one or two chunks, or pick up whenever you have a spare moment. Despite being a short story, I felt I really got to know Annabel and her struggles throughout her teenage years. She doesn't set out to deceive Jack, but once the mistake is out there and Annabel fails to correct it, it becomes increasingly harder for her to tell the truth. She likes Jack and wants them to have a future but she's afraid she'll lose him when he realises who she really is.
Since leaving school, Annabel has become a dietician. One of her clients is fifteen-year-old Kate, who I thought was a brilliant character. We only see flashes of Kate, but she really stood out for me.
If you're looking for a quick, fun read, Weightless could be the book for you.
This is a short story (approx 40 pages) so ideal if you want something quick, lighthearted and easy to read. I hadn't ready anything by Michele before so wasn't sure what to expect. I was really pleased that her style of writing got me hooked straight away. You are introduced to Annabel and I immediately warmed to her. I found myself rooting for her and Jack throughout and at times I would happily have jumped into the story and rescued her.
I also felt a clear message coming through about being yourself and loving yourself for who you are, not to let others bully you or drag you down and I have certainly taken some of that away with me.
A great read for a commute, or before sleep, or just when wanting a short down time.
Even better, at time of writing it is free for kindle on Amazon. Will definitely purchase more titles many Michele.
This is a fun look at what it's like to go to school reunions, we all want to think of ourselves as successful and better than what we were at school and probably still want that acceptance. And it's no different for Annabel - she still craves the acceptance hence posing as someone she's not and therein starts the fun and games! As the plot moves long you're just waiting for everything to unravel.....
I really enjoyed this short rom com story, it moves at a good pace, has some really funny and touching moments and makes you think what would I have done in Annabel's shoes? (think I would told a few little white lies too!)
With a nice twist at the end, this short story will definitely leave you wanting more.
"Weightless" by Michele Gorman was a cute and whimsical short story, (64 pages). There were a lot of twists and turns that I didn't expect and that's what I liked most. The end surprised me a lot, making it anything but predictable. Annabel's (Christy's) character was very well written and I liked her quite a bit. Jack's character was also very intriguing, up until the very end. (Nope, no spoilers!)
If you're looking for a quick book that you can read in a few short hours, "Weightless" is the book for you. Michele Gorman is a very talented author and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next!
I have read several other books of Michele's and have enjoyed them all. I was excited to see that another one of her stories was being released and jumped at the chance to read it.
Weightless was a very enjoyable, quick read with a nice little twist at the end. It just goes to show that things are not always what they seem to be and that 'looks can be deceiving'. I love the way Michele writes and it is always a pleasure to escape to her story-worlds and meet her newest characters.
The premise and plot twist is actually interesting. It can make a very amusing novel if only it's dig deeper. Didn't know this is a short story / novella. I kinda suspected the plot twist, but it's still a nice twist :) Didn't feel the chemistry of the 2 main character, I hate how their relationship just suddenly grow without much explanation or incidents happening. The ending was also very abrupt.
I am a HUGE fan of Gorman. She writes characters that are a bit wacky, but so darn loveable! In Weightless you enjoy a quick read that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. Mix ups happen, right...but what happens if you decide to go along with it. Go on the fun and enjoyable journey with Christy, I mean Annabel and see what happens! 5 star short story!
A fast-paced story that grabs you from the first page. Who can blame Annabel for taking advantage of her weightloss to get the man of the dreams? Except that things don't quite turn out as she expected. The twist was a bit too much out of the blue for me, but nevertheless a huge surprise and one that gave a satisfying end to the story. Great writing and a loveable main character. Very enjoyable!
This is a really lovely story with a big moral. Looks really can be deceiving. Believable and loveable characters who are not all that they seem. I loved the double twist in the story.
I don't think I've ever read a standalone short story before (normally a collection). This book was over before it started. There wasn't anything I disliked about it, but it didn't pull me in either.
This was a little free to download e-book by Michele Gorman. It's about mistaken identity as a school reunion and the events that unfold in the following weeks. I enjoyed it.
