Liza Elway wants to be with Richard forever, but on the morning after he asks for her hand, Liza’s man makes a second request: To revisit her old
At heart, Lexi Maxxwell is a dirty word girl. In her ambitious ABC series, Lexi explores individual words in ways that no author has before. Lexi Maxxwell’s ABC series is unlike any erotica you’ve ever read.
Because Richard is 23 years Liza senior, and knowing both himself and her better than she does, he uses his age and experience as a rational to the unusual request Liza sees herself confronted with. Furthermore, Richard needs to know that she knows he will be enough for her five years into the marriage and wants to make sure Liza knows what she is saying yes to.
While Richard is a mature, educated male that has built a successful business for himself, his request made me question if this was his way of later suggesting having an open marriage. As I learned more about the characters, I've found this not to be the case. There is definitely chemistry/love between Richard & Liza. I loved how Richard cooks for Liza, feeds her, and the love scenes between the two are realistic of any couple. He knows her body, thoughts, & emotions without her saying a word.
Most of the secondary characters from Liza's past (Cooper, Sasha/Hope, Zoe, & Ellie) felt flat to me with the exception of Cooper & Zoe. During her self discovery journey, she saw a transformation in Cooper and discovered she still loved Zoe. I couldn't wait to get to the chapter entitled, "Wedding" to see who was at the altar with Liza.
As much as I like Richard, I constantly asked myself was this man a genus of just plain dumb to make such a demand of his fiancée. The phone call Liza makes to Richard while at Zoe's is touching. It was the first time I felt Richard's vulnerability. I loved the lines, "...I'm not seeking your body, for I know that vessel is temporary, and can merely borrow it at best. But I seek your heart, and commitment. If I'm giving mine to you, I must know I have yours in return. Less will kill me." Touched as I was after reading that, I was equally upset. I felt his concerns were feelings that should have been voiced and sorted out BEFORE the proposal, not after.
This is another thought provoking novel by LM. The concept of Engaged is interesting and kept me engaged throughout. This novel makes you think what would you do if plagued with this scenario?
This novel is well and eloquently written while still portraying Maxxwell’s usual in-your-face writing style. She definitely had me saying WTF and wondering where the story was going, while at the same time keeping ploughing forward to find out what’s going to happen next.
This novel is definitely firmly placed in the erotica category. That said, even in that genre I need to get to know the characters. Those presented in this novel are extremely superficial. Yes they have attitudes and beliefs but there’s nothing more to them than the storyline itself. You do get to know them a bit better throughout the story, but there’s never any real connection with the characters.
Overall, this was a captivating and very hot story. It was an enjoyable read.
