If the movie had your curiosity, then this graphic novel will have your attention!

This is not just a mere adaptation of the movie, but the very first draft of the script that Quentin Tarantino envisioned. While the true essence of the story is same, there are tons of cool new scenes, backstories, and reimagined incidents. Hell, even the climax is different!

The story tells the adventures of Dr. King Schultz, dentist-turned-bounty hunter and his partner Django Freeman, Slave-turned-bounty hunter. Be ready for excessive violence (Even more than the movie), racism, cruelty, slavery, vengeance, love and a lot of awesomeness.

And don't forget,

The D is silent.

Finally caught up with this one. Vaguely I recall something about it being controversial (sigh). What would be truly controversial would be if Tarantino were to do a movie that was not yet another revenge fantasy..... And of course cleaning up the world with ultra-violence is what we do really well in the middle east. So, culture critique? No, probably not.

Also, and last thesis, promise ; violence in movies has increased exponentially with the advent of cgi. And things like the matrix and lord of the rings (you notice how they make it so the heroes are killing the right kinds of entities?). I'd estimate that the beginning of the curve can be found roughly around the inauguration of Reagan. Enough already please?

It's a black comedy and full of black humour. The story was very dramatic and the contents were really dark, as if combining all the cruel sides of reality.

What a joy it was to read a graphic novel after far too long. I can’t pretend to be a devotee - they are so expensive for what usually turns out to be a relatively quick read - but when I do treat myself it’s always an experience.

Django isn’t just a film adaptation; it’s the first draft of the script written in a graphic novel format. We’re given far more scenes and backstories than the film permitted; I was particularly engrossed by Broomhilda’s experiences after being separated from Django at the auction. I always found her to be an unexplored character, so I devoured this storyline.

The artwork is excellent and does well to convey the moods of the scene, whether this is a sombre reflection on the audacities of slavery, or a chaotic depiction of the ultra-violence Tarantino is so fond of. Something jumped out of every panel for me; it was intoxicating.

It’s now quite clear to me that it’s time to gather some pennies together and dive back into this gorgeous format of storytelling properly.

A great comic book featuring a story from the heart of the darkest page in American History. Slavery shown in it's true form without romantising it at all. The movie was great, the comic book with extra scenes based on the first draft of Tarantino's script is even greater.

The depiction of how black people were treated is horrific and brings disgust and tears to the readers' eyes. I'd recommend it but keep in mind that fact.

This thing may as well have been a hotel that put me up for a few hours, because this is the best western I've read in a long long time.

My desire to watch the movie now is beyond excitement.

Django is a freed slave who learns to be a bounty hunter so he can find and free his wife.

Schultz is a German bounty hunter who frees Django so he can help identify people who have bounties on them.

Candie is a deeply vicious soul that just views the world as his plaything.

I don't want to get too much more into it so as not to spoil anything. This is amazing, and you would be doing yourself a favor if you read this, whether you are a fan of graphic novels, comic books, westerns or not.

Tarantino himself writes the introduction to this story and claimes it's the first draft of the screenplay. It includes scenes that were deleted from the movie. Its rugged art style portrays the main characters distinctly from their movie counterparts. After reading it, I got the urge to watch the movie again. I hope I'll find the time for it.

The action takes place in the Wild West, before slavery was abolished, where black men and women have no rights. Dr. King Schultz is a successful bounty hunter who uses somewhat unorthodox but effective methods in his trade. The first mission will be followed by many more that will strengthen the bond between him and Django. Schultz is motivated by money, but the younger Django wants to reunite with his wife.

Graphic novel based on Tarantino's original script for Django Unchained. Interesting to see what was changed before the film's final cut. Some scenes in this version were more brutal and sinister than the movie; others were rightfully removed or altered. A must-read for Tarantino fans.

9.5/10

Comic series inspired by Quentin Tarantino infamous film with the same title. So if you were a big fans of the film, I highly suggest you to find this comic too.

The story stick to the original screenplay & story line of the movie, but with more in detail character development & story plot. Quentin stated in the preface in this comic that this is the actual storyline he did before the movie. Because of the limited movie screen time, he cannot apply all of it into the big screen, thus the end product & some of the plot had been altered to fix into the screen time. So what's being done in this comic is the actual, early idea of this movie screenplay by the director.

Plus the beautiful & raw drawings by many talented illustrators, whats more to be missing about?

Its a must for this film & director's fan. Try to find it nearest you.

If your wondering what good entertainment is, well it is this. The story has humor, romance and revenge which make for a very compelling and witty read as well as an entertaining watch. The story is truthful in that slaves were treated like animals in order to fuel the white persons (not all) ego during the era of the antebellum south. Steven's character (a black male that works in the house) is a good example of this ego that was not and is not exclusive to white people; he constantly questions Calvin about letting Django sit at the table and stay in the house. Which makes the story more about people and not about racism, which I liked and enjoyed. My favorite character is Dr. King Schultz. A man who kills people for a living which he acknowledges is a buisness of flesh for cash. He also points out that Slavery is a buisness of flesh for cash, and then explains that he feels bad about his business and the buisness of slavery as well. He ends up killing Calvin Candie after Hildi becomes free in a very intense and subtle way. Well it was subtle until he shot him. He is a remarkable character. Apart of me likes him as much as I do because of his vast vocabulary, the reference to Alexander Dumas, and the dramatic moment when he tells Candie goodbye.

This is the original movie script and includes extras like Broomhilda's back story, an extended dialogue between Django and Stephen and a slightly different ending. Fortunately the hilarious eye holes in the bags scene is still there. The art deteriorates about two thirds of the way through into dark, smudgy, indistinct images, quite the contrast to the clean, crisp lines that preceded it. I have no idea why multiple artists were used on the book, but it does result in some inconsistency. It is difficult to read the book without the corresponding movie scenes flashing through the mind. I found the movie to be more compelling because the excellent performances really brought the dramatic word play to life.

Very nice! A movie adaptation that gets it right. The artwork is brilliant. Even if you've never seen the movie, this is still a top-notch western. And if you have seen the movie, know that this was adapted from the script, so it includes deleted scenes and/or scenes that were never filmed for whatever reason. Possibly the finest movie adaptation I've read since Goodwin and Simonson's Alien ...

Aside from the screenplay, this comic book version is the only way to experience what Django could have been, and even then it isn't quite complete.

When it comes to the film itself, it's a mixed bag. I still think it should have been two movies instead of one like Kill Bill. Too many backstories and subtext are left on the floor, with a rushed third act and some questionable editing.

You can read more about that here: https://bit.ly/3L8A2rp

God damn, dialogue this good does something to me. I believe I finished the first issue and had to stop and pause for a moment. Maybe even retire into a dark room for a lie down and a little gentleman's alone time. Ok, all jokes aside, On of the main strengths of a Tarantino script is going to be the dialogue. The man has a knack for crafting interesting and engaging material that the vast majority of creators are either unwilling or unable to match. Add the western theme into the mix. A genre that is almost entirely forgotten about, I guess because its just a little bit too problematic for modern times. So, we have an outstanding, well written story, set within a criminally underused genre, and to top it off, we have the man himself, R.M Guerra on art. To say that his issues of Scalped where the very thing that kept that comic great, when Jason Aaron decided to start drinking the modern comics Kool Aid and proceeded to screw up his story. But two issue in, and I'm high as a kite on this rather special magnificence. Sadly, I believe it was issue three when Guerra disappeared from the book, appearing sporadically throughout its final four issues. Now, I can't say exactly what was behind this choice, although the same thing happened on Scalped, with him only drawing a fraction of the books final arcs. But this shit is seven issues long. Seven. Admittedly, they are longer issues, although I believe there were five artists in total who worked on this book by the time it was all said and done. Five! Who the fuck thought this was acceptable. When your someone like Tarantino, you're used to getting what you want. So why wasn't this book entirely done by Guerra? Celebrity antics aside, I would have thrown an unholy tantrum if I found out my book story turned into the town bike, with every artist nearby getting a ride on it. This really is just about the only thing that marred an exceptional reading experience. A reading experience sorely lacking from comics books. Its frank and at times graphic depiction of the deep south during slavery was, obviously confronting, but an amazingly well written little slice of non PC pie, that never became the white guilt stick to beat the majority of the readers of the story. You can ruminate on the machinations of the past, seeing the error or humanities ways in the past and hopefully learn from them without turning people into perpetual victims or villains, and craft a memorable and magnificent story while you're at it. I highly recommend Django Unchained, although will start a posthumous petition to get R.M Guerra to go back and draw the whole damned thing. 4.75/5

This was just bloody fantastic!

If you’ve seen the film, you know exactly what you’re getting into here. This is about as true to the film as you can get with an adaptation. Apparently this was created from the original, pre-cut script that Tarantino penned for the film, so there’s more here than what made the final cut. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen the movie, so I can’t point out exactly what was different, but overall it felt like the film, just done in the graphic novel form, which was awesome.

We’re following a bounty hunter who frees a slave to help complete a bounty, and then the two start working together. The end goal is to find the now-free man’s wife, and they go to some interesting - and brutal - lengths to do just that. It’s bloody and disturbing and nothing short of goddamned brilliant.

The art looked great here with characters that felt like the actors playing them. That said, they were not direct drawings of the actors, so it’s able to stand on its own, which I thought was a smart move. What is the same, though, is that incredible script. Tarantino has a way with dialogue that few do, and it works just as well in the written form as it does on screen.

I loved this. I love the film, too, though. If you like one, you’ll like the other, and both are absolutely worth your time. I genuinely had a hard time putting this one down as I was reading it, which hasn’t happened in a very long time.

4.5 stars* only cuz the ending is so not like the movie. In which I need to find a beauty in the difference between the two. Especially bc this graphic was made to include everything the director didn’t get to add to the movie so maybe the creator of this film really wanted the ending to be the way the graphic was written, but for movie and entertainment purposes they made the movie a bit more drastic. And maybe this more simple ending was really the way Quentin really wanted it to be. Anyway, I really loved seeing new and familiar stuff compared to the movie, seeing more insight and connecting more dots than I originally had. I loved knowing how the voices should sound and they ways they speak. Since this takes place 1869 and in the south there was for sure an accent going on and they had some weird word spellings bc of it. Anyway. A graphic is loki so tiring for your eyes bc there’s a lot to look at but it’s so fun I definitely will be getting the sequel to this and in the future I won’t turn down the graphic novel section in Barnes and noble. I enjoyed and definitely recommend if you loved the movie.

This is an excellent graphic novel as the illustrations are top-notch and the story is fantastic.

The only setback is that it is identical to the movie. And that's hardly a setback as the movie is so great. All I mean is that I already knew what was going to happen and that was unfortunate, not that I would want it to go any other way.

The graphic novel does include a few scenes that did not make the movie so those are nice little extras although they're often, much like the rest of the story, pretty graphic and a bit hard to stomach.

More on that, Tarantino, much like Mark Twain often uses satire to tell about the great injustices in the world. He does it in a very profane, graphic way that really drives home how intolerable slavery and the treatment of people was in this time. It's hard to read/see sometimes and that is the point - to not whitewash history. In many ways I'm sure he wish he could have gone further. Be prepared for that and enjoy the plot which is pretty great with a satisfying ending.

As Tarantino himself describe the novel; it is like a draft of the script that would end up being the film. As someone who has not yet watched the film (you might want to before delving into this), I may have missed out on some of the nuances of the story.

This is a solid read. Be warned if you haven't seen the movie; As this is the 1800's and slavery is in full swing; there is plenty use of the N-word. My only beef with the novel, which had an influence on the rating, was the artwork. I think this would have been better served if there was one illustrated used. The quality artwork does diminish as the story progresses.

I will most definitely returned to this after watching the movie.

If you liked the movie you will for sure like this comic. The drawings are as beautiful as they are at times horrifying showing the ways of a slave for good and bad.
This story is beautifully told throw each route, through each artist from beginning to end. It is the sad tale of Django Freeman going from slave to bounty hunter with help from King Schultz. His goal to find the slave owner that have his wife and free her. It is a long way but in the end he does succeed and they ride off together.
I love the dynamic of this story and how the artists managed to bring it to life, showing the emotions, brutality along the way.
