Marissa Spencer’s world had been turned upside down since waking up one morning with magical powers. She has no idea where they came from and controlling them has not been easy. To make matters worse, these new abilities seem to have brought with them a mysterious evil force that torments her dreams and tracks her down dark alleys. With the help of her sexy PI boss, Jack Slade—whom Marissa has always had a crush on—she will have to fight a battle for power that began before she was born. Along the way, she’ll discover a family she didn’t know she had, an inheritance she may not want, a strength she never knew was within her, and a love she’d only dreamed of.
I've always loved to read, loved losing myself in the lives of the people on those pages. Sitting at work one day, I started to wonder what would it be like if I woke up one day with magical powers. How would that effect my life? Where did they come from? Why me? As I thought about the answers to those questions, Magic Found started coming together and it took off with a life of its own. When the rest of the Marquand family demanded their own stories, The Magic of the Heart Series was born.
There's a somewhat decent plot under all the cheese, but it wasn't strong enough. This was strictly a Paint-By-Numbers paranormal romance. Magic. Check. Sex. Check Danger. Check Magical Sex While In Danger. Check.
Marissa wakes up from a scary dream, and suddenly she has powers. So. She turns to her longtime crush/boss smexy P.I. Jack Slade (yeeees, that's really his name) to help her unearth the secrets of her past. Naturally, they both find each other irresistible. But. They've kept their feelings in check for several years, because they work with each other. Suddenly they can No Longer Resist. *insert tons of sex scenes that don't help move the plot forward* Please don't leave comments about how I 'Don't Get Paranormal Romance'. I do. No, it's not my favorite genre, but if it's done right, I like it. My personal opinion was that this was poorly written. Again. My Personal Opinion. Beyond that, there were things that struck me as odd or unlikely. For example: Marissa was wrapped in an embroidered baby blanket when she was left at the orphanage. No tags. No label. Slade (Master P.I.) thinks that they'll be able to track down the person who embroidered it... 30 years ago. And that this person might remember who ordered the blanket... 30 years ago. No. No, to that whole line of thinking. There's not a real private investigator who would even suggest something so stupid.
Some of the plot, while not terrible original, could have been interesting to me. I like witches, and I like mysteries. However, the writing felt amateur, and I had to force myself to finish. I would have DNF'ed it, but I felt guilty about the whole Winner-Winner-Chicken-Dinner thing. Anyway. I finished it.
This looks like the author's first book, so maybe the next one will be better?
The bones, themselves, have what it takes. Unfortunately, with only two characters, this story drug on forever... and I felt like I wasn't making any progress until about sixty percent. Too drawn out, not enough build up to keep it going.
I don’t think that I have ever had a harder time trying to come up with a grade for a book than I am having on this book. It is definitely a middle of the road type of book, so definitely less than 4 stars, but it is also better than other books I’ve read. I’m torn between giving it 2.5 and 3 stars, but I’m leaning more towards the 2.5. Let’s get down to the nitty gritty and hopefully I’ll be able to make up my mind by the time I’m done.
"Marissa Spencer’s world has been turned upside down since waking up one morning with magical powers. She has no idea where they came from and controlling them has not been easy. This description doesn’t really tell you a lot, which is a bit ironic because the author definitely has a problem when it comes to telling instead of showing. This was actually once of my biggest problems with the book–so much of it was simply told to me and not shown. For instance, there is a scene early on in which Marissa is attacked and instead of having this scene in Marissa’s POV, we get Jack telling us that something was wrong and we don’t even get there until the entire thing is over. I don’t know if we were not supposed to know that Marissa has powers, although the word magic is in the title, so I’m a little perplexed as to why we couldn’t get that scene from her POV.
The next problem I had was that there was a whole lot of info-dumping going on. I don’t know how many people actively think about things that happened to them in the past, but Marissa and Jack sure do. I don’t need to have everything told to me all at once. I’m a delayed gratification kind of girl. All at once just doesn’t cut it for me.
Finally, there is no character development whatsoever. Each character behaved in the way the scenes needed them to behave and once that scene was over they reverted to their former behaviors. It was maddening, especially when it came to Aiden, Marissa’s long lost relative. He had real reason not to trust anyone and I had a lot of hope for him, especially when he was first introduced. I thought that he was going to be this badass character, who was able to handle himself. Unfortunately, I just didn’t get this from him. He whined a lot about his new powers, and I do get this, but at some point, the whining needed to stop. The sad thing is that none of these characters were at all complex and with their backstories, they really could have been.
This is obviously the author’s first book (or one of her first books) and it suffers from a lot of new author mistakes. I really wish she waited to write this until she had some more experience writing because the plot was good. If a more experienced writer had written this, it would have been awesome. I would love to see what someone like Nora Roberts could do with a book like this. I wish I could have liked this book more and I want to know what happens in the next books, but I don’t think I will. I don’t like to be disappointed and unless someone else was going to write then, that’s exactly how I will feel as I read them.
I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this story! I don't know why I waited so long to start reading it. It was fantastic. Every aspect of it pulled me in and made me want to know more. Wow!
Although this story started out with a focus on two people, it quickly became a story about more than that. It was about a family. It was about good versus evil. It was about love and loyalty. It was about uncovering secrets. Whew!
This book had mystery, intrigue, romance, and fantastical elements. I loved the setup and the hanging thread at the end. I have to know what comes next.
I enjoyed this one find. A paranormal romance with found family and bad guys chasing the main couple. It’s a four book series so hopefully the other books will be as good or better, but not bad for a debut book. I do like that while there’s a running plot throughout the series, the main mystery and bud guy in this book was solved/dealt with.
I picked this up as part of Hoopla’s Bonus (free) Borrows. I’m glad, as I’d have been sad if I used one of my Library Allowance to read it.
The story was good but seemed a bit like the author was phoning it in. A lot the action was “off screen”. Instead of being told by the person in the fight’s POV and then by the person observing through the window, it was just by the Observer who saw the tail end of the fight.
Lame.
Speaking of lame, a PI named Jack Slade? I guess we’re lucky it wasn’t Sam Spade.

Review:
Marissa is a likeable character, as are the other 'good' characters featured in this book, the first in the series. The premise is interesting, if a little predictable, and held my interest throughout. There is an obligatory 'baddie', a battle of good versus evil, a love story (with a couple of graphic seed scenes) and
a happy ending.
I found myself cheering on Marissa and the rest of the good guys as they struggled against physical and mental enemies.
I'll definitely be reading the next in this series.
Not a bad idea for a book or bad characters but the JRPG aspect of all rumors are true and everything is true on the internet made the characters less believable. A couple editors or proof readers would have been good.
The premise of this novel drew me in. I mean, really, who wouldn't be just a bit freaked out to find out they suddenly had magical powers? Especially when you know you hadn’t had a single drink the night before!
Read on for my thoughts on Magic Found. No true spoilers, promise.
**I received an e-ARC from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review of Magic Found. This in no way changes what I thought of the book.**
To say that Marissa is having a weird day would be an understatement. The dream that jarred her awake was frightening and seemed more like a memory than a dream. The hooded figure looming over her put off such a sense of evil that the remnants of the nightmare stayed with her long after she left her bed.
While in the shower trying to shake off the odd dream, the second weird moment of the day appeared – right outside of her shower curtain. Shortly after getting herself soaking wet, Marissa realized with annoyance that she forgot to bring a towel in with her. Imagine her terror when a dark shape slowly moved toward her. She could see its outline through the shower curtain and was ready to defend herself from… a blue towel hanging in the air, with nothing holding it up.
That’s enough of a tease. Because the unexplained magic just keeps happening – and how Marissa’s life is about to change is the point of the novel.
Magic Found is a fun and sexy story about a woman who has no knowledge about her family – she was left on a church doorstep as a babe. It is her discovery about how she ended up on those steps, where and who her family are and how the heck did the magic start?
Her crush on her boss Jack will turn into romance while they both search for answers. Some steamy sex scenes, relatives found and mysteries somewhat solved and new mysteries revealed will be discovered before the last page of this novel. (the first book in a new series, so look for more stories)
I enjoyed Magic Found. It will not go on my top favorites list – but it was a good story. I wish though that there had been more showing me the action from the characters point of view or engagement rather than telling me about it. But that is a personal preference of mine in the stories I read.
There are three other novels in this series. I will probably read them, eventually. I’d like to know the rest of the story to see how it develops. But with my current reading list, that may be a few months down the road.
Would I recommend it? Yes, it’s a good story. It’s just not a great, “you must read this now” kind of story – in my opinion. Your’s might be very different. I just wanted a bit more from the novel that I didn’t find.
**I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review** Marissa is 30 years old and works for Slate Investigation. Jack Slate is 35 years old and is her boss. She has fantasized about him since she went to work for him. Marissa left the orphanage at 18, but has worked for Jack for the last 3 years. Marissa had a dream about a hooded man that was very threatening. Marissa had a vision when she held her baby blanket that the nuns had saved for her at the orphanage. Marissa told Jack about everything that was happening. Marissa almost got mugged while walking home one night. She thought it was Jack that had saved her when it was actually one of her new abilities. Marissa had a vision that Jack would get hit and killed. After her warning, Jack was very cautious and it saved him, proving her visions are true. She gets attacked again and the thug tells her she's a witch. Marissa and Jack then go back to the church to talk to the priest and Sister Frances and find out about her family. Sister Frances gives her information to start looking. I found Jack to be very protective, especially as he discovers his feelings for Marissa as the book goes on. He always listens to everything she has to say and tries to help in any way he can. Marissa doesn't really know what to think about these powers as the come and is initially scared of them. She finds it hard to believe that Jack has feelings towards her. She fears for him the more he helps her as they try to figure out what's happening. I sympathize with Marissa as all these changes and powers come into her life. I was happy she had Jack by her side to help with it all and to protect her. I enjoyed the book and recommend it.
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
This story is about a woman with a mysterious past who wakes up one day to discover she has some startling and new powers. Along with her hunky PI boss, she tries to unravel the riddle surrounding her origins and by extension, the reason behind her extraordinary abilities. For years she has been drooling over her boss, but has always maintained a professional demeanor. It very quickly becomes apparent that the feeling is mutual.
If you don't like sex or are easily offended by erotic and explicit prose, don't read this book. If you like all of the above, read this book. The book could double as a sexual handbook. (Naughty Mishap!)
The story is not so complex that you have to reread sections to pick up plot points. There are just enough small twists and surprises to make the book an enjoyable read.
I am looking forward to the sequel. Also, the cover is made of some demonic or alien technology that confuses my fingertips in a most unsettling manner. This alone should make you want to get your hands on a copy.
Magic Found by Misha McKenzie is a wonderful paranormal romance book. On Wednesday Marissa Spencer (the nun who gave her the last name loved Luke Spencer on General Hospital) is a normal 30 year old. She works as an assistant to private investigator, Jack Slade, and she was raised in an orphanage. On Thursday after waking up from a bad dream weird things start to happen to Marissa. She remembers after she got into the shower that she forgot her bath towel and the next thing she knows there is a towel floating outside her shower. And that is only the beginning. Marissa finds out that she has special magical abilities, a brother, cousins, parents, and someone out to kill her and steal her powers! Marissa also finds love with the man she has been lusting after for three years. Read all about Marissa’s adventures in love and magic in Magic Found.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley/Publisher in exchange for an honest review.
A decent plot could have saved this from being another cheesy romance. There is too much unnecessary sex and people just do not fall in love after a week and decide it’s time to get married. Again I was disappointed because I thought this was a paranormal book that was about witches and magic and its more romance than anything with too much emphasis on sex. The character development was lacking, the descriptions were poor, it was predictable and all I wanted was for this book to end but it goes on for a painful 306 pages.
1/5 STARS: **I want to thank the author and/or publisher for providing a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review; all opinions are mine.**
I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads. Totally unrelated to the book itself is the cover. It was a very neat feeling book!
The story is about a woman who wakens from a bad dream and has suddenly developed magical powers. Mostly through accident she discovers she has 3 powers. Working for her P.I. boss the two set out to see where she is from and why some goons are after them.
I won't give too much away and I did enjoy the book. I did have some issues with the story though. I didn't really get the family and why they wouldn't go get their children.
All that said, I would read the next one and see where the story goes.
I got this for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This had promise - the start was entertaining. I don't know what happened though, around 50 pages in, Marissa just became a whinging bitch and I couldn't stand to read any more.
Also the love interest....Jack.. everything felt incredibly fake and forced. AND whatever happened to sexual tension. Geez, give us some breathing room before they jump in bed hey?
The first of 4 and it was dyno-mite!! Superb storyline, strong characters, excellent writing skills and the promise of more to come. You can read a synopsis elsewhere, so I will simply say I cannot wait for the next one. It's seldom you find a first installment with this much going for it and this much promise. Found plenty of Magic here!!
Love the storyline - very exciting. Perhaps a bit too much sexuality for me, not that I mind it, but the storyline was great and likely would have been better if the focus were shifted :). Entertaining though and I will read the rest of the series.
I enjoyed it. Have to admit I skimmed a number of "sex pages". But the story line was great. Child dropped of at an orphanage, 30 years later wakes up with magic powers, falls in love, chased by magical villains and finds her real family. Light beach read.
Loved the story and the characters. Can't wait to get started on book #2. Thank you Misha for bringing the world one more magickal family who fights evil
