This is a side quest series, and this companion to the main story deals with the nightmares of the Bat-family. I don't like horror stories, so I admit my bias.

The Batman story was my favourite of the book. Cought in his worst nightmare, but of course Batman/Bruce Wayne has planned for this, but can even he survive long enough in the dreamworld to find a way out?

Catwoman has never been the good girl. However, could she have messed up so bas that even her own family hates her. Also, who is the strange man she knows he seems to know everything about? I did not like this story.

James Gordon is falling apart in the real world. What would the nightmare world have inshore for him? People should learn not to make wishes with demons. I dark fairy tale.

Nightwing has lost his memory, and that is the best part of his day/nightmare. What did he do and who can he trust, and what is he becoming? This was an ok story.

Tim Drake and Jason Todd don't like each other, but they are family and are caught in their nightmare and are each other's only hope of survival. The second best story in this book.

Then, two backup stories. Why was Damian able to able to stay awake. Also, Black Canary and Red Arrow fall asleep at the worst possible moment. The book finishes with a varient cover gallery.

See my ‘review’ of the core title for my thoughts on the Knight Terrors crossover overall. The spin-off books are just getting broken down and totted up:

Arsenal/Black Canary: 3 stars
Batman: 3 stars
Catwoman: 1.5 stars
Jim Gordon: 4 stars
Nightwing: 2 stars
Robin (Damian): 2.5 stars
Robin (Jason/Tim): 3 stars

Overall: 2.7 stars, rounded up.

Knight Terrors is a collection of issues that have the "Knight Terrors" story arc. What's the deal? Well DC's version of Nightmare (from Marvel) is calling himself "Insomnia". He's messing with the heads of Batman and his friends.

First on the arc is KT: Batman 1 & 2. This story gets a 3 star for story (what's going on with Deadman?) and a 2 for the art. It sorta just leaves us hanging, but I assume we are supposed to read the rest of the arc in other volumes.

Then there is KT: Catwoman #1&2. This one deserves a 2. Kinda of a crappy story about Catwoman and her sister who is a Nun with fighting skills and some weird Morningstar weapon. Also batman seems to be like Year One Batman, for some reason. Just didn't do it for me.

Then we get KT: Detective Comics 1&2. The art here is actually good, but the story is ok. This one I'd give a 3 star rating. Gordon faces a nightmare where he's trying to do the right thing and is harassed by the "Pentapriests of the fifth dimension" and tries to, literally, keep himself from falling apart.

Then we get KT: Nightwing 1&2. The art isn't very good, but the story is decent. Nightwing must fight his way out of Arkham Asylum.

KT: Robin 1&2 has ok art and the story is ok (a 3 star overall) and has Robin (Tim) working with Red Hood to defeat their nightmares.

Then a one-shot called "Sweet dreams" which is poorly drawn like a child's cartoon and tells Damien's journey to find out information about this nightmare scenario.

Then it ends with a one shot from KT:Batman #2 and its a Red Arrow/Black Canary tale. It's ok.

The volume ends with a cool cover art gallery, but overall? Meh. 2 stars overall.

I’ll rate these books individual for how much I enjoyed the mini-series within each book, but I’ll bring this review over to each of the five books in this series. I read the entirety of this event over a weekend in the single issue order that these were published in.

This event gets a lot of bad reviews everywhere I look and while I don’t necessarily agree with those reviews, I couldn’t push too hard against those opinions either. Most of these stories were okay. Some of them I actually really enjoyed (Main storyline, Batman, The Joker, Detective Comics, Shazam, The Flash, Nightwing) and some of them I actually just found to be nothing but a chore to get through (Angel Breaker, Ravager). I don’t see a problem with an event like this taking over a comic line for a couple of months for a quick refresher, but that’s seems to be a lone opinion for these books. I thought a lot of the art was the best parts of some of these stories and that art gave us some horrifying things to look at where we may never have seen in any other circumstance. I enjoy Joshua Williamson’s storytelling for the most part and I’m actually glad he was able to be the architect for something very experimental and different within the DC Universe.

Read Knight Terrors: Dark Knightmares and it was kind of bad. I am sure the pitch was amazing but execution of these stories was so disappointing. Knightmares might be one of the worst events DC made ever. At least many of these stories were special prints and did not push out whatever the regular ongoing stories in these comic series. This book is a collection of several limited series that were Knightmare themed.

Knight Terrors: Batman: Not just badly written but acting like Bruce Wayne (Batman) has never ever in the last billion years of publication has never ever dealt with the death of his parents. It is a dumb idea. Batman should have laughed at this attack on his dreamscape and woken up. Yes even with Deadman controlling his body in the main comic.

Knight Terrors: Catwoman: I don’t know. Catwoman has regrets. Has a dream where her sister is cooler and sexier than Catwoman.

Knight Terrors: Detective Comics (Gordon): Jim Gordon has a weird fetish dream and has a fragile ego(?) over being unable to help his city by allowing a crazy guy in a bad suit run rampant. Also, not actually doing anything to help the criminals that are captured.

Knight Terrors: Nightwing: Weird but one of the stories that could have passed as filler in the main comic. It felt like filler.

Knight Terrors: Robin: This story was kind of fun and could have been part of a regular comic run. Two of the Robin’s but not who you think get trapped in the same nightmare for some reason. They have issues that at least for Redhood I thought were dealt with in the past. The story turns out to be just an excuse for a team-up. At least they get to see and escape from the fog of evil.

Sweet Dreams (Backup story in KT Batman #1): Art is cutesy. Story is fine but actually one of the few stories out of context if you did not read some other Knight Terrors books.

Don’t Miss (Backup story from KT Batman #2): Good story but short and you needed to read other books in the event.

Ok, fine, fine two stars for some of the better stories but in the end not happy with this event.
I can't believe people are paying $40 for this collection in Hardcover, thank you local library.

Whereas the main "Knight Terrors" title covered the important bits of the crossover story, this collection, "Dark Knightmares" takes 5 titles and shows them their nightmares they must overcome so they can strike back against Insomnia.
Batman - In the main title, Deadman uses Batman's body for most of the story. What is Bruce dealing with inside the depths of his mind? Crime Alley... of course.

Catwoman - Selina teams with her sister, a crime fighting nun named Sister Zero. Are they really two sides of the same coin, or can both help Gotham against the new menace?

Detective Comics - Focusing on Jim Gordon, this is the best of this collection, where we see how his true inner strength and determination help him overcome against huge odds.

Nightwing - Dick is confronted with a world where he killed Batman and was brought into Arkham as a hero to the rogue's gallery there. Coming to terms with this possibility, he overcomes much to escape the nightmare.

Robin - Both Jason Todd and Tim Drake face off against feelings of failure and inadequacy, eventually teaming up to escape the nightmare.

Overall, a good tie-in, but I'm not sure I want to read all the other tie-ins since the main title was nothing amazing.
Still good read though. Love when DC allows itself to get dark. Recommend.

Didn’t get a chance to read the detective comics story, but all the other arcs in it are so interesting. Idk who at dc keeps giving Bruce “being a good dad who hugs his kids” arcs but I need to talk to you and thank you because it’s genuinely so pleasant and heartwarming to read. Also batman fighting a giant bat with a gun for a head is just so cool <\3 Catwoman’s story is so interesting and underrated in this too; the tension between Batman, the joker, Catwoman, and her sister throughout just two issues was SO captivating. Tim and Jason finally working out their issues in the Robin book was also SO good. And finally, putting nightwing in the backrooms is insane and I loved it.

A real mixed bag with some really good concepts and some really poor ones too. Still absolutely worth the read and was extra enjoyable with a touch of thunder and rain noises to read too.

First collection: Batman / Bruce
This was alright, it felt a bit fast and parts like gun bat were a bit hamfisted but the dark spooky vibes were well executed and the art style is very reminiscent of the ‘94 version of the crow.

Second collection: Catwoman / Selina
There was some thought beyond ‘this traumatic thing happened therefore it’s their greatest fear’ that some of the others stories fall into, but I still didn’t care for it personally. Very heavy on the religious context and weirdly about snakes? Felt a bit drawn out in comparison to Bruce’s. The way the Joker is drawn though was 🤌

Third collection: Commissioner Gordon
Art was so freaking good. Also left the potential of it not being entirely a nightmare like the others. Also the hint of eldritch abomination was appreciated.

Fourth collection: Nightwing / Dick
The crowning jewel to this omnibus. Good pacing, funny dialogue without losing the atmosphere, nice art. Couple references to poke at and a good helping of villain hero team up. Bit of a basic fear on the terms of deep dark nightmares, but they played most of this one closer to being a nightmare that is terrifying and disorienting in the moment but kind of silly when you look back on it.

Fifth collection: Red Hood and Robin / Jason and Tim
I was really excited to see these two and was also pleased with a shared dreamscape it seemed to offer, but it ended with some very silly (and not in a good way) panels. Took the “trauma thing happened and this is scary” a little too far but the dialogue is the best. What’s happening visually is less important to what’s being said in terms of fears and the life lesson both Tim and Jason come away with.

Sixth(ish) collection: Robin / Damian
No. Ew. Why’d they do him dirty like that for all of four pages.

The second tie-in collection to the Knight Terrors event. Definitely a shade better than the first set of stories overall.

This volume collects:

KNIGHT TERRORS: BATMAN #1-2
Focussed on the caped crusader himself as he struggles with the nightmares he is being dragged through and being trapped in his own body as Deadman tries to get him away from real-world threats in the waking world. Treads many familiar paths in the Batman mental-challenge history so nothing terribly new, but as a 2 issue mini horror jump into the Dark Knights psyche, it does a pretty solid job and the art was very enjoyable.

KNIGHT TERRORS: CATWOMAN #1-2,
Felt painful. I have not enjoyed (and thus not followed) the Catwoman series' for some time now and this one was heavily dependant on knowing ongoing lore (or old lore I never knew) with dramatic changes to Selenas' situation - her giant facial scar being amongst the info needed. The funky art was nowhere near enough to salvage this story which never really managed to feel either like surreal dream journeys or horror or anything that would fit the bill. It was frankly boring. Pretty, but boring.

KNIGHT TERRORS: DETECTIVE COMICS #1-2,
Definitely one of the strongest entries in this volume by far! This one follows Jim Gordon as he tries desperately to save Gotham and has no idea what is going on at all. He is all alone and reality itself is in danger here as a new demonically masked trio summons warped entities to grant wishes and Jim and Gotham are caught in the wake of those wishes - because nothing is ever simple about asking mystic entities to grant your dreams.
From Jims body being cursed and slowly falling apart to his frantic search for answers to stop the trio while he still lives to the dreary atmosphere, the art and writing are solidly on point.

KNIGHT TERRORS: NIGHTWING #1-2
A good, solid storyline that sees Nightwing trapped in Arkham after he murdered Batman himself!
One of the most dream-like and twisted tie-ins to the series sees Grayson in an unlikely team-up with Scarecrow of all people. There are also cameos by the Gotham girl-Bat trio or Oracle, Spoiler and Cassandra. Some may not like the vibe but I enjoyed it quite a bit.
The artwork is truly fun and works so well with the nightmare narrative. Both bright and dark in well executed measure with parts of the finale that I genuinely did not expect, another strong tie-in.

KNIGHT TERRORS: ROBIN #1-2
A surprising entry that had some weak moments but was overall a good one as we Robin (Tim Drake) and Red Hood (Jason Todd) in the aftermath of the nightmare wave. Both are caught in it and by some stroke of chance, are able to partially communicate with each other. Tim faces his inability to save people, starting with his father who was killed by Captain Boomerang; while Jason is faced with his failures as he keeps fighting an unwinnable fight all alone and his choice to take on a name/mantle once used by the very man who brutally murdered him.
It is a well crafted idea for them individually and as a pair of Bat-Sons and I think this was one that I would have liked to see more of because it perhaps suffered a bit from being too short and had to be rushed a wee bit. Artistically/visually this is the one most able to be an outright dream but it is not all that twisted-imagery heavy except for a few moments and it keeps a nice atmosphere throughout.

Overall, this volume is pretty good.

More than anything, I just really enjoy the freedom to experiment this event clearly afforded a lot of writers and artists. And because the idea has been done before that allows it to both speed through the set up and grant us more interesting reactions to the situations. Like this gives us some fucking wild ideas and concepts with some incredible art and designs to support them. most of them allow for explorations of characters from really unique perspectives that we don’t typically see. Like the depiction of Batman's fear that its the symbol he rejects combined with the one he took into this monstrous conglomerate, is absolutely amazing. Same with Jason Todd and Tim Drake really interesting depictions of characters' fears mixed with their symbols to highlight aspects of their character. It even does this for Jim Gordon like his story might be favourite in this book with the way it twists his greatest desire into his greatest fear and a reflection on Gotham City at the same time is incredible. And the Catwoman one which again really takes some swings and is this fascinating meditation of faith and chaos through the superhero genre with a character I did not expect any of that to matter to at all. I really hope we see these designs and ideas come back at some point especially the Pentapriests which are just a fascinating idea and should be utilized again.

Not to say everything works. In particular, I found the Nightwing story to be a real let down with what it could have been. Like we don’t even get to explore these insane, beautifully horrific creature designs and maybe thats supposed to show that Nightwing cannot have his hope taken from him so easily but even then, give me something, man. Also the Damian one is so fucking boring! Like I get that the League of Assassins has given him some training against this but please for the love of god allow Damien Wayne to be vulnerable. Like thats the interesting part of Daimen is that despite all he’s been through, he is a kid and he’s adopted this cool personna because it's been beaten into him to insulate him from the world. The interesting moments are the contrast, when he allows the marsk to drop and allows himself to be vulnerable and that should be a goldmine for this story given Damien is a newer character we haven’t seen him experience his inner fears to the same degree that we have with the older characters but nope it just solves it all in 5 seconds what a waste. And I guess that as an event, this doesn’t do a very good job crafting an overarching narrative but also thats not really the point. Like its more of a collection of storries influenced by an event story and at that it succeeds wonderfully. 8/10

This volume started off super strong, then got worse per story. Starting with the Batman issues, which tied the closest to the main event. It showed what Bruce was dreaming about while Deadman had control of his body. I found this story really compelling and burned through it super fast. I really feel like this should have been inline with the event book, because it would have flowed really nicely with what was going on there. But of course, DC has to hock another useless book at you, with Batman at the forefront, to get you to spend more money for just 2 issues. The fatal flaw of the comic industry sadly (especially DC with Batman).

That being said, the Batman issues are worth reading… and dare I say essential for the Knight Terrors event… but everything else isn’t needed. Even the Robin story, that explains how Robin learned how to fight off his sleep/dreams, wasn’t needed. I found the Detective Comics issues centered around Gordon to be fairly interesting, but the pacing from the rest of this was off. The art on that story was top notch though. The Nightwing story had some funny bits and a really fun/cool art style. After that, the rest of this I either found boring, confusing, inconsequential or just stupid. I also found the rules behind the nightmares and how the characters interacted with them, and frankly the point of Insomnia even being part of them in the first place, to be completely inconsistent.

I feel like these tie-ins as a whole hurt the overall story more than benefit it. I would not recommend buying this book. Just read the Batman issues online, properly mapped alongside the main event, and you’re good.

The first of...a few Knight Terrors tie-in collections sticks all the Batman titles together.

The Batman book, written by Joshua Williamson and Guillem March, is one of the better tie-ins, but relies too heavily on the whole 'Batman was born in Crime Alley' thing which has been done to death by now. Even though it's a Williamson book, I'd hardly say it's an essential tie-in - in fact, none of the tie-ins are.

Catwoman's tie-in, by Tini Howard and Leila Leiz, is messy. There's a lot of things that the dreamscape implies about this world that Selina finds herself in, and what it does say is clear as mud most of the time. It's fun to see Sister Zero in action again, but that's about it.

Detective Comics is easily my favourite, a two-issue romp by Dan Watters and Riccardo Federici that brings forth dark gods, body horror, and Jim Gordon literally falling apart at the seams. If not for the hefty price tag, I'd say this one's worth the price of admission alone.

Nightwing, from Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, and Daniele Di Nicuolo throws Dick in a nightmarish version of Arkham Asylum, but that's about all it does that's remotely interesting. And then the Robin book by Kenny Porter and Miguel Mendonca shoves Tim Drake and Jason Todd into a story that really could have done with more room for both of them.

Not the most offensive collection, but eminently skippable. Grab the two 'Tec issues if you can though.

A varied collection of the Bat family facing their worst fears!

This felt like an all timer at times, so much variation between writers and especially art styles!!
That being said, the majority of this was excellent in both!

The Batman story:
Fantastic, tearjerking, and hit some real special notes!
Constantly have wanted to share to friends!

The Catwoman story:
Felt the opposite of timeless. I thought I knew Catwoman well and while I can keep up with her mob connections past, I felt confused and in hard to follow foreign territory with the sister and nunnery aspects, which really ran the story.

Detective Comics:
This story made me realize Commissioner Gordon really is an all time favorite of mine to follow as a main character. HUGE fan of the prose and writing of Gordon's detective narration! The stakes and nightmarish nature was captured perfectly by the artist in such a uniquely horrifying way! Easily my favorite story, a must read for existential and surreal horror!!!

Nightwing:
Love the gorgeously cartoony artstyle and unique story told within that does some fun work with a lot of favorite Gothamites!

Robin:
An all-timer for fans of Tim and Jason! Love what is said and presented! Feels timeless and a big rec for any Robin fan!

Some of the best variant covers in a gallery collected in the back!
Id highly recommend this collection!

The last of the Knight Terrors collections, I think. For me, the least successful stories were always the ones that present a fully realized alternate reality, because that's not really how nightmares work. Detective Comics, Catwoman, and, to a lesser extent, Nightwing all do this. Detective Comics stars Gordon, in a weird horror infused story that at least has some nightmarish elements. Catwoman is just an alternate take on her first meeting with Batman, and include her sister as a nun-themed hero in one of the worst stories in the book. The Nightwing story is terribly unoriginal: one of the Bats did something awful they can't remember and ends up in Arkham? Seen it before. The second half goes kind of crazy, but it's too little, too late. The Batman story that leads the collection feels the most like nightmare logic, and is one of the best written. The Robin story at the end is almost as good, and stars both Tim Drake and Jason Todd. This was actually a really smart idea. I like seeing these two bounce off each other, and having two separate nightmares means neither wears out its welcome.

A very, very mixed bag of stories adjacent to the main 'Knight Terrors' story arc, this collection suffers from many of the same problems - wildly inconsistent artwork and some sluggish storytelling. It also adds new issues of its own. In dealing with the featured characters' nightmares, the writers (and editors) are sometimes guilty of just throwing together the maddest stuff they can come up with because it won't really matter in the end as it was 'all just a dream.'

The Catwoman and Robin issues suffer most from this but the Batman and Detective Comics issues (based around Jim Gordon) are much, much better, featuring some truly imaginative and thoroughly grotesque horror. Gordon's nightmares in particular are, so far at least, my favourite part of the entire Knight Terrors crossover. Him believing he's literally falling apart while trying to save the city makes for some memorable body horror and the creatures terrorising Gotham are genuinely unsettling in a way only the best horror comics can portray. It's no coincidence that the artwork for these two issues is also excellent.

Knight Terrors is as mid as people say and idk if I need to keep reading it

Batman- 3.5⭐️- very campy, Baby Bruce regurgitates a giant bat with a handgun for a head that is so Chainsaw Man coded
We get a very cute exchange between current Bruce and his inner child

Catwoman - 2.5⭐️ - the whole thing is Selina’s dream until the last page or so, but it’s executed in a way that leaves you confused for a while
Her sister Maggie is Sister Zero, Gotham’s Nun vigilante, the Joker is newly on the rise, and Selina is training Bruce, it was mid

Detective Comics - 5🌟
Jim Gordon’s nightmare, really fantastic

Nightwing - uhhhh 2⭐️ at best- deviantart furry nightmare

Robin - also 2⭐️ at best - Tim Drake and Jason Todd navigate their nightmares ✨together✨
I swear Tim tells Jason “you’re not alone” 3 times within two pages
The Bat family having heart to hearts is becoming less and less of an acceptable story to me

I have mixed feelings on this. Some of the artwork is absolutely stunning. Gordon's story in particular had a very Batman meets Hellraiser vibe going on and it was just stunning to look at. Unfortunately...I didn't find the actual stories very engaging. I know they are nightmares and so they feel very disjointed due to the dream nature of things...and I personally haven't read a lot of the Batman comics so there is likely a lot that's just going over my head on top of everything else...but I really had a hard time getting into these stories. Still had fun for the most part reading them but it's not something I see myself ever picking up again.

This is a collection of stories revolving around the villain Insomnia against Batman and friends, and as such, takes place in Gotham. I enjoyed the individual stories and the art--except for the last one, which appeared to have been written (and drawn) for kids; it had no point and came to no real conclusion. The overall story arc doesn't wrap up either, but at least (most of) the stories came to reasonable pauses that you would expect to continue in later volumes. It's not a standalone so I would only recommend this to hardcore Batman fans, Gotham lovers, or people who plan on reading the entirety of the Knight Terrors/Insomia arc.

3.25 stars. Really liked the Catwoman and Nightwing ones. The Gordon/Detective Comics one had stellar art. Robins' was fine. Batman's was the least interesting as his trauma is so throughly examed that I don't think there's anything left you can do that doesn't feel cliche.

It amuses me that Barbara kept being a major character without getting her own story, same with Cass and Steph more minorly. Wish I would have gotten to see their nightmare stories

Not perfect.

It had potential to be decent. Some stories were great. It had a chance to explore some characters trauma or deepest fears, but it hardly focused on that. That would have been compelling. Overall, the execution was just not there. It sucks because it could have been something really good. The art was good to gorgeous in some places. I hope this was a learning experience for DC.

Batman #1 - 3*. Good art.
#2 - Loved that. The scene of Batman in the alley talking to his child self was brilliant. 4* Additional Arsenal comic - Bit of a nothing comic, we learn the fears of Arsenal and Black Canary. Art's meh. 2*

Robin #1 - Great cover. I think this is my favourite of the side stories so far. Tim and Jason each dealing with their fears and insecurities in dream form. Love the art. 4*
#2 - Tim and Jason come together to save themselves. I think this is my favourite side story so far. 5*

Catwoman #1 - 2.5* Not keen on the art. This must be dream Selina. She knows things others don't. And Batman is young and just starting out. I like Batman in this. #2 - Honestly, not a clue what's going on. Batman is still the best here 2*

Nightwing #1 - Poor Nightwing. This one was creepy. 4*
#2 - Nightwing and Scarecrow. What a combination. 4*

Detective Comics #1 - Jim Gordon. Realistic art style. Not really my favourite style. Didn't like the story either. Or really understand it. 2*

The nightmares of the Bat family made real...
(if only Insomnia wasn't such a lame arch villain)

Not a big fan of this being its own separate TPB. The Detective Comics tie-in has to be the best creepy nightmare out of this. That one feels very Clive Barker like. Sad that nothing else can compare.

This was a fascinating psychological horror-drama, especially as I caught shades of Gaiman's Sandman in Gordon's nightmare and 2 Stephen King Easter eggs side-by-side (one with a Kubrick shade to it) in Nightwing's nightmare. I can say I loved the art in a lot of places. But, a couple endings didn't quite feel like they landed right.
