No Place to Hide

Rate this book
The past came back to haunt them. Now, there’s no place to hide.

A terrifying dream is just the beginning of Jenny’s nightmare. Echoes of the past creep into Jenny and Shaun’s relationship, sending it into a tailspin. Meanwhile, a psychopath weaves his web with mysterious gifts. Susan tries to warn Jenny. But there is only so much you can do from the grave.

Out of desperation, Shaun declares he will stare down the devil if that is what it takes to save Jenny from her nightmare, not realizing that is exactly what he’d have to do.

No Place to Hide is a gripping tale of love tested by darkness. Can Jenny and Shaun withstand the sinister forces that seek to tear them apart? Or will the shadows of Cook’s Cove claim not just their love but their very lives?
Please note that this book contains topics that may be uncomfortable for some. There are references to stalking, sexual assault, and alcoholism.

This is book two of a duet. Both can be read as standalone stories; however, reading them in order gives you more background on some of the characters. In book one The House at the Cove, you meet Jenny and Shaun as Jenny tries to solve the mystery of who killed her aunt.

Who doesn’t love a good story? Judy Leslie's story starts in the vibrant city of Pasadena, California, where she grew up in a family as unique as they come. Her mother, a farm girl drawn to the allure of Hollywood, and her father, a charismatic Texan with talents in dance, art, and photography, provided a childhood filled with diverse influences. Her extended family was no less interesting, featuring a successful aunt who broke barriers as a gay interior designer and an uncle who worked as a chauffeur for Hollywood stars, among others. This colorful family backdrop offered Judy endless material for her future stories.

By the age of 20, Judy had moved to Bellingham, Washington, a cozy coastal town that seemed to whisper stories from its every nook. Running Yesteryear Antiques, her days began with the crackle of logs in the woodstove and the brewing of morning coffee, a routine that grounded her in simplicity and sparked her creative mind.

Her next chapter unfolded in a quaint beach cottage on the Lummi Indian reservation. This tranquil spot, where night mysteries seemed to merge with the ocean's rhythm, inspired the Cook’s Cove collection. Here, Judy's real-life experiences blended with her imagination, creating tales where mystery and romance seamlessly intertwined.

Judy's life also included dating a successful musician and living abroad, adding layers to her personal narrative. She has traveled extensively across the United States, exploring numerous small towns while riding on the back of her husband's Harley motorcycle.

Now, Judy splits her time between a home near Seattle and a cabin in Leavenworth, Washington, a place buzzing with Bavarian charm and outdoor activities. This contrast of settings continues to fuel her writing, inspiring her to explore stories about a family's search not for adventure or riches, but for a deep, enduring love – as timeless and profound as the mountains that surround her mountain retreat.

This was such a great story. The author is very talented and creates a story that just sucks you in. The characters are fantastic. Some are good and some will make you despise them. The world building was exceptional and once I started I couldn't put it down.
After Jenny learned the truth about Susan she thought she may be able to find some happiness. As she and Shaun started to build their relationship, strange things started happening. Jenny was having strange dreams and someone was leaving her gifts. At first she thought it was Shaun but she soon learned that was not the case. As things started to unravel, Jenny ran into Robert unexpectedly. He turned on his charm and set a sequence of events in motion that would cause Shaun to be charged with murder. Now they must sift through a tangled web of lies to find the truth.
A story full of twists & turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait to read more from this brilliant author.

Wow. Another excellent read from this author. This is my new favorite cozy mystery series. I was hooked from start to finish. So glade Robert got what he deserved for doing what he did to Jenny. I loved how Shaun was there for her and took care of her. I absolutely loved the ending and can't wait to see what happens next in the series. Highly recommend reading this.

Wow, what a story. This story is so well written. It is impossible to put down as the characters pull you into the story with them. Jenny and Shaun make you feel every emotion as their lives are changed forever by the actions of one man. I can't wait to read more books by Judy Leslie, especially ones in Cook's Cove.

Wow, i mean where to start.

This book kept a consistent air of mystery going on that made it somewhat difficult at times to anticipate what may occur and that was such a great twist that helped make it so enjoyable.

Jenny is such a great woman who had been crapped on one time too many but yet she still has such a fire within that has helped her begin anew, trusting another man, taking over her mums home and shop and making it her own. Selling custom furniture was a fun business venture for her and I'm sure she could do so much more with that.

Shaun a man with his own haunted past has a fear of commitment after the loss of his wife and child and begins to draw the conclusion that perhaps his wife was not the soul mate he was intended to have but it was in fact Jenny who was to be his.

Such an honest story with emotions flying shaun and jenny pull through together and make it in the end after so much drama and uncertainty.

Wow - Book 3 in the Cook’s Cove Mystery Series more than lived up to my expectations!

So much happened in the lives of Jenny & Shaun, the main characters, that I could hardly put the book down. I was on the edge of my seat throughout, and really enjoyed the Myths & Legends of Ireland, and of the Native Americans, that were very much a part of the story. I felt a lot of empathy towards Jenny & Shaun, and cried when bad, and happy things happened to them. The story arcs through Books 1-3, so if you haven’t already read the earlier books, I would suggest you will get more enjoyment from this book if you do.

I very much enjoyed this author's work. This is the 3rd book in the series, and though it qualifies as a stand-alone, I would read #1 and #2 first. I enjoyed the writing so much, that I'm going back to catch up. Shaun and Jenny are on a remarkable journey - a love story, sprinkled heavily with suspense. My kind of book! Truly a page-turner, I look forward to reading more by this author. Note: the warning of assault and anxiety was appreciated but I found the story focuses more on dealing with the issues and recovery.

Welcome back to Cooks Cove! One year after the death of her aunt Susan, who turned out to be her birth mother, Jenny is settling into her new life. Her revamped shop offering beach-themed furniture and decorations is thriving, and so is her relationship with hunky Irishman Shaun, or so she thinks. But Shaun is struggling with the demons of his past. As much as he loved being with Jenny, he isn't sure he can ever completely give his heart to another woman, not after the death of his wife and child. So, he begins to pull away. Little do either of them know that Jenny is in grave danger. A stalker has his eyes on Jenny, and when he brutally attacks her, Shaun is the one to save her and whisk her away to Ireland to heal. Back in the U.S., though, it turns out the stalker has wound up dead, and Shaun is the number one suspect. Did he kill for the women he loves? Can they find their happily ever after? Protected by the spirits of her mother and father, Jenny knows, though, that she will always have a home at Cooks Cove no matter what.

I loved diving back into the world of Cooks Cove, Washington. Seeing Jenny's and Shaun's relationship grow and bloom in book two was like watching two old friends fall in love. The hint of paranormal makes the book exciting and enticing, although I wish we would have seen a little more of Susan in book two. This mystery is a quick and easy read, perfect for those who want a bit of romance with their murder mystery. Trigger warnings to be aware of, though, this book does mention rape, sexual assault, and thoughts of harming ones-self. However, Judy did a fantastic job of handling these issues with discretion and grace. Showing that even when someone undergoes terrible pain, there is light at the end of the tunnel and that strength can be found to overcome things we never thought possible.

Disclaimer: While I received a complimentary copy of this book, the above thoughts and opinions are solely my own.

In the previous book, Jenny and Shaun met during a difficult period when Jenny faced danger, discovered secrets and mourned the death of her beloved aunt. This book is about the development of their relationship. Although they have been together for some time, there are still hurdles, especially in the form of Shaun's hesitations and later Jenny's trauma, and their relationship is tested by a lawsuit.

To be honest, I was a bit disappointed with the book. In terms of writing style, I didn't find the first half very catchy, it seemed too undeveloped / unfinished to me, developments that seem to come out of nowhere and are not further explained. In the second half this got better and I was more drawn into the story.

In addition, I was a bit disappointed in the content. In the characters of Shaun and Jenny, but also in the development of the story. I expected there to be some more clarity about the intrigues that emerged in the first story, but on the contrary, the intrigue is only added to.

This story is really mainly about the relationship between Shaun and Jenny, a shocking event, sadness, supernaturalism and a happy ending

While still an entertaining story, it didn't meet my expectations

More mystical than book #1 and I love orcas!
If you read this book and/or have read the last one, you will understand my statement about orcas. Can a particular orca be more than a water-bound mammal? In this book Jenny Carrington has made the adjustment to Cook’s Cove from San Francisco. She now successfully runs Susan’s home and shop as her own. With all the new housing development going on, she is doing well selling refurbished furniture to new households going up almost daily it seems. She and Shawn have gotten much closer too but is she expecting more of this relationship than he is? What happens when her former fiancé shows up along with the man who killed his brother, her father? Lots will be revealed, wounds will be caused but comfort will be found. Having read the first book, this second one was a page-turner which I could not put down. I had to find out how the author was going to untangle some events. I love Salty the dog, Aoife who is Shawn’s Irish aunt and Tess who was there for Susan and is now there for Jenny. So much to love about this book. If you like a little mysticism in your small-town romance, you really must read this book! I volunteered to review an ARC of it through BookSirens.

Jenny is trying to heal from (Susan's) her mother's death/murder. Jenny has a lot of info to process. All the lies she lived and now the truths she's recently learned!! Plus , ex Robert keeps emailing her. He can't let go.

Shaun is healing from old wounds, and the tragic loss of a wife and child. These two try to outrun their pasts, but it is not to be!! Robert creeps back to reclaim what is his. Jenny just frustrated the life out of me. She acts so simple at times like a vulnerable injured bird , when she's actually very self reliant!! Robert does his very best to throw a spanner into the mix. The fall-out is felt by many. Can there be an hea when things are looking so bleak?? I was nashing and grinding my teeth the first half of the book, and I was cursing like a sailor at the injustice of it all the last half of the book. Twists and turns that are gutwrenching. This author tears your heart out and stomps on it, but she offers a dim ray of light on the far horizon at the end. Well crafted!! I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.

Thank you Judy Leslie and BookSirens for getting to read No Place To Hide (book #2 of Cook’s Cove series). I really enjoyed book 1 and couldn’t wait to continue discovering more about Jenny’s family history/drama and seeing how her relationship evolved with the kind Irishman Shaun.

I was not disappointed in all the highs and lows the couple faced; from an ex-boyfriend reappearing, mistrustful relationships professionally and personally, family drama, the nuances of dating post-loss and addiction in a murder trial to the mix! Jenny and Shaun both have to work through their own personal dramas as they navigate their new and budding relationship, but in the end it’s triumphant to see how they overcome so much individually and together.

Looking forward to checking out the next book at Cook’s Cove, diving into the story of Vicki, Jenny’s friend, and the haunting she faces.

I love the overarching themes of potential threats lurking throughout while still keeping the book light and cozy. Very well done!

Another great read in the Cooks Cove series. Judy Leslie delves deeper into the characters Jenny and Shaun. There journey to build a life together comes with bumps in the road, some a whole lot more rocky than others.

Judy development of the various characters continues to strengthen each of them while giving them their own entity. I could help but feel for both Jenny and Shaun as there deal with trauma that is deep within them and work through their traumas together.

I cannot wait to see what Judy Leslie has in store for Cook’s Cove as more characters are being developed.

Shane and Jenny’s relationship is getting rocky as Shane is feeling guilty about being with her. Along comes Robert who is now working for Jack Taft and Jenny also finds out that Shane is working for him too. Robert is not as nice as people think and his darker side comes out in this story. The story does get very dark and you have to keep flipping the pages to see how the author is going to fix things. I loved the ending and how the author has kept up the theme of the Orca having Jenny’s father’s spirit. A suspenseful read.

I am loving this series!! This author killed it again with this book. If you like a story with heart, love, heartbreak, suspense and a fantastic ending this book is for you. Once again I love Jenny and Shaun, such a fantastic couple. Their journey in this story was full of heartbreak and suspense. I love folklore and I loved how the author incorporated it into this story. I did not see the ending coming at all. Definitely a surprise and a good one at that. I definitely recommend this book but start with the first one first. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. So excited!!

This one was very haunting and spiritual. Can you believe in the spirit of Susan and the orca possibly being Ryan? This one was more unsettleling than the first book but still gripped my thoughts and interests. The HEA was worked for harder than I’ve ever read before. Shaun and Jenny kept finding each other thru all the pain and trauma.

Loved the characters and the settings in which we find them in. I felt the ups and downs and the good and the bad with Jenny and Shaun. I look forward to reading the next book about Cook’s Cove!

Suspenseful and heartwarming

Jenny and Shaun, characters, continue from book 1 with ups and downs trauma and joy.
A thread of Susan, the original owner of Jenny's house, permeates every chapter. Evil. shows it's ugly face and contributes much of the suspense in this tale. Loved the book.

Very Good

I enjoyed this story of Jenny and Shown in Cook's Cove. My only complaint is that these main characters did a couple of really stupid things. These mistakes took away the believability for this reader.

Thank you to Book Sirens for the ARC of The Shadows That Follow by Judy Leslie, the 3rd in the Cook’s Cove Mystery series. While this can be read as a stand-alone, I would recommend that you read the first two books to get a better understanding of the characters backgrounds.

Wow, I thought the first 2 books were awesome, but this blew awesome out of the water. It tells the story of two people who are meant to be together, and because of their histories, how easy it is to get off track. Will they listen to their intuition telling them they are made for each other or will they listen to the spirits trying to pull them apart. I especially enjoyed learning about the Native American and Irish cultures and how they were woven into the storyline. Excellent writing and I can’t wait to see what else Judy has to offer in the future.

Book Sirens gave me the opportunity to read the ARC of The Shadows Left Behind by Judy Leslie, the third book in a series called Cook’s Cove mystery, in return for an honest review.

As the first two books in the series, this story takes place in a little town called Cook’s Cove. I would recommend reading the other books before you start this one. They give a lot of background information that, although not really necessary, will give you a deeper understanding of what went on before and why things happen as they do and people act as they do. I’m sorry I’m being vague, but I don’t want to spoil anything.

Like the first two books, I gave this a well-deserved four stars.
