Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest lies the haunted Unser Estate. A group of individuals with “the gift” assemble to find out what lurks inside the mansion.
At first, Steven and Roy are hesitant to work with unfamiliar people, but with their good friend Eliza, all three become committed to helping the others determine why the Unser mansion is poisoning the nearby town.
A simple team effort to rid the estate of hauntings soon turns into a nightmare as the group suffers attacks by strange, evil forces more sinister than mere ghosts. Dark and mysterious threats await them as they explore the mansion and determine exactly what James Unser was up to – a plan so evil, it threatens to destroy them all.

I won this book in a Goodreads give away. Roy and Steven are corralled by their friend Eliza to help out with others gifted people at the Usher Manor.. Roy and Steven are not sure about working with unfamiliar people but agree to help. The plan is to get rid of the evil spirit that haunts the Usher Mansion. Jonathan, one of the gifted ones, must find out the secret behind the haunted mansion. Perceval who is the real estate agent who is in charge of the property is one that you can not trust. He supplies the transportation to mansion and promises to explain everything after dinner. One of the former owners of the mansion has built some type of contraption that will rob the gifted ones of their powers. As the days go by, the gifted ones become weaker. Eliza, Roy and Steven try to leave the town but when they get about two miles out of town they get deadly sick. Then they return and they are better. The group knows that they must find this machine or loose their powers. Eliza, Roy and Steven do not trust the others and set out on a journey to find the machine. The trio discovers a library which has the history of all the gifted ones who have lost their power to this machine. In attempt to find this contraption, the trio finds secret rooms, tunnels and passage ways that takes them to unknown parts of the manor. One tunnel that they finds, leads them to Eximere. This is the most peaceful place the trio has ever seen. There is one obstacle in their way and that is the evil spirit of Anita. This is one of the best books in The River series that I have read. This is a fast pace story that I could not put down. I would highly recommend this book.
In this forth installment of Michael Richan's River series, we join Father and Son duo (Roy and Steven) on a very different type of journey. Brought into it by their mutual friend, Eliza, they are to join up with some other individuals in helping determine what type of evil resides at the Unser Estate, and what they can do to help defeat it.
What they find there is something that none of them have ever encountered before.
This was a very fast moving story with many twists and turns that compelled my attention at all times. I hated to put this book aside for a minute; I was so sucked into the drama unfolding!
Another thing I've noticed with this latest installment, is that Richan is bringing more and more personality and background to his characters, to the extent that returning to one of the River books is a very "comforting" experience. Although each book can be taken on it's own as an individual story, it's fun to watch the dynamics play out among characters that we've already "met" or have heard about in other volumes.
Eximere is now tied in this series for my favorite novel; The Haunting in Oregon being my other first choice. If you haven't read anything by Michael Richan yet, I recommend that you give this author a try!
Roy and his son Steven are corralled by Eliza to add to the team of gifted persons Jonathon needs to find out the secrets behind the haunted Usher Estate. The team members are introduced to each other as they gather in the van Perceval, the agent in charge of the property, has procured, to transport them to the Mansion. He promises a compete explanation of history and their mission after dinner. He claims to have tried, unsuccessfully, everything he can including burning down and bulldozing the property in order to save the dying town.
After the dinner, the team “enters the river”, the tool they use to see in to the paranormal world, all going into a deep trance, except, for Steven. There is much more to Usher Mansion than anyone of them could have imagined, and it will cost some of them their lives, and one his soul. It did not take long for them to realize it was a trap. Hidden on the property is a device that will drain every ounce of the team’s combined powers. Trying to escape by day causes them severe illness, escapes attempted by night are impossible because of the Marchers (demonic guards) will rip their captures to shreds. No one can be trusted, and no one is safe. Roy, Steven and Eliza secretly team up knowing the only choice is to find the machine and destroy it. The attempts to finds this device takes them in to secret rooms and passages, confrontations with Anita, the powerful matron ghost, and the skeleton of her son who holds the tools needed they need to end the terror. A discovery is made of a library filled with written history of the gifted ones already lost to the machine. Finally, a tunnel is found that leads them to Eximere, the most peaceful place Eliza, Roy and Steven have ever seen. To get there, they must cross a series of graves that are covered with a mysterious substance blocking any communication with those who may be of help.
To survive, the team must learn who betrayed them, find the device, reverse then destroy it, defeat the vicious Anita, and lastly, find a way past the Marchers. Only then can they obtain Eximere. Find out who lives, who dies and who joins Roy and Steven in paradise, in Eximere.
I was lucky enough to win a copy of Eximere in a Goodreads giveaway. I had not read the previous books in the series and had no idea what I would be getting into. You never know when you win something just how valuable it may or may not be. In this case I consider myself very lucky to discover this author and his books. I enjoyed reading Eximere immensely. I had no problem immersing myself in the story and could not put the book down.
Roy and Steven, father and son, have a gift passed down through generations in their family. The ability to step into ‘the river’ and see what normal eyes cannot. They receive an invitation to use their gift, along with others, in an attempt to solve the mystery of the Unser mansion. The Unser estate is vast and the mansion reportedly haunted. The real estate agent overseeing the property believes it to be causing the decline of the town and something needs to be done before it is too late.
As the group begins to explore the mystery of the mansion the plot twists and they find themselves in a dangerous situation. Now they must save themselves. The history of the house and those who have lived there is their only lead and time is running short. Something evil lives there and they must get rid of it. I will be looking for more books from Michael Richan because I am sure they will be equally enjoyable.
I received a copy of this from Librarything in exchange for an honest review.
This was an amazing novel. I started it last night and could not put it down until I finished it this morning. Simple language and fast paced. I was drawn in from the first page. It is the fourth book in Richan's The River series, but is written in a way that one can still understand it even without a knowledge of the other books. It gave me chills to read such an excellent story. It is very plot-based and dialogue-focused. Pretty quick to get through and definitely worth it. I would love to go back and read the first three books.
Steven and Roy have the gift of Sight that is called Entering the River. Eliza also has the Gift and has asked for their help in solving a matter concerning the ominous Unser House. The problem, however, seems to be that they were duped into this place so that some device that was created to steal these abilities from Special people like this group. Will they be able to save their special abilities or will they get drained like the Gifted of the past? Very unique take on the Gifted motif as well as hauntings. Great series!!
This was a very interesting read. The series keeps you coming back for more always wondering what new skills and powers each character will find. Intriguing new twists in a genre where it’s hard to be original and new. I’ll keep reading and being a fan for sure.
Very much enjoyed this addition to the series! It was a real page turner for me. I liked the storyline and found the characters interesting. This is a great series and I'm looking forward to starting the next book!
*Received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads*
If all of these books are written like this, then I am interested in reading them ALL. Very vivid, and descriptive, detail. I felt like I was watching a movie, or tv show. The story line grabbed me, immediately. Everything flowed so well. However, if you are not into this type of genre, I would not recommend it. This is the first of Michael Richan's books I have read. I liked it so much I actually went on Michael's author page, on Amazon. On there, I learned the suggested reading order of each book. For some reason, I did not need it. Eximere was a very nice read.
I just love this series! I got the first book for free and realized I could read the rest for free with Kindle Unlimited. So glad I have that option with Amazon. Anyway, this book brings Eliza back from the previous book as she asks for Roy's and Steven's help. Things weren't what they expected and it almost cost them their gifts. But they end up saving the day and even get to speak with Roy's great great grandfather. They also mess with a crazy ghost and some scary "Marchers" that will skin you alive if they catch you. Really kept my attention and wanted to just keep reading all night to see what would happen next.
This is book #4, but I didn't read the first three and this doesn't read as a series, but as a stand-alone story. I didn't find it scary, but it was suspenseful. Only a few editing problems which didn't distract at all. It's well written with real characters and a plot that works out very well. I enjoyed reading it and recommend it for those who like stories about "haunts" that keep you guessing. I received this book in a GR giveaway in hopes of a review.
Once again we visit with Roy, Steven and Eliza in another great installment. The imagery was amazing. I could see it all in my mind. I think this particular one seemed like an allegory for the horrible things people do when they're prejudice. Not to say this is the exact same thing. Though I think it's stories like this that can help open a dialog to discuss the more serious issues we face out in the world.
Won this book off of a website and was very pleasantly surprised. It was a very good story that was easy to understand, even without reading the book/books before this one. Loved this book and definitely plan to read others by this author!
