Dearest #3

Kissing Madeline

Rate this book

What’s the worst thing about wanting a sexy NFL football player? Everyone else wants him, too.

 After catching my boyfriend getting deep-throated by a cage girl, I’ve learned my lesson – never date a professional athlete. Never. Besides, I have more important things to worry about, like not blowing my shot to make it as a broadcast reporter. I won’t let anything get in my way, not even the new “it boy” of the NFL and my hot-as-hell neighbor.

What's the worst thing about getting death glares from his new neighbor? It doesn't make him want her any less.

I’ve worked my ass off to make it to the pros. The last thing I need is the complication of a relationship, especially since my last one was a total train wreck. But I can’t stop thinking about the feisty girl next door with the smart mouth. And I’d love nothing more than to show her what to do with that mouth.

Friends with benefits might be the best idea he’s ever had. Or the worst.

Kissing Madeline is a companion novel to DEAREST CLEMENTINE and FINDING DANDELION. Each book is a stand-alone.

Title: Kissing Madeline
Series: Dearest #3, Can be read as a standalone
Author: Lex Martin
Release Date: 27 April, 2015
Rating: 4.25 - 4.5 stars
Cliffhanger:. No
HEA:

Lex Martin once again charmed me and gave me a little piece of heaven. Her books are really good and with every new release she manages to completely bewitch me. Her stories are exactly what I need in my life – a mixture of fun, sex and love!

So even though some time has passed since I finished reading Kissing Madeline, I am still swooning. In fact, the same second I start to think about this heart fluttering, intense and incredibly romantic story I am getting dizzy all over again. It’s just one of those books that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside – a novel that makes a reader smile and smile. It’s just so lighthearted and adorable you cannot help yourself. Kissing Madeline is superb!

Do you like reading about sexy, NFL players? Do you like steamy, panty melting scenes that involve said NFL player? Yep, I am sure you do. And that’s why you will want to read Kissing Madeline!

Daren, the main hero is not only a quarter back in NFL, he’s also sex on stick and a really nice guy! He may have made few mistakes in the past, but now he really is decent, loveable character. If you have read Dearest Clementine, you probably already know that he cheated on his ex-girlfriend. Years has passed since that and he realized how terrible he acted and he is sure he’ll never make the same mistake.

He’s met Maddie some time before his NFL draft and was smitten with her. He liked her good looks, feisty personality and the sexy vibe she had going on. So when Madeline accidentally becomes his neighbor and the reporter that interviews him for TV, he wants to get her naked and in his bed.

They share instant connection, full of fireworks attraction and simply are made for each other.

Kissing Madeline is full of sweet, touching moments. With great romance and complex, likeable characters, used here ‘friends with benefits’ theme seemed to be more surprising and not so annoying.

I liked the attraction and lust between the main characters. It was exactly the right amount of sexy without it being all about sex. The dynamics between Madeline and Daren was just AMAZING. I laughed a lot reading about their shenanigans, and their banter was so sweet and funny. Maddie really could be feisty firecracker.

Why not five stars then? Hmm… I just loved ‘Dearest Clementine’, first book in the series the best. Despite Maddie and Daren being awesome, characters from first novel were absolutely mind consuming. And I couldn’t help but compare them. Yet, I assure you that getting lost inside Daren and Maddie’s book is worth the effort.

If you like sweet, spicy and heart racing new adult stories this is a must read for you. I highly recommend it!

Lex Martin manages to bridge the gap between New Adult and Contemporary in a way I find appealing and effortless. I've enjoyed every book in the series so far and Kissing Madeline is the winning hat trick of her trio of Dearest novels.

Daren and Madeline are characters that have been introduced in Dearest Clementine and although their roles were minor, the impact was greater. It's a great welcome to see them return but it's in KM that we really see them come into their own.
“I hate you,” she says under her breath.
“It’ll pass. Then you’ll love me. I promise.”
She turns and glares. “You shouldn’t make promises you can’t keep.”
I grin and motion toward her. “You need to be careful. I always keep my promises.”

From the little known about Daren previously, I knew enough to know he'd have to work his little socks off to change my opinion of him and I was curious to see how Lex would do that. Turns out I needn't have worried as she achieves it by page 2.

Neither Daren or Maddie are strangers to sacrifice and discipline, in their careers they strive to be at the top of their game. Their respective love lives however are in the relegation zone. Walking in on her MMA fighter boyfriend and the cage girl sees Maddie swear off athletes and focus on her career as an on air reporter. Something Daren is also doing, his near miss with his trifling hoe of an ex girlfriend means he's not interested in pursuing anything that will distract him from making his mark in the NFL. Until their careers collide.

 photo 503D505F-E9CB-4257-AA67-26A388EA66EC_zpsabj8u7qs.jpg

Filling in on a sports segment means Maddie gets a whole lot closer to quarter back Daren than she ever wanted too. The onscreen chemistry is undeniable and eventually spills over to their personal lives. Due to the nature of her job and the fear of any conflict of interest they agree to keep it casual and out of the public eye.

 photo DE604556-3C2A-4D89-96B4-59C3D374B3D6_zps64m2twd0.jpg

I didn't get the same sense of intensity from their personal stories as I did from the characters in the previous books but it certainly made up for it in its suspense and steam.

With a winning touchdown of epilogues it's the perfect end to a wonderful series. KM was one of my most anticipated reads of 2015 and Lex Martin certainly delivered for me on that front.

..I close my eyes and rest my head on her chest, never more content with my life. And for the first time ever, it has nothing to do with football.

"I hate you".
"It'll pass. Then you'll love me, I promise."
"You shouldn't make promises you can't keep."
"You need to be careful. I always keep my promises."

Darn, this book was hot. I mean really hot. Super-duper hot.

Daren and Maddie decided that the friends-with-benefits situation worked for them, since they were busy with their jobs but they loved spending some quality time together, off the radar. Besides, with Maggie's job as a reporter who has to interview Daren weekly about his career on football, an affair between them would jeopardize Maggie's future and she isn't willing to let anything get in her way, not even the sexy athlete who lives next door. This should be easy, shouldn't it? Something casual, no strings attached, no dates and no emotions. But when they fail in the no emotions part, thay realize they may have to sacrifice everything they have worked for, everything they have wanted for what they want most. A future together.
“It's a sick disease, this thing with Daren. He infiltrares my every thought, dances through my dreams at night, and fills my head with flights of fancy. Because when I allow myself to think about my future, I want one with him so badly my heart hurts with longing.”

Although Dearest Clementine is my favorite book in this trilogy (that's why Kissing Madeline is a 4,5 stars), I really loved Maddie and Daren's story. Lex Martin describes her books as “the sexy kind with lotsa angst, a whole lotta kissing, and the hot happily ever afters” , which applies perfectly to this one! I loved how their relationship evolved from booty calls to you-are-the-love-of-my-life, how they opened up their hearts to each other and wanted desperately their relationship to last. Maddie is a very strong and independent heroine, focused and driven by passion and I enjoyed her POV but oh my God exploring what was inside Daren's head was fan-fuckin-tastic! I didn't expect to like him so much! After all, he cheated on Clem and broke her heart. And yeah his mind is as dirty as my laundry, but there is so much more in him! He is a loyal friend and a loyal boyfriend, the type that sends you flowers and plans romantic dates and can't get you out of his head, he's adorable! And ehem, very hot.

Kissing Madeline was the perfect conclusion to a perfect series, and while I finished the entire trilogy in one weekend, I can't tell how thankful I am for our little infinity! <3

PS I also got rid of my web camera, you can't be too careful with these things.

Special Note: Several of you have asked about Harper and why she isn't prominent after Dearest Clementine. Thanks for loving her! Here's the thing... I want each book to read as a standalone, and I worry that too many characters from previous books make it difficult for new readers. That being said, I am definitely considering writing a book just for Harper. I love her too, so please don't feel like I've just disregarded her. I'll let you know more about this soon!

Thanks for reading my books, guys! xoxo

5 Kissing Daren Stars

Kissing Madeline is a standalone in the Dearest series. Each book in the series are standalones.

Daren is Clementine’s ex-boyfriend. Clementine is the main heroine in book one of the Dearest series. Daren was just drafted into the NFL, he’s a newbie and he doesn’t get much play time, but he’s still a very popular athlete. He’s recently single and ready to mingle. He has no intentions in settling with any girl.

Madeline landed her dream job. She’s a TV reporter for her local station. She wants to cover breaking news, something worth of substance. But her boss has other ideas. He wants Madeline to cover sports.

I love that the timeframe in Kissing Madeline is set after college. Each book in the series kind of progresses since Clementine’s book is during college. I loved Madeline. I love how confident and career driven she was. I also love her name, but I am biased because that’s my daughter’s name, but I digress. Madeline is no damsel in distress. She wants to make it as a reporter and is willing to work the hours to get it.

I’ll be honest. I was nervous reading about Daren. He wasn’t represented in the best of light in Clementine’s book, but I’m all about redemption. I’m also about reading the other side of the story. I loved getting to know Daren’s side. I didn’t realize all the problems he was dealing with in High School. I have to say, I do see him differently.

The banter and chemistry between Madeline and Daren is amazing! There is insta-attraction at first, but the book isn’t overly in your face steamy. It’s very tasteful. Madeline is a beautiful woman and Daren wants her. Madeline is all about her job and I love that Daren chases after her. I’m a sucker when the Hero goes after the Heroine. It’s completely adorable and cute.

Tell me later why we’re a bad idea. But tonight let me show you all the reasons we work

She’s more than just a beautiful girl with an awesome laugh. More than a sexy woman with a great personality. She’s just… more.

Madeline wants to be a serious reporter. She doesn’t want to interview Daren, because sports aren’t her field and it causes tension between Madeline and other co-workers at work. Daren also has ladies throwing themselves at him and Madeline has to deal with her cheating issues, which I completely understand. There are a lot of issues they have to deal with and it was delicious to read.

I wanted to be close to him. It was like I was addicted to him, to how safe he made me feel.

Overall, Kissing Madeline is a light steamy read. There was hardly any angst, but plenty of tension that kept me interested. What I enjoyed most was the character buildup. I really felt the connection between the two characters. I loved the sexual tension, the cute playful teasing and even the crazy issues they had to deal with.

If you are a fan of the series, you will not be disappointed.

☆ I received an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you and hugs&kisses for adding me in your acknowledgements!! I was very flattered and excited that I inspired one of your scene conversations in this book! Hehe. ☆

#YES!! Daren dumped that "slore"!! And NO ladies, put down your pitchforks, she DOES NOT appear in this book at all! *does a happy dance*

Waah, words cannot explain how much I love, loved this novel!

I know some of you are like, “why would I want to read a book about a guy who cheated?”… but, I’m sure like many, for those who have read bk1 Dearest Clementine, would understand my enthusiasm and curiosity over Daren as he had totally won favor back in DC. He did wrong, but ultimately, he is a sweet and upstanding guy.

His rapport with Madeline “Maddie” was so in synch and natural. They both exuded focus, tenacity, vulnerability, sexiness, and humor!!

KM wildcat

I spent a good amount of time in the book just smiling and gushing over them.

Love These Arms

Not to mention, the camaraderie of all of the characters that we see throughout. So yes, we do well and good get to see the involvement and updates of GavinXClem, JaxXDani, and RyanXJenna!! *squee!!!* LOVED seeing the "Out-Skank" texting between the gals!! Cracked me up!!

I was literally on cloud nine, I tell you!

Pretty please, Lex, write out Ryan and Jenna’s story as I just adore them!

And oh, write an additional novel with updates on all of our couples combined! That last chapter just keeled me over with sugary goodness! Haha

Third book in the Dearest series, Kissing Madeline reads like a mash-up of the two first books. There's the bland heroine, the duchy hero, a plot revolving around sex, a mystery that is no mystery at all, some casual sexism and slutshaming, but let's take it from the start.

Madeline, the heroine, walks in on her boyfriend sleeping with another woman. Madeline breaks it off and decides to focus (even more) on her job. When she moves in with Sheri, she is now the neighbor of Daren, a Heisman trophy winner. They've met before thanks to mutual friends. Sheri suggest Madeleine should go out with Daren.
“At least let me introduce you two before some slussy gets her hooks into him.”

Instead, Madeline (literally) runs into Daren during one of her work outs. With Madeline not wanting a relationship, she and Daren soon decide on a friends with benefits relationship, but maybe one of them, or both even, wants more.

This story is basically about Maddie and Daren hooking up while wanting more. There is no plot. Well, there is some stuff at Maddie's workplace, but it's so insignificant in the long run, and around 80% there is (again, like in the first book) a poor attempt at mystery. It doesn't help that both Maddie and Daren are such boring characters. He's somewhere in the middle between the previous two heroes in this series: a bit of a douche and casually sexist (Gavin), and all out sexist misogynist Jax. Daren falls right in the middle. His character had so much potential: he has a connection to Clem form the first book, in the fact that he cheated on her in high school, and for the past years have been dating a woman that has, by all means, treated him badly. Instead he's another in a long line of poorly developed new adult heroes. He says/thinks things like:
"I’m fine with needing to convince you that you like when I touch you."

He’s been bitchy all week, and I’ve been tempted to ask if he needs tampons.

And Maddie is definitely not a fuck-and-forget kind of girl.

You know, usual new adult hero bullshit.

This book had potential. It could've explored the sexism Maddie has to put up with at her job (it could've explored the way female journalists/tv-presenters are treated), Daren coming to terms with his past and the moral struggles, it could've explored the friends with benefits better. It could've done so much more, much better. Instead it remains in the land of typical new adult, filled with weak plots, sexism, unhealthy relationships and heroes, the virginal heroine and the negative look upon sexuality.

I debated about writing this review because I was a little biased against Darren going into it, but truly I was determined to try to see his side. Unfortunately this book didn’t change my mind, and I could have saved myself the time reading it if someone else had posted an honest review. So here it is and while there aren’t spoilers about the rest of the book, there are some from his point of view about cheating on Clem. While it is well written, I just don’t think the author handled Darrens relationship with Clementine well enough to turn him into a hero that deserves his own story. She tried to take a dirtbag who cheated on his girlfriend/best friend (who was also his other best friends twin sister) and make him a sweet caring guy who respects women and would never do that again... That fails to work in this story for several reasons. One is that if he were truly repentant and gave even a little bit of a crap about this person who had meant so much to him for his whole life, he wouldn’t have kept dating the girl (who was supposed to have been her best friend busy obviously wasn’t) for four years. It’s actually made me cringe when I read the line where he said he never even looked at another girl while with Veronica and that he loved her but partly a stayed with her because she had a crappy home life and needed him etc. He gave this viper all of the respect etc that he should have given the girl who he’d known his whole life. And since he stayed friend with her brother, his relationship with her ex best friend was rubbed in her face FOR YEARS. What’s worse is that Darren’s action were caused by failing to talk to his girlfriend/best friend to clarify things being told to him by a girl who was obviously into him combined with some mommy daddy issues. It kind of makes me dislike Jax more as well, because he may have held a grudge for a year but he then completely forgave the guy who broke his sisters heart while the guy was still dating the girl who he cheated with? She no longer had a best friend, she tried trusting her professor leading to her to be stalked and harassed . Their parents sucked so she truly had no one. It all left her feeling betrayed and alone. This all sent her down the road that fundamentally changed her as a person., while he kept staying the manipulative psycho who slept with her best friends boyfriend? How do you forgive someone of that? Yet somehow when he tells the story to Maddie, who was recently cheated on and betrayed by a famous boyfriend that she had grown up with (see the impossible similarities here?!?!) she listens and doesn’t judge or get upset... this is a girl who was afraid to date another athlete for fear of this kind of thing, but decides his betraying someone he knew for his entire life was ok because he found out that he might be adopted? If you are going to take the chance of writing the story of the cheater, you have to really nail it. Unfortunately this didn’t happen. This could have possible worked if he hadn’t stayed with Veronica so long, or maybe if had been 10 years later, but it’s just not believable that this guy is suddenly a hero having just finished college. And honestly, having read Clem’s story first, I couldn’t get her pain out of my head enough to even muster a grain of sympathy for him. I love an asshole main character I really do, but I can’t stand when authors write these characters who are presented as the perfect guy, so we should just whitewash over their mistakes. No, it doesn’t work that way. Cheating is a hard limit, and trying to pretend he had his reasons didn’t make it ok in this case.

Kissing Madeline…I’ve read the two previous books by Lex Martin and loved both of them. So when I had the opportunity to read this one, I jumped at it. I’ll be honest and say, from the blurb alone, I couldn’t recall either character name from the previous books. It wasn’t until I was a few chapters into this book that I realized that Daren was Clem’s ex and Madeline was the college reporter that interviewed Clem toward the end of her book. I’ll admit that I lost a little steam there. I wasn’t a huge fan of Daren (I hold grudges against fictional characters) and even though he stepped up and helped Clem and they made nice and it was all water under the bridge for them, I wasn’t sold on him. But…

…I quickly fell for him. There was so much more to him than just being a jock. And I loved how he loved Maddie. Even when they were just “friends with benefits”, he didn’t look at another girl. He was all about her. While I don’t condone cheating (and FYI: there wasn’t any in this book), it was nice to know his side of what happened with Clem. I fully expected his ex to show up and cause trouble but she didn’t.

I also really liked Maddie. She seemed so real and it was easy to feel for her. She was just coming out of a bad break up and my biggest complaint about that was the lack of confrontation with the guy and the chick he was caught cheating with. I wanted more from that! But…beyond that, I loved her story. I never felt like she was being stupid about her relationship with Daren. Yes, they kept the relationship quiet because she was afraid of losing her job by dating him, but she had good reason.

I loved them together. Every moment of them was just pure perfection. I loved their chemistry, I loved their banter and I loved their history. I loved finding out that they had met back in high school and that he asked her out. That was beyond sweet.

There was a little suspense/mystery/scandal element to the book (it was a long build with little hints that it was coming) and I totally called it. But when the scandal broke, I loved how Daren stood by Maddie.

As much as I liked the previous two books in this series, I have to say that this was hands down my favorite. I don’t know if the author plans to continue the series with more characters/friends but if not, there was a very nice ending showing where each couple is a few years down the road.

4.5 Stars!!

Even though this storyline wasn’t a new one, these characters helped it to be interesting. If you read Dearest Clementine you might go into this book really disliking Daren but I didn’t dislike him. Somehow reading the other books he really didn’t seem that bad and it is hard to hold something against someone when they were young and dumb when it happened. I’m not excusing his behavior but I am also not going to hold it over his head the rest of his life if he showed remorse and seemed to not be that person anymore…..then it was easy for me to give him another chance.

There are some nice twists/drama going on in this story that does make it more intriguing than the norm.

These two had awesome chemistry together and they were enjoyable solid characters that were mature in their thinking even though they both had insecurities (for good reason).

This entire series was good and has absolutely hooked me on Lex Martin!!

Daren, oh Daren! First there was Gavin with Clem. Next came Jax with Dani, and I really didn’t think anyone could top Jax. But Daren! I think you are the new number one! You had me swooning like crazy!

Daren is a sexy NFL star who lives, breathes, and sleeps football. It has been his entire life and the only thing that brought him peace.

Maddie is a smart, confident journalist who wants to make a difference. However, after filling in on a sports segment for a co-worker, the connection between her and Daren is undeniable, and soon she is agreeing to a friends with benefits deal with her sinfully sexy neighbor.

“And isn’t that what every girl wants? To make her guy so crazy with lust he can’t control himself?”

Umm…yes! That is what we want. And Maddie and Darren had it in spades. Their chemistry was so hot, I thought my Kindle might spontaneous combust.

“What do you want, baby?” I don’t think about it. I don’t have to. “Your cock. Fill me, Daren. Fuck me.”

But their connection was more than just physical. It was emotional and I loved their honesty with one another. Of course, like any relationship they had their ups and downs, which just made the story more real.

I loved how much of the rest of the crew we got to see in this story, especially in the epilogue. And the ‘out-skanking’ is still an all-time favorite of mine!

I simply adore Lex’s writing style. She has me laughing one minute, swooning the next, and making me change my panties soon after!

“Go flirt with a sexy man. Flirting is like chicken soup. Good for the soul.”

Pretty sound advice! I loved this story and can’t wait for more from Ms. Martin! ~ Tiffany, 5 stars

~~~
I got nothing done today. Not a single thing. You know why? Aside from the obvious -- I'm a book whore and proud, that is. Because of Lex Martin, Daren Sloan and this fucking book. Ugh! I'd like to say I regret it, but I so don't.
Madeline McDermott doesn't have time to date, and after the disastrous end to her last relationship, she's not about to make time. Not even for her sexy new neighbor. Nope, especially not for him.
It's a good thing, then, that Daren Sloan isn't looking for love. His own relationship also fell apart and he's concentrating on his dream -- being an NFL star.
It's too bad that Maddie and Daren have electric chemistry. That they can't stop thinking about each other. With both their careers on the line, friends with benefits seems like the perfect solution. Right?
Wrong.
Just...just read this book, okay? You won't regret it, because Daren, sweet baby Jesus in a basket, DAREN. I thought I loved Jax, from Ms. Martin's excellent Finding Dandelion, but now I'm not so sure...
Okay, I am sure. I love all the boys (and girls) in the Dearest series, but this book is definitively, unequivocally my favorite. I'd read it and read it and read it again. It was funny. It was moving. It was heart-breaking. It was mysterious. It was really, really sexy. It. Was. Awesome.
Ms. Martin has a gift for making her characters likable, despite their failures and flaws. Maddie was a workaholic and maybe a bit insecure at times, but so what? Still want to be her friend. Daren was a cocky, kind of clueless idiot on occasion, but who cares? I'd still sack him...
As the potential end of this series (there *may* be a future novella and/or spin-off for some great, minor characters), Kissing Madeline was just perfect. Because it had (among other things) an epilogue that left no doubt that reading this series, and falling for this group of friends, was every bit as rewarding as winning the Super Bowl...for a book whore like myself, that is. ~ Beth, 5 stars
Romance and football is a great combination! And Lex Martin's Dearest Series has been outstanding. Each of the three books has been a gem. I'm sad to see it end.
Daren and Maddie were a perfect combination. Both were very strong characters. Even their baggage of angst and hurt didn't override their growing relationship. I loved the fact that we watched their relationship take shape and face its own challenges rather than being bogged down in a heavy dose of the past.
Amazing from start to finish! Can't wait to see what this author will release next. She's an auto-buy for this reader.
“Everyone has baggage, Daren.”….It’s learning not to make the same mistakes that matters”
Lex Martin has done it again! I am giddy, happy and just so excited! Kissing Madeline was such a fantastic read. I have been waiting for Daren’s story for a long time. His character has grown so much since we first met him in Dearest Clementine.
Kissing Madeline is Maddie and Daren’s story. After Maddie catches her boyfriend in a compromising situation, she vows to never date another athlete again. Her career is now her primary focus. Sounds good, right? What she didn’t plan on was her new neighbor Daren…. Daren has worked hard to make it as a pro football player. He lives, breathes and exists for football. He doesn’t do relationships. That is until the girl next door gets under his skin. Now his thoughts are no longer consumed with football. He has Maddie on his mind all the time…… What starts out as just friends friends with benefits, quickly turns into something more. But, being in the spotlight isn’t easy. Will Daren and Maddie be able to handle the pressures of their jobs, but also being in a real relationship?
I loved everything about Kissing Madeline. As soon as I read the synopsis for this story, I knew it was going to be a good one, and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. This story starts off with one heck of a bang. I was hooked from that instant and had to read more. I was captivated and did not want to put this book down! I loved Daren and Maddie together. They shared such excellent chemistry and balanced one another perfectly. Maddie was just the woman that Daren needed. Someone who understood just how important his career was and didn’t crucify him over mistakes he made as a younger man. And Daren, he loved and supported Maddie, even when he was in denial about the way he felt. I was in awe of his strength and love, especially towards the end. Read it, you’ll understand!
Kissing Madeline was everything that I wanted and more. I laughed, I swooned, fell in love and even had some tears in my eyes. This story also had some great twists. I had a few ideas about who was behind the things that were going on and loved watching how it all played out! By the time, I got to the end of the story, I had the biggest smile on my face. This story had the best possible ending and wraps up the series as a whole in the best possible way. I know this book says that you can read it as a stand-alone, and you totally can. But, if you have the time, I would recommend that you read the first two books, just for maximum impact. I have been a huge fan of Lex Martin and the Dearest series, since I first read Dearest Clementine. I can not recommend this series enough. If you’ve been thinking about reading this series, this is one that should not be missed.
I try and push all my friends to read the first book in this series 'Dearest Clementine.' I can't say enough good things about it. It made me swoon, tear up, want to throw things at certain characters and it made me feel. It's THE definition (in my opinion) of a true college romance book. That being said, I had high hopes for 'Kissing Madeline'and it delivered!
If you read the first book, you met Maddie briefly when she interviewed Clementine towards the end and of course you know Daren as Clementine's ex boyfriend. Maddie and Daren generated a few sparks in one scene and I had wondered if they would get a book.
This one starts after college and takes place in Boston. Maddie is a news reporter for the local channel and Daren has just been drafted into the NFL. Maddie wants to be taken seriously and cover things that she cares about, however she has been roped into doing a sports series with Daren where he kind of gives the "ins and outs" of football for those who don't really understand it. She hates it and Daren can tell. It amuses him. On camera they generate so much chemistry and have great banter, the series even gets shown on ESPN.
Maddie and Daren live in the same building so they run into each other quite often. Daren kind of pursues Maddie and they eventually fall into the friends with benefits category. Let me just say, this book is a lot hotter than the previous two. The sex is really hot and these two sizzle together. Evenutally feelings start to get involved and things get confusing for both of them as they have to decide what to do about their situation.
I LOVED these two together. They were so sweet, sexy and really balanced each other out. Daren was kind of a goofball in the first book but he definitely has more to him in this one and you'll find out more about his background. Maddie is really serious but likes to have fun and cares deeply about the people in her life. My heart broke for something that happens towards the end to her, which also affected Daren. It was shocking to them at first but after awhile they stood by each other and it was them against the world. The epilogue was one of my favorites and I think everyone will love it. It was the perfect ending for all of the couples in this series.
This is the third in the series, but it stands alone and is complete in itself.
This is the friends with benefits that becomes more plot, but the lively banter and sizzling chemistry made this a better than usual example of that kind of story. She's an ambitious rookie broadcast reporter, he's an NFL sports star so they have to date in secret to avoid any appearance of partiality which was also a fresh touch. I wasn't so convinced about the drama; the breadcrumbs there were so huge I saw the drama coming up a mile off so I struggled to believe Madeline wouldn't have had her suspicions aroused either, but the rest of their story was so enjoyable, it didn't spoil it, just made me roll my eyes a little at her naivety.
That said, this was an engaging read with a well paced love story and hot smut. Definitely worth a read if that's your thing.
Wow, this was so good! I don't even know how I got from the first page to the very end of this book. This story was just amazingly fluid and I couldn't stop reading it. It might be because I read other L. Martin's book during the past week and got used to her writing style, but Kissing Madeline was a great read for me.
In my opinion, books in Dearest collection keep getting better and better. I liked Dearest Clementine, loved Finding Dandelion and adored Kissing Madeline. If these books keep improving like this, the next one might be too much for me. And it very well might be, since it's supposed to be about Jenna and Ryan, two characters I've loved since the first book.
I'm not going to give anything away, I just want to say that you can feel love in almost every word of this book.
I don't want to read about cheaters!!
Even if H doesn't cheat on h(I'm assuming) , he cheats on the amazing h of bk 1 of this series repeatedly with her best friend and broke her heart, she didn't get over it for years.
Its not fair that H end up this super successful sports star and then have his HEA too - where's the JUSTICE???!!!
Before I write this review. I am going to add a disclaimer. Some people know that I am good friends with Lex. I don’t want that to cloud anyone’s judgment on my love for this book. This whole damn series. Because right now, Lex Martin is not my friend. I am a reviewer. Of an author’s book. That I absolutely freaking loved. So let’s get to it.
I have to say that I have so much love for the Dearest series. And with each book. It just gets better and better. Hotter and hotter. And sexier and sexier. I’ve also stated in my past reviews on how Lex Martin knows how to write hot sexy men. And good god she does not fail with one, sexy as sin, NFL football player, Daren Sloane. He’s just come out of a nightmare of a relationship. And is not looking for anything new. Especially with his NFL career about to takeoff. That is until he meets his new neighbor, Madeline.
Madeline had witnessed probably one of the worst acts committed from her boyfriend. Which causes her to flee and not look back. She decides to move into her friend Sheri’s home. Decides to focus on her career as a reporter. And not to have any distractions. As in men. Until. She literally runs into her new neighbor, Daren. And pretty much all bets are off. Instant attraction. After hanging out one night, they decide to have a friends with benefits kinda deal. They have lots and lots of hot, dirty, up against a wall kinda sex. And stroking. There is stroking, guys. My favorite thing ever. But then feelings start to form. Lines are blurred. Doubts and jealousy take over. Not to mention Madeline could lose her job if anyone finds out that they are “seeing” each other. And also some pretty big scandals are brewing. Will these two be able to overcome all these fumbles?? You will have to read to find out! No spoilers here!!
During this series, I have come to watch Miss Martin’s writing just grow and grow and explode!! These books have the best ingredients when it comes to a perfect book. I love the transformation from college life. To real life. I love the tough independent females that are these characters. The fierceness, protective, sexy, and loyal men in this series. I’m also a sucker for any sports related type books. So this was an added bonus to the greatness!! Lex’s writing will suck you in and make you feel like you are part of the story. I cried at the ending. Such great closure for this series. It was beautifully done. I love Lex like the sister I never had. And I just have to say I am so very proud of you! And I can’t wait to see what you do next!!!!
Finishing this book felt like someone sliced open my chest and took out my guts and replaced it with the stuffing you find for stuffed animals and rainbows and heart emojis and chocolate and just made me feel all the warmth and fuzzies. IT WAS SO. GOOD.
Okay first of all, apologies in advance for skipping the first book to the third. The thing is, I spent the majority of the first book in this series, Dearest Clementine, disliking one of the main characters in this book: Daren. He cheated on Clementine during high school and although that situation resolves itself towards the end of Dearest Clementine, I still wasn't sold on his character. So I skipped the second to see how he would redeem himself.
And oh boy, did he redeem himself.
Geez, his interactions with Madeline are so spot-on, so sweet, so soothing that I kept clutching my chest because of emotion overload. I love how he presents a facade on the football field, but is pretty sensitive on the inside. I love seeing more of his character, and delving into what exactly occured during those years in high school when he and Clementine's relationship kinda dissolved. I came into the book unconvinced that I would like this dude, and I finished the book sighing in contentment.
Madeline was his perfect counterpart in so many ways. Their chemistry was literally leaping off the pages and she is just amazing. In the beginning of the book we see Maddie get cheated on with her boyfriend, so she gets some trust issues. Then she meets Daren and BAM they're just PERFECT for each other (and they knows it) and they get in a whole friends-with-benefit situation. But... we all know how those turn out, right? ;))
Once their relationship becomes something more, I could not get enough of this couple. And seeing the couples from the previous books just made my heart warm even more. I like how Martin also adds a bit of suspense (in this case, the mysterious hacker) in her books too. They're totally not the main focus, but also create some situations for the characters that make them realize what their feelings really are.
So readers of NA, I totally recommend you to pick up this series if you haven't already. The couples are so heartwarming to read about, and the individual characters are also so great by themselves. Love love love them all.
I absolutely adored the first two books, Lex Martin writing has magic. But Kissing Madeline, in my opinion, had one too many cliches for me to really LOVE.
ISSUES-
The Meeting:
I absolutely HATE it when the heroine crashes into the dude the first time they meet. I've read it happening so many times and while it may have been fun the first few times, its getting kind of old to be honest.
description
Fuck Buddies:
Fuck-buddies or Friends-with-benefits annoy the living hell out of me. Theres only two ways this can go: one party likes the other more then they should while the other person has no feeling whatsoever and just want sex, or the other person also like you back but no one tells anyone to keep the story line going. I just feel like its never going to go well.
description
Yeah right.
The Storyline:
While this wasn't really an issue per-say I just felt this book was very predictable if you just a little about it; this was one of my issues with all three of the books in this series.
BUTTTT....
With all that said, I'm still giving this book 3.5 Stars, because there were some things I actually very much did enjoy.
The Characters:
I very much enjoyed reading about both Derek and Madeline. I liked them and their personalities and they worked together. Definitely one of the high points of this book.
The Epilogue:
Seeing all the previous characters, (including Gavin who i LOVED!) a few years laters made me so happy. It was a great ending to not only this book but the whole series that I'll miss dearly, even with all the issues i had with this book.
I think this one was my favorite in the series! The epilogue was so perfect and I loved how it concluded the other couples stories too. I loved Getting a bit of Gavin and Clem and Jax and Dani!
I'm trying to figure out why I loved this one more than the others... considering the fact that I was not a big fan of Darren. Yes because he cheated on Clementine... I won't easily let that go BUT he did redeem himself I must say. he learnt from his mistake and I'm glad I got to see a side to him that I really really liked! He and Maddie were really great together.
The reason I really enjoted this book was the character development of Maddie and Daren. Maddie was completely focused on work. no time for guys, reserved, kept to herself but when her and Daren became friends it all changed.
They attempted this friends with benefit thing but they both knew from the beginning that it was pretty doomed. But the needed an excuse to see each other, yet not be in a 'relationship'. I really enjoyed the progression of the story.
It's sad having to say goodbye to these characters.I've had a lot of fun getting to know them and I'm sure I'll be rereading the series soon.
Is it even possible to love Lex’s books even more than I already did? YES, YES IT IS.
Kissing Madeline threw me into a windmill of feels. Lex Martin, you know the way to my heart. Since Clementine, then Dani, and finally Maddie, time and time again, you managed to care for every single character and their situations, their relationships and happenings. You are an amazing author and I’m so humbled to be able to call you a friend. Seriously, I’m so humbled for these swoony books and the gang. I will forever love this series like I love lemon pie.
The wait was so worth it. What even, Lex Martin. I loved that every single character had their own voice. I’m so happy I got to see some favorite people of mine in this book [cough] some old souls have some cool cameos in the book. You’ll be happy, guys. And Maddie and Daren. I never knew I could love this couple as much as I do right now. I feel so full of joy and full of every single happy emotion inside my body. They were such a great team. They were everything I wanted, everything I hoped for them to be – but really? THEY WERE SO MUCH MORE. Lex exceeded my expectations – she threw them, punched them, and put them out the door, and she wrote a magnificent, funny, swoony, loving book.
It had all of Lex’s things you need in a book: some Out-Skank, some more swooning, some more kisses over here, so many humor I actually died laughing, amazingly written characters, and that feeling you always get when you finish a Lex Martin book: that you always want to have more.
Kissing Madeline is perfect if you’re looking for a book that is cute and sexy both at the same time. That has great one-liners and two main characters that are just so madly in love with each other.
If Lex Martin tells you that Kissing Madeline would be her steamiest book, you better believe her!
Dearest Clementine and Finding Dandelion made me squeal like a retarded seal. But Kissing Madeline made me sweat buckets. I swear to everything that is holy, this book is so hot!
If you love sexy and sweet NFL players, Darren Sloan is the man for you. He's sooo swoon-worthy. He's very understanding and supportive when it comes to Maddie. Her cheating ex wouldn't measure up to him.
What I love about Maddie is that she's independent woman personified. She's feisty, driven and talented. She's really dedicated with her work.
Their banters made me chuckle at times, they're both good at it. The way they handled their conflicts *coughs* plot-twist *coughs* was very mature of them and very practical, I might add.
The novel was a sweet, sexy, fun read. I would really recommend Kissing Madeline and the previous books of the series to my friends (or anyone who would ask me for a highly-recommended book lol).
I love it. Really. 5 freaking stars.
Hey, Lex. I want more!!!
