This was a great historical read! Set during the time of the Byzantine Empire, the story of Lady Anna and Sir William unfolds amongst the historical turmoil within and outside the Palace walls.
This story was so well researched in terms of its historical accuracy and was very impressive. The characters, both main and background, we're complex, interesting and moved the story along very nicely.
A fabulous historical read.

This was really an outstanding book about Byzantium, its' people, customs and intrigues. It was definitely a page turner, and with the exception of a few hours of sleep, the book was finished in under 18 hours. The pomp and glamour of the Imperial Court was matched only by the scheming of the courtiers - all the way to the top. This made the book fascinating,. Everyone had their own agenda and had ever changing alliances depending on who was in favor with whom. In amongst all this scheming is the main story arc - two people who find each other at a slave market. One is a captured Frankish knight, badly beaten and up and for sale. The other is the handmaiden to a princess, who sees a resemblance to an old friend, long dead, and also the handsomest man she's ever seen. With him on the slave block are two little girls that he is protecting - one an infant, the other just two years old. Her heart melts toward him, so she buys all three - the knight and the two girls. She takes them back to the palace to clean, clothe, and feed them. She must also see to the knights wounds, which are many. They introduce each other. She is Lady Anna. He is Sir William Bradfer. Now that Sir William knows that the girls are safe, he's going to escape and go back to Apullia to vengeance, to kill whoever ambushed him and sold him into slavery. But just when he's made it out the palace gate he hears a woman's scream, then a veil floats by, a veil he know quite well. Then that same scream comes again. And now our story really starts rolling. There are impersonations, imperial coups, horrible suitors, women as booty, mercenary rapists, newly found heirs, sword fights, sea battles, more Frankish knights, an enthronement, some hot romance, terrible fathers, good friends, and a happy ending.

The characterization in this book was outstanding! Ms. Townsend was dealing with three separate cultures - Byzantine, Varangian, and Frank, and yet she made those differences come alive in these characters, so much that you felt like you knew them and understood them. Even the prejudices of the Byzantines against all foreigners as barbarians she made them understandable given the height of their culture and standards of living. But not not all of them were prejudiced against foreigners - like Lady Anna and her friend Constantine, who found them interesting, even honorable. Even with those prejudices the Varangians made up the Imperial Guard exclusively. They guarded the Emperor and the Imperial family - whoever sat on that throne. This was made clear in the book when the coup happened, like changing clothes, they changed their loyalty to the new emperor and his family - just like that. It was amazing. The characters in this book were so human, so full of flaws and self doubt. Some had emotional damage. The evil ones were more grey than black, more self serving than evil. No stereotypes here. It was really quite refreshing how everyone was an individual, even the secondary characters had traits and foibles all their own. Excellent work Ms. Townsend, few could have done better than you. My favorite characters were Lady Anna, Sir William and Constantine.

The pacing in the book is good and silky smooth. It pulls you from the very first page and leads you on a quick silken trail through the book, never slowing or speeding, just quick and silky from either William's POV or Anna's and back again. It's childs play to tell them apart so the transitions are silky smooth too. The dialogue in the book is supposed to be Greek, but of course it's in English. The dialogue is very formal in most of the book because they are at the Imperial Court. When they are in private the dialogue is much more informal. It is all credible. As dialogue goes, it is really quite well done.

The ending of the book was a total surprise with no way to guess what was going to happen. While it happened rather quickly, it was totally credible given the situation. I can't think of a better ending than than the one in the novel, and the quickness didn't bother me at all. That's the first time I've ever found that to be true after reading literally thousands of books. That's some kind of magic ending Ms. Townsend, if I don't mind that it was quick and can't think of a better one. You've got me flummoxed!

All in all, this no bodice ripper romance. This the genuine article! This a historical novel with some romance thrown in. Not to say that the romance isn't good - it most definitely is. My hats off to you Carol Townsend, this was one helluva good book. And they say romance writers cannot write. Everytime someone says that I'm going to point to you and just laugh at how wrong they are. You could write anything you put your mind to. Btw I want to thank Carol Townsend and Goodreads First Reads, where I was a very lucky winner of this book. What a perfect book to win. I enjoyed it immensely.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes historical novels, and also romance novels - you're in for a treat. I also recommend this book to people who like books about political intrigue or simply a thumping good read. There's so much going on in this book to make hordes of people happy. Buy it! You won't be wasting a penny or a second of your time. It is really that good. Happy reading!

3.5 rating. I liked it. However the story a little slow in the telling and a little repetitive in places. The Byzantium period is not a one I am overly familiar with but the author does seem to have done her research. Worth a read

È talmente noioso che non posso nemmeno farcela ad arrivare al mio solito minimo di pagine di lettura. Ripete sempre le stesse cose, non succede un bel niente e tutto scorre lento e privo di brio. Ciao Carol.

A heady mix of enthralling period detail, meticulous historical research, breathtaking emotional intensity and heart-pounding passion, Chained to the Barbarian is a first-class historical romance from the immensely talented Carol Townend.

Fate had dealt Sir William Bradfer a cruel hand. Once, he had been a man with the world at his feet and a bright future ahead of him, but when he had fallen foul of destiny, William had ended up enslaved, wretched and desperately fighting for survival. Responsible for the well-being of two little girls, William is determined to unshackle himself from the chains that have taken away his freedom and to become the master of his own destiny once more. Only by fighting against the bonds that constrict him can William reclaim his life and ensure the safety of his wards. But when William crosses paths with Lady Anna of Heraklea at a Constantinople slave trade, little does the valiant warrior realize that fate has further surprises in store for him…

Lady Anna might not be enslaved, but her freedom is just as restricted as William’s. Betrothed to a man whom she doesn’t love, Lady Anna would give anything to marry a man of her own choosing. But having already shamed and disobeyed her father once before, Anna knows that if she’s to win her father’s approval once again, then she must do his bidding. Having already resigned herself to a miserable future, Lady Anna is determined to make the most of her last few months of freedom – until she attends a slave auction and her gaze collides with the powerful and devastatingly handsome slave, Sir William Bradfer!

Despite the fact that she doesn’t have much money, Anna finds herself spending all of her savings on acquiring William. Anna might keep telling herself that she only bid for William to ensure that the two little girls that were with him are given a decent chance at a better life, but deep down she knows that the only reason why she has bought the warrior slave is because she is dangerously attracted to him! A vast social chasm might divide the two of them, but when a sizzling flame of desire erupts between them, Anna and William find themselves united by a powerful passion which simply cannot be denied!

His freedom might be uppermost in his mind, but William is unable to stop thinking about taking Anna in his arms and making her his! Although his heart is inextricably intertwined with Anna’s, William will not let anything get in the way of becoming his own man, until Anna stops him in his tracks with a shocking ultimatum: she will grant him his freedom, if he consents to becoming her husband!

Reading a novel by Carol Townend is like stepping back in time into a world of strong heroines, bold heroes, intense drama, emotional tension and high stakes passion and readers looking for an evocative, heart-rending and sublimely told story shall not be disappointed with the exciting, engrossing and highly enjoyable Chained to the Barbarian!

Written with plenty of flair and gravitas, Chained to the Barbarian is a captivating historical romance from an inimitable writer who knows how to hold her readers spellbound: Carol Townend!

I'm not going to lie and say imagining a guy Cheeto colored man with bulging muscles dashing buck naked in a castle like a woods elf isn't funny fun! Cause it is. Sounds like Harlequin doesn't it?

Man enjoying his Cheeto-ness.

Hide the children again. Another one of "those" steamy reviews!
Attention all Harlequin junkees...Omigod now I too, own a steamy Harlequin like my dear mother...I received this little paperback book from Carol Townend, signature included. So if she got me (huge romance cynic) to read about William the Frankish Knight's bulging orange biceps (barf) and Anne the beautiful cynical scheming virgin and their sex life. She wrote rather well! Which is great!

So let's get down to the nitty gritty!

Plot

Sir William is standing in a Constantinople slave market when Lady-in-waiting Anna is going to be married—against her will. When she sees William - half alive but still proud and chained. She formulates a plan , captured knight will be freed. Only if he promises to give her a ring.

Sex

You all know that's the reason you read these!I generally don't know if this company publishes romances with light sex or graphic sex but there is one scene in the book that is written in a graphically elegant way (Lol geez). The rest is just smooching and carrying to one sex scene. There isn't a thousand scattered through this book. I can see where this book would be great for readers. And it's suspenseful! Another great point! The sexual interaction builds throughout the whole story. A touch there. A kiss there. The lusciously painted bedroom ceiling there. So it's "fulfilling" and the plot climaxes well. No pun intended!

Will I read more? Eh...Meh...Undecided.

It seems to be a medieval romance wrapped into one. If you love Byzantine times and are a fan of Harlequin you will not be disappointed! Oh.....And it has sex!

"Oh how delicious is your beautiful blonde hair and bruised muscular body." Ahem.... It was a light read.

I won this book through a first reads giveaway. The author even signed it :)

I liked this book, but it was a little "light" on the romance. I suppose this is to be expected of the publisher. This might not be
a problem for other readers, but I'm used to reading books with lots of extra steamy sex scenes.

Despite the lack of the sex scenes, this book was very interesting as it was well written and well researched. I learned a lot about the time period.

The characters were well developed and had chemistry. The only thing I didn't like was I didn't really feel like they fell "in love". As it was a shorter book the characters didn't really get a chance to go through much together. Usually this conflict makes the reader feel as though the characters are really falling in love even in a short amount of time. This book lacked that, which I felt detracted from the story.
