'What Your Dog Wants' focuses on the owner rather than the dog, and encourages readers to develop the 7 key skills that will respond to their dog's needs. In doing so, it shows how to work together as a team, which is equally rewarding for both owner and dog.
This is a good place to start if you are thinking about a dog and want some general information on what to expect. It doesn't go into too much depth about how to master the skills that are mentioned in the book. I read it in one afternoon, an hour and a half maybe, so it's not a commitment in itself.
Ok, so I started out LOVING this book because who doesn't want to know what your dogs' mannerisms mean? But that only lasted for like, 2 chapters and then it becomes a basic guide to having dogs. Just the same old stuff, training, playtime, etc. Bla bla bla in my opinion. Now, I'm not saying all that info wasn't well presented -- hence the secondary title about key skills... but I was just hoping for more about dog psychology and less about the basics of dog handling.
Also, my one last complaint is that the 2 chapters (or whatever) of info that I wanted was as basic as can be. I had already learned most of the info from another dog owner manual that did it in one page... so, it's not that this book isn't worth picking up and reading, it just disappointed me a tad.
