Katastrophic Decisions serves as the back story of Katarina Redford, a healer. It takes place before she was ripped from her life and forced into Ledger chaos.
Some people would kill for the chance to be endowed with the ability to heal. However, Kata Redford and her few remaining family members have spent the past several years hiding in the rugged Oregon mountains from religious zealots and other crazies who seek to either punish her for her inherent ability or possess it for themselves. Now, at twenty eight years of age, she's reached a pivotal moment in her life. Realizing that something she'd wanted so badly was not meant to be, with an open mind and an aching heart, she sets off to find her own path in life. Unexpectedly, Kata is enraptured by the beautiful Levin Chase, an intriguing drummer for the band, Stage a Revolt. Through their equally undeniable attraction, Kata finally learns what it means to live life to the fullest. Thanks to Levin's strong determination, they begin to build a rock solid future on the heels of a nearly catastrophic decision. But as usual in her life, just when everything starts looking up, her world falls to pieces.
Born and raised in Northeast Louisiana, I grew up on well water, dirt roads, deer meat and garden grown vegetables. Although it would be interesting to say I spend my time exploring exotic destinations and drinking wine from barrels in Tuscany, that is not the case. I live in the real world. Currently, my days are spent working in the ever exciting world of bookkeeping. Night time for me does not mean breaking into the Smithsonian to steal the hottest work of art to sell on the black market. In fact, the only work of art I’ll see will be created by one of my awesome kids while they’re doing anything possible to keep from getting in bed on time. As with every other small town girl, I have dreamed of breathtaking adventures and schmoozing with the elite. I actually managed to make it about two thousand miles and a few months before realizing that the big city lights are better left to big city girls and my wild imagination. No adventure is as fulfilling as being wrapped in the strong arms of my love while surrounded by the laughter and arguing of our not so little ones. R. L. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Katarina Redford is a healer. She can heal with her touch. Her parents were killed trying to keep her safe from religious zealots. She’s lived with her Aunt and Uncle and cousins in the mountains of Oregon since then. They live off the land and what little Kata earns at the trade fairs selling her herbal remedies. After realizing her relationship with Nick is going nowhere, he’s still in love with his dead wife, she decides to leave the wilderness and find her own place in the world. On her way out of town, Kata starts a friendship with Levin, the female drummer of a band playing in town. Kata ends up traveling with the band to San Francisco where they part ways, and she makes her way to her sister’s house. Kata and Levin come together again, and just when things seem to be going great between Kata and Levin, tragedy strikes. Will Kata ever find her place in the world?
This was an extremely well-written, fast-paced book. I really enjoyed it. The story line was excellent. It did contain some f/f scenes, so if you don’t like that, this book isn’t for you. I could feel the hopelessness that Kata felt because nothing ever seemed to go her way. Just when she was happy, it all went bad. I didn’t like Kass. She was definitely a selfish woman. The way that Nick turned out just shocked me. I could totally understand why Kata’s family stayed in the wild. The people she met in California, and the way they acted, would make anyone want to run and hide. The ending had me just wanting to totally throw my Kindle across the room. I couldn’t believe where the author ended it. It’s just wrong to leave me hanging like that. I can’t wait to read more.
I received the request to review this book a few months ago and I’ve delayed a bit in reading it because I, for some reason, was expecting it to be more supernatural in nature. So I kinda feel silly, because it wasn’t at all what I expected it to be and I really enjoyed it.
Years ago, Kata escaped to the mountains with her family; living the “simple” life in order to keep her family and her secret safe. Kata can heal people. She can heal the tiniest of cuts to the largest of life ending injuries. And there are people out there that want to exploit her. After being rejected by the man who can’t love her back, Kata ventures into the nearest town planning to drink away her sorrows. At the bar, Kata meets the beautiful Levin playing with her band. Levin is the drummer, but when the band is finished with their set, she begins to sing…and Kata is blown away with the feelings in Levin’s voice. Even though Kata has had a few too many drinks, she’s completely caught off guard when Levin comes on to her; Kata’s never been attracted to a woman before! Kata still can’t deal with the rejection and her life of solitude, so the next night she finds herself hitching a ride with Levin and the band down to San Francisco to visit her twin sister Kassidy. So the story follows Kata…from trying to rekindle the relationship with her sister to falling in love with Levin. A journey that will bring her back to the mountains and ultimately to a place she never wanted to be.
Ominous, huh? Not really…
The Pros:
Once I started reading it, I was quickly drawn in and found myself not wanting to put it down. I wouldn’t say that its a fast paced story, but I was hooked from the very beginning.
I really liked Kata. She’s a bit selfish at times, and even has a little guilt about that selfishness, but I think that at this point in her life, after giving up all that she has given up, she deserves to do for herself for once.
I really liked Levin. Yeah, she’s a woman, but she was hot in a sexy, buff kinda way; not at all butch. Possessive and dominant and…yeah, she was sexy.
There’s some other great characters too. Kassidy and the demon twins and Kata’s family in the mountains. I was even liking Mouse in the end.
The cliffhanger. OMG I was freaking out!
The Cons:
I didn’t care for the “insta-love”. Kata and Levin hardly know each other and it doesn’t take long before they are going all in with a relationship. So I feel like that connection between them was a bit forced upon me, although I clearly felt the attraction.
The last quarter of the book felt a bit too drawn out to me. At that point, I felt that characters were either about to make the same mistakes again, or something really bad was about to go down. Can you guess which one happened?
I wanted there to be more action and drama revolving around Kata’s power. It was there and she uses it, but it didn’t feel like a big focal point of the story other than her having to keep it a secret.
Recommended…I will definitely check out the other book, MissRebel Nights, that is already released and keep the rest of this collection on my radar.
*Note: Apparently this “collection” can be read in any order as the stories do not occur in chronological time, although that leaves me a bit confused about what happens next to Kata after that ending!
Katarina, or Kat, is a healer. Depended upon by all those who love and protect her. A healer despised and hunted for being what she is.
She and her twin were ripped from all they knew as normal when the unexpected happens. Thanks to her aunt and uncle, they are saved, nurtured and loved. But her twin Kassidy leaves and seeks her own future. Soon, Kat has to make her own decision: to stay or to go.
That decision is taken from Kat when what she thought of as real, was suddenly found to be just all in her head. Needing to finally be free and experience life as she once knew it, she decides to go. On her way to her twin, she meets Levin, a drummer. Beautiful, talented, sleek, loving. Will Kat now find what she had been missing and dreamed of? Is she finally going to experience that happiness with the one person who could love and complete her?
This is the story of two young women who meet, become friends and finally find a romance they never expected - or maybe they did. It was kind of hard to read at first for the language used here much more fitted the YA genre than the more adult one. It was only after I realized that Kat was more like a teen rather than an adult for having lived cut off from the modern world did I understand the purpose of the author. Once I realized this, it made things easier and the story just clicked.
Katastrophic Decisions is a story of how circumstances can affect the decisions we make. It is the story of Kat who makes the decisions but the end results may not all be what she expected.
Unknown to her, out there, an evil was lurking in the shadows. Watching, waiting.
This is a multi-layered story of science fiction, mystery, thriller and a romance between two women both so talented in their own rights. We read about Kat and her simple life in the mountains. We read how Kat and Levin develop their simple romance that rings honest and true. Then we have the evil, ready to pounce on Kat and her talent as a gifted healer.
It would not be right to reveal the plot. It would be catastrophic should the story and its outcome be revealed with even a hint of a spoiler. I will leave you to wonder, to read and to experience what I did when I finally reached that ending.
And that is the only spoiler I will spoil for you.
Note: Although this is the second book, it is actually a prequel to MissRebel Nights and can be read as a standalone. Review based on ebook sent by author.
I have to be honest. When I first agreed to review this book, I didn’t read the synopsis. So, when I started to read Katastrophic Decisions, I didn’t know it was a prequel. I took two seconds to mourn the fact that MissRebel Nights was not continuing. Then, I relished the fact that I get to fill in the blanks and have the back story on Kata. Where MissRebel Nights is m/f romance, this one is f/f. Just as Rebel and Dalton are soulmates and fell in love at first sight, Kata falls for Levin at first song. Although Kata is not gay at the beginning of this book, it goes to show you the heart will love whom it wants to love. Where Kata can heal anyone, it is only Levin who can heal Kata. There is no stopping this relationship from happening, although it will be delayed at times. I love how we go from her beginning to her abduction in the same book.
