Kept: Secure in His Hands Whatever I Face

Rate this book
Using the method taught in our book, "Savoring Living How to Have an Effective Quiet Time," we take a inductive look at 1 Peter. This is a thirteen week study basking in the faithfulness and sovereignty of God regardless of the happenings in our lives. “God graciously calls us to salvation. We don’t deserve it; He’s just that good and merciful and loving. But that doesn’t mean that suffering won’t come. In fact, in Christ suffering will come.” - Secure in His Hands, Whatever I Face

I love God's Word and had spent a considerable time studying 1 Peter on my own. I was ready for the challenge of doing someone else's study on this book. I love inductive bible studies to allow the text to speak within the context of the passage. I was captivated by the title of this study, "Kept" and thought it fit well with the book (as well as how God was whispering to my heart through the book of 1 Peter). So I bought this study.

The first chapter was your typical overview for understanding the author of 1 Peter and the historical context. The second was an overview of the book of 1 Peter. Then the study authors start dividing the book into smaller sections. Study Week 3 introduces their format for the rest of this study: Day 1) Read the section of scripture and write down any thing that jumps out at you or questions you have; Day 2) Read the section of scripture and write down Truths in the text; Day 3) Read the text and write down any Promises in the text; Day 4) Read the section and write down any Commands in the text; Day 5) Read the section and write down any Application.

At first, I did not realize this Day 1-5 was a routine. It worked pretty well for the first week they used it. The authors even pose a few other thought-provoking questions within the Truth, Promise, Commands, and Application themes. However, the authors repeat this same pattern and questions for each and every section. By Week 7, they don't even list the additional questions, only the theme words and the scripture passage. The authors refer you to look at previous weeks to see questions if you want them. There are short introductory and concluding paragraphs for each week.

I am sorry I paid for this study. All I needed to do was separate 1 Peter into some sections and then ask myself about the Truths, Promises, Commands, and Application. And if I was doing it with a group, we still would not have needed a guide to follow this format (a bookmark would have been sufficient).
