I thought this was another great addition to the series. However, it wasn't quite 5-star territory for me since it felt more like setting the table for something in the next book.

That being said, there was still plenty to like. We got our quota of putting some arrogant people in their places and such. I'll admit that I struggled a little to remember certain characters at the first mention. I also wasn't a big fan of how the last few chapters were told. I think that may have been what cemented this as 4-star.

I enjoyed things mainly because I'm already invested. Most readers who are this deep into the series will probably feel similarly. There was an upscaling of many fights as we entered a new scope of the story, so I'm looking forward to where the next volume takes us.

too short!!

I devoured this as I did all others before in this series. Fantastic instalment though this arc is a little frenzied with all the battles and all the names.

Love the new developments but seriously can’t wait for the next book!! They need to be longer or faster or both!

Too many story lines appear out of no where

The story continues having all sort of story drop ins, that feel out of base with the story, some 10 year anniversary for 1st born nobody mentioned before, the way everything is solved by some masterful solution of magic or politics without any details ( The hero just found someone on the campaign that can solve taking over a city in a couple of hours). The hero's magic that grows exponentialy basically making him the most power entity in the known world without any struggle. Also I find all the names and politics in the story very confusing and hard to follow .

Campaign (Last Life Book #6) by Alexey Osadchuk

Campaign is the sixth installment in Alexey Osadchuk’s Last Life series. Max Renard, now Margrave de Valier, embarks on a perilous military expedition to reclaim Shadow Pass from the Order of the Scarlet Shield. He serves under Duke de Clairmont as part of the royal army, aiming to prove himself as both warrior and leader in a war-torn, politically divided Bergonia.

Initial Deployment: Max joins the campaign and is assigned to the frontlines. His mission: reclaim the strategically vital Shadow Pass, which has fallen into enemy hands. Tensions run high as Max is seen as an outsider by many nobles and soldiers.

Skirmishes & Strategy: The early portion of the book features guerrilla warfare, strategic retreats, and intense ambushes. Max faces off against Atalian legionnaires under the famed “Golden Lion” Ricardo di Lorenzo. His use of unorthodox tactics begins to turn heads in the army.

Political Intrigue: Amid the war, Max must deal with political games: bribing mercenaries, appeasing nobles, and managing troop morale. Several betrayal attempts are made by jealous rivals within the camp, but Max navigates them with growing confidence.

The Siege of Shadow Pass: The climax of the book is an extended siege. Max’s forces dig tunnels, disrupt supply lines, and create diversions to weaken enemy defenses. The final assault features brutal hand-to-hand combat. Despite losing many men, Max emerges victorious as the enemy retreats under the cover of night.

Reflection and Loss: The book ends with Max reflecting on the cost of victory. Though he has won the battle, he has lost good men and learned just how heavy leadership weighs. His transformation from player to power is now complete—but at great emotional cost.

Character Development

Max Renard undergoes significant growth. He starts as a cautious tactician and evolves into a decisive leader. His journey is as much internal as it is external: he learns diplomacy, inspires loyalty, and begins building a foundation for long-term rule. His presence in the political and military arenas feels earned.

Supporting characters such as Duke de Clairmont and rival commanders serve their purpose, but lack deeper development. Much of the narrative is tightly centered around Max himself, for better or worse.

Themes & World-Building

War and Leadership: The story explores the cold, strategic side of war. Leadership here is not about glory—it's about responsibility, sacrifice, and hard choices.

Power and Isolation: Max gains more influence, but becomes increasingly isolated. The more he wins, the more he questions the cost.

Political Fragility: Alliances are temporary, and trust is a currency more valuable than gold. Many of Max's victories come from manipulating these dynamics.

Strengths

Strategic Depth: The military and tactical scenes are well-researched and engaging.
Consistent Character Voice: Max’s thoughts, doubts, and determination make him a compelling protagonist.
Emotional Climax: The emotional beats land hard, especially in the final chapters.

Weaknesses

Sluggish Pacing: The middle section drags, with repetitive military planning and filler sequences.
Minimal Development of Side Characters: Most supporting characters feel interchangeable or underused.
Predictable Moments: Some turns in the plot feel too convenient or formulaic.

Final Verdict

Campaign delivers a grounded, mature take on progression fantasy through the lens of war and politics. It’s less about flashy leveling or skill acquisition and more about subtle growth, negotiation, and sacrifice. While not perfect—and arguably a transitional volume—it remains a necessary and rewarding entry for readers following Max's journey.

Rating

4.0 out of 5 glowing stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨

For those invested in the Last Life saga, this is a compelling if occasionally slow chapter. Readers expecting rapid progression may be disappointed, but those who value thoughtful leadership, grounded world-building, and morally complex warfare will find much to appreciate.

Maybe a slight dip in enjoyment but not much. There are many characters to track and it sometimes took me a while to lock into what part they each played in the story.

We're getting a better look at the enemy. They're the "ends justify the means" type of folk who will torture puppies if it advances their cause. It's fun to watch justice get served.

The plot is getting a little frayed as this series progresses. I hope Osadchuk can keep it together until the end.

A good continuation of the series. The MC is getting more and more prestige. He is now on campaign to win back his land and is part of the war effort. He is doing really well. Not much else to say. If you liked the previous books, this is more of the same and you should enjoy it.

Campaign is the 6th installment in Alexey Osadchuk’s "Last Life" series, published in 2024 and narrated by the talented Ryan Burke. This fantasy epic follows Max Renard, a character whose journey from a reincarnated soul to a cunning nobleman. In Campaign, Osadchuk elevates the stakes, plunging Max into a war-torn landscape that tests his intellect, resolve, and growing reputation. The audiobook, clocking in at just over 9 hours, is a masterclass in pacing and world-building, brought to life by Burke’s dynamic narration.

The story kicks off with Max, now titled Margrave de Valier, joining the royal army under the command of Duke de Clairmont, Marshal of Vestonia. His mission: to secure his newly granted lands, known as Shadow Pass, currently held by the formidable Knights of the Order of the Scarlet Shield. The path to his goal winds through Bergonia, a region ravaged by conflict and dominated by the Atalian legions led by Ricardo di Lorenzo, the Golden Lion - a commander whose reputation precedes him. Osadchuk paints a vivid picture of this chaotic setting, blending gritty military details with the subtle threads of political intrigue that have become a hallmark of the series.

What stands out most is Max’s evolution. No longer the desperate outsider of earlier books, he’s a calculated leader whose intelligence shines through in every decision. His interactions with allies and enemies alike are laced with tension and wit, making each chapter a chess match of strategy and survival. Osadchuk deftly balances action - think clashing swords and ambushes in shadowed valleys - with quieter moments of reflection, allowing Max’s character to breathe and grow. The supporting cast, from battle-hardened soldiers to enigmatic knights, adds depth, though Max remains the undeniable heart of the tale.

Ryan Burke’s narration is a key highlight. His ability to shift tones - from the gravelly bark of a war-weary general to the sly murmur of a scheming noble - brings the story to life with an immersive quality that’s hard to overstate. Burke’s pacing matches the narrative’s rhythm perfectly, amplifying the tension of a skirmish or the weight of a strategic pause. His portrayal of Max, in particular, captures the character’s blend of confidence and vulnerability, making every triumph feel earned and every setback palpable.

The audiobook isn’t flawless. At times, the sheer density of names and factions can overwhelm, especially for newcomers to the series. Yet, for fans, this complexity enriches the tapestry of Osadchuk’s world. The plot barrels forward with relentless momentum, weaving in mystical elements - like Max’s unique powers - that hint at larger forces at play, though their full scope remains tantalizingly out of reach by the close of this book.

Campaign embodies gripping storytelling and stellar narration. It’s a standout addition to the "Last Life" saga, leaving you eager for Max’s next move without revealing his ultimate fate. For fantasy aficionados, this is a must-listen.

if it’s war they want then it’s war they’ll get

Oh my word! Our erstwhile anti hero is off to the campaign! So much happens and there’s so much to unpack! Fights, betrayal, battles, and victory! Our anti hero could turn into a real hero or will his flame be extinguished? The soul catcher hunting him is right on his tail. This was a great read. Great pace; we get more world building, and a lot more action. The dukes are riding in after a lull in fighting. Will they be a help or a hinderance? Will he survive the political machinations let alone the frost demons? Find out next time on dragon ball Z! Ahem book 7 lol

Campaign brings a satisfying mix of strategy, tension, and character growth to the series. The political games and battle planning take center stage, and it’s clear the protagonist has come a long way from his early days just trying to survive.

It’s still easy to get lost in the growing cast, but the pacing holds up, and the payoffs feel worth it. Not a game-changer, but a solid entry that keeps the momentum going.

Good battle strategies

It was interesting to read how Max was going to expand from a single operator with a small group of warriors to a commander of a large armed force. Well done

Love the series, bad pacing in the last few books

The constant new character introduction with extensive exposition, explanation and info dumps really kill the pacing of the book. This especially becomes a problem when you read 40 pages of information dump to explain a new character in the plot line only to have the main character confront him and in three pages defeat him, making all of that exposition rather pointless. I understand you have to carry the plot line and give a death but I wish the author could integrate the story and make it less choppy. I thought book five in the series had a better flow, was exciting and a page Turner. Again I enjoy the series however the pacing is frustrating.

Still enough fun, energy and inventiveness to keep reading though the magical stakes have been raised a bit too much for my usual taste in fantasy; the narration style balances well the occasionally (and getting more often) over the top action and somehow throwing the kitchen sink and all in a shortish book as pages go still makes it entertaining rather than scattered.

Now Margrave de Valier - a title with a big catch as his lands are on the border with the deadly Shadowlands and form a Vestonian exclave in neighboring Bergonia which has just been conquered by the fanatical Attalians who burn "trueborn" mages (like our hero) at the stake on general principles - Max goes to war to get to his lands and has to face the fanatical Scarlet Cloak knights led by the Alberto di Lanzi, "The Grey Reaper" himself (a sort of Inquisition and military order in one), Duke Ricardo di Lorenzo, the Golden Lion of Attalia and the best general on the continent who has a plan to destroy the Vestonian army and possibly even conquer chunks of it when the ailing King Carl dies and his sons and nobility turn on each other for power and the throne as well as death priests from the North who haven't forgotten what Max did to them previously; of course beside his new "avant" power (the penultimate stage of the magical warriors of the world - none currently being at the ultimate stage btw) he acquired many allies, both mundane (nobles, seasoned officers and soldiers) and magical (the first "people" - sort of fairy like creatures who proclaim Max as an "auring" a sort of supreme true mage and flock to him as they are continually dispossed - incidentally to a large extent - by the Vestonians and burnt at the stake or gruesomely murdered by the Attalian fanatics and their minions)

First time in the series, book 6 ends if not quite on a cliffhanger, but at a middle of the storyline tbc point though I expect this particular storyline to be finished in book 7.

Very good stuff still and I plan to finish the current books (Law of Power and Shadow Pass) soon and then book 9 (Predestination) becomes a huge asap in late fall.

Amazing Series!
If you love adventure and epic battles, this book is a blast! Max, now Margrave de Valier, takes us on a wild ride to claim his new lands. His cleverness and strategic moves make every battle scene thrilling and you know he'll always save the day.

Highlights:
- Epic Battles: The action is intense and brilliantly described. You’ll feel like you’re right there in the middle of it all!
- Max the Fox: Max's cunning and quick thinking keep things exciting.

A Few Quibbles:
- Too Detailed: Sometimes the descriptions are a bit much, there were alot of filler paragraphs.
- Character Overload: Introducing too many new characters at once can be confusing.
- Abrupt Ending: The book ends too suddenly, leaving you hanging for the next one (uggh, the wait!).

Overall, this one is a thrilling read. If you're into strategic battles, politics, verbal sparring outwitting your opponents and adventurous heroes, grab this book! Just be ready for an evil cliffhanger that’ll make you eager for the next installment.

I had been waiting for the next iteration in the Last Life for months. And the author absolutely doesn't disappoint. It is impossible to put the book down once you start.

Needless to say Max continues to get powerful and everyone who underestimates him sooner or later bites the dust. This book builds upon Max's past evolution, and now we see how his new connections and allies are proving to be formidable in their own right. For the first time he is thrust into organized large scale battle which is a nice deviation from most progressions which focus on solo advancement.

I had hoped to see Max interacting more with the princes of Vestonia in this iteration, but looks like we'd have to wait some more around that.

The next one can't come soon enough.

I'll start by saying I love the series and even enjoyed parts of this book but it's because I expect great things from this series why I'm disappointed in this book.

The first half of the book is just build up that should have been covered in a couple chapters so it could get to the actual story and good part of the book, the actual campaign. I don't know the page count since I listened to the audiobook (which had a great narration as usual) but since the first half of the already somewhat short book was wasted the actual meat of the story feels a little rushed and leaves you wanting more.

I don't want to give the impression that it's a bad book but it's because part entries have been great that this book feels like it should have been constructed better.

I love these books, but…

This is an outstanding series of books. I love just about everything about it from the main character, side characters how in depth the world is, the balance of action and politics and personal relationships , it’s awesome. I highly recommend.

My one issue is a writing idiosyncrasy that this author has, he repeats the same unnecessary phrases throughout each book. It even got to the point where it would completely pull me out of the story. Things like “by the way“ (32 x) and “ to be honest” (33 x) and “ honestly” (66 x). There’s nothing inherently wrong with those phrases, but they were used excessively. And that was the case in every book. It was a bit madening.

All murderous scum must die.

Max heads of to war , as usual he thumbs his nose at the world by employing a powerful guild who are out of favour with his "allies" to support him and simply travels his own path gaining power and followers as he goes , circumstances force him to take charge of the troops assigned to help him and his down to earth attitude wins him many supporters , many of his plans are coming together and book 7 is going to be great. The author has this amazing talent to make each book better than its predecessor and his characters and plot are terrific.

I've been following the last life books for a while now and honestly it's only because of the way the power progression is done.

The plot isn't really engaging and I found myself skipping pages(like I've been doing in previous books). The writing style annoys me, especially when the author uses brackets to accentuate a point.

There are no characters worth remembering and the book is starting to feel like those translated Chinese novels, where everyone is courting death, and being challenged to duels.

Anyways it's a good book, if you like OP mcs, and absolutely no stakes in any conflict.

I always enjoy reading this series. However, I must confess that the names of the secondary protagonists escape me more and more.
I'm lucky in that some of the names are very French (my mother tongue) and others rather Italian, but apart from that I don't always know who's who.

On the other hand, I find it quite amusing to see the tension building with the enemies and to discover relatively simple battles. In any case, I don't like fighting that's too precise, but this could be a problem for some.

I received a review copy of this book.
Campaign is the sixth book in this series, and it appears as if there's pstill plenty of story to tell. We see some endings, a few new alliances, and of course, more action. (but you knew that already right?) The story is moving along quite nicely. Looking forward to the nejxt book.

Too short and really would need a map!!

Mostly entertaining if way too convenient for the protagonist (especially regarding the first battle, the continued leadership question and the final battle). The last fight was again pure plot armor like in the last book..

The siege of the fortress was rather bizarre for me - first they burn everything and then they immediately use brushwood to walk over the fire? This would seem rather counterintuitive to me..

This series is addicting. Since the first book I've been anticipating each release with my heart in my throat, just needing the next one. I've made my peace in not being able to wait for two releases and binge the whole thing, I have no self control.

This is a very good power fantasy with a lot of subplots going on and I enjoy it immensely.

too much filler, too much exposition. how the hell u describe someone looking at you almost 2 pages. and describing other character too much. how the hair, what color it is, what color his eyes, scar.tell mc thingking .it happen so many times. etc. u can skip many pages and not missing the story. and looks like its going downhill from here. sad situation when progression fantasy has no progress.

Another great one

I have only one complaint.....no make that two.
I can not put the book down once I start reading no mater how late it is and it makes it feel like the book is too short.
And...the subjective feel of the time between releases feels like forever.
Thank you for another great book.
Waiting impatiently for the next installment.

Too much describing

The book was fluffed up with explaining EVERYONE'S origins, good, bad, and EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN. I understand a good book has to ebb and flow, but the author took describing and explaining to an annoying level. I didn't appreciate my money being wasted.
HOWEVER, I hope the next book will be longer and more balanced.

The plot, Thickens!

Ah, my favourite superhuman. Max Renard returns in this instalment and heads off to war! You'll see his intelligence shine and his growing reputation.

I enjoyed this, and as usual, I paired it with the audiobook for an immersing read. I recommend doing that as the narrator brings Max renard to life in a brilliant way. I can't wait for the next book

DNF @72%. This story just went off the rails. Its turned from a magic wuxia story to a medieval political warfare story. All the side-stories seem to have been dropped and replaced with a whole new cast of characters. I would probably be kinder to the novel, but each installment is $7.99. This foray into a whole different plot-line seems like a cash grab.
