A solid 3.5 ⭐️ it’s exactly what the description says, a college why choose hockey romance. It’s got some decent spice and banter that I really enjoyed!

I didn’t strongly connect to any of the characters and felt it was a lot of surface level development and I was almost left wanting. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, I think it’s meant to be a cute/quick read.

The one thing I majorly disliked is how often the guys mentioned that she wasn’t what they’d normal consider hot or traditionally pretty. It seemed pointless to continue to harp on it and kind of gave me the ick.

It could also use another round of edits, in my opinion, there were a lot of times where the wrong character name was used both in internal dialogue and I think even once on a POV, the chapter was labeled Tatum but it was actually Shawn’s POV I’m pretty sure. It’s formatted weird on Kindle, a lot weird paragraph indentations and huge spacing between sentences.

All of that said, it wasn’t a bad book. If you’re looking for a quick/light romance and you’re into why choose and hot hockey players, go for it!

I struggled with 2 of the characters having first names as last names since they refer to each other by their last names 90% of the time. And I really disliked that the female's first name was unique, but her last name, which was how she was referred to most of the time, was so generically a female name.
Some of the timing felt off, which is a big thing for me.
Not that it really matters, but does the story take place in Washington or Canada?

But what killed it for me? The epilogue! There are 4 people in this relationship. How can you only tell us what is happening with two of them? And. AND neither of the two futures we see are the main female character's?!?! We are just supposed to forget that she wanted to join the national team in place of 2 male characters making it to professional hockey?

To be honest, it needs some work. It felt like the author was rushing through the storyline and trying to cram as much unconventional things as possible, and everything was surface level. So she is tall, not conventionally attractive, a female hockey player in men's team, the fmc is taller than one of the love interests who is also bi, and also in an open/poly/don't really know relationship with the other mmc, they also have a dom/sub dynamic, it's also a RH, she also has financial issues,... I'm getting out of breath. And all of this was in like the first 30% of the book! Anything else?

It took very little convincing to get me to read this book. A why choose hockey romance? Yes, please.

What I was not expecting was to fall completely in love with these characters the way I did. This story pulled me in from the very beginning, and I devoured it. I will most definitely be buying a physical copy of this book, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a spicy sports romance.

3/5 🌶️

★ 1/5

this book tried TOO hard to incorporate too much and none of it worked, all very superficial, rushed and random. if it was written different i think it could have been decent. it’s super unrealistic in relationship and hockey terms! NO THANKS!

if you’re going to write about a 4-person relationship you have to include all 4! as in the epilogue should have been a little bit of everyone but nope 🙃

the writing style and voice was underdeveloped and childish and it didn’t work to convey the plot line.

the worst part for me, which is usually the part that saves books, was the smut. it just wasn’t good.. again the writing style comes into play here. it felt weird reading about it.

a miss for me 🙁

I really wanted to like this, but it wasn't for me. It was confusing how two of the characters had first names as their last names, and they would switch which name they used randomly. Tatum's friendship with Kate felt really shallow. I feel that as she got closer to the guys, Tatum forgot about Kate, and their friendship wasn't as important to her. I would have loved to know more about Tatum's future since that was brushed over with a casual comment on how she played for the national team.

𝐓𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐦 𝐊𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐲 (h) is on the women's hockey team at her school, but when Coach Miller informs her that there are no funds to keep the team running, she is out of options. She either has to transfer school or continues studying and takes a gap year from the sport, but she doesn't want that route. Since North Pacific has no team, her coach recommends Arden's women's team, but she knows she cannot afford to transfer mid-school year. When someone on the men's hockey team injures themselves, she asks the coach to take the right winger position since it's the one she plays. The coach reluctantly agrees, but he recruits captain 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐦 𝐎'𝐍𝐞𝐢𝐥𝐥 (H) to make it so that the position does not become permanent. However, it becomes difficult for him to stay focused and avoid her when his two best friends/roommates, 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐰𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤 (H), invite her to stay in their extra room. As the three get closer, Cal struggles to follow his coach's orders and make it so she doesn't have ice time to showcase her skills.

It started well because I liked the dynamics between Tatum, Jace, and Shawn, but with Callum added, he felt unnecessary. The book built the relationship between the three of them, as opposed to four, and when Callum realized he wanted to be a part of their dynamic, it felt too late. He kept secrets and was dismissive toward her, making it seem like he didn’t want her around. Callum felt threatened by her presence not only because of the team but what it could mean for his friendship with Jace and Shawn. On the other hand, Jace and Shawn already had a pre-existing relationship where they liked to share. Shawn didn’t want to have one-on-one moments without Jace, whereas Jace did not care if Shawn was involved. They weren’t keeping score of their moments with Tatum, but the RH element was more prominent with Tatum, Jace, and Shawn. They had these conversations about what they did and didn’t like to do regarding sharing. When it came to Callum, he seemed to like Tatum, but it felt forced and only because he saw his best friends with her and didn’t want to be excluded.

The scenes felt underwhelming when Callum was involved because it was all new to them, and that's okay. However, it felt like Callum wasn't the type of person to share, especially since he wasn't interested in this type of dynamic before. I also hated that he knew she wouldn’t be on the team much longer and he still slept with her. It was terrible on his part because he knew she might not stay for long and initiated a relationship based on lies. While Shawn and Jace were upset over it, Tatum thought they were all in on it and left them. When Callum was willing to give up his spot on the team, she came back, but I wished she had made him grovel more than that. She went back “home” with them because she missed them, but I think the damage was already done.

All this to say, I enjoyed scenes between Tatum, Jace, and Shawn and how they varied between dominant and submissive. Shawn had me hooked whenever he blushed when Tatum called him pretty boy and would give him praise… I was like oh maybe I love submissive men. Anyway, there was more between Jace and Shawn and I wish that had been explored more because it felt like Shawn had more feelings for Jace than he led on. I do think they loved her, but if she was not around, I think Shawn would have been fine with just Jace. I loved how sweet and protective they were over her, so Callum just added the grump to the group.

It was a good read, this was my first hockey ‘why choose’ romance and it was different. It was a short read, so it felt like many topics were introduced but not fully developed (e.g. her financial struggles, relationship with her parents, etc.) so I expected more when the book ended. I didn’t get the closure I wanted, I was left wanting more.

It was fine. I feel like rating this less than 4 stars wouldn’t be fair, because I can’t actually point out anything super wrong with it. It’s exactly what it says it is - a college sports why choose. I saw this recommended on Instagram, and overall, it was okay, so I’ll consider this a win.

There were definitely some editing issues, like wrong names used in chapter POV titles or throughout the dialogue, and the way it was formatted on Kindle was super weird. It had massive indents for each paragraph, and for some reason that really threw me off in the beginning.

The characters themselves were fine. I didn’t have strong feelings toward any of them, whether good or bad. I didn’t like how all the guys regretted go Tatum as not being hot but basically saying she had an interesting face. That doesn’t feel like a compliment to me. I also wish we saw more of the relationship between Jace and Shawn. They talked throughout that they’d been together and obviously had feelings for each other, and I would have liked to see that connection. Other than one brief mention, nothing actually happens between them.

no bc who let this be such a disappointing read

and ummm why are we overlooking callum???? like this man isn’t like some complicated guy he’s actually a HORRIFIC person. like he didn’t tell her she could switch teams because he didn’t want to be without a player????? basically could have completely ruined her future like her sport was her everything how could you ever say you care about someone and then do that

(and yes i know that he was manipulated into it and it was fear and all but i actually couldn’t care less the blatant disrespect for her and her profession? man is 22 years old he can think for himself)

tbh i just cant get over that part of the book the rest was pretty fine if not a little bland

like could have been deeper and all (we learn nothing about any of the guys…)

i liked the first half a lot and we stan out tall girl rep but other than that

ALSO THE AMOUNT OF TYPOS WAS DRIVING ME INSANE

like i don’t want to be a hater and i was a huge shawn and jace stan (although i wish we got more on their relationship)

also who let them all have first names for last names!???? if you’re writing a book where people go by their last names the least you can do is make it obvious they are last names

I was provided an ARC in exchange for a review.

I finished the book today and I absolutely loved Callum, Jace, Shawn, and Tatum and the relationship build up between all of them. Jace, Shawn, and Tatum hit it off early in the book and their interactions were cute and even though Callum pretended to dislike Tatum he was always protective of her and it was damn adorable!! I’ve really liked the “Why Choose Romances” and have been into hockey romances lately so this book gave me the best of both worlds ❤️

Needed a bit more polishing in the development of the characters’ relationships. Everything happened in small jumps with little explanation as to how the relationships were progressing in the beginning - it got better later in the book.

Why Choose (With MM, but it’s light)
College Hockey Romance
Power Dynamics and Praise
No Cheating. No OWD. No Pregnancy.
Look, 3 stars doesn’t mean it is bad. It just means there is room for improvement.
I liked the idea and most of the execution, but there is a handful of irks that threw me off.
The characters are lovely but they are a bit two dimensional. I needed more depth to make me fall in love with them.
We had Callum who was the control freak grumpy captain. We all love a grump and I liked seeing that little peak into what made him dislike her and the eventual sensitive reveal when he loses her, I just needed more from him than that.
I never feel like I got a solid read on who Rivers was as a person. I know who he is in a general sense but beyond his relationships with the main characters, I have no clue.
Shawn was such a sweet soul and his submissive golden retriever devotion to Tatum was perfect, but again, who is he outside of hockey and his relationships?
It’s as if we got just a glimpse into who they are to tell them apart but not enough to fall for them.
I find Tatums character interesting in that we have this jock female lead who is somehow extremely pragmatic but also very big hearted.
All these characters had so much potential and yet, I don’t feel like they were done justice. The relationships felt very stilted at times. I think this needed more tension and passion to make it believable. Consent is sexy, but it’s sexier if it doesn’t feel like a boardroom business transaction. I think there was an opportunity in those moments to show an emotional connection, but what we got felt formal.
I also felt like this had an opportunity to have a found family atmosphere and it missed the mark a bit. I know nothing about the other players on the team except for the best friends ex. I don’t really know much about the best friend except for a few details. The brother and brother-in-law were sweet and added some depth, but they sort of felt like an easy explanation for Tatums lack of parental figures.
All of this being said, I liked the book for the most part. I liked the power dynamics and the submissive male lead. I liked that the FMC was out of the typical box sports romances tend to put women. This was worth my time reading it and I don’t regret that at all. If anything, I just see so much potential here.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 🌶🌶🌶/5

TW - homophobia (implied & recounted), parental disownment (mentioned), death of a parent (mentioned), sports sexism (throughout), sexual harassment (on page), death of a parent (mentioned), foster care system (mentioned)

CW - voyeurism, submission, DP

Tropes - reverse harem - MMFM, sports, close proximity

This book has a FLOORPLAN and I for sure judged the characters at the beginning as follows 😏:
Callum is an alphahole, rich, he or his family owns the house
If there's MM, Jace and Shawn are fucking; Jace is probably pretty easy going and maybe the golden retriever of the group.

and I'm happy to report that I was pretty accurate 🤪.

Tatum (FMC) is a 6'1 hockey player (yep, this one's for the tall girlies) and the women's hockey team is no more but she needs to play in order to keep her scholarship. Do you know who has a hockey team? The men, they do; so naturally, she joins their team.

It's on the men's team that we meet the 3 MMCs, Callum, Jace and Shawn. I really loved the dynamic that was built between the characters and the friendship and relationship they began to build. Callum took longer to come around but I was just happy when he eventually did.

The smut was good, I loved how all the MCs communicated with each other and Tatum didn't shy away from letting them know exactly what she wanted 😏

This was a short and quick read but if it was a bit longer, I'd want to know the characters more. We got a lot of surface level stuff but I think if it was a little longer, we could really get to know them

Overall, a quick and enjoyable read

Scale:
⭐️ - would've DNF'ed / continued out of spite
⭐️⭐️ - shit, but whatever
⭐️⭐️⭐️ - meh, could've been better
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - lit 👅
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - loved it, inject this shit into my veins 🤪

🫑 - no smut
🌶 - no point
🌶🌶 - mediocre at best
🌶🌶🌶 - standard smut, hot
🌶🌶🌶🌶 - 🥵 okay, some CW

*The Good*
⇒ I loved the communication and the gained consent in the spicy scenes.  Hearing Tatum tell them exactly what she wants and how she wants it was 🥵🥵🥵.

⇒ I liked how all the characters were their own people, with a clear difference in personalities, how they think, and what they want.  The male characters' relationship between each other helps to strengthen the relationship with Tatum, and I was so glad when finally Callum joined the relationship.

*The Bad*
⇒Some parts of the storyline felt rushed, and other parts felt like they had been introduced but never fully developed.  I would have also loved to have delved more into why Callum was a control freak, why Jace was a Dom, and why Shawn needed praise.  And why was the MM spice fade to black? There was such a setup for it, and I was ready for it, and then nothing.

⇒There are grammatical errors all through this, and it could have done with another couple of rounds of editing.  It wasn't so bad that it took me out the story, but there are enough that I was noticing them.

Disclaimer: I got this book for free on Kindle. I participated in stuff your kindle day where I got a bunch of romance books for free, roughly 2,000 books. I normally do not read romance books but I wanted to try the genre. I typically read fantasy, science fiction, biographies, and classics so this is way out of my comfort zone. My plan is to draw a book at random without reading the summary, title, and avoiding looking at the cover. As long as the book is not too graphic for me or leads into something uncomfortable, I will be attempting to finish as many of these books as I can in 2024. I understand that many of these books will likely not be top tier but I am hoping that I can learn something about the romance genre as a whole and figure out if any types of books in this genre are for me. This first book I picked to ease myself in with something familiar.

Review which may or may not have spoilers: The start of the book was fairly engaging. I thought a good place to start in reading romance books was to try a sports related book and this one did not disappoint. The development of the main character in the first half quarter of the book was great. The story revolved around the sport and her struggles to stay in school due to financial issues. However, the book quickly changed into a reverse harem with too much smut and way too little plot. Reading through the first half of the book I assumed that the main character would have to choose between two guys. Sixty percent of the way through the book it became clear that she would not be choosing between the two and instead would be in some sort of relationship with three guys. I am not judging but that type of romance is clearly not for me. I would have preferred more drama around the sport and her financial situation mixed in with having to choose between the guys and development of their characters. Overall, not a terrible first book to read. The plot in the first half saved the book from getting a one star.

3.5 ⭐️

WHY CHOOSE HOCKEY ROMANCE?? COUNT ME IN, this book was EVERYTHING, it’s such a short book but yet captivated the right amount of angst, fluff and smut all together, I am in awe with what the author created with a little page count, especially with 4 main characters! I liked how different this book felt, not only the why choose part but the fmc tatum, in every other hockey book I’ve read the fmc never played hockey like the mmcs usually do so I feel like that was a nice touch to the story and gave it a uniqueness for me that kept the rating at a 5! tatum was such a badass, I loved seeing a character like her still showing emotion and not being a one dimensional character, her story was so jarring in the way she’d find a way to stay then it’d be taken away, i felt so bad for her when everything was revealed! callum, i love him now but my god did I feel like I got whiplash with his character, but I loved seeing his growth throughout it, it was beautiful to read about how he slowly warmed up to tatum! jace, I love his character from the beginning, he was always so in touch with tatum and her needs, he wasn’t as well fleshed out as callum, but I feel like we got enough glances to know enough with the page count! shawn, my baby, my favourite, he had the most backstory to him, and although there definitely could’ve been more too it, im glad we got that but if story to him, and the way he is now because of that trauma is similar to how I react to certain situations, and his personality was like mine too, it’s nice to have a character you can relate to in different ways and gain a sort of comfort from that! overall, an AMAZING book, with so much character and story to it that I fell in love from the beginning, everything about it I loved!
