During Lent each year, Christians give up something as an act of sacrifice and spiritual discipline. Often it is something like chocolate, knowing that after Easter Sunday they can once again enjoy what they have given up. James Moore challenges readers to take it further—to give up something spiritually that they would be better off not doing. He invites all to seek God's help to focus on eliminating one habit or attitude that is destructive. Imagine giving up envy, jealousy, self-pity, apathy, procrastination, gossip, resentment, or negative thinking, how much better life would be.The forty days of Lent are ideal to use this study and prepare to give up something bad while preparing to fully embrace the "Good News" of Easter. Study includes seven sessions, one for each Sunday in Lent and Easter Sunday. Each session features a Scripture reference, a personal reading, questions for personal reflection or group study, and closing prayer.
Never thought the inverse of giving up something good for Lent would make sense. Giveing up self centeredness. Now that takes effort and is beneficial to others.
Far too simplistic a treatment of what could be an interesting process of viewing Lent as a time for changing oneself. We could have picked a better book.
Very easy read. The premise of this book is great--the idea of giving up bad or limiting behaviors for Lent and then giving them up permanently. But it seemed to be written very simplistically; not much meat here. It would be pretty good for a Sunday school Lenten study.
I really liked this twist on Lenten sacrifice. Instead of denying tangible objects, the author focused on thoughts and habits - envy, self-pity, apathy, gossip, negative thinking, etc. What a better place this world would be if we would lay these down forever.
Great study. Give up a bad habit or a bad attitude instead of beer, candy or chocolate and become a changed person come Easter Sunday. Includes reflection questions and prayers.
Lots of anecdotal wisdom for a child of God to embrace in this book. Easy to read and follow and encouraging for those who want a closer relationship with God and others.
