Kamachi Kazuma (鎌池和馬) is a Japanese-born light novel author and the original creator of the Toaru Majutsu no Index light novel series and Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, its spin-off manga series.
I can't contain my feelings for this volume... I expected few surprises from this volume, as I had already taken SO many spoilers, that I felt that nothing new could be presented to me, but I was profoundly wrong.
They are no longer words that just lean towards Kamijou Touma, they are words that surround all of humanity, breaking down the fourth wall... Feelings that all humans must feel at least once in their life, a profound lack of uniqueness, the threats of a parallel universe or a predestined destiny where you can't do anything to change.
This was not a simple volume, Index has never proven to be as unique as it is now. I felt... With this volume I felt that it was not only the world of toaru that was distorted, but the reader's own world. Thank you Kamachii Kazuma, you have proved once again to be a genius man.
There is no perfect world, but there is the ideal of a better world... Nobody really wants to die, people just want to have a better life "As much as a world with servants who just follow your orders, it's comfortable, no matter how you look at it, it's an empty world, a world that can never feel warmth or salvation" by Kamijou TOuma (Well, I've changed a little bit , but that's more or less what he says)
Everything is simply wonderful... Writing has reached its peak, the use of metonyms, metaphors, the author's construction for everything up to this moment resemble perfection It's amazing that even with all his ideals broken, Kamachii still has something to tell, a philosophy of life to give us, an unparalleled depth
Honestly, I have never felt such a strong sadness reading LNs as in this one...... I could feel so close to Kamijou Touma, but at the same time, far away to not be able to talk to him or embrace his selfishness, just close to understand it (Well I'm glad a character did it for me)
I feel that all of Kamijou Touma's preparation was for this moment, for this accumulation of philosophies and arguments of what is right and wrong. Seriously, this is probably the best written volume of light novels I've ever seen... The narrative is tempting, original, all the introductions have insane beauty and creativity, the script and philosophy here are wonderful, so many questions, so many resolutions
Everything connects beautifully... From the simplest term of "How Kamijou Touma could handle balancing light and dark" to the meaning of the right hand for a world where only emptiness remained.... No, that world with infinite possibilities it would not be able to limit itself with just these few connections. There are still stories to be told, people being saved, people being forgotten, people heading towards despair and others towards salvation. That's how the world works, everyone has their difficulties, their baggage to take with them on the way. It's just that each bag has a different weight just as people have their own strength, whether emotional or physical. Basic physical calculations that mix dynamics with one-way movements will state...... With the fatigue of carrying a large bag, probably at the end of the path, like a customs, with the exchange of effort, you can acquire an achievement. Still, no matter how you look at it, it's a way to go, but if you just look forward to the dream, probably if you regret your dream, you won't be able to go back, after all you never paid attention to your back . Even if you go on without looking ahead and just looking back, you will probably never reach your dream, and in the end, you will find yourself lost. The answer is obvious, achieve balance, however difficult it may be, this is the most plausible option to live properly
And even with the empty world, that boy's heart was full, even after his blood had dropped so many times
Touma, how much did you hold back? How much have you destroyed yourself just to save other people from misfortune? It's okay to be selfish..... I hope that being based on Schrodinger's cat has opened his mind more to future problems Grind your teeth and clench your fist, hero... Go punch some gods and change the fate once more
(THE REVIEW IS OVER, BUT WHAT YOU'LL FIND FROM HERE WILL BE AN ANALYSIS OF WHO KAMIJOU TOUMA IS)
Simply a God, isn't it? Damn, what a fucking character bro!!! Honestly, I already knew that Touma was a deep character, but I never expected so much complexity from him, but I was wrong... I got to the point that not even after reading parts of his monologues a few times, I felt that I still didn't understand him. completely.
Well, here's my theory about who Kamijou Touma really is:
Kamijou Touma is a hero, no matter how much he denies it, his actions prove otherwise. Still, a hero must have a motive, right? As much as the spiky-haired boy says he does it just because he wants to, it doesn't seem right to me..... Kamijou Touma is a liar, a pessimist towards himself and an optimist towards the rest of the world, so , just maybe........ And if just as proven in his belittling on the way to his suicide, if like him he constantly asserts that he's just a normal kid, then what if the same incongruous pessimism applies to his moral? The answer is simple, Kamijou Touma lied again without realizing it.
After all, why is he so pessimistic about himself? I'm ignorant, I admit, just speculations, but to answer my question, how about we look back? Kamijou Touma was an unlucky child, targeted by all the misfortunes in the world to the point that, as stated in OT4, he was once targeted with murderous intent. The poor boy was crying, he was crying to see himself in that situation, pure tears, but unblemished by misfortune, and yet he kept moving on.
What if Kamijou Touma's past influenced him to be the person he is today? I understand that the Touma of the past is dead and what we see is a new man, but as he says: "I may still have some memories... Isn't it obvious where my memories reside? They reside in my heart" .
My personal theory is that because Touma understands what it is to suffer, because he understands how painful it is to cry with no one to wipe his tears besides yourself (Something also portrayed in NT9). This is the reason he grits his teeth and clenches his fists to save the others, bathing in the strong, violent pressure of the shower of sin.
Still, this pessimistic personality connects correctly with everything said before and also with his hypocritical selfishness (You've already noticed how Touma, even though he has a lot of attachment to other people's lives and his own, he still gives his life to save so many people... I think which suits your personality well).
Earlier I also said that Kamijou Touma constantly lied to himself and readers (which is a really cool concept to use in a plot twist), and the coordination the author does on this is wonderful! Something that was in front of us all along, but that we never really noticed.
Kamijou Touma is a liar, the ideals he creates are false and only used as a bridge to reach his selfish and altruistic goals, and in his great monologue with "Misaka Will" he partly admits this. This explains how conflicting their arguments were at times and it also fits in very well with the character.
Kamijou Touma is certainly one of the deepest and most complex characters in LNs, and I'll be looking forward to not only knowing more about Touma from the present, but also from the past (I've heard NT11, Biohacker arc, and NT22R work well for this).
NT vol 9 certainly lives up to to its hype. Kamijou Touma has been my symbol of justice from middle school (aside from Mikoto of course). I always thought that justice-driven protagonist can't be stand straight if asked the question 'how do you even decide whether what you're doing justice or not'. And Kamijou had always been into a protagonist that did what he deemed right at the time. In Ichihanaransai especially, he did't give 2 ducks about Ollerus even though he is planning a good deed, that's what made him intriguing to me lol. In this volume, somebody finally threw the justice question to him, he tripped not realizing he didn't fight for solely justice. Maybe this is the first time he fight for himself, thanks to The Will. I really enjoy seeing him suffering in this volume lmao. Not really excited to see the once-badass-Othinus turning into fan-service material but oh well, can't change anything bleh. Next volume seem interesting enough, how can Touma convince the whole world to stop witch-hunting Othinus?
This stands as my 2nd favourite book of all time, not just as part of the Index series, but as a whole. Seeing an emotionally broken Touma was genuinely heartbreaking, that long monologue by him still makes me cry whenever I read it, and the way it was resolved, it was all so amazing.
Going to leave a short review for this volume specifically. This is the best written entry in the series so far. Kamachi at his best. Excellent character writing and plotting. Very monogatari-esque. Sometimes I feel like Kamachi is his own worst enemy in that he gives into his own desires rather than trying to put out the best possible story/character writing etc... This Volume was very impressive though so fire.
The perfect culmination of the entire Index series. An introspective study on Touma that furthers him as a character and reflects on every single book before this. I devoured this entire LN in one sitting, immediately after finishing NT8, because I didn't want to leave myself in suspense.
