When I read this to two of my great-grandchildren they loved the pictures and demanded crayons to make their own "Oh Dear, Said the Deer" pictures. They were able to express how good it is to help friends and have a good time together outside. The rhythm and rhyme are also very good to expose preschool children to how language can flow. Both of these children were preschool age and of two of our grandchildren and are cousins and play together often and both are very verbal. Great title, great illustrations and the kids loved it.
The ebook that I picked up was illustrated by Harry Aveira and the graphics were very clear and colorful; much better than the illustrations showing on goodreads. The rhyming story was cute, but I did have a hard time reconciling a monkey, elephant, rhino, and silk worm in a cold winter spruce forest. Still, young children will delight in the search for a hat for the deer and the friendships the deer makes along the journey.
My older kiddos loved this as a read aloud. It kept their interest, was a bit emotional, and gave them a problem to solve. This author is always a solid win.
This short rhyming book is a good choice for a read aloud or bedtime story. Though the recommended ages are three to nine, I would suggest it for children age three to six. Story line involves a very sweet deer who gets very wet when it rains because he does not have a hat. He asks all his friends in the forest to share a hat, but none of them work because the deer has two antlers on top of his head. In the end the deer's friends come through with a very ingenious solution.
This book displays the animals as polite, compassionate, cooperative, generous and caring providing excellent role models for the young child. The illustrations are done in pencil lines with pastel colors. Even though they are well drawn, sometimes the details are a bit difficult to see clearly.
“It was raining in the forest; winter had quickly come. / Snow fell all night long; it was dark and very glum.” But this book is bright and beautiful, with smooth rhymes, begging to be read aloud, nice rhythm, and a pleasing story about a cold deer searching for a hat that might cover his antlers.
The pictures are a delight in this book too, with the hand-made look of crayons, fun expressions, warm lines, and none that shiny coldness of computer images. Meet an elephant, a rhino and more as this dear deer asks all his friends for help. Finally, Oh Dear Said The Deer proves to be a tale of true friendship, showing anything is possible, and a frozen deer can have fun in the snow after all.

The story of this one is really cute for little kids.
Admittedly, I think the little kids will be happy with the illustrations, as well, because they're small and won't be judgmental about such things. However, the illustrations do leave a little to be desired if you're looking at it with a more adult and discerning eye.
My kids loved "Oh Dear Said The Deer" and the funny illustrations too! This book is a bout a deer that's head is too cold so it wants a hat. He goes and asks his friends if he can borrow one but can't until one friend comes up with a solution.
Great rhyming words and an enjoyable story for all.
If the illustrations matched up with the story or if the boys liked the illustrations, I would have rated it higher. Because of those two the boys didn't have a lot of interest with this book.
Great story with a great lesson. My 3 year old granddaughter loved it. Beautiful illustrations. We loved the that all the diverse group of friends helped as a group at the end.
What a cute book on friendship and care. When we love our friends, we try to find ways to help with their dilemmas. I love how they came together and found a solution. I also loved the rhyming.
This is a great book about not giving up, friendship and helping others. The deer could have been frustrated, but his friends wanted him to play outside without being cold. The friend’s had connections and had a special hat made for him, so he was not left out.
I loved this book with it's beautiful rhymes and cute pictures. I think children will find this book a great read that will keep them occupied over and over again. Great job!
