So Help Me God, this was a funny novel. Not the kind of funny where I was clutching my side while rolling on the sidewalk, threatening to breach the threshold of oncoming traffic, and end up as a hood ornament or flattened to the road to the point where I needed to be peeled off the pavement with a shovel. But it was certainly funny in an amusing, quirky sort of way where the characters often surprised me with either their next line of dialogue or the situations that they managed to find themselves in the middle of, often with very little effort on their part.

Davis “Don’t you dare call me, David” Way has a heart of gold, a friend named Fantasy, a lover named Bradley, a job as a body double, and sometimes lends her hand as casino muscle in the middle of Biloxi, MS. That’s Mississippi, y’all, home of the third largest concentration of casinos in the lower forty-eight, and previous stomping grounds of Hurricane Katrina, which left her thumbprint and watermark long after she blew out of town. Just as Davis does when the story takes her to Beehive, AL, and she finds herself in the middle of a holier-than-thou slot tournament scandal that threatens to take every dime from the blue-haired and blue-eyed church going folk. Sure, the job may not be for everyone, but Davis Way is about to have her day.

The long list of misfits and miscreants include ex-ex-husbands (it’s a long story and don’t get her started), an elderly woman that can’t shoot for shit (popping a cap in the ceiling and another one in her own foot), and more than a few scam artists. If you’d like to end up on your own two feet (as opposed to having your feet up on a hospital bed), you’d better watch out for the banana pudding when you’re around this crew. You might want to take your job a bit more seriously, and you’d better walk around with a smile in this town, or you just might find yourself outside the glass doors looking in.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should probably mention I sent a manuscript to Henery Press approximately two weeks ago. Which means in four more weeks, I’ll receive a polite but firm rejection via email, and in four weeks and a day, Henery Press will have forgotten who the hell I am. Just so you know.

Gretchen Archer knows how to make a reader laugh out loud. I loved DOUBLE WHAMMY, but I think DOUBLE DIP is my favorite in this series to date, and I was so excited to have a chance at an early read.

A slot tournament leads Davis Way down a trail of missing old folks and money that runs right to a megachurch (with a great name). Davis and her new partner are hot on the heels of the crooks at work, while both of them juggle problematic home lives. This book is chock full of shining, snappy one-liners and the kind of zany situations sure to become Archer's trademark. All that, combined with a sweet romance that carries over from the first book, adds up to make DOUBLE DIP a pure pleasure to read.

I love, love, loved getting to go back to the Bellissimo, and learning more about Davis and her family, and I can't wait for the third in the series. Gretchen, write faster. The rest of you, go preorder DOUBLE DIP. You can thank me in January.

Loved it! The humor, the characters, the setting are all winners. I can't wait to get into the next one.

There were a small few editing faux pas, but what actually stopped me from giving five stars was what I perceived as an unfinished story line. Could be I missed the resolution to that particular line, and may go back through the last couple chapters or so to see if I did. Or it could be wrapped up in the next installment.

At any rate, I still loved this one.

I read Davis Way's first adventure, Double Whammy, and thoroughly enjoyed it. When I saw the sequel on Net Galley, I could not wait to read it.

The book did not disappoint. A lighthearted, madcap mystery that definitely entertains. Davis and her antics with her ex-ex-husband and dysfunctional family, as well as being stand-in for her boss's wife, makes for a fun and delightful story.

Gretchen Archer again proves her talents for serpentine, fast-paced adventures with Double Dip, the second Davis Way caper. As in Double Whammy, Davis Way is still working at the Bellissimo Casino as body double for the casino owner's wife, Bianca (who makes Cruella DeVille look like Mary Poppins), and as secret casino security agent, tasked with hunting out fraud and vice within the casino. Davis is also still besotted with her lawyer love Bradley Cole, although the honeymoon period has waned and they seem to be heading for a rough patch. However, Davis has no time for fixing things with Bradley Cole (who is just as busy) because the story immediately dives into Bianca troubles, a missing person, and a casino caper which quickly jackknifes into a bigger-than-casino mystery. Twists and turns abound. So do broken hearts.

I'm a huge fan of Archer's humor. Love the snappy pops and cracks to Davis's thoughts and dialogue. You are forced to pay attention in these stories, no drifting along, because words are not wasted when Archer's writing. I continue to compare her to Carl Hiaasen, of whom I'm also a fan. However, Archer's first person point-of-view makes her struggles more real. I loved the romance problems between Davis and Bradley Cole that continued to pile up in the story. I love that Davis will not just wear her heart on her sleeve, she'll tattoo it on her arm for Bradley Cole.

Well Ladies and Gentlemen, she's done it again; Gretchen Archer has written another breathtaking, heart wrenching, hilarious adventure! Let me say by page 7 she had me floored....by page 97 she had me in tears! I've never read anything quite like this story in my life!!!! First of all I love Bradley Cole....regardless of what I said about being mad at him during the book...I officially love him!!! And I can't wait to begin reading the next Crime Caper novel that Davis Way and Bradley Cole star in!
Read this book series, you will not be sorry!!!! It's a young adult novel for anyone 15 to 105!!!! Honestly she captures the south perfectly, and never overdramatizes anything (seriously people, drama is serious in the south!)

These books are fun, even if some of the things that happen seem crazy.

Davis is told to join a slot tournament and keep an eye on an old lady who seems sketchy and then the boss's wife shows up bleeding from a gunshot wound to her foot and her assistant missing. While Davis and Fantasy are working on this, Bradley is having a crisis with a lawsuit claiming the casino is harming employees by allowing smoking - so they don't have any time to see each other. And Eddie keeps popping up and causing trouble.

Davis was pregnant and before she told anyone, ends up in the hospital after being poisoned. Turns out a "church" is imprisoning seniors with money and collecting from health insurance as well. Bradley proposes at the end

Gretchen Archer has created a terrific series. Davis Way is a great protagonist who manages to get herself in hilarious situations. Double Dip is a great read with several surprises thrown in. Great storytelling that builds the characters, gives them great dimensions, and Davis' good intentions comes out every time.

This is a follow up to Double Whammy, the first book in the series. Davis Way is back. And though there have been some changes in the way her job works and who she works with (due to spoilery things that happen in Double Whammy), things have not slowed down in the least. I am so glad that I got both books 1 & 2 from the author for a review together. It made it super easy to dive right into this book.

The story starts off a few months after the close of events of book one. Davis is settling into her new job(s) at the casino and life is looking pretty good. Until the first slot-tournament of the season. Things start to go wrong almost immediately. Luckily Davis has her friends and family to call on to help her sort things out. As with the first book, there are plenty of crazy jobs, costume changes and odd characters around.

I really liked that we are still learning about Davis. It seems that the more we learn, the more there is to learn. Her family and their complex temperaments collide and mix to constantly form new configurations. Plus the author hasn't seemed to shy away from any topics yet. I refuse to list the multitude of subject matter, since I really don't want to give away any spoilers. Let's just say that I can see Davis very much as a real person with the problems that real people face every single day. The ending was a bit of a surprise, pleasantly surprised. From the way the setup was, I was expecting something a bit different. This book kept me on my toes trying to figure out what exactly was going on. This was another 5 star read for me.

Gretchen Archer crafts another page-turner with Double Dip. We travel back to the Bellissimo Casino and its cast of delightful characters, who you’ll love spending another book with.

I’m a northerner, but I love the details of Davis’ family and childhood in Pine Apple, Alabama, and her daily life in Biloxi, Mississippi.

I couldn’t put it down and finished the last 200 pages in a day.

Ms. Archer creates a compelling, layered mystery and has a knack for providing enough details to make it realistic without bogging the reader down. I am in awe of Davis’ hacking moments.

The church and the elderly were an unexpected but perfect tie-in to the Bellissimo. It’s pure pleasure to watch Davis pretend to be Mrs. Saunders at events. Davis accidentally taking Granny to the church was a laugh-out-loud roadtrip.

I love Ms. Archer’s voice. Her unique asides in parentheses and her fast humor are destined to be a trademark.

The title is very fitting and the double entendre of Double Dip will become clear by the end of the book.

Fantasy is a great addition to Davis’ team at the Bellissimo. As is Cowboy. I look forward to book 3!

3.75 Double Dipping stars. This one is even more hilarious than the first. All of the major players were introduced in Double Whammy and they're off and running in Double Dip. Did I actually laugh out loud? Maybe. A time or two. Did I laugh inside? Oh, yeah. Often. I'm not sure which is the funniest, the actual dialog, (Davis' inner thoughts), or the situations these people find themselves in. It's mostly Davis, but Bradley, Granny, and Eddie have their fair share of "situations."

Davis has settled into her super secret spy job and her job as Bianca Sanders' body double. She hasn't fully decided which is more challenging. Well, that's not true, she definitely knows which is harder. She has also settled into her relationship with Bradley Cole. They are both dedicated, 110%, to their jobs and they are very understanding of the other when the job calls. That is until both jobs call at the same time. Can they hold it together when they're both on duty at the same time with the same intensity? Do they really have the trust that is needed in a solid relationship? Will Eddie ever go away???

Double Dip answers all those questions and so many more. The characters are even quirkier in this one and everything is cranked up a notch or two.

So much action, family drama and love drama its hard to handle. I spent half this book crying and I never cry when I read books.

I finished Double Dip a few days and will be posting my reviews tonight after I recover. It takes a very special book to put me through the agony and tears that this book has brought me through! In a few days or maybe a week I am going to reread it I know I missed things because I became so heavily invested in the story. Anyway what I wanted to say is wonderful job and I can't wait for the next book!!! I sent this to the author to let her know what a great job she did.

I love Davis, Bradley and all their co-workers, family and friends. This author writes so well that you feel like this is actually happening to you. I am not going to give anything away, just have a Kleenex handy because you are going to need it. Oh and lock up your guns and Tasers because you are going to want to use them before you finish this book!!!

I am giving this book 5 stars only because that's all I can give it, it deserves more!!!!

I actually would give it a 4 1/2 star. If you want non-stop, this book has it. Davis is pulled in so many different directions, between her love life struggling, a scam, a shooting, being a body double, and family things keep moving along. Davis is an interesting complex character, while struggling with things like her ex-ex husband (and I started finding him constantly popping up annoying, the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, a little overmuch for me) and being sort of clueless with some things she shows absolute brilliance in finding scammers, hacking and searching for clues in general. I had many moments of laughing out loud, especially with Davis' thoughts to herself. I love her granny, and her relationship with her co-workers. The mysteries, have plenty of twists and turns, and there is more than one mystery going on. A very fun read.

There are magical-realism authors that can spin a fine web or fantasy - making you believe a little bit of magic, and then a bit more - until you find yourself believing in a whole other fantastic realm. They do so subtly, slowly and skillfully. Writers like Hoffman and Atwood come to mind. However, writing wacky and mad-cap stories that enthrall are far more difficult. It is the rare writer that can make you not only believe in, but root for, the loony one-eyed former governor with shotgun shells in his hair, the psychopath in pink cadillac or the fat woman in poison green spandex looking for her giraffe without making the reader throw the book down, crying "that's crap!" Archer's Davis Way, casino security staff and double for the boss's hideous wife, are enthralling and engrossing. Like Evanovich, Dorsey or Hiaasen at their finest, you know it is all ludicrous. But SUCH ludicrous fun you just want to read more.

The best and worst job. Not being a gambler or Southerner has not diminished my enjoyment of this series. Gretchen Archer keeps me smiling from the first page to the last. The nicknames and parenthetical remarks add to the fun. I received an ARC for my honest review. I am eagerly awaiting the third installment of this series, (Sure hope there is one.) but this book hasn't even been published yet. Go read DOUBLE WHAMMY in the meantime.

MY SYNOPSIS

Double Dip takes reins from Double Whammy to tell the story of Davis Way’s mysterious/romantic/hilarious/undercover life. If you were Davis Way, here are a few pointers to begin with your (messed-up) life:


1. You are on the security force of a Casino, sort of a spy on the team.


2. You are not easily ruffled by theft, murder, shooting because that’s what you combat on a daily basis.


3. You are the splitting image of your boss’ wife (if you coat an additional heavy layer of foundation and change your hair color) and that makes her your boss too.


4. Your relationship with your boyfriend is on the rocks because your shithead ex-ex husband is always in the picture.


5. You might be pregnant so you would want to tone down on all the action stunts… only if you have convinced yourself enough there might be a due date.


So now that we are settled on your persona, let’s brief you on your mission. One, your boss’ wife has fired her Personal Assistant, I mean, really fired her with a gun and she’s missing. No body, no trace of the last bullet, nothing and she wants a new P.A, even. It’s your duty to find her a new one, find her old one, make sure the old one is alive and probably keep the new one from being shot. Two, there’s a mystery old lady signing into a lot of competitions on the slots in your casino, and your boss, No Hair, wants you to be in charge of ruining what might be the happiest moments in the life of this senior citizen. You have to investigate on her in order to spoil her fun. But quit with the guilt trip, you are not alone on this, your partner, Fantasy, will be there to help. Three, you and your man are moving into a new, big space to cater for your grandmother’s reluctance to give you (two) some much needed privacy. And you must make this a positive move for the two of you, indicating a promising future, but if only your man wouldn’t arrive every time to see you in a very compromising (as well as complicated) position with your ratty ex-ex husband. Four, you haven’t told your boyfriend you are pregnant (because you haven’t told yourself you are pregnant), get it over with. Five, on the case of the old woman, during an undercover mission as one of the casino players, you pass out in the casino (Google symptoms of anemia associated with pregnancy) only to be caught by the casino’s Mr. Microphone, the slovenliest emcee alive. He wants you, you can refuse him, but your boss gives you no chance to, so date him. Six, your boss is holding out info from you, find out. Seven, a man-stealer/an almost-home wrecker wants to dig her claws into your man. No, I mean literally dig her claws into your man, stop her before she gets him. Eight, as if I haven’t briefed you enough and you are really exhausted by now from all your personal problems (your mother, your sister, your ex-ex’s mother), your boss’ wife wants you to be in charge of all her social activities. No, I mean really be in charge, take over her, become her double. All the charity events to make fashion statements and good public impressions are your duty, she might even demand you to get a boob job considering she’s contemplating one. Everything in outfits that barely cover your ass or your boobs or your every inch of skin, because she says so, and you might want to lay low on the carbs else you would get fired. Goodbye blueberry pie and Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream. Welcome your new life…

MY REVIEW

In my life, there are three authors of one chick-lit sub-genre I’ve put on a pedestal. Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum series), Sarah Strohmeyer (Bubbles Yablonsky series) and now, Gretchen Archer for Davis Way Crime Caper series (applause, applause), so even if I end now, my review looks just complete.


The first thing that makes this book deserve a star, is Davis Way. I simply wanted to pull her out for a lunch date (mostly to force her ingest something for the baby she was carrying). Like all the other leads of my favorite, favorite series, she’s independent (one thing that draws me to a woman), she’s sassy, she’s sexy. We all want to read books about chick-lit heroines who make us feel secure, that no matter how the plot is twisted and turned they’d emerge victors (with perhaps a bullet wound to make them look hotter).──★


I like authors who take a topic we’d all run away from and make it look chic. We might not relate to the lead girl’s current dilemma , but sometimes reading a book that makes you feel the hottest accessory to finish off your outfit are red Manolo Blahniks and a holster (in case you can’t get licensing done quickly), is just worth it.──★★


I’m a fan of humor. So to make your book a really laugh-out-loud number is so sinister an attempt to give your book my ultimate rating score. This book was high-larious, hit my head against the bed post on one occasion. Davis’ voice is a plus, very funny, very lighthearted. It’s these books that make me wish everyone would stop using the term chick-lit loosely. We all know if it isn’t humorous (as Double Dip) it should be mama-lit. This is one of those books that make you crack a rib in the face of your toughest, lowest moments.★★★


The characters in this book added to this book’s humor and would make anyone have a blast. From Fantasy──for we all need a partner who would dive into a dumpster, for us, to retrieve a dead body; Bianca──’cause we all don’t need a boss who might shoot a hole through us right when we go against her orders (for a boob job); Meredith──sometimes reluctant sisters who would just take charge for whenever we have to move and our job gives us no time to organize, are important; Granny Dee──nothing like a grandma who loves the slots, speaks like a narcissistic bitch but you know if she didn’t have an ear problem she’d actually whisper to sound like normal people do when whispering; Bea──an ex-ex mother-in-law might always come in handy in case you do not want to submit your own grandmother for a makeover and an undercover mission; No Hair──we need a boss who is annoying, yet adorable but wished he had a strand of hair, even if it fell from someone’s onto his; Bradley Cole──oh, who we’d kill to get a boyfriend who’d get back with us when caught looking up from our ex-ex husband’s crotch; Eddie──ugh, who would help get rid of the ex-ex husband. These and so many other characters I fell in love with, Mr. Microphone, Davis’ Mother, Cyril, Baylor/Cowboy──★★★★


This novel’s plot is a masterpiece. I like that Gretchen starves you then hits you in the face with the hot towel right when you think things are getting too fast for you to catch up. Perfect.──★★★★★

I recommend this to anyone who wants to read a book in their Manolo Blahniks holding onto their holster on their thigh. Anyone who wants chick-lit with mystery, fun and suspense. Anyone who loves the big two, Janet Evanovich, Sarah Strohmeyer should get this. And if you want a book that you can get a follow up on, a chic series you want to keep up with, and a heroine you want to keep seeing, get Double Dip(ped).

It’s Davis Way’s first slot-tournament season. And it may be her last. Stephanie Plum, Davis Way can sure give you a run for your money!

In this second book of the Davis Way Crime Capers, the story is never dull. Davis is still working undercover for the Casino as well as standing in for Bianca Sanders for public appearances. The story starts off with a bang when they hears shots and when reaching the Sanders’ offices, they find Bianca shot and bleeding. From there the adventure ratchets up. Davis and Bradley are still together and they move into an upscale new condo. While he is out of town, ex-ex-husband Eddie shows up and is staying at the condo while her sister redecorates and she stays at the Casino with her granny. When Bradley arrives back home unexpectantly, he sees Eddie and storms out. That is when Davis starts fainting at just about anything and constantly feels sick. While Davis, Fantasy and No-Hair (Jeremy) are trying to solve the newest problem at the casino, Davis is running a slots tournament pretending to be Bianca, she is trying to salvage her relationship with Bradley, help him as he is dealing with lawsuits and deal with problems from home.

The adventure and laughs never quit. I love Davis, she seems to step into one problem after another. She has a nose for clues and finding solutions, although not always legally. Her sidekick, Fantasy, keeps her in line and they play off one another quite nicely. No-Hair, puts up with their escapades as long as they get the job done. Another great addition to the Davis Way series. On to the next book. I definitely recommend this one to anyone who enjoys a humorous cozy.

HOLY MOLY WHAT AN ENTERTAINING BOOK!!!!!!

I absolutely loved this book! It has everything! I laughed and laughed and laughed some more!!! The characters in the story are great! They are so enchanting with their wacky personalities! I really enjoy the way the author would put in so many hilariously quirky "asides" that you have to be paying attention to catch. I found myself going back and rereading some parts they were so funny! Add to that some really good mysteries that were cleverly convoluted but with enough clues to keep you riveted to the story, which I was.... Add in a nicely laid out romance with a hunky hero and you have the perfect book!!!!!! Highly recommend this book and author it was a real hoot!!!!😁😁😁😁😁

Another good continuation in the Davis Way series. Many more to go yet but so far I have enjoyed reading this book set. I have only been inside a casino a few times but enjoy the description of Davis workplace. The frantic energy sounds overwhelming but seems to suit Davis and her coworkers. I have a new appreciation for the folks who work in these places and the effort it takes to keep it running. Davis and Fantasy are modern women hero’s who fight to solve the mysteries they come across and right the wrongs to others. They are strong, smart and capable and I will keep reading because of that.

A fun action packed read.
Once again Davis has to fight to maintain her own life while being the body double for Bianca Sanders who has volunteered to be the hostess of the high roller slot tournament. One family crisis after another tugs at Davis Way, and her love life is a mess. Things heat up when people turn out to not be who they say they are and big winners at the tournament are disappearing.

Book #2 is another fun, fast paced read! Davis Way works as an undercover spy at a big, fancy casino, the Bellisimo. A popular casino emcee ' s life is cut short. Who did it and why? Davis has her hands full with her boyfriend, Bradley Cole, who is a busy lawyer. Davis has to go to events for her boss,Bianca, and impersonate Bianca. Plus there are problems at the casino. This is an awesome book & series. There is humor, friendship, romance, and a cozy mystery. The ending was a bit concise especially after all of the tournament detail, but it is such a great read! Well worth it!
