I'm Michael Grath. I'll admit I was elected to Congress on my Republican family history. I was out to make a name for myself, until I met Jessie Clark, a spitfire Democrat.
She'd be my nemesis, if I could just stop thinking about her. We've got nothing and everything in common, but our past divides us. She made one choice; I made another, and we can't reconcile the two because it's an issue that divides America as well.

My Michael and Jessie:
Michael and Jessie. Loyal successful Republican and fierce determined Democrat. Lethal enemies in Congress, incredibly attracted to each other in private. Complete opposites on the field, soul mates behind the closed doors. Would they risk their carriers for possible love affair?
I have to admit that political movies are not my thing. But I really like reading books with political background. Mary Whitney succeeded in making this otherwise boring topic look appealing and managed to maintain romance "status" of this novel without a problem.
I was surprised that beside playful teasing and romantic anticipation, this book focuses on quite serious topics like abortion poitics, health care and school funding. Topics, that majority of authors try to stay clear from. It was a nice change from all those "light" romance stories. All those heated discussions between Michael and Jessie were real fun to read.
The only thing I wished for through out the whole book was more relationship angst. All that teasing and flirting and fighting was asking for something really angsty to happen, but it never came. Low on angst, high on smart discussions, I definitely enjoyed this novel!

I really enjoyed this book. Mary's writing is always elegant, laced with a wry humour, and it kept my eyes glued to the page. I loved the way she made both Jessie and Michael sympathetic characters despite their political differences, and the ups and downs that came with their relationship were well-written and believable. I also loved getting an insight into the machinery of government, as both Jessie and Michael worked hard in their jobs, representing their districts. An all-round great read!

As a brit, my entire knowledge base for US politics is based on The West Wing (and even then I was watching Rob Lowe most of the time) so I feel like I've learned a whole lot more about US politics by reading this.
Jessie is a newly elected Congresswoman and Michael a newly elected congressman, but for opposing parties. To make matters worse, Michael is in the middle of an ugly divorce, he's Catholic and from a wealthy family so all of that along with his Republican politics means he can't be seen to be dating.
This was a slow burn romance that seemed very realistic, from their initial uncertainties over acting on their attraction, the their concerns over their opposing political ideologies. It was narrated in alternate fp from both of them, with a couple of additional povs from others thrown in along the way to help the story along.
I enjoyed this, it was different and intelligent but the long political arguments bogged down the flow of the story and made it slow going at times. I can see why it was there, but I think less detailed debate and more clues about the chemistry between the two of them would have held my interest for longer. I wasn't convinced until 40% that they even had a spark and even then they were so damn sensible all the time. I didn't really get a power/influence vibe from either of them which is a pity because as the On the Record series has proven, a powerful, alpha Senator makes an irresistible subject for a story.
This is a complete story and worth a read if you're interested in the inner workings of US politics but while it had it's sweet moments, I've read more convincing romances than this.

Mary Whitney has a knack for writing political romance stories that make me dread getting to the last page because then the fun is over. Compromising Positions was one of those books.
I fell in love with Michael Grath and Jessica (Jessie) Clark. Despite being brilliant (because they truly both were), they were two down to earth, awkward, nerdy, beautiful people who were trying to navigate their way through their freshman year in Congress. Neither one expect to find love, but they did. That's not to say they didn't have obstacles. Party differences (he a Republican and she a Democrat), differing opinions on a variety of topics and Michael's attempt to end a complicated relationship all play a role in their blossoming romance.
There was something about Michael and Jessie that made them irresistible, to me, as a reader. No matter what situation either of them found themselves, I found myself laughing with them or hoping they could find a way to fix whatever issue they may have caused. Mary Whitney made these characters very likable, very down-to-earth and flawed just like the rest of us. It was an absolute pleasure to follow this couple as they weaved their way through Washington but somehow carving out the time to build a solid relationship.
If you haven't read a Mary Whitney book before, definitely pick this one up. You'll love Michael and Jessie.

Oh how I love a political romance story. I am a political girl and I will say it again and again, nothing is sexier to me than a man in political power. My partner in crime, Laurie, had been telling me for a while to read Compromising Positions by Mary Whitney and it took a trip to DC and an eleven hour car ride for me to finally pick it up, and I will have to say I have fallen in love with this story.
First off, I want to let you know, Mary Whitney is an educated writer. She knows her politics and issues and it is so evident in the pages of this book. If you love the political arena, then this book is right up your alley. I fell in love with Republican Representative Michael Grath from the very start. He isn’t your typical Alpha male…he is a man of character…a man of integrity….and a man you would be proud to bring home to Mama. Michael is going through a nasty divorce but finds himself falling for another freshman Representative. The only problem…Jessie Clark, his love interest, is a Democrat.
If you are not up on your politics, let me tell you Democrats and Republicans are not supposed to fall in love, and Mary Whitney wrote this struggle brilliantly. You know going into this that there is going to be conflict and I was so curious how she was going to reconcile it between these two extremely passionate Representatives who sit on completely different sides of the political fence. I was worried for a minute that she was going to make one of them cave in an way that would not be acceptable to me; because I don’t care how good the sex is or how much you are in love, you don’t throw out your convictions, beliefs or your constituents votes on an important issue just to appease your lover. But fear not, because Mary Whitney reconciled their dilemma in an extremely honest way.
One of my favorite aspects of this book were the supporting characters. Michael and Jessie were so blessed with friends and family who gave them the best advice and support anyone could ask for. I loved the wisdom shared by their parents. The actions the two Representatives took was never impulsive, but true to what I hope people in their position would take.
I was so caught up in the realness of these two characters. They weren’t over the top with anything and I appreciated the way their emotions were written. The pace of the book was great and there was just enough angst in it to keep me on my toes. I truly loved this story and have now found another author that I am dying to read more of. Mary Whitney definitely won my vote as an amazing writer. My only disappointment about Compromising Positions is that it is a standalone I won’t get more of Michael Grath!

Heading into 2014 , I've been reading a few Contemporary New Adult Romances and it seems that this may be the trend for the upcoming year. With this book, at first I thought it might be a case of the TV show "Ground Floor" romance going-on's as it talked about them coming from two different worlds and how they shouldn't be together. What it turns out to be is that they are both opposing parties in the Elections with Michael being a Republican and Jessie being a Democrat. Despite their feelings for each other, can they stay apart in defense of their commitments to their countries in Parliament or will the pair work out an agreement to date but still support their own parties ?? What will happen though when it comes to the Abortion bill and the two are on opposite sides of the fence and that this is the one thing in Congress , that they are so strongly passionate about ? Will this be the test their relationship needs to see if they can work it out or will they realise that their lives are headed different ways and that sometimes in relationships , you can't unfortunately make compromises and some relationships aren't destined to work ?

I'm a huge fan of Mary Whitney's and when I heard she was releasing a new book I couldn't wait to read it.
Well I just finished and Mary Whitney has delivered another wonderful heartfelt read, loved Compromising Positions.
Compromising Positions is a story about two people from opposite political sides falling in love and struggling to find a balance between their work life and private life and still being able to be a supportive partner/boyfriend/girlfriend.
Could Michael and Jessie find this balance and still do the job they've been elected to do?
Both Michael Garth and Jessie Clark are likable and very relatable characters. I loved seeing them banter about each others political party :)
They become good friends who in time fall deeply in love... sigh
Once again Mary Whitney has given us a heartwarming love story that will touch your heart and leave you with a smile on your face, I highly recommend you read it.
Looking forward to reading more from Mary in the near future.

The author is a democrat...
thats pretty much the only thing that you infer from this book...
its a highly potent method of wasting time... the plot is entirely plotless... take everything that is written as a blurb, mix it with a couple of cliched romance scenes... a few dialogues.. and a happy ending and you might as well have read the whole book..
i wont give it one star because i donot outrightly hate it.. so two stars and even THAT is generousity...
Verdict: forget it...

So I have a deep love for MWhit. She's awesome and her books her awesome. But I also feel like because she's lived in DC and worked in politics her political romances are some of the best around.
In the interest of full disclosure- I have been very invested in this book since I found out it was being written and I was a beta reader for this story. So it definitely has a special place in my heart.
This book is definitely a political romance but I think that non-political junkies can still appreciate it. Michael is a sexy Republican Congressman who votes with his party, some from a conservative Catholic background and is super hot.
So naturally I pictured him as the hottest man on Capitol Hill-
Aaron Shock- you and I may never be on the same page politically but I would definitely go a few rounds with you in the sack.
But now my heart belongs to a different Republican (words I never thought I would say)- in one Michael Grath.
On the other side of the aisle you have Jessie Clark. A liberal, democrat Congresswoman who is basically the opposite of Michael in every way.
Naturally they are totally drawn to each other and it's so damn hot I can't stand it.
There may or may not be an incredibly hot scene in one of their Congressional offices. And I can neither confirm or deny having a similar experience myself that might have made that scene even hotter in my head.
Underneath the hot sex and the fighting of feelings and all of that fun stuff- there is a GREAT story line. It's the thing that takes MWhit from good writer to a great writer.
Jessie and Michael find themselves fighting for both their jobs and their love when a bill comes to the floor to defund Planned Parenthood. Jessie is very strongly pro-choice and Michael is personally not as invested in the fight but usually votes with his party and on the side of his religious beliefs. It is this issue that shakes their relationship to the core. Even through they were able to work together previously, this issue is such a heated debate that it really becomes a turning point for the couple.
MWhit does a magnificent job of taking a very touchy subject and making it very comfortable for the reader- no matter what side you fall on.
And if you aren't a political person- don't worry. You can still enjoy this book. It is, at it's core, a story about two people who have to work through all of their differences and baggage to make love work. And who doesn't like that?
I cannot recommend this book enough. If you want a well written book with plenty of steam but a story line that is realistic and interesting the entire way through- you will want to pick this one up!!

This was my first time reading a book about politics, but none the less, I liked the book. Even though I gave it 3 out 5. I wanted more, what happened with Michael and Jessie, I will not say what I want to know, because I do not want to spoil it for anyone. It was nice to read the story from Michael and Jessie’s POV(I did love the name of Jessie's cat, Harry Potters will understand!), because not only we see the problem from one person, we got to see it from both of them. Even though I am not big in politics, I found myself relating a little bit to Michael and Jessie. It was nice to see an author write about issues that are really going on right now in the world, and not afraid to give opinions on each side of the situation.
This book really shows that you can become friends or date someone that may not have the same views as you, and that it’s okay. Again, I will say that I did like this book, there was some romance, funny. You cannot help but falling for Michael, he is like all the American guy. He can have fun, but also be serious when he needs too. If he really cares about something, he will stick up for that thing, and doesn’t care what other people think(you will know what I mean when you read the book lol ). Jessie, rocks! She is not afraid to stand up for her beliefs, she works in the “world” where guys think they “rule”, I give her credit for standing her grounds, she is a smart woman, doesn’t take crap from anyone.
One last thing, when this book comes out, go buy a copy and enjoy this book!

I couldn't put this book down. Ms. Whitney has done it again with a irresistible fun loving book. The characters are lovable and real. Michael the republican who is a great speaker but shy and introverted. More he wishes to have his life kept quiet. Although he wants this a mistake in his past where he was trying to do the right thing comes back to bite him and threaten to make his world public. At the same time this kind man meets Jessie the exuberant and passionate democrat from arizona. She speaks her mind and does shy away from things. Her assistant is protective of her and her assistant's husband is a teddy bear.
the story thought focuses on Michael and Jessie. How they work together, become friends and have a attraction for one another. both are afraid to act on it. Michael gets bold though and it turns out to be wonderful until they are forced to face one another over a bill. A bill that Jessie is passionate about and he is towing the party line. For her the bill is personal for him it is one in which he is confused but does not want to lose Jessie over. As times wears on neither will compromise.
Two stubborn people in a impossible situation trying to follow their hearts and not lose each other and who they are in the process. As the time comes for the bill to come forth the two are under pressure. Michael becomes the one in charge of the proceedings and so that helps him not talk up against Jessie. This helps immensely so does Jessie finally talking out about the bill and her relationship with Michael and the way he will vote. This eases the pressure alot.
The HEA is wonderful to see. Each book of Ms. Whitney's I have read have been a joy to read and ones I cannot put down. they draw on emotions and tug at the heart strings and this one is no different.

This is so Good! and what I expect to read a novel about the Politics. Compromising Positions is exactly Politic Romance which have excellent politic background and I mean that, not just the book that the characters are politicians, but don't have or have very few politic element in the plot.
I got to learn a lot about US politics and really enjoyed them. Michael and Jessie, they are on opposite sides in the Congress. Republican and Democrat. They have different beliefs, experience life, and attitude. I really enjoyed the debate between these two about the legislation *abortion*, I learn the new view and also learn to respect the other's opinion.
This book is told from multiple point of view in first person POV. especially told from Michael and Jessie, and a little told from the other in the last past which I think is good. I will definitely check the other book of the author out since I still want to read and enjoy Politic Romance more..

Mary Whitney is not a new author for me, I’ve been following her for a while now and I love everything she has written and this book is no different. I’m not into politics at all, I even live in a different country and even thought I wouldn’t normally read anything political related, Mary has proved me wrong and made me read anything she writes.
I love how the relationship between Michael and Jessie was built. The difficulties a couple can have with different point of views, no matter if they are political or something else is something we find in real life everyday and made me love this book even more, all their heated discussions where so enjoyable to read.
The characters are very good built, the background and environment given in the book makes you understand where each of them stand and even understand how the politic world works. The plot is different from what you normally read in romantic novels, but this will be no exception for you that you will certainly enjoy every minute.
If you haven’t read anything Mary Whitney has written, you are missing a lot. Give her a chance and this book as well as anything else she writes will never disappoint you, you will enjoy every page and will be looking forward for more books in the future.

I have to admit the premise of a sort of political romance, had me edgy. I knew it was going to be angsty, I knew what I was in for- and yet, still I couldn’t help but read it.
I think the book ended up being a great read. The novel is clever, charming and very well-written. It has a plot that to me, was fresh and new. The writing is vivid, detailed, and filled with emotions. All the feels!!!
The book is about Michael Grath and Jessie Clark as they fall in love when they weren’t supposed to. The are from the political world, where a Republican and a Democrat shouldn't be agreeing on issues, and especially not falling in love. What I liked about this book was that it had a fun side, and didn’t seem so serious when it came to politics. The romance between the two could have had it to blow up in the press, but didn’t. Thanks to one of their friends who kept it hush hush.
Now of course, there is angst- issues that are not agreed on, and hopefully they can get over their political side and love each other.
Overall, the novel is a great read that I would definitely recommend to other readers. And if you have never read anything by Mary Whitney, I suggest you do so!

Mary Whitney is my comfort food. With Mary Whitney, I know I will get a good story, with very likable characters and just enough intensity and steam to make it enjoyable. And there will be enough drama to keep me interested.
The story takes us from the beginning of the relationship between Michael and Jessie where they initially meet, question how the other feels for the other, become friends, and then fall in love.
I loved the political banter between these two characters.
This story is not insta-love. There are a few things that are preventing this couple from immediately being able to be in a relationship. One being that Michael is going to through a messy public divorce and two, Michael is a Republican while Jessie is a Democrat. Since both of them are new to Congress they feel that they should just keep things friendly. However, after working together on a bill and getting to know each other, it is hard for them to fight their feelings.
It was a great story.

Very heavy on the clockworks of American politics and a little lighter on the romance and steam. I was reading about 2 very level headed politicians talk through their problems and have only one major spat where even the most angsty part of the book was nearly bordering on boring. I can't give this book any less stars as it was well written enough and kept me reading till the end (but still skimming through most of the political background info).
Don't expect hot steam coming from this book either. In fact it seemed like it was confusingly in 2 minds! it took a while for these 2 MC's to get it on and when they did, the detail on the cunninglingus performed was descriptive enough (especially when the word vagina is used), then the apparently amazing sex suddenly faded to black!
It wasn't all bad and I would recommend to anyone with an interest in American congressmen with a side of romance.

I was honored to be given an opportunity to read an ARC of Mary's latest work, 'Compromising Positions'.
As a political junkie, I am always excited to read a political romance and this book did not disappoint. It's a nice mix of policy and sex appeal and I enjoyed the alternating POV. I like how Mary writes her female characters as strong and self assured, and her male leads as being attracted to that quality in them.
Mary incorporates her knowledge of Washington for a nice dash of authenticity and makes it interesting, but doesn't dwell on floor debates and gavel swings. In addition, she doesn't stick to red/blue/religious stereotypes, which added a great new dimension to her characters. And you will also fall in love with the supporting characters, especially Larry.
In short, Mary's new book is a great way to spend a weekend! Fun, sexy read.

This book was about two politicians that are on opposite side of the politics. One is a Democrat and one is a Republican. It shows how having different views one policies in a public office can be trying on a relationship. They were able to work out most issues easy bit when one issues is so important that it divides them it makes them think. It was a happy ending though bit just to know what they went through to get there made me think about mine and sometimes the small things get in the way when they shouldn't.

Politics, Law, Compromises, Love, Passion, — Compromising Positions, the new Adult Romance by Mary Whitney, is a great novel that leaves the reader wanting more. This is no surprise to me, since I’m a big fan of Mary Whitney. She’s the Author of Beside Your Heart and Disclosure of the Heart, books that I truly loved.
She proves her writing talent also in Compromising Positions, which I give my thumbs up, and I encourage you to add it to your TBR list.

This is the first book that I have read by this author as well as the first politically themed romance and I must say I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed. He is a Republican, she is a Democrat and as you can imagine this made for some interesting obstacles to say the least. Compromising Positions is a humorously warming read and th characters of Michael and Jessie were beautifully written and you can’t help but cheer them on. Go one-click now and get to know Michael and Jessie as they navigate through hardships and political differences in an effort to build a loving and long lasting relationship.

It was fun to read a love story with a different agenda and built in conflict of interests. Two members of Congress, on Republican and one Democrat falling in love and working out their differences in politics and looking beyond political agendas to the core values of the other to find someone they could love and build a future with is an excellent story plot. The fun part of reading it was how they worked on their differences.
The romantic setting and the happy ending made Compromising Positions a great romance.

Cute story and great writing! I won't lie there is nothing special about this book. You can see everything coming before it comes but you still smile when you read about it. I'm confused on what happened with Trish and Larry..I get that they were secondary characters but they just disappeared the last 85% of the book
This is a good book to read when you are looking for something light and fluffy. You won't be disappointed with the writing.

First let me say that I LOVE YOU MARY!!! I enjoyed this book more than anything I have read in a LONG time. You never cease to amaze me. The story was so all encompassing. I was so involved that I just couldn't put it down. Took my kindle to work with me for the first time ever. Great romance with just a little spicy something something. Definitely a 5 plus stars read!

Loved this! Finally found a good one after a reading rut.
This one is beautifully written, no angst, sweet, with lovable, thinking adults as MCs and support characters. I don't know much about the workings of Congress so this book is special in that it takes one into that world in a light and enjoyable way.
The narration of the story was 5 stars.

The story was cute and easy to get into. The characters were likeable, if not that memorable. However, I didn't like the book. The romance just didn't feel real to me. The author tried conveying the characters' love for each other through their interactions and the struggles they overcame, but it just felt too fabricated and forced for me.
