This is the last of the guidebooks I picked up on a trip to London last month. St. Paul's was vast and impressive, yet was somewhat understated in its ornamentation compared to other churches visited on this trip (Westminster Abbey, St. Francis' basilica in Assisi, St. Peter's in Rome). I used the audio guide for my visit to the cathedral, and stuck the guidebook in my backpack to read at leisure once I was home. The guidebook provides a concise history of the cathedral site and the building itself through its many renovations and updates, then takes the reader through the features and memorials of the nave, dome, transepts and quire aisles, the quire, the chapels, and the exterior and churchyard. So much history is packed into this soaring space. The climb up many spiral staircases to the viewing platform atop the dome yielded impressive views of the Thames river and the City of London. If you visit the cathedral, definitely make the climb. Five out of five stars.
I visited this cathedral in 2011. It was amazing and also was one of the few in England that allowed you to take a picture of famous people buried there.
A great guide to help remember your visit to St. Paul's, especially since you can not take picture inside the cathedral. I wish that the guide had a few picture of the stairs inside of the dome.
