When a Texas gal punches a prince instead of curtsying, you know this isn't your grandmother's fairy tale.
Taking the bull by the horns is child's play compared to ruling Malveaux. Yet here I am, a Texas girl turned princess, swapping tacos for a tiara.
Then I meet Europe’s most eligible bachelor, the irritatingly handsome Prince Alexander, and accidentally deck him instead of curtsying.
Oops.
I’d feel bad if he wasn’t such a self-satisfied jerk.
Now, I'm racing against a royal clock that ticks with the urgency of a preening peacock, trying not to let down my newfound country or my own wild heart. Alexander? He's a walking contradiction, with a smirk that heats my blood and eyes that tell tales of a depth I didn't expect.
Decisions aren't exactly my rodeo, but this time, my choice could cost me my new crown—or lead to a love story that rewrites my happily ever after.
Will this Texas girl rise to the royal challenge, or is this one fairytale destined to end with the slipper never found?
The Princess Diaries meets The Hating Game in this in this dizzyingly romantic modern royal romcom for grown-ups, where an American girl's unexpected ascent to royalty collides with a fiery romance with a hot neighboring prince. The Backup Princess is a closed-door romance with all the sizzle but without the spice, and a guaranteed happily ever after. It’s Book 1 in the brand new series, Royally Kissed.

This was a sweet story with such fun Princess Diaries vibes! I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Maddie, an ordinary girl from Texas, is now next-in-line for the throne of Malveaux after her uncle decides to abdicate. She travels to Malveaux and begins training as a princess. She has some funny and awkward moments in the process, one of the biggest is meeting Prince Alexander, and accidentally punching him in the nose.
Prince Alexander has a reputation as being a partying playboy. When he comes off as arrogant and rude, Maddie‘s not so sorry she punched him.
They both had less than flattering opinions about each other before they met. They soon realize they were judging the other one unfairly, and that there was a lot more depth, goodness, and integrity in the other person.
I adored their romance, and how they brought out the best in each other. I loved how Maddie rose to the occasion and becomes an awesome princess. I loved her cute grandparents, and so many of the secondary characters.
What I loved: Royal romance Dual POV Enemies to lovers Forced proximity Fish out of water princess Reformed bad boy prince He falls first The nicknames Cheese rolling Chloe—Maddie’s bestie Fairytale HEA
This fun and entertaining story is the first book in a new series, Royally Kissed. I’m looking forward to more royal romances and adventures!
This book truly had me giggling and kicking my feet in happiness at some of the best moments! It made me wish I was royal & it gave me so much joy. I had the BEST time. The Princess really found her way throughout the whole story.
Thank you to the publisher, author, & NetGalley for sending me this e-ARC.
A cute yet comical read, I would definitely recommend!
Alex and Maddie's story was truly something special. Starting with a hilarious meet cute that starts with a bang (quite literally, she punches him), it is wonderful to see the journey these characters embark on, both with themselves and with each other. The period where they initially disliked each other and then fell for each other was cute too.
The writing style was dual POV 1st person which was nice to get a feel of both characters. I do occasionally go for royal romance but this one was really special. I felt like I really knew the characters and became invested in their story.
I hadn't read anything from this author before and will definitely be looking out for more books she's published. This is great for anyone looking for a read that is sweet but will give them plenty of laughs. This was exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Now, I really really wanted this book to be for me but unfortunately it wasn't great but it wasn't bad either.
One thing I really enjoyed is that there wasn't a break up in the 3rd act. But... on the other hand... please for the love of everything good, give us some conflict/drama/ ANYTHING in the whole book. Otherwise it just reads bland.
The Backup Princess was attempting to give "The Princess Diaries" vibes, but I was just waiting to feel some form of connection to these characters. This unfortunately never happened. Right off the bat things pick up and you feel like you are left behind because it is written in a way that makes you feel like you should already know this information. I thought I was reading a book that was further into a series and that I was missing something. But I was surprised to see that it was the first book.
It is a very quick read and is the perfect book for a nice afternoon read. But keep in mind it is quite simple.
Also I would not recommend marketing a book as similar to the Princess Diaries when the only similarity is that an American is a European princess. I would just recommend reading the original as it has more creativity.
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
✨ royal romance ✨ he falls first ✨ enemies to lovers ✨ forced proximity
For fans of The Princess Diaries, this is a sweet story about a Texas girl that is called back to her family’s home country to serve her royal duty as next in line for the throne. She’s quirky, clumsy, and doesn’t have a poised bone in her body.
This was a fun, light hearted read that had me giggling.
📚Thank you NetGalley, Wild Lime Books and Kate O’Keeffe for the ARC of The Backup Princess.
There was so much chemistry between these two! It was practically hate at first sight for Alex and Maddie. But, I think that was what made it so much fun to watch them peel back the layers to discover their softer feelings for one another. Anyone who’s ever felt like a fish out of water can empathize with Maddie’s sudden change in circumstances. And everyone who’s ever been judged for who they were before they became a better version of themselves, will know exactly where Alex is coming from. I loved this pair so much, both when they were sniping and snarking at each other and as they were falling in love. Their families sometimes stole the show, and I can’t wait to read more about the rest of them. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Hidden Gems Books.
𓍢 ִ ໋ “it's as though i've been waiting my entire life for this one kiss. time has slowed. all that exists is her and me in this moment...”
➛ plot summary.
here's the scoop: imagine a fairy tale, but with a texas twist. when texas gal, maddie ends up decking a prince instead of curtsying, you know things are about to get interesting. suddenly, she’s not just your average texan anymore—she’s a princess. but then she meets prince alexander, europe's most eligible bachelor, and accidentally gives him a broken nose instead of a bow. whoops. he's annoyingly handsome, but also kind of a jerk. now, she’s racing against the clock, trying to navigate royal life without letting down her new country or her own wild heart.
➛ brief thoughts.
so, about “the backup princess” by kate o'keeffe... first off, the title grabbed my attention, and after checking out the synopsis, i was totally sold. it sounded like it had all the makings of a killer rom-com. but for me, it fell short of its potential. everything moves at warp speed, which made the pacing a real struggle. the plot feels scattered, and there's zero development—no character growth, no depth to the romance. honestly, i couldn't muster up any interest in the characters from the very beginning up till now. so yeah, i was pretty bored most of the time.
but hey, maybe it's just me. the story itself isn't terrible, though. the writing is fresh and breezy, with a casual tone that i really liked. it's just... i couldn't connect with any of it, you know? hopefully, it finds its audience and someone else out there falls head over heels for it!

”thank you netgalley, xpresso book tours, and the author for sending me a copy of this e-arc. opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.”
This was the first book I've read from Kate O'Keefe and definitely enjoyed it.
I love that this was a remake of the Princess Diaries but with a twist.
I loved their meet cute that started them off with a bang and I loved the banter between Alex and Maddie.
I loved that they were enemies for a little while but then they both fall pretty fast and hard for each other.
I love that Alex was there to support Maddie as she transitioned from a gal from Texas to a Princess. I love that he helped her become who she wanted to be and saw who she really was. I also love his nickname for Maddie and their first kiss!
I love that Maddie was also able to look past what everyone thought of Alex to see the man behind the mask. I love that she was so sweet and so out of her element.
I love that we got to see them together so often and that we just get to enjoy them being in love.
If you want a sweet royalty romance without that typical 3rd act breakup definitely give this one a go.
Physical Intimacy Lvl 2 Longer Non Descriptive Kisses Zero Swearing Dual 1st Person POV
I think I’ve realized why I read these romcoms and (as egotistical as it sounds) it’s because it makes me feel better about my own writing 😂 I also don’t have to think at all. The writing in this is terribly cringy. Nobody talks this way. Worse though was the slang. Did the FMC say “no cap” and “lit” to the Queen. Yes. Yes she did. Send help. There were some funny banter between the two main characters but it’s ugh. Really bad great value Princess Diaries. I will say that I did like how the conflicts resolved.

My Thoughts: I finished this at the end of last month but due to a new job, a little late on typing my review. This is the first book in a new series, Royally Kissed. This is a closed door romance that is very steamy, you do not miss the spice. This was such a sweet story that I adored. Maddie has her life in Texas with her dad and her best friend, Chloe. Let’s not forget her crush, who is the best to have a crush on. One day the men in black show up to whisk her away to Malveaux as she is the standing heir to the throne, as the uncle is abdicating. Maddie was completely unaware that her mother was a princess and gave up her royalty to have a normal life. Now the question is, will Maddie give up her normal life for a life in Malveaux. Enter Prince Alexander, whom disrupts her escape to the closet, she doesn’t know him from Adam and punches him, and then flees the scene. Later she is introduced to him and he is not so kind to her. The two families rule in close by countries and have a special relationship. Thus, Prince Alex stays in Malveaux to get to know the new princess. What develops is beyond a friendship. Will she rise up to the challenge and become heir to the throne, will she leave it all behind and return to Texas, or will she get lost in a budding relationship with Prince Alex? This follows the tropes of enemies to friends to lovers, royal romance, closed door, and forced proximity.
The story is a dual narration by Princess Maddie and Prince Alexander, in their respective perspectives. Maddie is larger than life, outgoing, sunshine, and quirky. Alex is known as a playboy, has a tough exterior, but once you get to know him, he is gooey in the middle. Maddie is definitely a fish out of water heroine, while Alex is a playboy, arrogant, and rude hero. The opposites attract really works here and their relationship is special, that still has me thinking about it after I finished the last page. The characters were developed well with depth, witty banter, chemistry, emotion, and intriguing. I instantly connected with Maddie and was rooting for her the entire book. The author’s writing style was complex, closed door, swoon-perfection, flowed well, had excellent pacing, was heartfelt, and was just beautiful, as well as brilliant. The supporting characters were stellar and really uplifted the story to another level, with Chloe, and Alex’s sisters, as well as the peacocks. There were so many scenes that stay close to my heart, the caring grandparents, cheese rolling, the children’s hospital, the meet-cute punch, Peabody, and of course, the fairytale ending. I loved how the author brings these two MCs together, gives them a different type of a fairytale HEA, and forgoes the third act breakup.
The author said it best on the GR page, this is a good balance between the Princess Diaries meets The Hating Game. I very much enjoyed this story and was sad when it ended. Indie romance authors always hold a special place in my heart, you can really tell that they pour their hearts out. Not that established romance authors do not, it just comes from a special place. One of my favorite authors puts out an amazing book that is just pure royalty. I highly recommend picking up today. Available on KU.
Thank you Net Galley and Wild Lime Books for the ARC of the book The Backup Princess by Kate O'Keeffe in exchange for my honest review. I loved this book! It was a sweet rom-com. . .very Hallmark-esque! An average girl living in Houston, Texas is abruptly thrown into the role as back up princess in Malveaux. It's a sweet story of her adjustment to this possible new life and of course the entanglement with Prince Alexander of Ledonia with his wild bachelor reputation. Their meet-cut was adorable and the banter between them is the best. It was a fun read as they got to know each other better and find out that first impressions are not always what they appear to be. I would recommend this book highly to all the sweet romance readers out there.
The Backup Princess is the start of an absolutely amazing new series. It definitely had Princess Diaries vibe which is high praise in my book with a splash of enemies to lovers, my favorite trope.
This is a clean but grown up romance and I absolutely loved it. The characters are great, it's LOL funny and it can't be missed.
It has so many of my favorite things in a romance book, PLUS PEACOCKS
This royal romance had Princess Dairies vibes and I was all for it! Maddie grew up in Texas and away from royal life so when her uncle is thinking of abdicating she is flown to Europe and starts princess lessons. Read for Dual POV, enemies to lovers, funny meet-cute, feisty FMC, reformed prince, the side characters, peacocks and the first kiss 🫠. I found myself smiling the whole time.
I absolutely love this gem by Kate O'Keefe! It is Book 1 of the her new Royally Kissed Series! I cannot wait to read the next one!
Maddie is the girl next door from Texas working customer service, swooning after her co-worker. She gets a visit at her job where she discovers that she is the Princess of a small European country called Malveaux. Maddie fist meets Prince Alexander of Ledonia (aka Prince McHottie) in a closet at the Ball announcing her as Princess. It wasn't the nicest of meetings - her fist, met his face! But that all changed as they got to really know each other.
What I loved about this book… ✨️ Great Chemistry, Great Supporting Characters ✨️The Princess Diaries vibes ✨️ Lots of laugh out loud moments ✨️ The support that these 2 MCs gave to each other and how they encouraged self growth for one another ✨️ The lesson of not judging a "book by it's cover" and not believing everything you read/see about people online, in papers, on tv.

Thank you to @kateokeefewriter for the gifted copy of this book for my honest review!
This book was a cute and fun read that will delight royal fans. It felt very similar to The Princess Diaries. As someone who loves the sub-genre of romance that is for modern royal romances, I really enjoyed this one and liked that it didn’t feel just like every other book in this sub-genre. I did think things were rushed. The conflict and solution and epilogue all happen within the last 15% of the book, so it felt very jam packed. The character development of both characters also goes 0 to 100. However, I’d definitely recommend this book to a friend looking for a fun read.
This was a fun read! With two unknown countries, it was so interesting to see how Malveaux and Ledonia were built, interacted, and eventually relied on one another. If you’re looking for a light-hearted, fish out of water, royalty read this is the one for you!

I received a complimentary copy; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I adore royal romances and The Back Up Princess was so much swoony fun! It’s my first book by Kate O’Keeffe and definitely won’t be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed this enemies to lovers romcom with its Princess Diaries vibes.
Madeline “Maddie” Josephine Turner is a Texas gal who finds herself the potential future queen of the small European country of Malveaux when her uncle Nicholas threatens to abdicate his position. Suddenly she goes from fetching coffee to being whisked away on an airplane to Malveaux to be trained as a princess. Her first few forays into the public eye are somewhat disastrous especially when she accidentally punches the future king of Ledonia, Prince Alexander Archibald George Canossa, aka Prince McHottie. The gorgeous, smug, playboy prince immediately gets under her skin and brings out all her feistiness.
Alex is tired of his reputation as a bad boy. He wants to settle down and find a woman he can share his future kingdom with. When he meets Maddie, he’s immediately intrigued. He soon goes from disdain to admiration as she tackles her new role. He finds himself falling in love and as they grow closer, he hopes to find a way for them to be together.
I loved Maddie and Alex! There was such depth to their characters and I felt like I really got to know them well. Maddie has social anxiety and tends to be a bit clumsy so her role as a princess really stretches her limits. I loved the way Alex understood the pressures and helped her flourish in her new role. I also loved the way Maddie saw beyond Alex’s playboy reputation. Their witty banter & fun flirtations were so good as they go from enemies to friends to more.
Highly recommend this fun, swoony, royal romcom! Can’t wait for the next book in the series. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided. 4-4.5 stars!
The Backup Princess was a very cute princess diaries esque whirlwind of a romance book. We meet Madeline, a regular 24 year old girl whose mom was a princess who abdicated her throne for love. Maddie is whisked away to her mother’s kingdom, Malveaux as a “backup” once her uncle decided to do the same, and thrown into Princess life. It’s there in her new princess life she meets Prince Alexander, the neighboring kingdom’s bad boy and ladies man who’s trying to reform and look for love. The two are thrown together to form political relations and they find they have a lot more in common than they realize.
I loved Maddie, she was extremely kind and thoughtful to all those around her, and funny. I hated that we never got to see more personality explored, like she wore a hoodie about books off the plane and then never touched a book in the novel. Alex was charming, but he felt very one note. He kept trying to convince people he had changed by just telling them but would continue to do the behavior he changed under the pretense that it was fake and didn’t mean anything.
My biggest complaint is that this novel doesn’t feel like the first in a series. The first few chapters were hard because it felt like there were things about the world I should already know, but I didn’t. They’re fast opening chapters that throw you straight into the world without any cushions for your fall.
The book lacks conflict. When Maddie and Alex realize what their relationship means for her title the uneasiness lasts for maybe two chapters before it is solved. There just did not feel like any real stakes in the book, even when it came to her uncle abdicating. Everyone told her she didn’t have to worry that he would sign the papers and they were right!
The characters and world were so beautiful I just left wanting more!

Thank you Kate O’Keeffe and Bookinfluencercom for the e-book copy of this book!
This book was literally The Princess Diaries in book form so if you loved those movies then you HAVE to read this book. I loved the plot about two heirs of two different European countries falling in love and what happens if that happened.
Maddie is just your regular Texan girl who works at a product company and lives her day to day life as any other regular person. But one day at work two big guys in black show up and tell her to come with them because she’s apparently the heir to the throne of a foreign European country called Malveaux after her uncle from her late mother’s side of the family has plans to abdicate the throne and Maddie is the only hope. When she gets there she meets Prince Alexander who’s the heir to the throne to Malveaux’s sister country, Ledonia and the guy she loves to dislike. The two are forced to spend time together and quickly the dislike they have for each other turns into something a little more personal and sweeter than that.
I loooooove royal romances, just something about reading about princes and princesses is just so satisfying for me and I loved Maddie and Alexander’s story. The dislike to love trope is very fun and their relationship definitely reminded me of Mia and Nicholas’s relationship in the Princess Diaries movie, so that made me even more obsessed with them. 10/10 of the angst and sexual tension!!!! And when they finally kissed? THE SPARKS.
👑 What to expect: — royal romance — two heirs fall in love — dislike to love — takes place in a dreamy european country — the princess diaries inspired — will they won’t they — lots of angst — mutual pinning
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me a free ebook in exchange for an honest review.
This one is such a fun, light-hearted read. It has all the Princess Diaries vibes and is absolutely perfect for us women who were once little girls dreaming of growing up to be princesses. Who am I kidding? I still want to be a princess even now! I love a good royal romance and Kate did so well with this one.
Maddie...a total Mia Thermopolis mood and my millennial heart was here for it. I loved witnessing Maddie come into her own and truly discover her purpose. All the Texas and pop culture references were a nice touch and I appreciated how down-to-earth this FMC was even though she was an actual princess!
Alexander...To be honest, I didn't absolutely fall for this MMC. He's just not really my type. I did, however, enjoy seeing him go from a playboy to totally besotted with Maddie. They truly are two puzzle pieces that fit together perfectly. It was also incredibly sweet how much of a hype man Alex became for Maddie.
Things I loved...Maddie's sweet relationships with Alice and Vlad, Chloe's fierce individuality and loyalty, Alex's siblings (such fun personalities), and just all the royal things that allowed me to live in a fairytale while I was reading.
I'm so excited to read Sofia's book. I think her personality is going to make it such a fun one!
When the heir to the throne of Malveaux is rumored to be abdicating, Maddie is plucked out of her quiet life in Texas to take her place as next in the line of succession. A misunderstanding during her introductory ball results in Prince Alexander of Ledonia ending up with a black eye. Pushed towards friendship due to the special relationship between their countries, Maddie and Alex are forced to spend more and more time together. As they get to know one another and leave their preconceived notions about each other behind, their feelings for each other become something they can't deny.
If you love The Princess Diaries movies, especially the sequel, I think you will enjoy The Backup Princess. The relationship between Maddie and Alex and their banter gives very similar vibes to Mia and Nicholas. The Backup Princess has a fairly quick pace, and as a result, their relationship does start to feel a bit insta-love. The side plots definitely take a back seat to the love story, and I wish we could've gotten to see more of Maddie's princess lessons and more of Alex's family. Overall, the love story is very sweet and this is a fantastic read for lovers of royal rom coms!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the eARC to review!
Royal rom-com with a zesty Texan heroine and a reformed party prince coming right up!
👸🏻 Book Review: THE BACKUP PRINCESS by Kate O’Keeffe 🫅🏻
Maddie learns that overnight she’s become next in line for the throne of Malveaux and her transition to future monarch begins immediately. This definitely has strong Princess Diary, plus some other bonus 90s rom-com movie vibes, and I loved it. I especially enjoyed the snarky news clips from royal correspondent Fabiana Fontaine interspersed between chapters.
Maddie is constantly paired with Prince Alexander of Ledonia, aka Prince McHottie. He may be known in the press as a party prince, but he claims to have put that behind him and Maddie must decide for herself who he is. Their first meeting includes Maddie punching Prince Alex in the face, so it’s safe to say that it’s not all smooth sailing.
Read THE BACKUP PRINCESS for 👑 Royal makeover 🥊 Enemies to lovers 😇 Reformed bad boy 🧀 Cheese rolling and other silly “sports” 🤠 Texas slang 🔥 Slow burn 🧁 Clean romance
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5 stars)

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
what i love about this book : 👑 royal romance 👑 dislike to lovers 👑 prince x princess 👑 a very funny meet-'ugly'. this moment is very iconiic. 👑 she's a new princess but he is there for her to help her out!!! he hold her hand when she felt ovewhelmed, being with her to practice her first speech and etcetc!! 👑 THE MOTORCYCLE RIDEEEE!! aaah when he takes her on a ride to visit places she never went to, buy her ice cream, and spend the whole day with her<333 👑 the prince's siblings!! they are so freaking funny! and im so excited to read sofia's book! 👑 the friendship between the princess with her lady in waiting and her bodyguard!! 👑 the whole both kingdoms too! those kingdoms sounds so cozy, magical, and beautiful!
* I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book that I received from HiddenGems. * This is a really sweet story with fun characters and some lovely and often silly moments. Both the mains had certain ideas about each other before they met. These perceptions shaped how they treated each other at first. As they got to know each other they realized they'd let their misconceptions judge the other person and soon realized there was so much more to them that most people don't see. I enjoyed the journey they went through. They were silly with each other and were very supportive of the paths they needed to take. I also really enjoyed Alex's sisters. Would love to see more of them in this series.
With major Princess Diaries vibes, THE BACKUP PRINCESS by Kate O'Keeffe, where an American girl's unexpected ascent to royalty collides with a fiery romance with a neighboring country's prince.
I really enjoyed Maddie and Alexander's journey to finding love. While there was a faster timeline to their love story, it developed at a believable pace. Their meet-cute in a closet was such a fun way to introduce the pair without really introducing the pair and adding tension. Maddie's character was so fun and quirky, and it was fun seeing Alex shed his playboy ways to finally settle down. There were so many tender moments between the pair, especially their trip to the hospital and the peacocks. I'm a sucker for side characters, so I loved Alexander's family, especially his younger sister and Maddie's best friend Chloe is an absolute hoot.
The Backup Princess is a dual POV enemies to friends to lovers, royal romance, with forced proximity and no third act breakup. It's a closed-door romance with a guaranteed happily ever after. This is book one in the brand new series Royally Kissed and I can't wait to see what happens in the series next.
A huge thanks to the author for allowing me to read the book early. The Backup Princess is available now!
What grabbed me - title, cover, and then the authors last name (my almost soon to be last name spelt different though, so naturally I had to give her a shot too!).
Such a cute read! Major Princess Diaries vibes, just if she knew she was a princess.
Absolutely loved the whole story, such a fun and light read. Perfect for between heavy reads or a day at the beach.
The novel is clean too, so I'd say even YA would enjoy this too.
Thank you NetGalley and Wild Lime Books (publisher) for my DRC in exchange for my honest review.
Romance, sweet, contemporary, royal; series but stand alone read Maddie and Prince Alex’s story started out shaky after Maddie punches Alex in the nose in a custodial closet (no details, you have to read it!!) Maddie settling into her new home, with her grandparents in Maldovia, and Alex figuring out she might be the one to get him to really fall in love and stop and find his heart and love. Fun royal setting, interesting dilemma for the two royals with both their families, and interesting resolution, and of course, a lovely HEA.
