The Kraken King, Part VIII The Kraken King and the Greatest Adventure

Goodreads info: I am slowly, slowly adding to my shelves and reviews. It's unlikely that I will join many book discussions (especially of my own work) simply because I don't want to stifle reader conversation.
Bio: Meljean was raised in the middle of the woods, and hid under her blankets at night with fairy tales, comic books, and romances. She left the forest and went on a misguided tour through the world of accounting before focusing on her first loves, reading and writing–and she realized that monsters, superheroes, and happily-ever-afters are easily found between the covers, as well as under them, so she set out to make her own.
Meljean lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.
I believe that The Kraken King is a serialized book done right. Here’s why:
The Kraken King was divided into 8 parts, each about 4 chapters long. Each part could stand alone as a mini story, however for optimal reading enjoyment, I would suggest that they all be read in consecutive order. Each section is pretty long and runs about 90 -100 or more pages.
Each part was released a week apart. This gives the reader time to read and savor each section, but not wait too long for the next part.
The Kraken King comes from a well established series with a base of avid fans who just can’t wait to get their hands on the next book. The majority of people who pick up this book have read the early installments: The Iron Duke, Heart of Steel, Riveted, and the many other novellas in the series.
Each part begins with a letter from the main character Zenobia Fox to her brother Archimedes Fox. The letter is dated and gives the reader a Zenobia’s location for that part. The letters cleverly serve as a recap to earlier parts of the book.
The Kraken King is well suited for a serialized release because it really does fit with the time period. Our main character Zenobia is a writer and she writes adventures starring her brother in a serialized format.
The serialized version of The Kraken King comes with bonus content. Personally, that was a moot point because I feel that if you are stepping into this book, you have most likely read the earlier books in the series. The bonus content I’ve seen are excerpts from The Iron Duke, Heart of Steel, Riveted and Here There Be Monsters.
It takes a talented author to write a good serialized novel. Ms. Brook builds a fascinating alternate history of the world and fills it with ingenious steampunk contraptions, colorful characters, and incredible monsters (both human and animal). It’s a visually stunning world and it is such fun to imagine how it all looks. Take a look at the covers, aren’t they spectacular?
The Verdict: To Serial or Not to Serial? Definitely run and get this series, especially if you are a fan of the Iron Seas series. Ariq is worth it! Highly recommended.
For those who wish to have the entire book as a reading experience, there is talk that The Kraken King will be available as a full book later this year. There was talk of August then September, but it has been moved back to even later in the year.
For More Information on This Series: Ms. Brook has a wonderful Iron Seas Guide on her web page. If you have not yet had a chance to read her series, take a look at it – it does help you understand the wonderful world she has created.

Original Review: I burnt dinner trying to read and cook at the same time. :/
Amazing.
Edited Review:
I held my breath almost through the entire story. OMG people, this was amazing. The build up to the ending is so intense, as is the entire book, but seriously, this was heart-pounding, breath-holding, edge of the seat intense. Ariq is once more put in the position of handing over the Skybreaker. Or maybe he was never really given the option. His town is taken hostage, so to speak, and it leaves him little choice. Ariq has to show the Skybreaker. But he’ll have the advantage this time. With help from Archimedes and Yasmeen, and their allies, they make it to the Skybreaker. This is the 8th and final installment of The Kraken King, and my reviews were short compared to normal, but I wanted my initial reactions down after I read each part. You honestly won’t find a better-written serial than The Kraken King. It’s serial done right, where it reads as if each part is meant to be its own section, its own piece of the book, rather than feeling like someone took a full-length book and split it into pieces. I can’t recommend this serial enough, and all of you are lucky that it’s been released so there’s no waiting! The romance was beautiful, the action was tense and plentiful, and the plot was intense. If you are wondering whether it’s worth the price, it is.
Well the first thing I should say about this final part is to remind readers (since I had to remind myself) that this is a romance at the heart of this story and not a blood soaked tale of revenge (which is exactly what I wanted after Part 7) but it seems Ms Brook wanted to complete her story as it should be in spite of my desire for revenge.
Everything is coming to a head, the Nippon forces are all around Krakentown, the evil Ghazan Bator has moved into his town and the future looks dim for any peace loving people.
The solution to this mess is neither easy nor is it without a bit of bloodshed but it is VERY creative and allows the story to continue to revolve around the romance which is what this story has always been about and the ending is very satisfying for everyone except my personal "revenge junkie" but even he is grudgingly happy with the story .
I feel there are more stories coming out of this world that I hope will be this good but to be honest I have a hard time imagining a more glorious adventure than this one and the height of the romance is something out of a Hollywood epic. Well done indeed Ms Brook :) The title for this part was spot on, Greatest Adventure exactly.
Loved it, Loved it, Loved it. Couldn't get enough! I read all the parts 1-7, then read 8 The Kraken King, Part VIII: The Kraken King and the Greatest Adventure and WOW! I'm still sticking with Loved it!
Meljean Brook writes wonderful steampunk. High adventure, masterful mechanics, and political mechanizations all punctuate a fabulously difficult love story. And the war machine was a device of all devices! I felt like I was along for the ride.
If you love monsters, mayhem, mechanics, and romance (ok, didn't have an M word without giving a spoiler), check out The Kraken King by Meljean Brook.
I read this and the previous one back to back and can I say. Bloody Brilliant. I adore Meljean's steampunk series but this one blows them out of the water. The best read this year and in my top 20 books ever. This is a must read. No one can put emotion, intelligence and action into a story like Meljean.
This whole serial was just the most enjoyable and exciting read I've had in ages. I loved every installment, the characters, the plot, the intrigue and sigh...Ariq, so swoon-worthy. I might have mentioned in another review that I want to be Zenobia...well, even more so now that I've finished the story.
Pondering what to do, now that the serial is over, I've decided to begin at Part I and read it all again, start to finish, without waiting a week between each installment, because I might have missed something in the eight weeks of reading. (Oh, who am I kidding? I just want more of Ariq...)
You know when you finish a book with a full heart and tears of joy streaming down you cheeks?! Sad for the end but so happy? That.
My Rating: A+, Personal Favorite Originally posted at That’s What I’m Talking About Review copy provided by the author.
NOTE: This review contains spoilers from the preceding parts of the book.
The thrilling and immensely satisfying conclusion to the best book I’ve read in 2014 is here. The Kraken King and the Greatest Adventure opens shortly after the conclusion of Part VII. Flying towards Krakentown, Zenobia sits at Ariq's unconscious side, waiting for him to regain consciousness. She knows he will recover, but is apprehensive. After discovering that Archimedes never received her letters, Zenobia fills the time by clueing in Archimedes to all their adventures thus far.
Ariq and Zenobia, together with Archimedes, Yasmeen, Cooper, and Mara, head to Krakentown to confront Ariq’s enemies and save his town and people. Although his town is surrounded, for now his people are all safe and no one dead. Once Ariq awakes, he devises a plan to take back his town and rescue his people.
I don’t know how to conclude my series of reviews for The Kraken King without excessive gushing praise or spilling the beans as to the dramatic and fulfilling conclusion. Part VIII is effectively the last few chapters of the book, and to go into details about the plot would be too spoilerish. However, I will attempt to highlight some of my favorite components about this final part.
First of all, I loved the climatic scenes and overall direction of the ongoing plot regarding Ariq, the Skybreaker weapon, and his nemeses. Ariq was placed into an impossible situation, and I appreciate how the author addressed the complexity of the situation, coming to a conclusion that is both emotionally and intellectually satisfying. The story is written with an eye for detail, creating intense tension, which is never over-the-top or gratuitous. I cannot stress how well done the whole situation is written. The tension is taut, and Ariq stays so calm. I love how the situation is diffused via logic and reasoning.
The story also brings the reader full circle with the romance of Ariq and Zenobia, who have stolen my heart and become my favorite romantic couple. The pair has fallen so deeply in love with one another, and everything that has remained unsaid finally spills out. They share scenes that are both intimate and humorous. I simply adore their journey discovering a love that is true and deep.
Finally, the story also touches on some of the other relationships such as the one between Ariq and his brother. The pair not only hammer out some of the concerns that happened back in Part I, but also some life-long issues. I also love seeing Archimedes with Zenobia. His love for her put a smile on my face and brought tears to my eyes. It is all of these more minor pieces of the story, which take up very few pages, that make The Kraken King one of those perfect reads.
The Kraken King and the Greatest Adventure is truly the perfect ending for this saga. The stakes are high and I am happy to report that every conflict is resolved. I am completely satisfied with the emotional content, the tension and action, and the conflict resolution. I feel that Ms. Brook does a marvelous job wrapping up the story without giving readers an easy out. I am going to miss my weekly adventures with The Kraken King and Zenobia.
At the ending of part seven Zenobia’s brother and his bride made an appearance, and after a daring rescue Zenobia and Ariq are finally on their way to Kraken Town. Injured protecting his wife during the mad dash to the airship Ariq is slowly healing and Zenobia remains close by his side. The big battle is almost upon them and with Nippon forces surrounding his town, a pissed off captain of the imperial guard sure to be headed their way and Ghazan Bator waiting with his soldiers for Ariq to show up, they can only expect the worst and hope for the best. But at least they are in it together.
After eight installments over eight weeks, battles with kraken and boiler worms and some of the most romantic love scenes I have ever read, the conclusion to the Kraken King saga is finally here. I remember thinking at the end of part seven that this one just had to be action packed, but I was wrong. Don’t get mistake me, there is action and adventure as Ariq and Zenobia’s story draws to a close, but not near at the level I was expecting, Yes, you will finally get to see what all the hoopla is about regarding the Skybreaker and there is a lovely happy ever after for our stubborn, passionate lovers. Ariq shows both his cunning and strength, Zenobia proves once again that she is a fantastic heroine, the bad guys get what’s coming to them and everything wraps up. Even though I was expecting revenge and non-stop fighting, I think this adventure ended exactly as it should have. I couldn’t have been more pleased.
I’ve always adored this series, but with The Kraken King I think Meljean Brook has outdone herself. I know she has more stories to come in this world, at least I pray she does, but I just can’t see how she can write anything better than this. I’ve heard the grumblings regarding the format, and to be completely honest I wasn’t all that jazzed either when I first heard it was to be released as a serial, but in the end I would have taken this story any way I could get it. I love this world that much. Now that all parts have been released everyone has their chance to sit down and have a Kraken King marathon. This is classified as a steampunk romance, but with its lush, vivid world building, expertly fleshed out characters and epic love I think romance fans of any sub-genre will enjoy. After spending so much time over the last month with this couple I find myself already missing them, I’m almost sad to see their adventure end. The Kraken King will definitely appear on my top ten list for this year. Final Grade- A
Favorite Quote:
“Sometimes I wake up at night and see him, or I’ll be working and look up and he’s there, and I’m overcome by the sweetest ache. As if I can’t bear how much I feel for him. I never know what to do in those moments. I want to laugh. I want to cry. In all my life, I’ve never felt anything quite so wonderful–or terrifying– as what I feel when I’m with him And more than anything else, I just want to hold him so tight, because if he wasn’t there… if he wasn’t there…”
The last two parts are the resolution of the novel. What started as Zenobia Fox accompanying her pregnant friend, Helene, to the Iron Seas version of Australia to rendezvous with Helene's husband turned into this one huge adventure that involved an infamous rebel (Ariq), the reason for the rebellion, an Empress, and MBrook's version of a steampunk nuclear weapon. Not to mention taking trips to exotic places with towns made up of coral and steel that keeps on growing, various dens, and other exciting happenings. THE KRAKEN KING as a whole is one great read, filled with wondrous places, curious characters, and brimming with diversity.
For the most part, things wrapped up rather nicely for Zenobia and Ariq. They managed to tidy up their business with the formidable Empress and kept Krakentown safe from her invasive clutches. As for the romance, these two lovebirds are very much in love, I can't help but swoon over Zenobia's analogy of Ariq (shared below). As for the world, there's much to be told and the Empress is one intimidating ruler I want more of her but next time, I hope that the story would revolve in her backyard so to speak, I'm sure her world is just as good if not better than what's shown to us here.
THE KRAKEN KING is one of those books that will give you an experience, a vacation or whatever comparison you prefer to use when you come across a book that managed to give you some sort of a 3-D experience. Whether or not you're familiar with Steampunk or new to the genre, I urge you to give this a try. All the parts are out so you don't have to wait and can binge at your own time. We got another winner here, Supies!
"And what had begun as a simple journey had become so much more."
This book was just so much more in every way - the characters, the plot, the adventure, the romance, the steampunk world; even the serial format was an experience. I can't stop thinking about this story and couple. I loved Zenobia and Ariq so hard. They are easily my favorite couple of Brook’s that she’s written in the Iron Seas world and The Kraken King has become my favorite Iron Seas novel.
Also, it's one of only four books (that wasn’t a re-read) that's been a five star read for me so far this year. Needless to say I’ll be buying the print book when it releases and reading it again.
4.5 stars - I really liked it. The Kraken King and the Greatest (and final) Adventure resolves the emotional cliff hanger from the previous book, and wraps up the serial with a big finish final battle and a HEA for Ariq and Zenobia. I enjoyed this latest episode, and am happy to have made the journey through all eight parts and a bit sad to be leaving the story and the starring pair behind after being immersed in the Iron Seas world and Ariq and Zenobia's adventurous courtship for over eight weeks.
I would definitely read another story in this format - which is saying a lot for 'little miss instant gratification me'. The serial format was fun and I will miss my weekly Iron Seas fix.
The last installment of the Kraken King, wish there were a few more as it is truly hard to say goodbye to these characters. A wonderful series filled with suspense, action, humour, emotion and sweet romance. A swoon worthy male and a most likeable female. Overall this is a great book, the author always has the steampunk theme present, descriptions are extremely well written and character development is beautifully done. If I had an extra star I would give it.
I have absolutely loved the adventure this serial has taken me in. Overall this is my type of romance and book. It had action and adventure. Interesting creatures that are both flesh and machine. Scientific and technical without bogging down the story too much. Zenobia and Ariq were smart, sexy, respectful and cute as hell. It was nice to go on their love adventure. Both are so distrustful and loners by nature. It was nice to see them come together and let some of their walls down for each other.
Meljean Brook has outdone herself. The Kraken King is the high point of her Iron Seas series, much more detailed and un-putdownable than the other books. The serialization was done just right- each novella transporting the reader to a newer phase in Zenobia's journey.
Yasmeen and Archimedes make an appearance (finally!) in the heart pounding face off with the Nipponese empress and those who wish to get their hands on the Skybreaker. Although Ariq was cornered in a seemingly dead-end situation, the book was brought to a logical and satisfying conclusion.
A perfect end to what, for me, has been an unusual reading experience.
After the horrific events of part VII this is the final conflict. Ariq, Zenobia and the gang rush to Krakentown to save his people.
All is resolved in a satisfactory and plausible fashion.
I think there can be no higher commendation of a book or series than when a reader wants to read more of the characters and I certainly would love to know more of the characters we saw in the Kraken King serial.
Zenobia and Ariq must now move quickly and carefully. It’s not just the Rebellion against the Horde that are manoeuvring to claim the Skybreaker, but the Nipponese Empire as well. Both of them are powers that can wipe out Ariq’s home of Krakentown and all the people who have come to respect and rely on him.
They need to stop this conflict before it even begins – because against such powers even if they win the fight, the cost will be impossibly high to pay
This finally concludes the whole saga of the Kraken King. On the whole I’ve loved it, but I think in future I will wait for all the individual “episodes” to be released on one book – the short story format doesn’t work well for me, though this series has done a very good job of resisting the urge to recap excessively with each instalment and has assumed that we remember the last book and didn’t need it regurgitating all over again.
The writing is also excellent. We’ve got the perfect pacing without either the rush which leaves emotions flat and the world unexplained, or the vast rambly lines of someone who loves their angst monologues or who is desperate to give me a lecture on their world and how much they love it. We have humour, we have action, we have plotting and thinking and rich worlds and snark and good emotion – we have it all and I love it, yes yes I do. And as an ending book in a mini-series this is the ending and it ends it well – it’s satisfying, it’s triumphant, it leaves you feeling vindicated and victorious and doesn’t leave any ends left loose – while still leaving everything in place in case the author wants to come back.
The writing has always made me like this series. But what has made me love this series throughout are the characters
Perhaps my greatest love has been how practical they are. I read a lot of books and watch a lot of shows where people lose their ever loving minds on a regular basis. They constantly do things that make little sense – or which require them to act in a grossly excessive, self-absorbed or emotionally extreme manner. Zenobia and Ariq are not those people. They are sensible – when they’re hurt or upset or angry, they feel it, they feel it deeply – but they also factor in common sense. They don’t leap off without thinking (or are at least aware when they do), they maintain perspective and they maintain their priorities. Zenobia in always keeping herself safe and not letting love overwhelm caution and Ariq by always remembering his people who rely on him and he has a duty to. Zenobia is no coward but fully recognises what she can and cannot do and when her presence adds nothing. Ariq is protective but fully recognises that this can be stifling and smothering. He’s huge and dangerous and capable of massive violence both personally and with the weapons at his command – and he doesn’t use them because he recognises the long term consequences.
This has been maintained throughout the books and really shines through in the ending. An ending where angry lashing out would work – where rage and vengeance would not only be acceptable but something I would cheer… and they don’t. They’re sensible, they’re restrained, they recognise what is good in the long run for themselves but mainly for the people who they owe respect to. They’re actually worthy of being leaders not because they’re super strong or pretty or have special woo-woo, but because they take that duty seriously. They’re certainly better people than me.
In turn this also worked really well with the romance, it was passionate, it was stormy, they had falling outs and difficulties and rifts but all were very natural to their characters, all came with understandable, sensible even while emotional responses and none of them felt ridiculous. I felt for them, I didn’t get frustrated by them. Perhaps this is as much because neither of them stopped becoming people in order to become love interests which I think a lot of romance I’ve read has had a problem with: the romance hits and their world disappears – except for the romance and things that affect that romance. Ariq and Zenobia end this book in love, their marriage affirmed and all the stronger for the respect they have built for each other rather than the ZING INSTA LOVE STRIKES!
And finally, we get to the end! I must confess that, though I'm writing this review a couple of weeks after that for part 7, I wasn't able to wait quite as long as I'd planned in between installments. Part 7 left things at quite an intriguing point, and after some 4 days, I gave in.
I don't want to give too much away here. Suffice it to say that we get our final confrontation here, and it's fantastic. It's a clever, if still dangerous, plan and the execution made complete sense. It was also incredibly cinematic. There was a point where I was sitting there open-mouthed, as some truly awesome (in the formal sense of the word) scenes played out in my mind.
And the romance. Ahhhh! We're almost there when we start this, but the final step, the final acceptance of each other here, it was really sweet. I closed the book with a happy sigh.
So, I loved the story itself, but a big element with this one was how well the serial format would work for me. In the end, the results were mixed.
On the positive side, I liked the pause for thought in between installments. I actually did find myself thinking about the story in those periods, and the story might have felt fresher each time because of them. The catching up was seamless, with each installment starting with a letter from Zenobia to her brother that was much more than "...and this is what's happened in the last few days." I loved those, they were lovely. There were also some really unobtrusive bits during the text itself. That all worked beautifully, and I wouldn't expect it to be clunky (or even noticeable) for those who are planning to read the book in one go when it comes out later in the year. I also never got annoyed by being left hanging, mainly because I wasn't. The breaks came at places which felt like natural stopping points. There would be unresolved overall things, but each part felt self-contained and we'd get small resolutions in each. It felt like a well-done television series, in that respect.
On the negative side it's all about the mechanics. Reading one installment a week requires you to be in the right mood for that kind of story every week. Much as I love Meljean's books, sometimes I'm in the mood for adventure romance, sometimes I'm not. Also, I would obviously read other stuff in between episodes and would normally be in the middle of another book when the next part came out. Mostly I'd happily put that down for a couple of hours to read the new episode of The Kraken King, but sometimes I didn't want to. That's what happened when I was on holiday in Italy. I'd just started The Goblin King on the flight there. That is a fantastic book which I just didn't want to put down. I didn't have much time to read anyway, but when I did, The Goblin King it was. So yeah, in summary, I found real life interfering much more with my reading rhythm with a serial format than it would have with a regular novel.
Would I try the format again soon? Yes, but my position hasn't changed much from before I started this. I'd said I'd try a serial if it was by a trusted author and not simply a regular book chopped into roughly equal parts, and that hasn't changed.
There couldn't have been a better ending. I loved it. I loved reading this book. I can't believe it ended. I expected Kraken King to be great but I didn't dare hope, and it exceeded all my expectations. Zenobia Fox was an interesting character and I was curious to find out more about her. And I have never not once been dissapointed in her from page 1 till the last. She's an amazing woman and maybe it was the writing but although she wasn't as strong as Yasmeen or as fearless as Mina; she was at least as powerful as them and so very inspiring. I liked the way she thinks, the way she acts; I understood the reason for her walls and the courage necessary to her break those walls for some people (despite having every right to keep them, after all she went through) and I loved her for all the little but actually big things she sacrificed for others. She was so mature and yet so alive; always aware and amazed by the wonders around her, running from one adventure to another but never recklessly; wisely. Zenobia may have spent most of her time writing in a house, not seen much sun, been a virgin but she was more sensible, more beautiful and more incredible than most women. Ariq Noyan wasn't the man I thought he would be from what I read in the previous books but I loved the real one more than my imagination either. He is just so perfect! Not because he's a flawless prince charming he did mistakes but because he was honorable, kept his word, knew his strengths and weaknesses, loved fiercely (not all at once, gradually but strongly), cared for those around him more than anything, valued life and he felt so real despite being a character in a novel. (And well, I may have liked that he wasn't a womanizer either) I can say for certain Zenobia couldn't find a better husband. And I just have to say, bedroom scenes usually make me so uncomfortable, I usually don't mind the flirt even if lewd but in most books I can't read the bedroom scenes; but I couldn't pass the ones in this book... I tried really but it felt -however weird it may sound- beautiful! While at first it seemed like just an adventure or lust for Zenobia&Ariq, I could see that it later turned into a deep need and love. I was smiling like an idiot everytime they looked at each other secretly or touched simply or hugged tightly. I wish all marriages were like theirs; so full of faith, respect and love. Meljean Brook has written so greatly that every sentence was an adventure for me. And while I love all the books in Iron Seas and enjoyed reading each one so much; Kraken King feels incomparable. So many twists, so many new characters, new information and although it's the same world it again felt like a whole new world in this book.
Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Vivacious Valkyrie - Marta: *Copy gifted in exchange for an honest review
The last instalment of Zenobia's journey and finally we get to read about the incredible war machine known as the Skybreaker. Ariq has sworn to protect it and not allow it to be used but the Nippon Empire are hell bent on claiming it. Having narrowly escaped from capture Ariq is still healing but with the help and support of family and friends maybe they can find a way to finally defeat their enemies . Ghazan Bator holds all of Kraken town hostage with the Empires fleet circling their waters but with a stout heart and a daring plan where there's life there's hope! One thing is certain Ariq will do all within his power to protect that which he cares about and there's no doubt that Zenobia is top of his list.
These two characters have truly embarked on a grand adventure that has had so many heart stopping moments that it could only be considered a five star read! First of all this is a romance but it's a passionate combustible relationship that just sucked this reader right in. I want Ariq! He's everything you imagine a hero to be and yet he's not perfect and constantly wants to do the right thing but o my I could shake that man! He's so busy trying to give Zenobia the freedom she craves that he forgets what she needs most is his love. Zenobia hasn't had a good start in life and is desperate to keep her financial independence but mercenary fortune hunters and numerous kidnap attempts have made her wary of men. The most important thing in a relationship is trust but in order for that to happen full disclosure is often needed and Zenobia has learned this the hard way. To say she has blossomed under Ariqs attentions is to detract from her natural spunk but she has become a much softer heroine whilst never losing the wit and strength that has made her such a likeable character.
This author has truly got a wonderful imagination and happily the talent to go with it. I've had an amazing time reading these ebooks and heartily recommend this series which for me is a keeper. I'd love her to pen more about these characters but anything in this fabulous world that Ms Brook has created would go on my wish list as it's been such an emotional journey. Sometimes there are not enough superlatives to use to express how good a book and it's world building is and that would be the case here. I absolutely loved everything about this story even if at one point events took my breath away and I'd sincerely like to thank the author for such an amazing story.
Ariq has discovered who Zenobia is, but he still needs to uncover all her secrets, as well as win her heart, as she has surely managed to steal his. But he has a plan, her walls will fall under his sensual assault and she will learn to trust him and tell him all her secrets. But, as well as the battle to win Zenobia's heart, Ariq must also discover who is threatening Kraken town and stop their plot before a new war begins.
I confess I waited till all parts of this serial were out before I read them; it was so painful to stop at the third one last time! And it was well worth the wait, I loved it, Meljean Brooks sucked back into the world of the Iron Seas with ease and I couldn't stop reading until I had finished every word of The Kraken King.
I can't work out what I liked more, the romance between Zenobia and Ariq or the exciting world Brook has created, full of such intrigue and originality. I may have to say the romance, when a man as strong and wily as Ariq thrown in front of you, why resist? I loved his attack on Zenobia's"walls", as he calls them, desperate to win her trust and her love, especially when he seemed to have no idea that she was already defenseless against him. And Zenobia, it isn't often that I like a heroine as much as the hero, but I loved seeing Zenobia grow from writing about her brother's adventures, to having her own. It also helped that Ariq and Zenobia together were hot, the connection between them was tangible and the sex scenes were sensual.
I enjoyed seeing more of the world Meljean Brook has created as well, I love the way it is original, yet familiar as the figures and things we know from history are put slightly off kilter, giving us something new and exciting to explore. The Kraken King had an interesting and intricate plot, and I enjoyed reading not only to see Ariq and Zenobia get togther, but also to see what evil schemes were afoot.
I really enjoyed this book, it had a love story that managed to tug on my heart strings, a plot that kept me engrossed and a world and characters that just keeps getting richer the more you read. If you pick up one book this summer, make sure it is The Kraken King. *ARC provided by publisher

This is the fourth book in the Iron Seas series that was released in eight part installments, this is the eighth and final installment in this series.
Zenobia and Ariq arrive in Krakentown with their enemy hot on their heels. They must take whatever help they can get to defend Krakentown, even if it means they must put the horribly destructive machine of Ariq’s to use.
This was a well done conclusion to this book. The Kraken King joins forces with Archimedes Fox and the Lady Corsair and rushes back to Krakentown to defend his people. The final battle commences between those who would steal the giant war machine from Ariq and those who would defend Krakentown.
The whole novella was all very well done. There is a lot of intrigue and fighting. I really enjoyed getting to finally see the giant war machine. There really aren’t any steamy scenes between Zenobia and Ariq, which was a bit disappointing. However the reason for this was even more disappointing and odd...apparently Zenobia was on her period. Uh...okay. There is still a lot of touching romance between the two.
Both Zenobia and Ariq have grown and changed a lot throughout the book. I enjoyed them both a lot as characters. They are both caring and determined individuals and they are stronger when they are together than when they are apart.
I enjoyed how things wrapped up and thought the final solution was very creative. The giant war machine really added a wonderful steampunk feel to this book as well, I just loved it.
Overall a very well done conclusion to this The Kraken King series of novellas. This was also a well done continuation of The Iron Seas series. While I really enjoyed the The Kraken King overall, I was not a fan of the installment format. If Brook releases the next Iron Seas novel in installments I will definitely wait until the full book release to read it. This whole series is highly recommend to those who love steampunk adventure and don’t mind some romance in it as well.
With these last two installments of THE KRAKEN KING serial, Ariq and Zenobia face their greatest challenges and darkest moments. While adventure through exotic lands has permeated all installments of this story, here at the end readers must confront the titanic forces arrayed against our hero and heroine. Both their relationship and their bodies will be tested, loved ones placed in danger, and any hope of a happy future put in question.
Part 7 in particular contains the “darkest before the dawn” portion of the story, making it a more difficult read regardless of personal preference. My lower appreciate, however, was due to our hero and heroine having a little more interpersonal drama and misunderstandings than I would have liked. Nothing unbelievable for their established characters, and Brook resolves the personal side of things pretty quickly, but I have enough of an aversion to “big misunderstanding” tropes that I wanted to skip some of Ariq’s and Zenobia’s scenes. Luckily, the adventure and physical danger dominates far more of Part 7 than the that one romance trope. By the end of Part 7, there were several people who I really wanted to see torn to pieces for their actions. Part 8 certainly delivers. While political realities dictate that some get off relatively scott free, others received satisfying, fist-pumping-the-air comeuppances. Ariq’s politics and maneuvering are in full effect, managing the herculean task of carving out a happily-ever-after despite geopolitical hostility.
With these last two installments in the serial button up much of the adventure side of things, the end result is a satisfying, believable ending for a couple that deserves nothing less. Taken as a whole, THE KRAKEN KING will be an impressive and cohesive addition to the Iron Seas series. Read individually, these parts have made us apart of something special.
Ariq goes with Zenobia, Archimedes, and Lady Corsair back to his town, to try and stop bloodshed, while protecting the Skybreaker...
they infiltrate his town (that had been quietly taken over by Ghazan Bator) - killing Ghazen, and offering his men the opportunity for freedom if they will serve Ariq's uncle, Temur Agha - and most agree. And his brother Taka steps up (and before the empress's avatar leaves, she acknowledges that she knows he was innocent of any wrongdoing against them).
Ariq asks the Wajarri - the natives with whom he negotiated for his town's land... the natives who helped to move the Skybreaker (using 'worms' they altered to dig)... the natives who are tied to all of the other native tribes to stand against the empress if they feel she oversteps their boundaries. - to stand alongside him... on the north border, where they share a boarder... and they do...
and Ariq raises Skybreaker (with Zenobia in the control center, recording exactly what Ariq, and the empress' captain Nagamochi say to one another)... and this circular machine, gigantic machine raises out of the ocean... lifting Admiral Tatsukawa's ship out of the water with the delicacy of a parent holding a child...
and Ariq is patient in talking with the empress and Lady Nagamochi, reiterating his position that the machine not be used, and must stay under his protection... and seeing the futility of taking the machine from him, and under the guise of not wanting to anger the Wajarri... the empress withdraws...
and when Ariq and Zenobia reunite, Zenobia has not reservations... ahhhh
and excellent ending to this series of short story...

Coming back to where it all started, Ariq and Zenobia have returned to Krakentown to prepare to stand against their enemies together. The odds appear to not be on their side but Ariq is prepared to use everything at his disposal, including a war machine straight out of a nightmare, to protect everything and everyone he loves.
Ariq arrives back home with Zenobia by his side, his allies ready to fight, and makes a clear and dramatic statement that he’s taking back his town and will fight the Empress herself to protect his people. This installment is the most challenging to write a review for since it’s the big finale so to avoid letting anything crucial slip I’ll say this, the pay off for all the build up to this moment is so satisfying.
The detail that has gone into setting up each town and outpost and city along Ariq and Zenobia’s journey has been a pure joy to read and the changing story and surprises kept things exciting and fresh. My hands down favorite thing about this journey has been Ariq and Zenobia. Watching them morph from interesting and somewhat odd characters to downright unforgettable scene stealers has been a real privilege. An excellent journey all around. - Stephanie
I've had my issues with the instalments, though. Some were too short. Some just made the overall story disjointed, not adding anything but segmented and unnecessary breaks in the tale. Some were OK. But none were out of this world. All but one, Part VII, received three stars.
But I adored Ariq. Loved Krakentown and The Red City. It had a few wonderful moments, some delightful suspense and occasional action.
So, would I have rated this book differently had it not been delivered via serial format?
I really can't answer that. All I know is the serial format for this story did not work for me. And now it's too late to read this book in any other way. What I would suggest is, if you have the option of reading the serialised version or the complete book, try for the book.
Forget about the serials and hopefully the book as one will be as good as Brook's earlier instalments in this series.
But be assured, if Brook puts the next Iron Seas out as a straight novel, (no serial), I'll be all in. Serials or not, Meljean Brook can write.
