Book info: I am the author of the Iron Seas steampunk romance series. I've written a guide to the world (including a map) on my website.

I also write a paranormal romance series, the Guardians. That series guide is also on my website, including a "The Story So Far" feature, which allows you to catch up on all of the books that previously released in the series if you start after the first installment.

Goodreads info: I am slowly, slowly adding to my shelves and reviews. It's unlikely that I will join many book discussions (especially of my own work) simply because I don't want to stifle reader conversation.

Bio: Meljean was raised in the middle of the woods, and hid under her blankets at night with fairy tales, comic books, and romances. She left the forest and went on a misguided tour through the world of accounting before focusing on her first loves, reading and writing–and she realized that monsters, superheroes, and happily-ever-afters are easily found between the covers, as well as under them, so she set out to make her own.

Meljean lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.

This episode really ramps things up a notch, and the last lines are sigh worthy. I love this pairing.

I have been in heaven, working through the The Kraken King serials, and I have to say though that even with the week between parts, I wouldn't want to wait for the all in one volume instead - some of my favorite authors have been training me to like serials so I am in the right frame of mind for The Kraken King. The wait isn't as hard as I thought it would be, and it is always exciting to get a new installment, and it's nice not to wait a whole year for *more*.

In the Kraken King so far, there is a good touch of adventure, a bit of humor, and the detailed world building that made me a fan of the Iron Seas in the first place and which makes these new stories so entertaining. But the leads are really what seal the deal for me. Zenobia and Ariq (the Kraken King) are both such great developed characters and the way their relationship is unfolding - despite a few stumbles - is really really good. *happy sigh*

With only four more episodes to go, part four ends the first half solidly but with promises of a wild and steamy ride to come.

(I got an early peek at this, but I also purchased a copy of my very own for my 'keeper shelf' - the gorgeous covers look very nice there by the way:)

Wow, I am not sure what I can write about this part, the whole thing is a spoiler other than to say the romance takes a giant step forward.

I will say I don't really remember that many romantic scenes, they just don’t affect me that way (hey I am a guy) BUT I do remember two, the end of the first Guild Hunter novel by Nalini Singh and The Scribe by Elizabeth Hunter and now I have one more, the end of Part 4 is one of the best I ever read.

The whole book is worth the price just to read the end of this part, trust me, don’t wait past the release date of Part 4 to get parts 1-4, the rest are great but this is one of those rare gems you will remember if you have a romantic bone in your body.

NOTE: Just so you understand I seldom ever read anything more than once unless there are years between readings, I have read the last few pages of this about 10 times, it just appeals to my romantic blood and exceeded anything I thought she might write.

The time has finally come for Zenobia to reveal her secrets. ...Which aren't exactly what Ariq was expecting...
Still, complicated though the situation may be, our two lovebirds seem to at last be trusting one another, and nothing can stop their love. ...Except their abduction.

Amazing as ever! And featuring the most romantic and epic love declaration, that has me fangirling like a twelve year old:

Oh, why? Why isn't the next instalment here yet?!
I knew I should have waited to read this one!

My review copy included Parts I-IV, as well as an excerpt from Heart of Steel

Each part begins with a letter to Zenobia's brother Archimedes in which she tells him where she is and gives him a little heads up on what has been happening. I love these letters because they set the tone of the series so well.

I'm really enjoying The Kraken King and I think that this part may be my favorite so far. In this part, Ariq and Zenobia are getting nice and comfortable and acquainted in the Red City. I love watching these two together. Zenobia is falling for Ariq and they have this really sexy playfulness that all new couples seem to have.

I'm impressed with the vivid descriptions of everything in this world. From the walking machines to the Red City itself, the descriptions are so detailed that it is easy to imagine myself in this world.

The title of this part gives you a clue as to what happens in this installment. Seriously, Zenobia must be one of the most kidnapped characters I've read in a long time.

And I've decided that I want an Ariq of my own. *swoon*

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Berkley for a review copy of this book.

Without a doubt my favorite part so far. And that is saying a lot since I have been captivated from the very first page of this serial. As with the previous Iron Seas novels, the world building is sublime and vivid, but it is the characters of Zenobia and Ariq that I’m completely and hopelessly in love with. Their characterization is just superbly written.

In fact I am still swooning over one of the most deeply romantic passages that I have read in a very long time.

After the last serial I was kinda iffy, annoyed and definitely divided. Don't misunderstand me, I did pre-order this one, I was left wanting more, but also wondered if I can take any more of the on and off in the romance. I needed some sort of solution.
Which admittedly is a bit silly, since I don't need to read the end to know where the romance is going.

I guess that speaks for Brooks character building. It's as always pretty good. It's subtle yet solid. And more importantly it leaves me invested. I care about Zenobia and Ariq.
And in this one I really really grew fond of both of them. As much as I wanted to shank them both in Kraken King Part 3- this, changed my perception of everything that came before. Lots of things suddenly fell into place. Not just for the two of them but also details that irritated me, previous behavior I found a bit (in some cases a lot) frustrating, suddenly made sense. I fell in love with both of the MCs.
Damn I even care about the support cast- so many of them left behind by now. I found myself wondering how Taka is doing, and if Brook is possibly going to write a book about him... yep. I know, he was in what all of one or two chapters? And Helen, though she is annoying as hell, dizzy the only kind comment I can muster. I want to know how she will fair. And Mara and Cooper... Ah, but I am getting distracted.
Back to part four:

The world building is again, beyond superb. Each serial Brook just blows my mind away. All of Zenobia's traveling brings them into unchartered territory, every single place being described with amazing detail. I know I have said that about each and every single serial. And I am sorry to tell you, that I probably will gush about each and every following one as well. If you read Brook before, you will understand. Her world building is spectacular. ALWAYS. The world she built in Iron Seas is clever, imaginative and never ceases to impress or astound. And in the Kraken King she put it a notch up. Each serial brings an entire new surrounding, delves deeper into the mechanisms of the politics and ties it cleverly, yet subtly to the previously described world and happenings. I could gush for hours! But I shall not bore you anymore.

As you guessed. The plot of the romance is more satisfying so no more ranting, sadly I can't say much more other than I was swooning and sighing. More than half is all about the romance all about the feelings and insecurities, the two of them trying to sass each other out, but also both of them being brave and opening their hearts.
Oh and how could I forget there are a couple of twists as well... *evil snicker*
And with those Brook warranted my full attention and I am looking forward to next weeks serial.

An absolute treat to read that left me a gushing fan girling googey ... something.

This installment was swoon worthy. Seriously, I swooned. Will our dashing hero rescue our brilliant heroine? Will they get a chance to kick some ass? I just can't wait to see. Come on next Tuesday!

NOTE: This review contains spoilers from the earlier parts of the book!

This week’s part opens with Zenobia and Helene traveling to the Red City under the protection of Ariq. During the episode, Ariq and Zenobia spend some quality time together, finally getting to know each other. The couple flirts and talks in innuendos which is so sexy and fun.

Once again, I am enamored with Zenobia and her bold personality. And she’s so logical. She wants to kiss Ariq again, so she informs him that it is his turn to kiss her, but she tells him so that she doesn’t have to wait. The pair have a natural banter which is hilarious.

While The Kraken King and the Inevitable Abduction is by far the shortest Part in the serial, it is packed full of emotional significance, and truly is a turning point for both the storyline and Zenobia and Ariq’s relationship. The entire truth of who Zenobia is and all that has happened between the pair comes to light. It’s almost comical at points because Ariq still isn’t entirely clear on who the writer Zenobia is, but mostly, there are tender moments between the couple.

However, as the title of this part suggests, there is the inevitable abduction. Zenobia and Ariq are taken captive, and we learn more about the reasons for and who is behind the marauder attacks. This is probably the one time to date that I felt a little confused and lost in the politics of The Kraken King. However, the author was kind enough to answer some questions for me, and upon rereading, I’ve got it all straight, I hope!

I want to point out one of my favorite scenes... a perfect example of why I simply adore Zenobia and Ariq... Even trapped by two very powerful men, Zenobia cannot stop observing and taking notes. She attempts to take notes with her fingernails scratching into her arm. Ariq immediately recognizes what she is doing, and rather that scolding or shaming her, he demands that she be given her notebook. He understands and admires her. I totally teared up during that part - don’t you agree it’s such a beautiful statement of love?!

Overall Part IV was a good one. I loved the deepening bond between Zenobia and Ariq, and that the entire truth came out. I was a little confused on the political reasons behind the abduction, and I wasn’t on the edge of my seat as much this time around. And while the overall tone was more serious, it fits this middle part of the book as a whole. I am still really loving The Kraken King, with the mood and tempo spot on for where we are in the overall story.

A combined review for Parts III & IV:

With these two new additions to the THE KRAKEN KING serial adventure, Zenobia and Ariq are established, compelling, and off on their adventure. Moving from the comfort of Ariq’s encampment to the wider world, we get to see both Ariq’s political savvy and the price of Zenobia’s fame in action. Zenobia and Ariq have an undeniable chemistry, but loyalties to respective loved ones mean their keeping all of that heat under wraps for much of this journey… but not all.

While it’s common for two characters to resist attraction because of outside forces, the loyalties that divide Zenobia and Ariq are explored and supported in such a way that they add to the plot, rather than slow things down. Whether in criminal enclaves of The Red City itself, Zenobia and Ariq dance around each other with spy vs. spy moves, striking sparks with every pass. THE FOX’S DEN and THE INEVITABLE ABDUCTION both prove that the pressures of the outside world are a real and reasonable risk. Even better, though, facing these risks brings their fears out of the shadows and Zenobia and Ariq into each other’s arms.

Through each attack, abduction, and twist and turn, Zenobia and Ariq grow closer together and reveal their true natures. THE INEVITABLE ABDUCTION is my favorite part to date, as so many secrets are revealed and these two characters get to show off their strengths. Epic and romantic, THE KRAKEN KING is shaping up to be a romance to remember.

With the villain on the cover, and the description in the title, you know you’re in for a ride with this installment!

They are finally in the Red City and we the reader are preparing for Zenobia’s defenses to come crumbling down, but oh we don’t know how this will go, do we? And it’s never easy. ARRRGGGHHH!!! I have to get the next installment asap because Good God this woman can write!

The last paragraph of Part IV, Lips parting, she stared up at him, with a light in her face and a fire in her eyes. No fear. Good. He kissed her and as he pulled away, he wasn’t leaving her. It was just the first step back to her side.
And he told her, “I’m coming for you.”

Do you see why you need to read this? Like now! Go, all of you and buy this serial now!

6/10: Good light-weight read, well done.

Way too short. Ridiculously too short. Would have scored 3.5 stars for Ariq's speech alone. But the length just makes me ask, Why?

I am your sword and your shield. I am your wolf and your steed. Mountains will tremble at my approach, for they know I will tear them apart if ever they stand between us. But you need not be afraid, Zenobia Fox, because my heart is iron and my will is steel, and before the new moon rises, I will come for you.

Did I mention I LOVE those letters Zenobia writes to Archimedes? They're so witty and funny and snarky- the sum total of her long-distance relationship with her brother is contained within them.

The slow burn of attraction has long been transformed into a spark; and Ariq's not fighting it. Not to mention his out-of-nowhere grand declaration of love that had me jumping in my seat..

on the way to the Red City, Ariq spends all time he can with Zenobia... telling her he would have her secrets - the night they arrive in Red City - and she would tell him before or after they make love... she spends the time lost in daydreams and fantasies about him - about touching him - appreciating and turned on for how he looks...

and he becomes all the more determined to break down her walls, to gain her trust, and gain her heart...

they make it into the Red City - he comes to her... she shares what secrets she feels she can - about herself, and about his uncle (whom he thought dead, but was in fact gathering an army)... sharing while he is undressing, and 'stalking' her across the room... he doesn't believe all she says (like she writes the Archimedes stories)... but does about her brother, and about his uncle (whom he thought dead, but who was raising an army to defeat the Khan) and is hurt she did not tell him who her brother really was... and as she stretches out on the bed, he realizes she is asleep - and then as the room spins, he realizes he did not protect her...

they wake up on an airship - in a metal vault...and they spend a day together, talking... he now realizes she had told him truth - though not all of it... he tells her of his ancestry, of his concubine/spy mother, and his father, a Khan, and their enhanced genetics and strength... and she share about her father locking them into closets, and telling stories to pass the time... he speculates that rebels have taken him so as to gain access to the to the Skybreaker - a massive war machine, that his mother entrusted to him - that it was for defense, not for war as it would kill all...

and it is Ghazan Bator - the rebel leader / mentor of his past whom he broke with when he saw that he was making sacrifices of people's lives with as little regard as the khan did (and allowed his mother to die, as she had outlived her value) who wants to strike down the Khan... joined by Tatsukawa, the empresses' naval lieutenant, who disagrees with her not striking at the weak Khan, so wants the war machine to eliminate the threat against - and who was also his mother's husband (after the Khan and died), and the father of his halfbrother who lives in his town, after he rescued him from the empresses' dungeon, after being tortured because they needed to be sure that his mother did not tell him anything - and his brother feels the loss of honor still...

he tells her she is his everything, and asks her to be his wife - she believes so as to better protect her...and she stays on the iron ship with Bator, and he is sent with Tatsukawa, with the empressess' fleet, to the Skybreaker... anhe new moon...d he promises to return for her by t

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Vivacious Valkyrie - Marta:
*Copy gifted in exchange for an honest review

Well this is the fourth instalment of The Kraken King and I think the title says it all! Zenobia Fox may be close to realising the end of her mission -which is getting her friend safely to Red City but her life is never uneventful. Having survived a failed kidnapping attempt thanks to Ariq ,Zenobia is well aware that her true identity has been revealed. Ariq has offered her his protection but Zenobia has yet to realise just how much he's truly offering. Just because they have reached Red City does not mean the journey is over though as Zenobias trials are only just beginning and this time she's not alone.

Wow, it's hard to review this without spoilers and it would be a crying shame to ruin it for readers so discretion is vital here. This series has been an amazing find full of twists and turns. Zenobia is such a plucky girl but she's not one to trust easily and I fear that when she gives her heart it's going to be a monumental thing. She's been sheltered in many ways but this is a woman who wishes to be emancipated and take full control of her own life and destiny. Ariq, oo lets just take a pause and try to get my feelings for that guy under control! He's so much more than he seemed initially. Born into a family that can and does hurt each other with no fear of consequences he has learned to rely solely on himself and yet he's such a loyal man. Ariq may have qualms about Zenobias secrets and true agenda but he won't let a little thing like fear stand in his way. He's a man prepared to fight for what he wants and it's clear that what he really wants is Zenobia!

Ms Brooks is a cruel woman! This is left as possibly the most infuriating cliffhanger that I have ever come across ! The only redeeming feature as far as I can see is that the next instalment is scheduled to be released soon but luckily if you prefer to read an entire story at your leisure a complete and full length edition of this story is expected later this year.

This wasn't my favourite episode as I really do enjoy all the exciting world building that this author excels at but here we were treated to more intimate moments as Zenobias barriers start to fall. The last couple of pages just blew me away and believe me if swooning was my type of thing then yep most definitely I'd would do that for Ariq! It's a wonderful ride the author is taking the readers on with intricate settings, political intrigue , fantastical creatures , strong butt kicking characters and of course heart stopping romance.

At long last, Zenobia’s identity has been revealed to Ariq. He finally begins to grasp who she is and what risks she faces, especially as the sister of Archimedes

Their love can now develop within the walls of the Red City – but just as her loving brother makes Zenobia a target, how much more so will being the lover of the Kraken King?

By now in this little episodic adventure the romance between the two is definitely going to heat up – which means we’re getting some romance tropes edging in round the sides – so there are moments when Zenobia seems to spend far too much time basking in Ariq’s super sexiness.

But even then we have a Zenobia twist. Because they keep coming together and pushing each other away in all the classic romance foils and she’s not having it. She kissed him so she informs him he will be kissing her next, it’s his turn. None of that pulling away and leaving him guessing, no hoping the other can divine how they’re feeling or what they want. Clear. Concise. Smart.

There’s still doubts, misunderstandings and trust issues, Zenobia’s numerous abductions and her brother’s past ensure that – but they are resolved relatively quickly rather than dragging on for a truly excessive amount of angst that is all too popular.

And while the romance is a much more dominant element in this episode, it’s still not the only focus. We have a continuation of the excellent world building of this wide and very original world with them finally arriving in the Red City and the Nipponese territory. I’ve said it before and will say it again, I love this reimagined world. I love that the entire world is included not just Europe and the Americas, it’s wonderful to see an imagined world that missed the great empires because of a whole new empire, of different powers in different places and native and aboriginal peoples being powerful and notable forces. This world is excellent and I could read a 100 stories in its imaginative, steampunk setting

There’s also a lot of complexity in the book. It would be easier to write a story in which the Horde is evil and anyone who opposes the Horde empire is good – but it’s not that simple by any stretch. The Rebellion is fighting against a tyrannical empire, but what will it put in its place? A series of warlords? A new empire? A regime as brutal as the last? Destabilised chaos across Asia? To say nothing of the extreme destruction and death that will come when the great armies of the Empire and their machines clash in combat

Review of installments IV-VIII

Ariq has discovered who Zenobia is, but he still needs to uncover all her secrets, as well as win her heart, as she has surely managed to steal his. But he has a plan, her walls will fall under his sensual assault and she will learn to trust him and tell him all her secrets. But, as well as the battle to win Zenobia's heart, Ariq must also discover who is threatening Kraken town and stop their plot before a new war begins.

I confess I waited till all parts of this serial were out before I read them; it was so painful to stop at the third one last time! And it was well worth the wait, I loved it, Meljean Brooks sucked back into the world of the Iron Seas with ease and I couldn't stop reading until I had finished every word of The Kraken King.

I can't work out what I liked more, the romance between Zenobia and Ariq or the exciting world Brook has created, full of such intrigue and originality. I may have to say the romance, when a man as strong and wily as Ariq thrown in front of you, why resist? I loved his attack on Zenobia's"walls", as he calls them, desperate to win her trust and her love, especially when he seemed to have no idea that she was already defenseless against him. And Zenobia, it isn't often that I like a heroine as much as the hero, but I loved seeing Zenobia grow from writing about her brother's adventures, to having her own. It also helped that Ariq and Zenobia together were hot, the connection between them was tangible and the sex scenes were sensual.

I enjoyed seeing more of the world Meljean Brook has created as well, I love the way it is original, yet familiar as the figures and things we know from history are put slightly off kilter, giving us something new and exciting to explore. The Kraken King had an interesting and intricate plot, and I enjoyed reading not only to see Ariq and Zenobia get togther, but also to see what evil schemes were afoot.

I really enjoyed this book, it had a love story that managed to tug on my heart strings, a plot that kept me engrossed and a world and characters that just keeps getting richer the more you read. If you pick up one book this summer, make sure it is The Kraken King.

So, so good.

Review originally posted at http://fictionvixen.com/review-kraken...

Oh, wow. This serial is blowing my mind. With each installment it just gets better and better. I am completely hooked.

At the end of part three, Ariq let it be known that Zenobia was under his protection and in the process revealed that he knew more about her than she thought. Now they are finally in the Red City and he wants them to come to an understanding about their relationship. There is intense chemistry and attraction between them, but they’ve been playing this push and pull, back and forth game and neither knows what exactly is going on or just what the other really feels. Ariq wants her to tell him what all she needs protecting from, but she’s scared of exactly what to reveal because she’s unsure how much Ariq already knows. He wants her to come to him with the truth, because only then will he believe that she truly trusts him. But Ariq is determined that no matter what, they will settle this thing between them and finally become lovers.

Unfortunately, right when the getting’s good and readers think that “YES!! It’s finally happening!” the bad guys interrupt and Zenobia and Ariq are taken hostage. I might have whimpered and cried just a little bit. But this leads to an understanding of who the bad guys are and what their mission is…. and one swoon worthy, romantic moment that I read three times. Then I highlighted it and read it again. I am not kidding. Meljean Brook slayed me and then left me hanging, desperately looking forward to the next installment.

Part 4 includes chapters 13-15, and so far is my favorite. While I have a lot of love for the world building and action, it’s really Ariq and Zenobia who make the Kraken King such an intense and captivating read. I am in love with this H/h. Together. Apart. They are awesome. Final Grade- A

On to The Kraken King Part V: The Kraken King and the Iron Heart.

My second favorite quote: (because you really need to read my favorite for yourselves)

Still staring out the porthole, she said, “How big?”

Ariq leaned closer and waited until she looked up at him. That amazing, terrible smile had widened to a grin. “My grip isn’t the only reason I’m called the Kraken.”

The adventure continues as we get some truths that come out between Ariq and Zenobia and there’s an abduction by some very dangerous characters – it’s never a dull moment!

On their way to the Red City, Ariq wants answers from Zenobia – he now knows her real name but needs to know why he’s protecting her. From what, from who, he needs this information and gives her a choice: tell him as soon as he comes to her room that night, or tell him as soon as he wakes up next to her in the morning. Oh Ariq…

Zenobia knows it’s long overdue for her to come clean about herself, to an extent. She doesn’t give the full story however, she does tell Ariq more than she’s told anyone else but as they’re talking and finally moving things toward her bed, they’re both gassed and taken prisoner. Sexual frustration – check.

My first thought was poor Zenobia, even when she isn’t the intended target, in this case that honor goes to Ariq, she just can’t avoid being held hostage. Their captors are two men that Ariq knows far too well and they now know what Zenobia means to Ariq. Zenobia is now being held as collateral, a way to ensure Ariq’s cooperation in giving up the location of a war machine, the Skybreaker, something he’s desperate not to do.

As this installment comes to a close, Zenobia is starting to feel defeated and Ariq can’t take being separated from her without her completely understanding how he feels. He makes his protection of her known publicly along with another personal gesture (that I’ll keep a secret because it’s awesome). He vows to come back for her and while Zenobia hopes desperately that he’s telling the truth, she can’t help but feel alone and scared all over again. I hope for her sake Ariq follows through, and quickly!

Opening part four of this series brings a rather surprising relief to the weekly anxiety of waiting for the next installment of the Kraken King.

I happily opened the book and found myself somewhere over Southwestern Australia making my way to the Red City on May 27th. I’m no longer in my comfortable home, but instead I can feel the hot desert air that’s scorching my skin and I’m surprised that I will miss the smugglers den as Zenobia and Ariq continue their journey to the Red City.

Zenobia’s letters to her brother are most entertaining, her sense of humour shines through in her words to him and I can only hope that the author will continue with these. Avoiding boring dialogue between the characters, Meljean Brook manages to supply us with a fair amount of background information on who they are, their fears and hopes helping us understand them better and thus their actions too.

Finally I know why they call it the Red City, I confess I was very curious about this. How exciting, this is a city full of strange customs and even more peculiar people. There is something fascinating about airships and I love imagining them hovering above the cities, balloons, wings and steam engines, how can one not be captivated with these descriptions?

There is no risk in repeating myself when I say that I am swooning at the sweetness between Zenobia and Ariq as this is the first time that the beauty of romance sweetens this book. But now I risk repetition by saying that I was not disappointed by the extremely well written action scenes and the elaborate political intrigue that I look forward to in this story and always find.

Is that anyway to end this story? Another week of waiting, another week of agony before I can read what will happen next.

This is the fourth installment out of a total of eight installments that are releasing weekly for the Kraken King book (this is book 4 overall in the Iron Seas series). This was a very well additon to the Kraken King story, although there was less action than in previous installments and more romance.

Zenobia and Ariq finally make it to the Red City. Ariq has declared Zenobia to be under his protection, but in return he wants to learn her secrets. While Zenobia struggles with the decision of whether or not to trust Ariq, they both find out that there are bigger dangers and plots afoot.

This was very well done. Again there wasn't as much action as in the first two parts of this book. There is a bit more romance in this installment, all the romance is incredibly well done.

I continue to enjoy both Zenobia and Ariq as characters; they are interesting, likable, and engaging. This is the episode where Zenobia reveals many of her secrets, we also learn more of Ariq’s back story.

I really enjoyed the description of the The Red City, it is a living city made of coral that grows and changes. It's such an imaginative idea and I really enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see more of The Red City in the next installment.

This is a very short read. I continue to be frustrated by the fact this is being released in installments. For this book I will continue to read the installments, but for future books in the series I will wait until the final book is released to read it.

Overall this was a great addition to the series. I continue to enjoy the characters and loved the introduction to The Red City. There was more romance and politics than action in this episode. Hopefully the next episode will pick up pace and be a bit longer. This one was a very short read. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Just finished, and I'm practically speechless. This segment is indescribably fantastic, and deserves more than a perfect 5 out of 5 for the rating. How does Meljean write such a fabulous and mindblowing story?!

Favorite quotes:
That amazing, terrible smile had widened to a grin. “My grip isn’t the only reason I’m called the Kraken.” Of course. Any man would say that. She raised both hands, palm to palm, and wiggled her fingers like tentacles. “So it’s like this?” A shout of laughter shot from him. Swiftly catching her fingers, he clasped them to his chest to stop their waving, and she felt the shudder that ran through him as he contained his laugh. Still, a few more seconds passed before he said, “Exactly like that.”

“Because you have a light in your face and a fire in your eyes, and the first time I looked into them, I knew it would be you. The woman I would want forever. The woman I need at my side. The woman I would love.”

Any soldier who couldn’t look another in the eye didn’t truly believe in what they were fighting for.

Ariq hadn’t known a man could survive so much pride and pain at once. Though she had no reason to care anything about his people, his wife would sacrifice herself to stop Ghazan Bator from claiming the machine. His wife thought that he would sacrifice her.

“You are my queen,” he told her, and clasped her hand to his overfilled heart. Though emotion roughened his voice, he spoke quietly. This was only for her. “I am your sword and your shield. I am your wolf and your steed. Mountains will tremble at my approach, for they know I will tear them apart if ever they stand between us. But you need not be afraid, Zenobia Fox, because my heart is iron and my will is steel, and before the new moon rises, I will come for you.”

He kissed her and as he pulled away, he wasn’t leaving her. It was just the first step back to her side.

I'm assuming that if you're reading this, you've read the first 3 parts (but not necessarily this part, so no spoilers for that here).

And we finally get to the Red City! Zenobia and Ariq have been circling each other in the last few parts, each keeping their own secrets and suspecting each other's motivations, but they finally started moving towards each other in unison in Part 3. That continues here, and they finally have a conversation where cards start going on the table. And then comes the Inevitable Abduction!

There are really important developments here, both in the external plot and romance departments. Ariq had some ideas about what might be going on, but his assumptions about what secrets Zenobia might be keeping had led him down a path that wasn't quite right. Now things become clearer, and we finally understand what's at stake. All I'll say is that it's terribly exciting and I can't wait to see how things develop.

As for the romance, I'm going to have to be even more cryptic. Things move forward massively, and we get some wonderfully romantic and heartwrenching scenes. This part made me want to scream, but in a good way.

I also loved how the characters continue to develop, and in a way that makes it clear how well they complement each other. It's their worldviews and the ways they think and what they value. They are becoming one of my favourite couples.

My only very slight complaint is that I want to see more of the Red City, but I'm sure that will come later on.

After another close call, Zenobia is again saved by Ariq and is now officially under the protection of the Kraken King. Making their way into The Red City, Ariq and Zenobia finally come clean (about most things) to each other but when things finally appear to be looking up, someone comes looking for Ariq and is prepared to use Zenobia to get what he want.

Avoidance is no longer the name of the game. Ariq and Zenobia, with a needed push, come clean to each other. Zenobia is hurt that she has been spied on and Ariq knows she’s still holding back but the walls are starting to crumble between them with each private moment and kiss they share. This dance of giving and taking, revealing and hiding is exciting and frustrating. I know that jumping into bed will simply not do for these complex characters but a small part of me is still hoping they will. You know, if they can keep themselves out of trouble or free of captivity long enough to have some smexy time.

The Red City is beautiful and overseen by a powerful empress. The history of the city and its inhabitants isn’t always an easy one to stomach yet it adds intensity and depth to the short amount of pages and pulls a reader in. Ariq and Zenobia are at the heart of it all and keep me coming back for each installment.

Part Four-The Kraken King and the Inevitable Abduction

Zenobia is on pins and needles as she and Ariq get closer to the Red City. She knows she will have to spill her secrets and she dreads what’s in store for once Ariq knows the whole truth. Forgiving him for his faux pas back in Krakentown, Zenobia still harbors doubt that she is not enough for him and that once he meets the real Zenobia, his feelings for her will die.

Part four focuses on Ariq’s and Zenobia’s feelings for one another. Brooks uses some downtime to reveal a softer nature of both our lovers as she helps them navigate a minefield of lies, secrets, and half truths. Zenobia is still unsure of Ariq but as we have learned, Ariq will not let her deny him anymore. The heat level rises to scorching as Ariq lets Zenobia know that he will do whatever it takes to tear down the walls around her heart. We end on a cliffhanger when Ariq’s past pays a surprise visit.

Holy crumb. Ariq and Zenobia just can't catch a break. Just when you think they're going to be able to break down those walls and finally get together, something happens. But that something leads to something unexpected, so... yeah.

I really love the look we get at how much Ariq's admires Zenobia. She's not like most women and it's those very differences that draw him to her. And the glimpses we get of her insecurities and the pain she's hiding from her past absolutely slayed me. At one point, Zenobia likens Ariq to his namesake, the Kraken. She thinks to herself that, like the Kraken, there's more to him beneath the surface than anybody can see. The same goes for her.

And that's what makes them so fascinating.

Danger is afoot and sparks are flying. On the plus side, many of those pesky secrets floating around are coming to light. It's getting tense and I can't wait to see what happens next!

This was the best so far for me. The time came for Ariq and Zenobia to share some of their secrets. Some striking revelations are made and just when they are finally coming together, a plot twist takes us into a whole new direction.

I already love both Ariq and Zenobia and here we see more of their background and learn about their past and the things which made them who they are now. His overwhelming lust for her is coupled with tenderness and deepest desire to offer understanding and protection. She is overtaken with desire to surrender to him, yet she is afraid it might end badly for both of them.

This part has a bittersweet cliffhanger ending - Ariq and Zenobia are together (in a way) but they are facing unknown danger.

The story keeps me on my toes all the time I'm reading and I just can't wait to see what happens next.

Book 4 of Iron Seas, preceded by Riveted & hopefully followed by another book???. This is a book written as a serial, made up of 8 parts: 1.The Kraken King and the Scribbling Spinster, 2. TKK and the Abominable Worm, 3. TKK and the Fox's Den, 4. TKK and the Inevitable Abduction, 5.TKK and the Iron Heart, 6. TKK and the Crumbling Walls, 7. TKK and the Empress's Eyes, 8. TKK and the Greatest Adventure. This was a great way of telling the story, especially since Zenobia is a writer of serials about her brother and/or Lady Lynx's adventures. This time the adventure belongs fully to her and her love interest, Ariq aka the Kraken King. Great story - each part very fast paced, fun and sexy.

Best. Declaration(s). Ever.

I so far have read only the first in this series and was skeptical, to say the least, of the serial format of this story. But I decided to give it a go and am so glad I did. The first three installments were solid, with interesting and likable characters. I was hooked after the first chapters and the story has gotten better with each episode.

This was the best part yet; how could I not love a man who falls for a woman's intelligence? Fortunately, the releases come only a week apart.

Bring on more!

I received a digital copy in return for an honest review from Netgalley.

I enjoyed this installment of the Kraken series, I enjoyed getting to know Red City and the continued growth of the world. It's amazing all the detail Meljean has been able to create in such a way that it never gets boring, its never repetitive and there is always something new added to spice things up.
Meljean has done a fabulous job keeping me interested and wanting more.

Well, the title says it all. In this installment we have the Inevitable Abduction. It is Zenobia Fox, after all. Getting abducted is largely what she's been good at since we met her in Archimedes' story. However! This time we get some delicious character development in addition to some long-awaited relationship development. (The anticipation in this book has been seriously delightful.)

Another strong entry!
