Trouble & the Wallflower

Rate this book
Raised in near seclusion by an agoraphobic mother, Davy Cooper’s social skills are almost nonexistent. Now that his mother has died, he needs to make friends for the first time in his life. He catches Gavin Walker’s eye, but the sexy, confident, bad boy hipster intimidates shy Davy so much that he throws away Gavin’s number every time he offers it.

When Gavin defends Davy from a rude guy, Davy begins to warm to him. However, with his limited experience, he thinks he and Gavin are too different, and anything more than a casual acquaintance will end in complete disaster.

Kade Boehme is the epitome of dorkdom, only watching TV when Rachel Maddow or one of his sports teams is on. Most of his free time is spent dancing, arguing politics or with his nose in a book. He is also a hardcore Britney Spears fangirl and has an addiction to glitter.

It was after writing a short story about boys who loved each other for a less than reputable adult website that he found his true calling, and hopefully a bit more class. He hopes to write about all the romance that he personally finds himself allergic to but that others can fall in love with. He maintains that life is real and the stories should be, as well.

This book could have been good, but it was ruined for me because the characters kept doing things that didn't make any sense (I'll come back to this point later). The writing was mediocre, and included poorly constructed sentences like this:

He'd been thrilled about the loud way Oliver got thrilled over everything when he received a high five from one of the fishmongers for dropping the tip money Davy had sent with them into the jar.

Things got sappy somewhere around the middle of the book, and those who know me are well aware of my low tolerance for overly sweet dialogue. Then there was a nice hot sex scene that had me all hot and bothered, and Gavin said "Come for me, Davy. Let go." to which Davy quietly replied, "It's scary to let go." *Screeeeech!!* Wait, what?!? It's scary to come? Seriously? He was not a virgin and it wasn't even their first time together! I know this was probably supposed to have some deep emotional meaning, but all it did was yank me right out of my sexy mood.

Now, on to the behavior that made no fucking sense. Davy is a shy guy who is uncomfortable in social situations, yet for some reason, he decides to go to a club by himself. I am an introvert, and I would never ever ever go to a club by myself. All introverts know that going somewhere crowded and sitting alone is just asking for strangers to come up and talk to you, and we really try to avoid those situations. I would assume Davy is somehow a special type of shy that is okay with this, except that he later changes his mind about attending a concert after seeing the crowd. People don't even really talk to you at concerts, yet that is somehow worse than a club.

Let me preface this next one by saying that I am not a gay man. Maybe that's the reason I am confused by this situation, and if so, I hope my male GR friends will chime in and enlighten me. So, when Gavin and Davy first hook up, they have a slight problem: . But hey, what do I know?

There were a couple of little things that made me stop and think But, what about... First, at one point Gavin is thinking about whether Davy is The One, and he believes in that ideal because he was raised old-school. But he wasn't. He was raised by a drunken slutty mom who went through tons of guys, so yeah, that made no sense. At the end of the book, Davy tells Gavin that Another thing that I never figured out was .

I've saved the most annoying and baffling behavior for last. There was absolutely no logical reason for It just seemed like an obviously contrived bump in the road in their relationship.

That seemed to be the reason for all the illogical behavior - a way to force the characters into situations that they wouldn't naturally be in to make the story go where the author wanted it to go. This stuff disrupts the flow of the story and makes it feel false. And that last one annoyed me so much, it left a bad taste in my mouth about the whole book.

There was a lot to like here: the juxtaposition of shy Davy with outgoing Gavin; Gavin's amazing grandpa; Gavin's circle of friends; and, of course, the relationship between Davy and Gavin.

Davy pushes Gavin away for many months, thinking Gavin is more trouble than he's worth. Gavin is persistent, coming into the soda shop where Davy works day after day, and really wants to get his hands on Davy. But after Davy sees Gavin at a club being very hands-on with another guy, he nearly gives up on Gavin completely.

Needless to say, the guys develop a friendship but want each other too much to just stay friends. Their first sexual encounter is...well, let's just say I wanted to throttle Gavin. Davy is a forgiving guy, though, and Gavin is lucky. Things run much more smoothly after that, and there's a lot of hotness and steam and dirty frotting (dear baby jesus, I will never tire of frotting; frotting makes me want to have a penis...but I digress).

There's some family conflict, but the MCs handle it together. Even though the love came quickly, it was believable. I felt like Davy and Gavin fit and were right for each other. Gavin pulls Davy out of his shell, and Davy becomes Gavin's rock.

I was going to throw a major temper tantrum if the "sexual compatibility" issue wasn't resolved.

The epilogue melted me into a big pile of gooeyness. I was so happy to see the guys settled so well.

Great book, and highly recommended!

Trouble & the Flower by Kade Boehme is the story of two men who fall in love despite their different personalities. Gavin, is the outgoing one, whom pursued Davy from the beginning. Davy, is the sweet shy one, whom despite his fears decides to follow his heart. This story was sweet yet painful. There were aspects of the story that broke my heart and got me so angry. There was a moment in which I wanted to throw my iPad across the room.

This is a wonderfully written story of loss, friendship, and finding the strength within yourself.. The author managed to show character growth as the story progressed- which is something I look for. It also has a great cast of secondary characters (which I'm hoping will be getting their own books). There is also a great balance of emotional, funny, and sexy moments. None overpowered the other.

This was a 5 star read for me and I most definitely recommend it. Mr. Boehme:

4.5--I Heart the Wallflower--Stars!!

This was a really sweet story....an opposites attract of sorts. Trouble and the Wallflower. Gavin and Davy.

Davy has always been painfully shy and socially lacking. His mother was agoraphobic and as a result kept Davy sheltered most of his life. When he turned 16 he got a job at a soda shop. Gavin and his friends frequent the soda shop and Gavin develops a crush on Davy.

Every day Gavin tries to hook up with Davy only to be

Davy doesn't understand what Gavin could possible see in him. Gavin is a bit of a man whore really. But there's just something about Davy that intrigues him. Eventually Davy agrees to be with friends with Gavin and so their story begins....

Gavin's grandpa Ray was a freaking riot. Gavin struggles with his feelings for Davy. Frankly, he's not used to even having feelings.

"Well, that's the oldest story in the book. You want what you can't have. Again, is it worth it? Does it hurt your heart or does it hurt your balls?"

Davy is just as attracted to Gavin as Gavin is to Davy. And just when Davy gets up the courage to make a move on Gavin....

But damn Gavin that was a DICK move. A seriously DICK move.

Poor Davy. I wanted to cry for him.

Thankfull Gavin pulls his head out of his ass and makes things right with Davy and all is wonderful in Trouble and the Wallflower land.

"There is definitely something here, Davy. I don't know why, but you make me want to be different. Hell, you make me want to be a good guy.

I don't know who convinced you that you aren't good. But you are."

And then Gavin's mom, Carmen, shows up...

She drops a bomb on Gavin and Ray. Gavin and his mom have never had a good relationship. But with Ray being sick and the bomb drop, Gavin tries to be open to his mom.

Carmen

Davy was just perfect for Gavin. He was there for Gavin when he needed him. He gave Gavin space when he needed it. He supported Gavin when he needed it.

"When everyone else saw the two of them, they saw Gavin who was nothing but trouble and Davy who was a wallflower, but in Gavin's estimation, if you looked inside you'd see that Gavin was just a scared little boy and Davy was his hero."

Loved Gavin and Davy. Loved how they brought out the best in each other. This was a super sweet, super sexy read. I definitely recommend!

This book was so heart melting and sweet but with a realism to it. It was about two people who were total opposites but when were put together, were so beautiful and amazing. I just loved it!

"Stop. You are. You're fucking amazing and I love you. You're not some fucking plaything. You're so special to me. That's right, Davy. I don't know what you did to me." Gavin laughed and took Davy's face in his hands. "I love you, Davy Cooper."

"I love you too," Davy said with a shaky voice.

●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●

Davy is in his early twenties and is still learning to come out of his shell. He doesn't socialize well with others, he prefers being in the background observing everyone live their lives. This is because of his agoraphobic mother who kept him indoors for the majority of this life until the day she passed away. Davy just wants to be normal like everyone else, but he can't tell when someone is teasing or being serious with him. I loved Davy and his naiveté. He was genuine, sweet, caring, and kind. He was such an endearing and refreshing character. He is use to people using him or not liking him for his quiet nature which makes him feel worthless. Then here comes the confident playboy, Gavin. He comes into the ice cream shop that Davy works at and keeps flirting with him. He won't stop giving him his number. Davy knows about guys like Gavin, and he isn't planning on getting hurt by him. So, he keeps rejecting him.

"Gavin, you were always strong."

"Maybe. But you made me better. Never doubt it," Gavin said before kissing both corners of Davy's mouth.

Gavin has never had to work so hard to get a guy to hook up with him. There is something about how shy and how easily Davy blushes that is so sexy to him. That, and that Davy is just hot without realizing it. Gavin has been coming in for months trying to get Davy to go out with him, and he isn't quitting until he says yes. After, Gavin "saves" Davy, he finally agrees to go out with him as friends. I just loved seeing this friendship build and seeing Davy become comfortable with Gavin and his friends. Gavin was still a jackass at times, which pissed me off, but he finally opened up and showed the real him by the end of it.

●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●

"I know it sounds crazy. It's just that I'm so used to it only being about sex--hard and fast--and when my brain realized I could do it slow and different with you, I realized that maybe I had real feelings for you."

●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●  ●

I just loved how this relationship evolved as the book when on. I loved how each day Gavin and Davy seemed to become closer, and revealed more of themselves to each other. This one wasn't full of angst that had you at the edge of your seat, but it still had me captivated, nonetheless. I wanted to see how they would continue to grow. I hurt me to learn about Gavin and Davy's pasts. Gavin had a horrible mother who didn't care about him or the hurt she caused him. I felt so bad for him and I completely loathed the woman. On the bright side, Gavin had his awesome grandfather/best friend Ray in his life who supported him. He really was the best grandpa ever. Then there was Oliver who was so adorable. Loved him!

"You sure you're up for this? Looks like these Walker men are trouble."

Davy smiled and looked over at Gavin, who was blushing. "Yes, ma'am. Turns out, I love trouble."

Overall, this story was about two totally different people working hard on trying to have a relationship that will last. It was wonderful and I enjoyed it very much. I did feel like some parts were a bit slow. The ending was awesome. I was so happy with it and for them. Even though, there was a bit of sadness mixed with it, I still loved it. This was my first book from Kade Boehme and now I am looking forward to reading more books from this author.

5 brilliant stars! This is my first Kade Boehme book and I'm completely conquered by his writing!

The plot, the characters... everything about this book is amazing!

This is the story of two young men, Gavin and Davy. Gavin has Davy as his goal... Gavin wants him, but Davy knows that he will be another one night stand, and so, even having a crush on him, he doesn't want to surrender to the other's advances.

Being raised by a over-protective and agoraphobic mother, David doesn't have many friends, he is lonely and has almost none social skills. But he craves for trouble, he craves for Gavin...

A friendship starts, but soon becomes love... and Davy becomes Gavin's most powerful support in one of the hardest time of his life!

Friendship, love and some sadness in the middle, is the recipe to a wonderful and unforgetable story!!!

With its three-dimensional characters, realistic depiction of a sweet but sometimes rocky opposites-attract relationship, and a bittersweet ending, this book by new-to-me author Kade Boehme far exceeded every expectation I had for it.

An adorable story from one of my auto-buy authors. I completely fell in love with Davy who needed big hugs, Gavin on the other hand was a little more difficult to like, but he eventually pulled his big boy pants on and 'grew up' with the love, calming influence and help of Davy and his Grandad Ray, who was wise and wonderful. Gavin's friends were really cool and I look forward to finding out more about them in future books especially the gorgeous but mentally-challenged Devon and the rock steady and reliable Sean, but most of all, I want to know how the guys get on with being Ollie's parents. Highly Recommended and congrats Kade, another winner!!

★★★★4 Made-me-melt Stars★★★★

I got so much more from this book than I expected. It was cute, sweet, tender, and surprisingly emotional and deep.

I absolutely adored both of the MCs in this book. We have Davy, the sexy and shy guy who has had a string of bad luck with dating because guys tended to take advantage of his sweet nature. He is understandably weary of Gavin, the guy with the middle name "Trouble," who pursues Davy relentlessly for months at Davy's work. You could not help but love Davy, who doesn't have a mean bone in his body and who is extremely caring and selfless.

Then we have Gavin, who at first glance looks like nothing more than, well, trouble with a capital T. He is loud-mouthed, audacious, an unabashed flirt, and a bit of a manwhore. But we learn that this character has so many layers and that his posturing is just an act to hide past hurts. In reality, Gavin is just as caring as Davy, loves his grandfather dearly, is extremely responsible for a twenty-two-year-old, is passionate, and an immensely attentive lover when he settles down with someone.

These two make for an adorable couple that you just cannot help but root for. Gavin is a perfect fit for Davy to try to get him to come out of his shell little by little. He also shows Davy that there is so much more to him than his shy nature and that Davy has a lot to offer to people. Davy, on the other hand, makes Gavin believe that Gavin is truly a good person when others in his life have told him he is anything but. Davy is also there at Gavin's side through his various family troubles and is his rock.

Overall, this was an enchanting, tender, and moving story that took us on a journey with two likable and multi-layered characters who dealt with some tough issues. This book made me laugh, made me feel angry on behalf of the MCs, made me melt with happiness, made me melancholy, and ultimately left me feeling joyful and wishing the MCs all the happiness in the world as they start their HEA. I highly recommend this delightful novel by Mr. Boehme.

Overall I enjoyed this. It's hard to resist an opposites attract story, especially where one MC becomes reformed and the other is just wanting to find his place in life and in love.

Gavin is the biggest player who ever played (due to a requisite painful past), and he's set his eyes on Davy, who's just shy of agoraphobic and knows Gavin is not relationship material. However Gavin can't not pursue Davy with dogged determination, despite Davy's resistance and reluctance.

Davy, sheltered by circumstance and often paralyzed by his own anxiety, just knows he will end up getting hurt, but can't help himself from falling hard anyways.

Friendship for these two unfolds first despite Gavin's intentions, and quickly evolves into a no holds barred love fest. Some parts were extremely swoony and others extremely hot. There were a few niggles here and there regarding both guys's personalities and quirks, as well as the far fetchedness of the ending. However, I got over it. Their journey was a bit rocky, angsty, and a little frustrating, but apparently my defenses were broken down by just how very sweet these two were together, bringing about a nice feel good vibe.

***3.5 Stars***

This is truly one of those times where GR needs half stars. Trouble & the Wallflower snuggly fits in the 3.5 star category for me. I liked it enough for three stars, but didn't really like it enough for a full 4 stars.

"Well, that's the oldest story in the book. You want what you can't have. Again, is it worth it? Does it hurt your heart or does it hurt your balls?"

Davy is a shy, introverted and socially awkward boy who was raised by a mother afraid of the world. Gavin is an outgoing, carpe diem guy who underneath the facade of confidence, is a scared little boy, a bit insecure and thinks he's unworthy of love.

Gavin's pursuit of Davy was fun to watch. These two were such opposites that when a situation would arise where a forgone conclusion would present itself, their own personalities got in the way. And when they do finally succumb to their attraction, Gavin makes a rash, douchebag move that could have ruined the future of this couple. But we get an epic grovel, sprinkled with sweet moments of honesty and it's easy to forgiven him.

"There is definitely something here, Davy. I don't know why, but you make me want to be different. Hell, you make me want to be a good guy"

"I don't know who convinced you that you aren't good. But you are."

Davy and Gavin were the rocks that each other needed. Watching how easily they fell in love was great. They quickly peeled all the layers of protection they wore for the outside world. In the midst of the cocoon of their relationship, they were safe. Safe to be exactly as they were.

"I could fall for you, and it's scary because everything scares me a little. But maybe we can be scared and strong together?"

As much as you think in the beginning this is going to be a journey of Davy coming out of his shell, the balance really tips more to Gavin becoming a man. Through his relationship with Davy, and some over the top mama drama, Gavin begins to come into his own. He realizes that he is not a victim of his past, but it has made him stronger. Wiser about the unfair side of life.

So even though the premise of the book was great and the story very sweet, I just felt like it was lacking something. I can't put my finger on it. The drama with Gavin's mom was a little far fetched, and could have been cultivated more. The side characters were great, but the Nate situation could have been elaborated on. Just little things that kept coming up short. So even though I didn't love this one, it was definitely an enjoyable read and I'll be checking out more by this author.

Very sweet, a little angsty, but not soap-operish by any means. I was worried when Davy self-identified as having social anxiety that I would have a hard time reading this book, as social anxiety has been a huge part of my own life for many years now. However, it turns out Davy is actually more just shy than anxious, and I enjoyed this story a lot. One thing I enjoy is that Kade Boehme writes in a very Southern voice, though it wasn't as evident here, as neither of the main characters are Southern, there was still a hint of it which must be entirely Kade himself. Overall a nice romance.

Sweet and lovely romance between two opposites.

Some angst with this one. Loved Ray. Totally got Davy. Wanted to punt Gavin's ass a couple times. And don't even get me started on the "mother" figure. Liked it, but Davy was too nice, too perfect, and too good.

The pace of this one was really nice. Progressing from Davy *repeatedly* tossing wannabe hipster Gavin's number in the trash, to them becoming friends, then more, then to them becoming essentially each other's 'One'.

Gavin's grandfather, Ray, was *the shit* and really did give the story a lot more charm, which Gavin's mom tried her damndest to crap on. I would have liked to have Gavin's bestie Sean involved a bit more deeply in the story, but he was a cool character as written.

After the introduction of Ollie, Gavin's little brother, the story took on kind of a 'Bear, Otter & the Kid' feel for me. LOVED THAT SERIES (BOATK 3 out soon in case you didn't know, yay!), so I was excited by that vibe.

The other book that the story felt a bit like for me was 'Social Skills' by Sara Alva, another ALL TIME FAVORITE, so if you liked BOATK and 'Social Skills', I suspect you'll really love this book, too.

Easily 5 Stars. ★★★★★

PS - I'd love to read Devon's story next, hint, hint.

I've had my eye on this title for some time and was happy to finally be able to pick it up. A wallflower being lured out of his shell sounded exactly like a trope I would love to read. And at the start of the book it was. I was enjoying the opening of the story and the characters, and thought it worthy of 4 stars. Only it didn't last.

By the middle point of the book I was struggling to stay engaged in the plot and the characters. There wasn't anything particularly wrong—the guys were being sweet and caring, the writing flowed... and yet I felt no desire to continue reading. It didn't help that the two background stories of ailing grandpa and estranged mother wasn't my cuppa. Sadly, I ended up skimmed the last third of the book just to finish it.

Cover:
Ummmmm. That cover is tres hot. tres hot.

If you've read the book, you know that the cover has SO MUCH MEANING.

I think this is the 1st book I've read where the cover truly, 100% matches something of the book.

Story:

My 1st Kade read. I loved it.

The connection between Davy and Gavin, maybe, it took a bit for me. But it was there.
Was it insta-love? Kind of.
So why did this one work for me when usually I freaking hate insta-love. Cause in this case it was believable.

Characters:

Davy: To cute, to sweet, and then when he let his monster out I loved him even more.

Gavin: Hello Gavin. I love me a bad boy. Especially a bad boy slut who falls. The fall is always such a pleasure to watch.
Was he a douche? yes. For some moments.
But hidden. He was just a sweet tortured soul who had a crappy fucking mom. The mom needs a good swift kick in the head.

Oliver: <3

Gramps: Can't talk about him. I can't. It hurts too much

Supporting cast: Awesome. Especially Sean and Mason. Can we get a book on Sean and Mason?????? CAN WE????????

I totally loved the ending. There were bits in between that made me roll my eyes, but on the whole I enjoyed it. Any book that can make me laugh 1 second, piss me off the next and then make me smile. Worth it.

And lets talk about the ending.

Thank you JESUS.

I thought I was going to have to go through the whole book without being able to visualize that.

So Kade, Thanks for making the ending of the book the way that you did.

I really liked this book. Unfortunately I was reading it during the 90% sale of the century and feel it didn't get the attention it deserved from me during the last 70% or so. That being said, it was a great story and I loved the writing. It was a lot more than I expected and that was a very good thing. You should read it.

Gah! I'm having a hard time rating this.

I'm not sure if I liked Gavin or not. He started out as an asshole, then a slut, and ended up needy. I can sympathize with him though.

Davy on the other hand, I LOVED. His quiet fortitude is so admirable! I wish I have some of that or I wish I'll be with somebody who has that.

I thought this was light based on the blurb. But oh, it was the opposite! It was quite fun in the first half, and then turned serious in the last half. I ended up liking the whole story (I got teary eyed in the last 10%) but it was not what I wanted.

Overall it was one of those that I liked, but not enough to love it.

3.5 STARS.

This was my first Kade Boehme book. I liked this Nice Soft Read well enough. Very sweet, a little angsty, and a bit soap-operish. In terms of the audio-book performance,it felt very amateurish, and I was not impressed with quality for a pay product. There was little to no pausing, inadequate punctuation and voice's interpretation during the story.

This is a story of two opposites falling in love and about the obstacles that threaten to separate them, written with love and care.

'He could sit in the club for hours being a wallflower, seeing the occasional guy look his way, and never once leave his spot.'

'When everyone else saw the two of them, they saw Gavin who was nothing but trouble and Davy who was a wallflower, but in Gavin’s estimation, if you looked inside you’d see that Gavin was just a scared little boy and Davy was his hero.'

Gavin and Davvy really touched my heart. Also,Ray, the old grandfather of Gavin. The world would have been a better place if all the old people were as open minded.I had a little bit of a problem with too much telling than showing. But what I think makes the story genuine and actually funny is that both MCs are, er, bottoms in bed.

If you looking for a sweet romance, never boring, never slowing down, and quite easy on the eyes that will hit all of your right spots.

This is definitely my favorite of Kade Boehme's books to date. I've read most of his work, and this is definitely in a category by itself. First thing first, This cover though. I absolutely am in love with this cover model. His swag is present, that beanie, that little leg pose. I even love the sweater. It really helped with how Gavin is percieved to me in the story. This had the right combination between sweet & sexy. I liked Davy's shyness. He was adorable, and he totally stepped up when ish hit the fan. I really was surprised at him social evolving throughout the story. Gavin's a typical person. He gets hurt, and to make sure he doesn't he sleeps his way around with no regards to anyone feelings. Okay, that's fine with me. I liked that Gavin owned his inner hoe. He didn't apologize for his past.

Kade did a really good job with the supporting characters. Ray is a winner in my books. His character was bittersweet to me. He was there to support Gavin, and teach him love & the definition of family. I'm a sucker for children in my stories; I just feel like the ending was kinda abrupt with no epilogue after that epilogue. I kinda wish we had gotten like a year later of some sort. I'd like to know how these guys are doing. If he could write a story out of anyone of the friends, definitely Sean needs his story told. I'd take Mason's as well. I'd like to see something in this universe.

I enjoyed it! Davy is a wallflower. Very shy, has a hard time in social situations, works at the local ice cream shop. His mother was agoraphobic, so he led a very sheltered childhood. Gavin is all outgoing and social, full of swagger. But if you look past that, you will see that he really is a good guy at heart. A very sweet, opposites attract story with a side of family drama. Just what I was in the mood for!
