Izzy Greene, a widow of a certain age, joins a writing group in an attempt to actually finish one of her stories. She gets more than she bargained for, however, when her nemesis, sexy blonde bombshell, Sondra Sockerman disappears under suspicious circumstances. Izzy soon realizes she has a natural detecting ability when she and her friend, Flo, try to find the killer...who is now after them.
I guess I have to remember that this is a cozy mystery. With that in mind it ticked all the boxes. The murderer was successfully disguised till the end. However, I did get very tired with the heroine always eating and always being consumed with food. You would think she was a heavily overweight woman. She was always talking about diets but then on the other hand was wearing g strings and all sorts of other "sexy" clothing. If the eating hadn't been such a focal point of the story I would have given this book 4 stars. The last few chapters I actually scimped over and only read the relevant bits.
Izzy and Flo are hilarious when they're together! Izzy managed to get into enough trouble alone like being on a hiking trail waiting for Flo but nearly getting killed. The whole mystery revolved around a manuscript and Izzy's writing class. There was one slapstick scene after another, but finally Izzy had her showdown with the killer and was awfully glad that she'd adopted a dead woman's cat because Sherlock saved the day. It'll be interesting to see what these ladies get into next! Will Izzy ever finish her story? I guess I'll just have to read more and find out!
Murder She Typed by Sylvia Selfman was a humorous surprise.
Izzy is a delightful woman of an age with a sense of humor and a little spice in her life. She and her friend find themselves involved in a mystery with unexpected twists and turns.
I enjoyed every moment spent with the characters and story and recommend this to readers who enjoy being entertained.
I decided Izzy would fit in well with Blanch from the Golden Girls! I wondered why I was reading it at times—I’m too young for that crowd by far! But it was entertaining. It took a while to get going though and ended rather quickly. But I liked it.
It all starts when Sondra Sockerman attends one of Izzy's writing group meetings. Not only is she a total knockout and attracts the attention of all the men in the group but she gets under Izzy'z skin and she cannot get her off her mind.
While Izzy is waiting for her best friend, Flo, so they can again try to keep with their exercising regimen, Sondra "strolls" past her up the hiking trail. Izzy can't wait for Flo any more, she has to prove to herself that she is just as good as Sondra. Unfortunately Izzy cannot keep up with Sondra and has to stop and rest. While resting another hiker passes her but shortly barrels past Izzy just after screams are heard !! Were they Sondra's ? Did the other hiker hurt or kill her ?
When Sondra doesn't return to the writng class, and Izzy tells the police what happened and they don't do anything, she starts investigating on her own.
This is a book that you not only will thoroughly enjoy but it will keep your interested from the beginning until the shockingly twisted end. Sylvia Selfman is an amazing author and I personally intend to continue reading her books.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
Amusing story with a different sort of protagonist
There aren't many stories in the mystery genre with a retired protagonist, making Izzy a delightful deviation from the "normal" cozy heroine. She's funny and sassy and smart, to boot. Like many other cozy heroines, she has a definite penchant for trouble. The book could have used one more run through to eliminate typos, but there weren't so many as to make the book difficult to to read. I would read another book about this character.
Izzy Greene, single senior and budding writer, is going about her life as usual. Walking to Starbucks everyday with her best friend Flo, attending her writing group, dating. When a new buxom beauty joins the writing group and has all the men going Ganga, including Izzy's steady Merv, Izzy sets out to follow him. When their morning exercise takes her to a hiking trail and she hears Sondra scream- she sets out to determine what happened, even if it kills her. Lively read, interesting characters, I look forward to reading more in this series.
I confess I enjoyed this story more than I expected. The characters were endearing, the setting convincing and well-described, and the storyline simple but interesting. I like this author’s writing style – well-paced and with a lightness of touch and a sprinkling of humour – that held my attention throughout. Closer proofreading could have smoothed out some of the irritating little typos, but all in all, an entertaining story. I will happily read more from Sylvia Selfman.
I rarely find a book that I have no idea who the murderer is and a lot of times I am wrong, but I do, at least suspect somebody. This book had me without any idea who the guilty party was and what a surprise I got as the solution to this mystery was revealed! I will definitely read this author again.
Please seniors are awesome. The story keeps you guessing until the last page you never know what the girls are going to get into next so grab a chair grab a good drink and sit down and bedazzled by this book I really am glad I found this author
Usually I find some Cozy Mysteries lacking substance but this one was a good one. Sure it has the usual. A single, slightly older female, a pet, a crazy supporting cast of characters and a single girlfriend. But the plot held its own with page-turning humor. Even if you don't like Cozy Mysteries, you will find this one enjoyable.
OMG! awesome writings!! love the way Sylvia Selfman gets the story going and keeps it going!! Her books keep my attention until the very end, which is where the culprit is revealed. I couldn't even have imagined who did the murders and when the story neared the end, wow!! Thanks Sylvia for another wonderfully clean and power packed mystery. "you go girl!!" LOL!! Thanks!!
I enjoyed this book enough that I'm going to give book number two a try, but I'm hoping Izzy grows up just a little as the series progresses. I find her a little boy crazy for a woman her age. Aside from that, the characters are fun and likable. It was a fun mystery that kept me guessing. I changed my mind on who the murderer was several times through the book.
Izzy is a senior with love for chocolate and living life. She just happens to have to solve mysteries when she accidently gets involved. Well written with red herrings and twists in the plot makes this book an enjoyable read.
This story had a good mix of fun with mystery and was a "cozy" book to read. I also enjoyed the characters ... and the fact that I believe we are similar in age and ailments.
Izzy's approach to sleuthing and life in general is intriguing, somewhat klutzy and always amusing Her tenacious efforts to solve the mystery prove worthwhile in the end.
Izzy loves her food cold and her men hot. With Flo's help -- the stories in her mind go from paper to real life as a woman that she's seen twice starts to influence Izzy's life. An excellent weekend read with a twist.
The characters are funny and fun to take this ride with. I thought I knew, then the clues pointed elsewhere.....and then ..... there you have it. Will read more from this author.
Izzy Greene gets herself into awkward situations that make for some slapstick sleuthing. Her sidekick Flo goes along with Izzy's plans though it seems to be against Flo's nature. Izzy and Flo are a hoot!
I enjoyed the story, and the ending was surprising, but the book was full of inconsistencies and formatting errors. It was easy enough to look past when the story was engaging. I'd recommend it to anyone who's a fan of light-hearted, easy to read mysteries.
I really enjoyed this book. There were a few areas that I thought could of been omitted but really good read. Getting ready to start the second one now.
I enjoyed Izzy's personality and persistence in trying to solve the mystery of Sondra Sonderman. I found myself laughing out loud at some of her antics.
