I always eagerly anticipate each new installment of this series. It doesn't matter who gets his story next though I confess that I did anticipate Nick's story the most. That being said, I love the band of brothers that make up the Alpha Pack and I love how the stories may focus on one of them, but they are all there fighting together in the background.
In this book, we get Micah's story. Micah endured brutal torture from his captors before he was rescued by his pack brothers. He is nearly broken, struggles with nightmare memories, and is now struggling with the addiction to his meds. Everyone worries about him and he hates that. But just when he thinks he is through and has hit the bottom, his mate is revealed to him. He is taken with the strong, independent Jacee and is only sorry that she is stuck with him. He will do whatever it takes to make her happy even beating his addiction and working hard to heal for her.
Jacee works at the local watering hole where the Alpha Pack comes to drink between missions. She knows who and what they are and a few know that she is a coyote shifter. It has been awkward since out of loneliness she slept with one of the members who now has a mate. She knows the Alpha Pack see her as a slut and she didn't care until the night one of the reclusive members joins them for a drink and Micah Chase intervenes when a drunk bar patron gives her a hard time. The kind male is her destined mate. His scared visage and dark past do not put her off. She is so happy to realize that she no longer has to be alone.
In the shadows, a figure from Micah's past watches for his chance to obtain vengeance. Nick's visions provide him with this knowledge, but it is up to Micah to avoid the death that Nick foresees for him.
Alright, so this one had all the makings of a strong blend of the character-driven and the action plot between Micah's need to heal and take care of the dangerous enemy. And it did that to a certain extent. I was into this one right up to the point where it lost it's momentum. The story finished out, but it wasn't as tight and crisp as it potentially could have been. I felt that it went down certain intriguing paths just so far and then stopped.
I don't want to give spoilers so I'll pick one thing as an example. Micah has this gift to dreamwalk. It is never really explained or utilized to its full potential. For instance, he dreamwalks into Jacee's dreams for some erotic night time fun, but he doesn't dream walk into anyone else's dream. I mean if he can do this why doesn't he dreamwalk into the killer's dreams or into the guy's dreams he suspects knows more than he says. Now maybe he has to have some sort of connection to the person, but there is no explanation to his gift to say for sure.
And that is just one of the things that left me wanting more. A lot is made of certain aspects of the story and not others. The suspense could have been stronger. The reader knows who the enemy is and why long before the characters and I'm not sure I liked that reveal so early on because it killed the tension in the story to a certain extent. Even the romance left me feeling this way. Jacee kept a secret, but Micah finds out from someone other than her, but Micah and Jacee never discuss it.
Now, it wasn't a total wash out. I don't want to give the impression that I hated the book because that isn't true. I actually liked it. Yes, parts disappointed me, but other parts were really good. I loved seeing Micah find his mate and that he began to heal and grow light-hearted with her. He had such a hard time feeling like he belonged, but as he healed, he learned just how important the pack, their mates, and his own mate made him feel like he had a big, supportive family. Micah's personal story of triumph was probably my favorite part.
And speaking of that family, I enjoyed the strong presence of other pack members around the headquarters and out on the missions. I know he isn't pack, but I love Blue sightings and I really like that hint of something going on for Calla's brother and a certain gal. And really, I am so ready for Nix to get his act together and stop dinking around since he knows who his mate is. Odd set up there and I want to know the reason for that one.
In summary, I liked, but didn't love this one because I saw potential for a much stronger story. I definitely still feel strongly vested in this series that offers a camaraderie of brothers, interesting plots, and intriguing worldbuilding. I would recommend this series be read in order and I would recommend it for paranormal romance lovers who like spice in the romance and intense action in the plot.
My thanks to Penguin Group for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
