Clever verse and beautiful illustrations showing animals alone on one page and then camouflaged on the next teach children about how animals like bears, deer, and zebras hide in the wild in a new entry in the All Aboard series. Reprint.
I can't think of a better story time book for the library during the time when the classroom teacher is teaching the concept of camouflage and any other animal adaptation. Heller's illustrations, intelligent rhymes and science facts as always blend together into a delightful picture book experience.
I read this book, and the others in this series many, many times when I was a child. I used to ask my mom or dad to read the book to me before bed. I love the poem at the end (or is it the beginning?) of the book: "Because the world is hostile All creatures need protection They need to hide so thoroughly So they defy detection So, some of them use camouflage To fade away with ease From predators who like to dine Upon these predatees But predators to live must eat So also fade and are discreet So that the prey on which they sup Can't see who going to Eat Them Up!" After that my dad would always pretend the book was trying to eat me. This is one of the oldest memories I have from my childhood, and one of the reasons I love the book so much. (I just wrote the poem from memory, so it has a few errors, more than likely.) This book was great because it was interactive, in that you had to try and find the hidden animal on the page. It really keeps you attention, as you race to find the animal before anyone else. This is one of my favorite children's books. It was fun, and taught a great lesson about nature, and the animals that live in it.
