Set in the town of Middleton, to the north of Manchester, MARCIA tells the story of a first-love that continues to haunt two people long after their lives have gone in different directions. Recording the rituals and intimacies of courtship and marriage, the novel evokes the changing faces of Middleton through four decades as it moves towards its post-industrial present.
Very interesting journey into the Middleton my family occupied at the same time that the story is set. The author absolutely captures the feel of the times and the place. I was reminded of 'a Kind of Loving' and other Northern family dramas. It has the raw honesty of working-class communities that is under-represented in popular fiction.
I enjoyed the book as it was based on Middleton in Manchester where I live so it was easy to relate to the places referred to in the book. It's very much a love story and I believe it's based on the author's own life.
