Evil acts committed by evil people leave dark remnants in their wake…
Kyra Roberts’ past choices have led to her brother’s willful disappearance. She’s come to the deadliest city in the world to find him and won’t leave until she does. Disguising herself as a junkie, she walks the alleys of the Slip Mire, searching.
Her search is interrupted when she overhears that the city’s police force is walking into a deadly trap. Not wanting to blow her cover, she shouts a warning at a handsome cop in a parking lot.
Homicide Detective Gabe Nichols assumes her words are a threat and demands to know more, but she escapes from his powerful grasp and runs. A day later, Kyra comes face to face with him again. Without her disguise, Gabe doesn’t recognize her, but a corpse turns up at her place of work, and the detective suspects Kyra of hiding something. She is, but not what he thinks. The last thing she needs is an intense detective obsessively scouring the city for her, interrupting her search for her brother.
But a sinister force lurks in the shadows. A killer is on the hunt in the Slip Mire. And he’s watching them closely.
If you love gritty urban settings, serial killers, and brooding detectives, scroll up and grabe your copy to join Kyra and Gabe on this pulse-pounding sprint through Abstreuse City. Because darkness lurks in us all.
“L.K. Hill is an alarmingly talented and evil woman. Because once again I am frothing at the mouth for a sequel… This book is triggering. (And no I'm not going to tell you not to read it because this book is THAT FREAKING GOOD)” –Makeyoubec, Amazon Reviewer

L.K. Hill is a USA Today Best-Selling Author who writes across three genres. Her crime and historical fiction are written under her initials, L.K., while her scifi/fantasy and dystopian are written under her full name, Liesel K. Hill. She also writes historical fiction under the pen name, K.L. Conger.
She lives in northern Utah and comes from a large, tight-knit family. She plans to keep writing until they nail her coffin shut. Or the Second Coming happens. You know, whichever happens first. ;D
Lovin’ that eye on the cover and it makes me feel like someone is watching me.Could it be the female protagonist, Kyra, or Gabe, the detective? Well, I say we all hook up and do some sleuthing.
Abstreuse City is a very dangerous place. L K Hill does a great job describing it. the homeless, the garbage, the smells and the dark, the pimps and the prostitutes.
Kyra and Gabe’s path collide when she finds out about a plan to turn the cops raid of a drug house into a slaughter house. She knew she had to intervene. And…could they be looking for the same person?
I’m not sure who Kyra is looking for, or why she is so curious about the dead prostitute, but I will find out.
I wasn’t sure if this would grab me like it did with the funny names, like Slip Mire, but I quickly got involved. Dark Remnants is fast paced and action packed, just the way I like it.
Kyra is hard as nails and quick on her feet, yet able to win the trust of others. She is able to read people, using it to her advantage. She looked like a junkie, from her spiky black hair to her black clothes with the hoodie and the track marks inside her elbows. Her eyes are so blue you couldn’t overlook them and she wears makeup to create a sickly pallor. She does no whining and crying, just has an intense desire to get the job done. Love a strong female character!
I love it!
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Dark Remnants by L K Hill.
Review: So I don't like crime novels. I love procedural shows and I enjoy observing people, but I don't really delve into this genre. However L.K. Hill wrote the book so I was like, ehh I'll try it.
L.K. Hill is an alarmingly talented and evil woman.
Because once again I am frothing at the mouth for a sequel. Once again I want to hit something because I have too many questions and I want to tweet to the heavens and back that if you don't read this book and like it I question your sanity.
This book is triggering. I'm not even going to go through the list, but if you're squeamish of anything taboo you need to steel yourself before reading it. (And no I'm not going to tell you not to read it because this book is THAT FREAKING GOOD) However, the triggering material is dealt with tastefully and with respect to the matter of which it pertains to.
Kyra is an amazing, multi faceted character. I love being inside her head, viewing her thought process. She's observant and she understands people. I mean this woman understands people on a mentalist level and you don't even realize it until the middle of the book. She's smart, resourceful, and gritty. She's got steel in her spine. This is the woman that I think we need to see more of in fiction. She's not the girl who allows herself to collapse when the world around her spirals. She handles her business...and then, like any human being, collapses afterwards. It's an admirable trait.
Gabe is a solid beginning for a character. Though we see into his mind and we are given glimpses into his machinations, we don't really know him yet. This is his story too, that much is clear. However, how much of it is his we have yet to learn.
The secondary characters are likeable and fleshed out enough that you can feel for them, fill in their features and give them personality. In fact, this entire book is rife with imagery that gives you a specific mental picture of what kind of world we're being drawn into.
L.K. Hill once again writes a book that is intricate and detailed, starting a whole other series that most authors will probably froth with envy over once she's complete. I don't even know how to accurately describe this book. I just know that it has that potential, the same one Interchron has, and the same one that has spawned any epic and critically acclaimed series of the decade. I look forward to more. I probably would pay her bills for a year and give her extra money so that she could finish this series and let me read it. I don't have those means however.
I can find nothing lacking in this book. L.K. Hill is as talented as ever and I, as a reviewer/reader/amateur writer, am at odds with my awe of this series and quality of the writing as well as being rabid for the next installment, and caught between utter fan worship-belieber level-devotion and hating her more than a little bit for consistently being this good.
Hats off again Liesel. Again you have set up a perfect first novel for what I fervently hope will continue to be a fast paced and gripping series.
Detailed Review: Liesel has done it again. After I finished the book, I was literally pining for the next book, desperate to know what would happen next. I wanted to throw a tantrum and yell for the next book to come out NOW, but of course it wouldn't happen. If this book really managed to reduce me to such childlike behavior, that means Dark Remnants in a very very very good book.
In this book, the author's writing is developed and her descriptions of Abstreuse city made me imagine the Slip Mire perfectly well. I could even draw you a picture of it (although I'm not born for art, that's Chloe). But you'll understand what I mean when you read the book. Not IF. WHEN.
What made the book stands out in the crime thriller genre, is its characters. Kyra made it to my 'best heroine' list, with her intelligence and determination. She is a character with depth and a person who I would love to know better in the next few books. Gabe Nichols is also a very special character with secrets of his own and to me is an amazing detective. And both of them are more similar than they've ever thought in their pasts and family history. Liesel also managed to impress me with the secondary characters because of their differing personalities and the way they affected the main characters Kyra and Gabe.
This is a truly talented author at work here. No doubt about that. I mean, the twists! Will they ever stop? They're just so sudden and unexpected that it hits you hard like a stab to your heart. And I'm not exaggerating here. Also, the author manages to highlight the horrors of a place like Slip Mire with accuracy. If that's not talent, what is that?
Why isn't Liesel K. Hill famous yet? WHY?!? She should no longer be a self-publlished author! She should be as famous as Amanda Hocking or even Dan Brown!
A heart-pounding crime thriller that involves interwoven mysteries and stories awaits you if you dare to take the challenge...
Brief Review: Liesel has once again impressed me with her amazing writing abilities and if given anything to devour by Liesel Hill, I would gobble it up in minutes! This author really should be more recognized in the world and I really hope by next year, she would have made it up to the 'famous author' level on the ladder!
This was a really good story and I enjoyed listening to it! The characters are well developed (my pet peeve!) and interesting. The story world was interesting and believable. The reading flowed smoothly along and kept me engrossed in the story - the narrator was excellent! I definitely recommend this story!
I received a free copy from StoryOrigin and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
It was a little hard to follow and keep my interest. I'm not sure why that was. The story was a decent mystery story. I'm not a fan of books that don't tie up any of the story until you read the next book or several books. It got a little confusing with 4 plots in the one book.
I've loved some of L. K. Hill's other books. Dark Remnants had great potential. But, I don't feel it reached the level of her other books. The book ended without any closure. Maybe the next book will redeem the series.
Liesel, Liesel, Liesel. You wizard. You master of all genres. WHY are you still a self-published author? The major pub houses should be duking it out for a chance to publish your books. Your move into crime fiction was spot on. I've never read a Michael Connelly or James Patterson book, but I can almost guarantee I'd rather be reading one of your books.
Dark Remnants
was all sorts of dark and gritty, and featured characters that, dare I say it, I might love even more than those in your
Interchron
series (but only a TINY bit more).
Dark Remnants
was one of those books that were impossibly easy to visualize in your head. It read like your favourite tv crime drama, but with so much more to hold on to. I perused Liesel's blog, and discovered that her inspiration for the
Street Games
series was nothing other than the amazing tv crime drama, Criminal Minds. She outlined QUITE the love for character Derek Morgan, though I'm more of a Spencer Reid fan myself (ugh..that brain of his..so great). The chapters were the perfect length, with content in each that had you wondering how the next one could possibly top the last.
Supra/Kyra stole the spot for my favourite character in this book. Roaming the streets of a notoriously dangerous city, approaching gang members and sketchy street walkers with only the slightest hesitation. She was fascinating to no end, her confidence and courage literally stopped my heart at some points. It's so rare to come across a female lead with so much guts, and drive. When the reason behind her actions was finally revealed, I was floored. Gabe Nichols was Derek Morgan, I saw so much of him in the way Liesel wrote this detective's character. I respected him, and was at the edge of intrigue when his and Kyra's paths crossed. The twists were on point, and came at you strong and hard, the way a great crime fiction should dish it out.
Liesel crafted a city that was insanely dark, it was the perfect backdrop for the storyline, and I found myself feeling physically scared and alone sometimes as she described it's back alleys, smells, and lurking danger. The violence, to be honest, was shocking, but so real you had to respect her writing skills. She didn't hold back, and I cringed at every punch to the stomach, and knife to the neck. I said it up there, but I'll say it again. This author isn't playing in the little leagues of fiction, and I seriously wish more people knew about her.
Guys, do me a favour and check out
Dark Remnants
. Then, for the sci-fi, paranormal fans, go check out her
Interchron
series (review of the first book here). I can GUARANTEE that Liesel will become one those authors that will have you reading ANYTHING they put out.

Abstreuse. M St. (Slip Mire) Kyra Roberts looked around night life was the usual riff/raff. The Mirelings (junkies) only saw Kyra when she let them. K St. wasn’t much better. Demetri assumed Kyra admired the lifestyle of drug, alcohol & prostitution. Tina (prostitute) greeted Kyra “Supra”.
Rumor has it the cops are going to raid the Sons of Ares (sadistic gang, guns, drugs) warehouse. Abstreuse PD. Detective Shaun Thatcher (supervisor) confirmed to his team: Detective Gabe Nichols (homicide), Detective Tyke Burrel, Detective Cora Williams, & Detective Kent Tanner, there will be a raid in the Carmichael district. While on the street a female gave Gabe some very shocking news. Charles (Abstreuse PD CSU), Bailey (f, Abstreuse PD CSU), Mike (ME), were at/on the murder scene. Female, 19, prostitute, stabbed multiple times. Mallory Butler was her name. Norse (leader) & his 5 Ares’ lackeys introduced their-selves to Supra. Jace Anderson (john, abusive) was being interrogated for the murder of Mallory. Carlotta estate. Kyra (delivery van driver) also worked for Mr. Carlotta (stock broker) & Mrs. Carlotta (Italians). Raoul Parker took her delivery packages. The place was crawling with law enforcement, ME & CSU. Ms. Tanya Roberts (cosmetics sales rep.) ID the body it was Kenny (gardener). Carlotta’s staff was being interviewed: Caleb Smith (head of staff), Megan (kitchen help), & Donald Tracer (accountant). It seems Kenny had the hots for Tanya, but she was defiantly not interested. Later, Jeanine Tully (nanny) was found in Evelyn Carlotta’s (6, daughter) hiding place with her throat cut. The daughter is nowhere to be found.
Will the killer(s) be found & brought to justice. What about Evelyn?

A very awesome book cover, & great font/writing style. A very well written crime mystery book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great crime mystery movie, or better yet a w mini TV series. To be continued. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

As I read this book, there were several times I found myself asking where the story was going, and I was a bit bored for the first third of the book or so.
Kyra is trying to find her brother by getting into the gang he joined, and collects information about that gang from friends she makes.
Gabe is a cop who's involved in a raid on a gang who has drugs at a warehouse. But, Kyra, in disguise, tells him she heard the gang knew and were going to ambush the bust. This is how they meet.
After that, there are murders, unresolved cases, and a horrible kidnapping of a little girl. I hate the unnecessary of violence towards children in any book, so that made it a 1 star for me.
I added the second only because I liked how smart both Kyra and Gabe are, and because the guy who assaults the child is killed.
But things are too disjointed, and the ending is unsatisfying.
An intriguing story but left on a cliffhanger. There was no major breakthroughs other then the cop figuring out who Supra is. I love the direction this story is going and all the mystery that keeps the storyline going but With so many things up in the air I have to say I’m disappointed that’s something more wasn’t given to make the story the little extra to give it all the stars. A slow unfold mystery with tons of angles will keep you wanting more. I hope that in the second one there will be more of a delivery but the book overall kept My attention as I drove across Texas and into Oklahoma. The narrator is good. There are moments of going so much above and beyond that it feels more like something your actually there to hear instead of just some one reading. The running scene was amazing!
When Kyra goes deep undercover in the most dangerous city in America to find her brother, is she stepping into something from which she'll never return? She knows her brother must be somewhere in the deep underbelly of Abstruese City and she is determined to do what it takes to find him! However it comes to a point where Kyra must also find a way to save innocent lives in this place where her very existence rests on a razor's edge. Can Kyra conceal her true identity and still maintain the delicate balance she has achieved over the months undercover when the police reach out for her help? Find out in this gritty murder mystery!
I really enjoyed listening to this one. I was thrilled when I realized that the same author had written The Botanist, as I loved that one as well. I know there are a lot of people probably complaining about the monster of a cliffhanger that this book left us in. But I enjoyed this book enough that I am not mad about it. It just means that I have a whole other book that I can get into. Also, The narrator was great. I have no complaints there or really anywhere in this book. This was a great start to a new series and I can't wait for more.
Thank you StoryOrigin for the audiobook. You guys are amazing!
Dark, gritty, and filled with action!! Dark Remnants is one of those books that starts with enough intrigue and action to hook the reader from the get-go. While I’ve had this book in my library for quite some time, after listening to the audiobook and its excellent narration by Larry Oblander I can’t believe I’ve left this one on my to-be-read list, it’s not something that will happen to the rest of the books in the series. If you enjoy detective stories with a dark and gritty tone and characters who will leave you guessing where their loyalties lay, this book is well worth your time. I received a review copy of this audiobook from the author and chose to provide my review.
Dark Remnants is Book 1 of Street Games series and now after reading this book I want to read the sequels. Very nice story telling with a great plot. Writing was done very nicely in Dark Remnants by L K Hill. Main character Kyra heads into the lions den of gangs and encounters some messy troubles but she is one determined lady in her quest. No spoilers but you will definitely enjoy this book. Evokes emotions but is not brutal doing so. Nice writing. Kudos to L K Hill for writing Dark Remnants. ENJOY. You won’t be disappointed.
I found this story to be very entertaining. It featured the type of protagonist that I really enjoy. Kyra was strong, determined, and intelligent. She went undercover looking for her brother, who had been associated with some dangerous people. The story was filled with twists and turns and plenty of action. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Larry Oblander's narration was fine, and his performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
This is a shorter, quick read as an introduction to the series but an awesome story in its own right. Just because it is short does not mean it is not fully action-packed with awesome characters. This series (my opinion based on this book) is engrossing and will lead you to want to hurry and get the next book in the series. Another awesome series by this author.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Dark Remnants paints a picture in your mind as you read. Super female heroine that is not a blood thirsty killer but one with a lot of compassion. Her venture looking for her brother that is in a drug gang does not end in the first book and it simply leaves you wanting more. I have now read 4 of Hill's book and they are all very very good. She is an up and coming author so give her a try and you will get hooked.
A really good read about Kyra and Gabe in Abstreuse City. Kyra, undercover to find her brother, has information that she feels compelled to share with police office Gabe. She doesn't want to get involved with the police for fear of being discovered by the gang she is trying to get close to, but her conscience forces her to contact Gabe. It is a start of a complicated relationship, with lots of twists and turns to the plot. Great characters and great plot.
Firstly I love the cover. This book was really good! It definitely left me hanging on my seat for book 2. Both Gabe and Kyra were written so well, and I really enjoyed both the characters for different reasons. More for Gabe than Kyra though. The story is fast paced, keeping the story going at and keeps you very interested along the way. Reading this book, it was so well written, that ot felt like I was watching a crime show, and I could see all of what was happening so clearly in my head.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook which had a great storyline and was well written. The narrator gave a great performance.
I'm hoping that the next book in the series gets released as an audiobook soon so I can enjoy the continuation of the story which seems unfinished as it stands.
I received a free copy of this audiobook either from the author or a promotion or giveaway and am voluntarily writing an honest and unbiased review.
I liked this book. Be aware when you start this that it is only the first book in a series. My favorite character in this book is Kyra - she is one determined strong woman. There are many things going on here, and no answers to be had in this book. But I expect since this is a five book series that everything will get settled later, and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the Street Games books.
I enjoyed this book very much. The story line moves quick enough to keep my interest, yet doesn’t rush. I hope to enjoy the next book in this series soon. I also enjoyed that even though many of the characters are gang members, pimps, prostitutes, druggies, etc. the language has been kept clean. I enjoyed the interactions between Kyra, Supra, Tonya, and Gabe. The author has done a remarkable job and I’m sure she had some laughs while writing these characters.
I have read several of this authors books and this is a bit different from what I have read. I really enjoyed the story and hope more is to come. The narrator did an awesome job with the entire story. The story was well written and kept my interest throughout. The plot kept you guessing a bit, and there was a big lead into another book if I ever saw one. I received a free copy of this audio book from Story Origin for an honest review.
A superb dark story with an strong intelligent driven female lead character and a decent police detective. The story is wonderfully atmospheric you can almost smell the rubbish. Vivid descriptions of the streets, alleys and people add a feeling of tension and dread. Narration is perfect with a narrator who givens each voice its own quality. I am looking forward to a sequel as a large part of the story remains unfinished but not a cliff-hanger. Highly Recommended
L.K. Hill looks so normal in her picture at the back of books. Its good that she is not a criminal she would never be caught. I am not sure how this much ability to suck you into a story is possible. The Gaap caricature will be haunting my mind for a very long time. Do yourself a favor and buy the whole series right up front. If you love a good mystery your going to buy them all anyway. I have a new favorite author.
Will Receive Gabe Nichols solve his murder cases? Will Kyra find Manny?
Detective Gabe Nichols is a member of the murder team with the PD. Before a major raid on a gangs hideout he is warned that the raid will not end good. While investigating a murder he again sees the young woman who had warned him, Kyra. At another murder site he meets another young woman who can identify the murder victim. Tanya makes deliveries to the murder victim home weekly.
A great introduction to the characters as Gabe meets the avatars of Kyra in the worst areas of the most lawless town. She is trying to penetrate the Sons of Ares gang, but keeps creating problems for herself because of her inate goodness. This is a brief episode that displays both the characters and the author's writing ability. I will definitely read more as Gabe and Kyra continue to interact.
She is a spike haired, hollow faced junkie with electric blue eyes. She is a delivery driver for one of the wealthiest families in town. She is a sister that won't give up on her missing brother.
He is a detective working in the most violent area of the city. He is a brother that has never stopped hoping to find his missing brother.
This is a really great read. The writing is tight and the plots twists and turns didn't stop till the last page. The characters are well deveoped, with depth and plenty of personality. I stayed up waay too late to finish it but it was totally worth the tired eyes the next day. I can't wait to read Book 2.
A thrilling adventure. Wonderful characters and an intriguing and exciting storyline filled with action and mystery. A great start to a suspenseful series that draws you in and makes you part of their world. The first part of a much bigger picture.
