For•ev•er (fɔːˈrɛvə; fə-): without end; everlasting; eternally
It might have taken twenty-two years to find Liberty, but now that Shayne has her, he’s not willing to let her go without a fight.
Shayne and Liberty finally found their forever, leaving Shayne’s past indiscretions behind and moving forward to start a life together. But what if forever wasn’t truly in the stars for them?
What should be one of the happiest times in their lives as newlyweds quickly turns into a race against time. Liberty must choose between accepting her fate and protecting her family, and taking a risk that could ultimately end in more heartache.
Liberty’s decision will test the strength of their trust, but is it enough to keep Shayne from breaking down altogether and losing the woman he loves?
Maureen Mayer was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, and most recently relocated to Columbia, MD with her loving and supportive husband. She's always had a great love for the outdoors and can often be found hiking, fishing, camping, or lying on the beach. She's a sucker for off-color humor, but holds a sweet spot for sick and twisted horror films. When she's not writing, you can find her curled up in bed with her kindle, diving into a steamy romance novel and falling in love with the latest book boyfriend.
I was given an arc for an honest review. And this book does not deserve 5 stars it deserves a billion stars.
This was such a very well written book and must say beautifully written as well.I felt like the author was shayne Thompson in another life. The way she captured shayne and put his voice and all of him out on paper was phoniminal. She said it was hard writing a male pov, to be honest I think she nailed it. It was so realistic and detailed I felt like I sat on my couch watching a movie played out in my mind the way it did.
There's not one flaw with this book.Completely flawless this was. I'm so glad this was a full length novel because it was awesome. this book had me laughing and crying throughout out itall.More importantly i felt the characters emotions through out the whole book. Not one thing was left unanswered. I'm still book hunged over. But I must say from the first word to the last kept me on my toes wanting more and sucking me in til I reached the final conclusion.
Well done Maureen, this made my top 5 for this year and this book sits at number one.Highly recommend it to anyone .
***WARNING: Keep tissues handy while reading this book.***
After reading Relinquishing Liberty, I was completely in love with Shayne and Liberty. Don't get me wrong I love all the characters in the Second Chance Series, but Shayne stole my heart and I will not be asking for it back. He's mine! Back off! Before you panic, Bittersweet Catastrophe can be read as a standalone. Maureen provides the reader with enough backstory so that you completely understand the story. However, I recommend you read Relinquishing Liberty and Unforeseen Heartbeat too because they are both amazing books. Shayne and Liberty are happily married. The perfect to the couple. The Ying to the other's Yang. You get the point. Their sexual chemistry is off the charts and threated to melt my panties a time or two. Shayne is still his hot, mouth-watering, panty-dropping self. The way he treats Liberty makes my heart melt. Could he be more perfect? Nope! Again that is why his is mine. He worships Liberty. Cherishes her life a hubsand should. Hell he even cooks!!
He would do anything to make Liberty happy...almost everything. He refuses to lose his family. He refuses to lose Liberty When Liberty's decision threaten to break up their happy life Shayne loses it. His world is crashing around him and the one person who used to hold it together is the one swinging the sledgehammer. Okay, wait a second! Before you start hating Liberty, let me tell you she is only sticking up for what she believes in and what she loves the most...her family. "Wait, what? Omg, this cannot be happening." "Please tell me I read this wrong." *Quick re-read* "Omg! It's true!" "No, No, No!" I said all that and more during the biggest, ugliest cry that I have had in a long time. Maureen Mayer's Bittersweet Catastrophe took me on a roller coaster of emotions. Kept me on my toes and kept my heart racing throughout the whole book. I don't think there was one emotion I did not feel while reading Bittersweet Catastrophe. I know the review had an abrupt ending but I couldn't go any further without spoiling it for you. Just trust me when I say... Bittersweet Catastrophe is a must read that will touch your heart and embed itself into your soul.
Shayne Thompson is one of my very favorite book boyfriend's. I was first introduced to Shayne in Relinquishing Liberty (Second Chances #1) and was thrilled when Maureen told me she was writing a novel from his point of view. But that was all she told me. Sneaky woman failed to mention that she'd rip my heart from my chest, and cause me to have a chest wracking sobs at 3 am as I finished this novel. I was gutted.
3 small words.
That's it. 3 small words is all it takes to rip your world apart, pulling you through the trenches of Hell. But 3 small words also will force you to find the strength to stand strong and offer strength to the woman you love, regardless of how rocky that road ahead may be.
Shayne's character has grown so much since we first met him, and although I was head over heals in love with him in RL, I truly love him even deeper now. That man has a love for Liberty, so fierce and strong that I could feel the love with each word he spoke to her. The emotions are just that strong. He's all alpha, protective, sexy and lovable. But he also knows when he needs to call on friends for help. He's such a great man. We can thank Liberty for his maturity I think. He simply needed to feel that whole-hearted love, the kind that swallows you up with warmth and tenderness to emerge into the man he's become.
Bittersweet Catastrophe is just that...bittersweet.I was grief stricken, heart broken, and terrified for Liberty and Shayne. Bittersweet Catastrophe will make you want to hug the love of your life a little tighter. After the panic subsided, I was able to take a calming deep breath, and a happy smile splayed across my face. This book is FABULOUS. I wanted and needed an ugly cry, and this book gave me just that!
This synopsis makes me a tad bit nervous but loved it! It is a bit shorter than the others so I read it within 2-3 hrs. This is a continuation of Shayne and Liberty from book 1 starting with their pregnancy that was announced in the 2nd book. This book left me in unexpected tears and was truly a bittersweet and beautiful.
"The day that fire inside you burns out, my flame will extinguish right along with you...because I can't live in a world where you don't exist."
I wanted to strangle Shayne more in this book due to his attitude and insinuations toward Liberty but then I doubled over in laughter over his alpha male tendencies that made it up.
"Love tends to grab a hold of you when you least expect it...the key is to never let it go."
I cannot wait for Brett's story. I have felt sorry for him since the beginning because he found Liberty first and he still loves her since day one. I want to see him fall down on his knees with his own true love so he can let Liberty go and be her best friend without tearing his heart out in the process. Hope you enjoy as I did. This is a great series!
The one thing about this book that bugged me was the last chapter, before the epilogue. I honestly thought Libby died, but then the epilogue turns that around and she's okay again. I mean, i was bawling, barely able to read the pages, and then boom. All good! All that lead up, making me so emotional, and then its like,"Never mind every things good!". But I really loved the book, and as much as i didn't like the way it turned around so quickly, it was a good ending.

*****WARNING You will want to have a box of tissue handy******* Don't have a box of tissue then maybe one of those travel size packs, or a hanky, or a shirt you don't care about. You will want something to wipe away your tears and to blow your nose. This book brings light to many things. Men need to pay attention to their woman's bodies, and listen to mother's intuition.
Bittersweet Catastrophe is in Shaynes POV. I love to know what a man is thinking and how he is feeling. Shayne recalls the day Liberty ran into him. All their firsts. This story in the time frame is maybe a handful of months down the road from Unforeseen Heartbeat. Maddy has had her baby already, Hunter is off at school. Liberty is working, Shayne is working. We can't forget Bret. He is still mulling after Liberty even though she is now married to Shayne. One night while in bed Liberty feels something on her breast. She brings this up to Shayne who really doesn't see anything so he distracts her with sex. Little did he know things are about to get real for him. Especially when they found out that Liberty is pregnant. THAT IS ALL I AM SAYING ON THAT MATTER. Bret he still has feelings for Liberty even though she is married. I guess in a way you could say he doesn't want to realize that Liberties feelings for him are brotherly and not boyfriendnly. <-----I know not a real word!!! This in life happen and they happen for a reason either it be fate or just pure luck. We know Shayne lost his mom to cancer. We know Liberty lost her brother to suicide. But when Liberty comes out and says something to Shayne that you never would have imagined, you start to wonder. Like Shayne you start asking questions and go through all the "what if's and how comes". This is where men need to listen to a mothers intuition and let things be. I am sure if we all were to be put in Liberties position we might have done things differently. As you keep reading Bittersweet Catastrophe you will want to throw your reading device. You will want to yell and scream and ask how can Maureen do this? Your eyes will swell up with tears and you will not want to read anymore. I am going to tell you right now. KEEP READING, PUSH YOURSELF! YOU CAN DO IT. IT GETS BETTER. That is right. You need to keep reading. When I got to the end and read that one word. That one word. I stopped, put my kindle down, covered my face so my husband couldn't see me and I cried. That is right I cried. I cried tears of pain, tears of happiness and tears of love. I was so happy with the way this book ended. I told a friend that I was about to jump onto Facebook and email Maureen and be like "OMG how could you?" You will want to as well. What happens to Liberty and Shayne? Do they get a HEA? You my friends need to pick up the book and find out.
From the moment Liberty literally ran me down on the beach, my life was forever changed. When she opened her eyes and looked into mine it was like she saw me, all of me. Regardless of the pain in my past this woman gave me peace and she was the piece that made me whole. Liberty was now my wife the light to my darkness and the joy that I found each day! Our prayers had been answered, we were finally becoming parents. So when the doctor said twins needless to say, I’m in shock.
Life is never as you expect it to be, there are always times that seem perfect and some that you don’t know if you will survive or not. Even during this time there is always the assurance of the love that Liberty and I share. With that commitment we can withstand anything even the darkest hours and problems that a couple faces. When Liberty finds an abnormality on her breast, the doctor assures us there is nothing to worry about. She is pregnant and now there may be something happening to her that we have no control over. You will laugh, cry then do it all over again as you read this heartwarming love story.
Would I recommend this book: Yes! Bittersweet Catastrophe is Ms. Mayer’s transition novella and is told from Shayne’s point of view. I loved this book and the beautiful story that she weaves about love, family and happily ever after.
Would I recommend this author: Yes! This is a must read author, starting with Book 1 in the Second Chances series. The final book, Silent Repercussions will finish the series.
***Received an ARC of this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review***
I fell hard for Shayne and Liberty is the first book in the Second Chances’ series (Relinquishing Liberty). I was so excited to read this novella that is in Shayne’s point of view. Little did I know that I was in for the ugliest cry I have had in a while. Thanks Maureen. LOL This book should be issued with a warning and the swag should be tissues!
When we left Shayne and Liberty, they were having their HEA and everything was rainbows and unicorns. They were moving beyond their painful pasts. Things were finally looking up for these two and I was so happy for them.
I refuse to give spoilers in my reviews but I will tell you this: I LOVED this book. I was ready to snatch Shayne and Liberty away from Maureen Mayer and put them in a safe little bubble! I was so torn. My heart was ripping right out of my chest as tears streamed down my face. The things they had to face in this book would be a huge strain on any couple, no matter how strong their love, faith, and trust are in one another. By the time I had read the last chapter and before I got to the epilogue, I was a puddle on the floor. Then the epilogue made me cry harder! Ugh it was so good!!!
I highly recommend this book! I was hooked from page one and could not put it down until I had devoured every word. You felt every heart ache along with the characters as if you were experiencing them yourself. If you haven’t read the series yet, go give it a chance. Brett’s story is coming and I am so excited and thrilled that he gets his own book!
Complimentary copy provided by author for an honest review.
I have been wanting more Shayne since I read Relinquishing Liberty and to get Bittersweet Catastrophe only in his POV was amazing! I absolutely love this series and Shayne is one of my all time favorite book boyfriends!
We get to see more of Shayne and Liberty's relationship after the events of Relinquishing Liberty and Unforeseen Heartbeat, but not everything is great with these two. I mean don't get me wrong, the beginning is amazing, the middle and end, heart breaking! I wanted to get on messenger and message Maureen WTF did you just do when I read the last few chapters of this book, but I understand why she did what she did with these characters and it is a heartbreakingly beautiful story.
Getting inside of Shayne's head is awesome, you will laugh at what he thinks and says, want to strangle him for being such a man, and your heart will break right there with his.
Bittersweet Catastrophe is an amazingly written and beautiful book and I absolutely adored it! I loved getting more of Shayne and Liberty and seeing this part of their lives as it moved forward. Sometimes happily ever after isn't always what it seems when life gets in the way, and this story does a perfect job of showing that.
If you've read Relinquishing Liberty this is a MUST READ to see what happens with these two characters. I highly recommend it and am not so patiently waiting for Maureen's next book!
This book started off with Shayne watching his wife Liberty looking for something under the better. Finally she found it and now they were off to the OBGYN appointment. For over a year they had been trying to get pregnant. And they have been unsuccessful for a year. Finally after a year of trying they are Surprised and are now conceiving . Both decided to wait to tell anyone. It was amazing how much Shayne loves his wife. He makes me wish my husband was more like him. You could tell he was devoted and madly in love with Liberty. I loved this 2.5 book it brought out every emotion possible. I cried, laughed and was rooting for the best possible out come. It was amazing when 2 people that finally got what they want most ended up with heart wrenching news. It made you realize what life meaning was and hope for the best possible outcome. Shayne and Liberty story was beautiful and sweet and super romantic. It offered you love, romance, tears , and even sizzling hot sex. You must read book 1 and move to the next two books! I still am excited to read Brett's story! Maureen is a amazing writer and I can stay i love every story she has written!
OMG Maureen Mayer knows how to pull every emotion out of you in her stories. I swear I went from laughing one moment, to fanning my myself the next, and then I’d be tearing up. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and plowed through the story in just a few hours. I seriously couldn’t put it down. Shane and Liberty have been through a lot together but they’re now happily married. They now have new challenges to face together. Some are exciting and some are downright scary. I loved getting a chance to see them as a married couple and how everyone interacts after book 2. These 2 have grown a lot since they met each other. Of course they’re not perfect which only makes them feel more real. It’s easy to believe they are real people living real lives. The story line was intense and emotional but also sweet. I definitely teared up several times and I really felt connected to the characters. I was totally absorbed in their story. If you haven’t read this series, it is a must read. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series. 5 out of 5 stars!
Once again I am never failed by the authors I love! Another hit out of the ballpark Maureen!
Now going into this book I was fully prepared for a great story with me laughing my ass off. What I was not ready for is to have heart racing tears coming and going till the end, but wow what a great way to read through it!
Seeing the world threw Shayne's eyes was invigorating. The love he felt for Liberty was moving and heartfelt. The trials and tribulation he goes through break your same heart that was just busting with love from his feelings he has for his wife.
The love between Shayne and Liberty is so real. There were many times in this book where I could see alot of myself and my husband in these charcters. The more real they became the more I felt I could relate.
The story grabs you right from the begining and keeps you hooked till the end. And the whole time your rooting for them to get there happy ending.
I absolutely loved reading more of this series! It deserves every one of its 5 stars. Awesome read!
I really enjoyed this book. Hell, I enjoyed this series. This was a nice complimentary book with a continuation of Shayne and Liberty. I always want more at the end of books because not every relationship all the time is roses and glitter. Real people have real relationship issues and this book is kind of what happens after they find their happy ending. It was interesting to see Shayne and Liberty go through real relationship issues and more.
I loved Shayne even more in this book. He was such a devoted husband and really showed me how much he loved and supported his wife. They face ups and downs. They made me laugh, cry, smile and swoon. They made me root for them and want them to push through the tragedy and strife in order to find their happy place again. If you read their book, Relinquishing Liberty, then you will want to dive into this book for more of their story and future.
I received a copy of Bittersweet Catastrophe in exchange for an honest review. This was book 2.5 in the series. This is Shayne's story. I have to say this was a very hard book to read for me. I lost my friend to Breast Cancer on Aug 28th of this year and laid her to rest on Sept 2nd. I didn't know what this book had instore for me but the series is awesome and I so recommend. Well because I was wrapped up in the series I couldn't not read this story when I found out Liberty was pregnant and the C word came up. Maureen did an excellent job with this whole series and I really felt connected with all the characters and cried when they cried and laughed when they laughed. This is a quick read and yes you need to read these in order and trust me you won't be sorry when you read this series. But if you just recently lost someone to cancer and are still having a hard time coping then I would suggest either waiting a bit to read this or read it and get a good cry out cause I did.
*Copy was provided for an honest review * Please note this review covers all 3 of Maureen's books. I had the extreme pleasure to get given a copy of all 3 of these great books from Maureen for an honest review, I loved them so much I ordered signed copies of the first two in paperback. And will be getting the third book once it becomes available. I have never meet an author who can spin a love story the way Maureen can and I am not ashamed to say i cried my eyes out with the last book . So emotional, Heart breaking but you still are not able to put the books down, I love Maureen's work and am a huge fan. I highly recommend Maureen's to work to everyone . She truly is an amazing author and you can feel the love she has for writing in every one of her characters well worth the 5 star ratings i will leave on goodreads. Love your work Maureen and cant wait for your next work
Bittersweet Catastrophe by Maureen Mayer 5 stars Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review from Addicted to books and authors This book takes place after the first two in the series but is told in Shayne's POV. He has found all he has ever wanted in Liberty and for a year they have been trying with no success to get pregnant. When she finally realizes she is pregnant life throws them a major curve ball and we see how real life can be. I don't like to give away spoilers so I won't get to into detail but this book was very emotional and I ugly cried several times. It was very heartwarming to be able to see from Shayne's POV what he felt and how he was dealing with the situation. I LOVE Shayne! It seems this books just get better with each one. The author just pulls you in and keeps you intrigued and wanting more. I can't wait for Brett's story and more from the whole bunch.
Can I just say I loved Shayne's father, "oh man," he bellowed out, wiping the tears the brimmed his eyes, and stood tall with his hands propped up on his hips. "Son, I haven't laughed that hard since the first time you woke up with morning wood and thought your d*** was going to fall off." Liberty that girl is pushy when she wants something, "haven't you even heard the saying pregnant women have an increased sex drive?" she pointed down at herself, as if there were flashing arrows aiming directly at her sweet spot. "Um hello, uber pregnant woman here, dying to have her husband's d*** inside of her." I enjoyed reading this book, I liked seeing how Shayne and Liberty were getting on, I mean Marueen made my heart a stop a few times with couple of things, but I'm glad everything worked out.
These just keep getting better! Although I was seriously on the verge of an emotional breakdown reading this one! This continues Liberty and Shayne's journey. These two have a great relationship and still only have eyes, and hearts, for each other. They get a wonderful blessing, followed by some really frightening news. This puts their love in the ultimate test. When it comes down to it and the very reason for Shayne to live is slipping through his fingers, he has to decide to hang on or say goodbye to the other part of his heart. Sometimes we really have no choice though. And sometimes our guardian angels are sent to intervene. I highly recommend this book, but I will say you must read the first book in the series to really know what is going on in this one! But don't worry, it's just as great as this one! ~Chell
WOW!! What a great addition to the series. If you were not already in love with Shayne, you will be by the time you finish this book. Liberty and Shayne have such a sweet and loving story and with all that Shayne has been through with his mothers death at a young age and his playboy ways for so long, it is enduring to see him be such a great husband.
I have so much I want to say about this book but if I tell you too much then I will spoil your journey. I will tell you now, get a glass of wine in a comfortable place and a box of tissues beside you because you will not be able to put this book down and you will need the entire box of tissues by the time you are done.
Great job Maureen....can't wait to read what you have for us next. Please don't keep us waiting too long.
Bittersweet Catastrophe is a great read. It's book 2.5 of the Second Chances series. It can be read as a standalone. Maureen Mayer did a wonderful job writing it and you won't be lost if you didn't read the first book, Relinquishing Liberty. I would recommend you read Relinquishing Liberty first but it's not required.
In Bittersweet Catastrophe we get more of Shayne and Liberty's story. It's told in Shayne's POV. I love Shayne's character and it was great to read Shayne's POV. Shayne and Liberty have some great things and some really awful things happen to them in this story. It is defiantly an emotional roller coaster of a read.
This is a great read. You may want to have tissue near by just in case you need them.
If you've read the Second Chances series, then you've been waiting for this novella!! Shayne and Liberty. Now I liked Shayne, but Brett is my man. But after reading Bittersweet Catastrophe, I like Shayne a lot more now! My heart ached for him. Hell, I sobbed for him!! I sobbed for Liberty! I sobbed a lot in this story!! It's hard to tell you about the story without spoilers. Just know that you will NEED to read this. If you haven't read the series....get on it!! Relinquishing Liberty is first, then Unforeseen Circumstances is second. I've been hounding Maureen Mayer for Brett's book for a while now. She's promising it will be soon...... but not soon enough.
I received this for an honest review and I have to say that I loved it. It was the perfect follow up to Shayne and Liberty's story. This story truly showed how much the two of them loved each other and how they were perfect for each other. This whole series just takes a hold of me and keeps me guessing what is going to be next.. I will apologize right now because this is not a long review. I honestly feel as though if I say anymore I will be giving it away and I do not want to do that. P.S. Read the first two books first :)
Bittersweet Catastrophe (Second Chances, #2.5) Shayne and Liberty have everything going for them when tragedy strikes. Liberty makes a decision for their family that could be the wrong one but she refuses to budge on the decision. With her friends help will she change her mind or ruin the relationship she has fought so hard to have to begin with. Or will she stick to her decision and ruin everything Reading order: Relinquishing Liberty (Second Chances, #1) Unforeseen Heartbeat (Second Chances, #2) Bittersweet Catastrophe (Second Chances, #2.5)
I won an ARC copy of this book and let me tell you. It was a total page turner. I couldn't put it down for a second until I had to. I loved Shayne in this book and I loved that I got to know him better and what he was thinking. If he was a real person I would want to know him. It was a total shocker at the end that basically almost made me cry but it definitely kept me on my toes. Maureen Mayer really out did herself with Shayne's POV. I was very impressed.
Well Mayer made me cry a little while reading this full length book. It was a sweet story and often had me laughing out loud. I like that it touched on Brett too! I loved Shayne from the very first book and it was nice to see how Hunter was doing.
Writing was superb Pace was awesome It was a wonderful roller coaster and I'm happy I got to see what Shayne and Liberty were up to. And really happy about that ending!
This is definitely my favourite in the series. I highly recommend you read book one before you read this. I was super excited to read more about Liberty and Shayne.
This story is told from Shaynes point of view. It's a really brilliantly written story. Lots of ups and downs had me gripped.
If your looking for a brilliant emotional rollercoaster then I highly recommend this book and of course the others in the series. Brilliant stories. I loved them.
I loved this book! It was so well written... Shayne continues to.be my favorite alpha male especially after reading this one! Liberty is still fierce and amazing... this book.definitely doesn't disappoint!
This book should come with a warning label or a pack of tissue. Trust me I was booger crying and it takes a lot to make that happen. Maureen had an amazing gift that allows her readers to not only feel her characters emotions but to feel a part of the story.
Bittersweet Catastrophe is book #2.5 in the Second Chances Series, Having read the previous two books in the series I was excited to get started on this follow on story for Shane & Liberty. I was given an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review so here goes...
This book was not what I was expecting at all!!!
If you are looking for a happy go lucky extended epilogue with a smidge of drama this is NOT the book for you!!!
This book is harsh and heart breaking and incredibly sad, to be honest I spent the whole book on the verge of tears.
If I hadn’t have been given this book for review I probably wouldn’t have finished, this is in no way a reflection on the quality of writing because as always Maureen Mayer’s books are beautifully written. I may have given up simply because it was just far too sad for me!!!
This book sees Shane & Liberty dealing with a really shitty hand being thrown at them whilst pregnant with twins.
I don’t want to give too much away as it really will spoil it for future readers.
This whole book was heartbreaking and to be honest not really my cup of tea.
I like my books heavily tilted towards happily ever after and to be honest I don’t really enjoy too many reminders that life is short and that fate can be fickle.
Please don’t think that I hated it because I didn’t!!! It just made me sad, by the time I had finished I just wanted to curl up into a ball with my kids and cry like a baby.
I also want to say Maureen Mayer if you ever read this..... You almost gave me a heart attack at the end of the last chapter, I was actually shouting at my ereader!!!
I gave this book 3 stars purely and simply because it was just too serious and far too sad for me.
