Just got my copy of this on last Monday. Not very much a book. Kind of journal. Loving it so much.. I've just completed 3 of 72 challenges. Really a good one to those who love to keep memories. I'm taking it slow because there are so many memories worth to keep! I imagine myself in 10 years' time, I'll be 28 and smiling over my cute handwriting and ah this is dope.
Update: 8/9/13 I've enjoyed working on this but after having completed 46 of the 72 alterations, I think it's time to give it a rest for a while.
I've been working on this journal since I got it last week and am having so much fun with it! I'm a perfectionist, so it's a bit hard to just do the alteration process but I'm trying not to second guess things too much and just go with the flow.
I'm not working on the pages in order, just filling them in as I find the instructed items. Also, you're supposed to flip the book upside down and randomly open it to pick the alteration but I wasn't keen on that so DH created me a random number generator in Excel that marks off the numbers I've already used. I think that the chance element of the exercise means that you could (and probably should, if it came up) do the same alteration twice but I prefer to do something different each time. Definitely helping me branch out creatively and be less concerned about a "perfect" end result.
I was so excited when i got the opportunity to review this book for Spinebreakers. I'd heard so much about Wreck This Journal (which i really really really really want.) which she'd also done so when i finally got this book in the post i jumped up and down in delight. Now, this is the first journal-type-book i've ever had so please do not judge my ability to complete the pages but, i thought i'd do a more 'involved review to give you a little insight into the book, and show you the first couple of pages that i did when i first got it..but don't scroll down yet! read the rest of the review first! So, the book. I found it hard to get into at first because it was going against what i'm used to; being a perfectionist. The book encourages people to push against the boundaries of 'normal' creativity and make something unique; which i think is good for people like me as it brings us out of our comfort zone. The book is layed out with chapters, and you have to collect something different for each chapter. At the bottom of each page there is a red strip with a 'hint', written upside down. So what you have to do is go onto your first chapter, collect what you have to do, then flip to a random place in the book, turn the book upside down; read the hint and do what it tells you to do with that item you have collected. Don't cheat though. Even if what it tells you to do goes against your grain, do it. you'll be surprised with the results. The only worry i have with the book is that it will start to get tedious for the 'creator'. it is actually really hard to find the items you need to have. (which is why i'm only on chapter 5 lol. ( i am still waiting to find a feather for chapter 4 )So, for people like me, who love to see finished results quite quickly and have a limited amount of patience, the book may get discarded after maybe half the book and then forgotten about. so you really have to have sticking power if you want to get this book! Or just have patience. which i don't really have.
"The pocket Scavenger" is not a story but a book of lists of things to find. The pages include an object for the reader to search out , the date found and your story behind finding the object. Now if you have kids that always are asking," Mom, I'm bored what can I do?" you and your sanity will benefit from this book. I have 13 children ranging from 6 mos to 20, and this book was fun for the whole family to get involved with, so put away the board games for Wednesday night family time and buy this book, its fun and a great way for your kids to practice their writing skills.
A friend of mine recently recommended to me that I read this book. I had read several of Keri Smith's books in the past, but never this one.
I have to say, this is probably my favorite book of hers that I have read, at least. It's a great book to: -Take your mind off things -Keep yourself occupied and engaged -Help with boredom -Pass time
This one of the not as fun books I have read and completed of hers, but I still very much enjoyed it a lot and it definitely served a purpose.
To enjoy Keri Smith's books is to BE a certain way in the world. Reading her books also involves so many other verbs--writing, drawing, collecting, observing, messing up, exploring, wondering, mark-making--and this book is no different. Delightful.
Tween girls are most likely the target audience for this book (and I suspect the previous owner was one, based on the few entries she completed), but it's done a good job of sparking my middle-aged creativity.
Such a fun book for someone wanting to learn to draw and stay busy. Book is full of prompts to find random items and suggestions to display the items. Great for anyone who loves to doodle. Also reminds us to slow down and take a look at everything around us😎
I love this book because it provokes me to look into the world and find something that sparks an emotional response. It doesn't matter how obscure the object you are sent to look for, the process of seeking leads to unexpected insights and delights. It's a workbook for creative adventures. The joy is in your hands - you create the imagination and fun. I bought a copy for a friend and can highly recommend sharing the joy of scavenging for odd items suggested by the book.
Judul : The Pocket Scavenger Karya : Keri Smith Tebal : 180 Halaman Penerbit : Gramedia Pustaka Utama

I think this is a fun book. It asks you to find certain objects around you, put them in the book, and then make some kind of unexpected alteration to the object. I was a bit skeptical about the alterations, but if you have any ounce of creativity I think you will find yourself enjoying them. I have to say gluing rhinestones to leaves was pretty fun. The greatest aspect of this book is that it will yield different results for everybody, which makes me think this would be a fun project to undertake with a friend to see how you express yourselves in individual ways. However, if you are planning to give this book as a gift, make sure the recipient is someone who will follow through. I can see someone getting this book, doing 3 activities, and then abandoning it. I think this book would work best if you are going on a trip and want a good physical reminder of that place. Otherwise, the book asks you to take it everywhere you go, and to be constantly looking for the required items. While this is a romantic concept, I don't think it is very realistic. Overall, I think this book has a cute concept and could be very successful if given to the right person.
I now spend my time looking at the ground for stuff. This is a book version of the scavenger hunts you used to go on as a kid, with a bit of a twist. You are given items to find and attach into the book and then invited to randomly select an alteration such as adding text or triangles. It's been good fun, I'm 38 and am happily looking for things with my 9 year old who is as delighted as I am when we find something. My only concern is hygeine and making sure in using this you didn't cut yourself. It is also a bit American orientated, I think British rubbish is a bit different in quality. It does make you look at the world differently, I now see all those bits and pieces in the gutters I would have ignored before.
Atlayarak okudum..
The Pocket Scavenger is brought to you by the wonders of the author of Wreck This Journal, a popular book that lots of people have enjoyed. TPS is not a novel so I won't do a proper review, but I will share with you the great features.
Scavenger hunts are so much fun - but they only last a few minutes. However, you can record the amazing things you find inside this gorgeous journal. It has pages and pages of things to find and really unique ideas to stick in the beautiful notebook. It is a great way of exploring your creative side and having a closer look at the world around you.
Sometimes I think I'm not a creative person, but I hope this book really brings out the creative sense in me. I haven't progress that much, I only have done one challenge or things to be scavenged, but I can't wait to fill this book with some weird things I found. Things to gather in this book are unordinary so it will take time to finish this book. I like the idea though, so there will be a feeling of accomplishment after you finish the whole challenge.
Saw this was made by Keri Smith so I instantly picked it up! Her journals are so creative and interesting I'll be sure to buy them all any chance I can. This is perfect for someone who feels as though they are in a creative rut. Carrying this with you at all times will absolutely bring inspiration to you. So fun!
I loved this book last year! I filled it over the course of 4 or 5 months walking to work and back every day! So fun! It made me really notice my surroundings; to pay attention to things in my environment. I even went to far as to use a notepad to continue collecting! Even now I keep my eyes open to finding things to use in new ways! Amazing book.
This is a great book for summer. Especially if you want to keep kids busy and occupied. Great ideas for hunts and you can write in the book to keep everything in one place.
Although I've only "scavenged" two items so far, I'd like to say I absolutely love this book. It sparks that kind of childhood creativity so many of of us seem to lose and kind of teaches you that the world is a treasure chest, not a mess.
Obviously this book is a journal so my rating is not based on a read, I bought this book as something that myself and my children could do together, we love it, it gets us out in the fresh air and gives us spending some quality time together.
It's a fun book. By read, i mean i haven't done all of the challenge, I just done 3 or 4 from... IDK how much, but I've read all of them, I was very excited to play this game of scavenger, but well, some weeks have pass, I'm still going to continue!
This is not quite a "book" book. It's kind of journal that would challenged your creativities. The theme for scavenging pretty interesting and you could make it as a fun project.I love the future project thingy!
This book intended to be a friend's gift and I made a quick peeked XD
I bought this book to share with my grandsons and read it through to be prepared for doing it together. I think we will have lots of fun with the exercises.
its a scavenger hunt. its amazing and passes time. literally each page has at least scavenger hunts to fulfill. if scavenger hunts are you thing BUY THIS NOW!
I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as the others I got (Wreck This Journal, Mess, Finish This Book, This Is Not A Book, How To Be An Explorer Of The World)
