'Tis the gift to be simple
'Tis the gift to be free ... -- Shaker folk song

This is the eighth book in the Born Again Christian comic book series, The Crusaders. A young non-Christian girl tries to commit suicide by drowning, but is rescued by our muscle-bound heroes and their girlfriends, who waste no time in preaching to her about Jesus. They say nothing about her smoking, because that isn't seen as a kind of suicide.

Since she's on the rebound from a bad love affair, of course she becomes addicted to Chick's sick brand of Christianity. Hey -- it's a Chick comic, and all the endings are the same, so it's not as if that's a major spoiler.

By the way -- our rescuers do not take the suicidal girl to a hospital. They take her to one of their personal homes.

Since this is a comic book, Chick is sure to add a lot of senseless violence -- and yet quotes from the Bible while doing so. There is mention of animal sacrifice. There is also the Slaughter of the Innocents -- which is the event portrayed on the cover. The grieving Jewish mothers are, of course, scantily clad. I guess God was okay with babies getting killed, because (according to Chick) the Jews had it coming for being disobedient.

There is also extremely bloody whipping and crucifixion of Jesus, where he's basically flayed alive. And our suicidal girl us told that this was all HER FAULT, as she is a sinner.

Can you imagine what damage this message does to a REAL suicidal person?

The comic also shows demons, since Chick and his staff just couldn't get enough of drawing demons -- or babies getting ripped out of the arms of scantily clad, shapely Jewish beauties by Roman soldiers.

If this is a gift, return it, because it's no damn good.
