Siccome mi interesso di colonizzazione spaziale (la fantascienza chiama anche nel concreto, nella vita di tutti i giorni), ho cominciato a informarmi sulle varie idee e tecnologie a disposizione o in fase di realizzazione per aggirare gli enormi costi economici ed energetici della fase più critica del viaggio spaziale: lasciare la Terra.
Ci sono molte idee più o meno bislacche, ma tra le meno assurde e improponibili c'è probabilmente lo StarTram. Il libro è molto interessante, ricco di dati, anche se un po' ridondante; a volte sembra quasi che gli autori te lo stiano vendendo, questo StarTram, invece che illustrarne le caratteristiche. Di certo è un'ottima cosa poter elencare gli innumerevoli vantaggi e le sconfinate applicazioni di un'idea o un prodotto, però oggettivamente una parte consistente del volume si concentra davvero molto su questo.
Ciò tolto, è una lettura che ho apprezzato abbastanza da farci un video sul mio canale YouTube dedicato (Space Sheep), quindi decisamente non lo ritengo da buttar via.
Peccato solo che sia disponibile solo in inglese, anche se di un livello abbastanza leggibile - niente termini eccessivamente difficili da affrontare o costruzione delle frasi troppo ricercata - ma d'altra parte è così per moltissimi testi simili. Quasi mi veniva male a dargli un voto come fosse un romanzo, quindi ho optato per un politico "liked it" a tre stelle.
