THE DOCTOR WEARS A STETSON The Sweeter Version: Book One The Diamondback Ranch Sweeter Series Contemporary Western Romance Novel 58,000 words/174pp
AUTHOR'S WARNING: This is a SWEETER (NOT sweet and clean) version of The Doctor Wears A Stetson. It's the same characters and story, but with love scenes that are less graphic and explicit. If you want a hotter sexier read, check out the original version in The Diamondback Ranch Series.
BLURB:
Jessie Kincaid was fifteen and innocent when Cameron asked her to the prom. She lost her heart that night, but his plans didn't change. He left their small town to pursue his dreams.
Seventeen years later, a trip home leads Cameron McCade back to Salt Fork, Texas and the newly widowed Jessie Devine. Since his return, the fire between them burns as hot as ever. Can they take up where they left off? Can Jessie risk her heart again?
Anne Marie is a Texas girl, born and raised. Romance is her passion. She loves to read and write about men and women falling in love, overcoming life's obstacles, and living happily ever after. She writes spicy contemporary novels, usually involving a cowboy or two, as well as Regency historicals.
Married to her high school sweetheart, Anne Marie and her husband spend their leisure time working (actually playing) in the yard and renovating their 1956 custom-built house on a one-acre lot in the middle of the city. They have two grown children, three white rabbits, two mischievous cats, and one sweet puppy dog.
Dull and predictable. I was waiting for something to happen, but what really put me off was this ridiculous moment:
Taking the square packet from him, she brushed her arm against his hot erection. Deliberately, she brushed him again as she got to her knew. 'We really don't need this.' Cameron's eyes dilated and his nostrils flared. 'You're protected?' Jessie tossed the condom aside. 'Absolutely.'
WHAT THE %&*$?? She has not had sex with anyone other than her husband (who is dead). Cameron has reappeared after 17 years. Protection? Errr...he hasn't been exactly virginal. Does she not have ay sense? Condoms are not just to stop her getting pregnant!!!
What utter rubbish. I would not have given a rating, but that scene was simply beyond belief.
This was a good story. I liked Cameron and Jesse and overall I liked their story. This is the first book I've read by this author and based off this I'd be willing to try more of her work in the future.
Jessie is a good woman that tends to think of others before herself. Unfortunately this means that she tends to make herself miserable about things that aren't her fault. She lost her mother before she was old enough to remember her and her dad got cancer her senior year of high school and eventually died. Jesse had planned to leave town to go to college and become a journalist but ended up staying and taking care of her dad and running their family garage instead.
Cameron is a good guy. He grew up on a ranch with his family but knew that what he really wanted was to be a doctor. He made plans for his future, planning to go to college to become a doctor and then live in the city. Cameron was determined to follow his plans and he did but although he loves being a doctor, the rest of his life isn't all he thought it would be and a visit to his home town ends up showing him what he's missing.
In High School, Cameron asked Jessie to his senior prom (she was just a freshman). Jessie had always had a crush on Cameron so she agreed. Cameron told Jessie about his plans to leave town and become a doctor but that didn't keep her from losing her heart to him that night and when Cameron left for college Jessie was heartbroken. Cameron went on to become a doctor in Houston and Jessie stayed in town and ran her family garage. Jessie eventually married a man named Tiar (not sure of the spelling as I listened to the audiobook) but he died in an accident and she's spent the last couple years alone (and stewing in guilt because she didn't think she was a good enough wife to him). Jessie has been having some money issues which makes things difficult as she owns mineral rights for a portion of Cameron's family's land. She doesn't want to lease those rights but if she doesn't she might lose her garage. When Cameron shows up in town it's for his mother's 60th birthday party. He's just been offered a big promotion at work which will put him where he always wanted to be (career wise). But lately he's found he doesn't like the politics and such at work although he still loves being a doctor. He's using his time away to decide if he should take the promotion or not. When he gets in to town his car overheats and he pulls in to Jessie's garage and they meet again after 17 years.
When they went to prom together there was a definite attraction and it's still obviously present after all these years. Cameron is all for pursuing it but Jessie isn't willing to sleep with someone that's just leaving town in a few days anyways. The visit shows just how good they could be together and has Jessie wishing Cameron would move back and Cameron wondering if he could be happy in his home town after all. The visit shows them both just how right they could be together but Jessie refuses anything physical. Jessie is very active in the community and is opening the first local clinic (saving people from driving 80 miles 1 way to a doctor). She shows the clinic to Cameron and he can almost see himself there but isn't willing to seriously think about moving back. Cameron does leave to go back to Houston but he can't forget Jessie and visits again a few weeks later. With the second visit Jessie gives in to his advances and they start a relationship even though Jessie isn't sure where it could go. Cameron ends up deciding to take the job in the clinic and move back but that doesn't give him the HEA that he hopes for and this is because of Jessie. Lets just say that Jessie's guilt complexes makes her believe that she's responsible for everyone else's happiness and she makes excuses not to give herself happiness for stupid and untrue reasons. Fortunately for her (and us as the readers), Cameron isn't willing to let her ruin their lives and does what he has to to convince her they're supposed to be together and her reason to the contrary are just crap. With some effort and some really sweet gestures, Cameron does manage to convince Jessie and they get their HEA.
This was an enjoyable story. I liked Jessie overall but I did get very frustrated with her over her inability to allow herself happiness or even to see the true that was staring her in the face. Cameron was great, nuff said. The story was pretty good and to be honest I probably would have given it a solid 4 stars if not for my annoyance with Jessie letting guilt rule her life. I still debated whether to give 3 or 4 but finally settled on 3 but it's close to 4. I may try more of the books in the series in the future. I liked Cameron's sister and am curious about her story. :)
* note - I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator did a very good job.
Not worth your time unless you like watching or reading in this case train wrecks.
Basic storyline of High school tomboy gets asked to prom by hot, popular jock. She think she is his last ditch effort since breaking up with his GF so close to prom. Several kisses at the end of the night with little actual storyline and he is gone. 17 years later guy comes back for his mom's birthday & drops by tomboy's gas station to fix his jag. Story goes from there in a very disjointed fashion while the main characters act like teenagers in every way possible despite being in their thirties.
This story had a ton of potential but nothing delivered. Cameron somehow didn't know how close Jessie was with his family. Yet based on the ridiculous promise Jesse made to her dead husband, she shouldn't have been close them less she break her promise. A promise is something she swore she doesn't break unless in dire circumstances. I guess wanting to get close to a family is considered dire. This is just one of many issues. Why I kept reading was likely because it felt like I was watching a train wreck and couldn't stop.
As far as the claimed hotter version of this series, I found that literally laughable. The more intimate scenes were cliche and felt like they were written by a 15 year old virgin. I even read parts of the sex scenes to my husband who laughed and rolled his eyes at how unrealistic they were. The scenes were juvenile at best.
Sadly I am I intrigued by the McCade family but not enough to buy it. As a free book, it was a waste of time but at least not any money. if you really are desperate for a book to read in between other authors releases, this may be worth it but only if it remains free. Very rarely do I give such a harsh review but felt this book didn't leave me a choice. Read at your own risk.
I was really disappointed in this one, because it had so much potential. Boy goes off to the big city, though he longs for the girl next store in his small hometown. The execution of this, however, missed the mark.
Misunderstandings and doubt are cornerstones of romances, but can't be the only source of conflict in a story. This book seemed to be one long miscommunication, and if Jess and Cameron had just sat down and had an adult conversation, the story would have been 1/3 the length.
I liked Cameron. Determined to make good on his life's goals, he left home and achieved everything he thought he wanted...and then some. The one part that felt a little icky to me was the prom. Cameron was 18 and Jess 15.
Jess had her moments, but mostly drove me crazy.
On the good side, I enjoyed Cameron's family. Ruth was the mom we all want to have, and the relationship they shared with both Cameron and Jess was welcoming and seemed fun.
The writing style was casual and somewhat easy to read. I was thrown occasionally by the headhopping, especially since misunderstanding was the main cause of conflict. Improving the point of view issues would help clarify things for the reader.
As a whole, not a horrible book, which I got free. If I'd paid for it, I may be more disappointed, but considering the negatives with this one, I don't think I'll continue with others.
Jessie Kincaid always had a crush on Cameron. She was only fifteen and innocent the night Cameron took her to prom, and she lost her heart to a boy, who wasn't changing his plans. He still left town right after graduation. Never said goodbye to her. Cameron McCade had given Jess her first kiss on prom night, and if he hadn't backed away from her, he knew he would of changed his plans for her. Seventeen years later Cameron is back for his mother's birthday party. The chemistry is still burning hot between Cameron and Jessie. Although Jessie tries to resist getting involved with him, she can't run from him for long. Eventually she gives in and loses her heart all over again, but then again she has always loved him. Cameron is in love with Jessie but she refuses him because of her inability to give him what he wants for their future. But he doesn't care about that, he just wants her and he loves her. So Cameron sets out to woo and court her, and prove to Jessie that no matter what he loves her and wants to spend the rest of his life with her. Jessie finally gets over her inabilities and accepts Cameron's proposal. But they get a great surprise that Jessie didn't think was possible. Cameron and Jessie are happy in love and finally starting the beginning of their future together.
I enjoyed reading The Doctor Wears a Stetson, but Jessie was a little annoying with her guilt trips and all that. But in the end it all turned out great. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.
From their first date in high school at Cameron's prom, Jessie and Cam have chemistry that is off the charts. However, Cam has plans and they don't involve Salt Fork and as soon as he graduates he is gone. 17 years later he comes to town for his mom's birthday party and when sees Jessie those 17 years disappear, but he has the new job opportunity and his life in Houston. Sticking to his plans is what he did best. Jessie had big plans for her life, but life had other plans for her. She has lost her mom, dad, and her husband TR and now Cam is back in town and he came to her garage after car trouble, it is like their first and only date was yesterday. She wouldn't let him break her heart...again. Plus, what about her dead husband, she wasn't a good wife in life she couldn't be unfaithful in death. Cam and Jessie cannot resist each other though they do everything in their power to resist, especially Jessie. It is fun to read about the dance these two do as they try to fight this attraction they have, however can Jessie get over her guilt and can Cam finally settle?? Loved this story and enjoyed all the characters in this quaint small town. Definitely picking up the rest of this series...I read the sweeter version first and that was passionate, but the non-sweet version, sizzle, sizzle!!!
This was a pretty good book. Cameron McCade left Salt Fork, Texas to pursue his dreams. Jessie Kincaid was fifteen and innocent when Cameron asked her to the prom. She lost her heart that night but his plans didn't change. Now he is back and she is a widow and fire still burns. This was a pretty good book and I love reading about second chance romance. Jessie had big plans for her life, but life had other plans for her. She has lost her mom, dad, and her husband TR and now Cam is back in town and he came to her garage after car trouble, it is like their first and only date was yesterday. She wouldn't let him break her heart again plus what about her dead husband, she wasn't a good wife in life she couldn't be unfaithful in death. The book did have a few flaws for me like Jessie saying she was barren really who uses that word. I really liked Cameron he was a hot sexy doctor. This is the first book in a new series too me and I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
The heroine was the problem in this story. First she made this ridiculous promise (about the land) to her dead husband that she did not even love two years ago when he dead. However, she has no problem breaking a promise to her friend and Cameron's mother. Then she says ridiculous things to Cameron that she has to take it slow because of the memory of her dead husband AND remember this is not this is the husband that she did not even love...ever. Cameron was the one that she thought of for all those years. And then there are other ridiculous comments but I do not want to give those away. I do not know why Cameron even wanted to be with her. Sure the town "loved her" but she was ridiculous.
I have listened to other books by Erin Mallon. I think this had nothing to do with Erin Mallon's performance, but the story itself.
Had higher hopes due to most of the reviews. Glad it was free. Story got old before I was even halfway through. Kept flipping pages in hopes of more... No luck. Will try book 2, but only when I can find it for free. Heroine & her CONSTANT promises she JUST HAS TO KEEP (to a dead husband--that she didn't even love) get SICKENING. The GOOD DOCTOR :) on the other hand, was the ONLY reason I finished this book instead of deleting it off my kindle by halfway through. As for this being the steamier version, (???) the 'sweeter series' must be like eating day-old, dry bread. In summation, if you have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING else to do AND you get this for free, might as well give it a try.
It bothered me that for her a child from adoption is not the same as a birth child. Coming from someone that is trying to adopt. Children/babies who are adopted are so precious. Parents have to jump though so many hoops.
The writing is OK, but sweet, country romance is not really my genre. And now I know why - the H & h were both TSTL so many times. The h was too perfect, everyone loved her. Why? She was annoying, she loved him but she had made promises which she couldn't break, except for the one promise she has to break because it gets her what she wants the most, to run a garage that doesn't make enough money to meet her obligations. For what she wants, she will break a promise, even though others will suffer as a result. So this really caring person, does not care about anyone except herself. See - annoying. The H was not any better, dumbest doctor ever to not recognise her symptoms. He was a weak person who vacillated too much. Not for me.
This is my first book by this author and I really liked it. Jessie and Cameron attend the prom and she has a big crush on him. He then goes off to college, med school and a practice in Houston. Seventeen years later, he comes back and is trying to win her back. A lot has happened and Jessie does not want her heart broken again. I really enjoyed reading about this couple and how he convinces her to give him a chance.
Just a tad disappointing! 17 years ago, Cameron left town and broke Jessie's heart. Why? Because neither one of them know how to communicate with each other. Jessie is keeping promises to her DEAD husband, while Cameron is coming on a little too aggressive, as if he intends to force Jessie into a loving relationship. Yep, a tad disappointing!
I love a good romance book. This was an okay romance book. While I did finish it, the story was very predictable and the heroin's personal "turmoil" seemed over the top. Read it but don't expect to be surprised or satisfied by the story.
A book with an unusual title, this was my first book by Anne Marie Novark. I got it free on Amazon and bought it because of the intriguing blurb.
Jessie and Cameron went out just once but Jessie had always had a crush on Cameron which turned into love that day. While Cameron left town for higher studies, Jessie is left behind with an ailing father and a crumbling business. The story picks up after seventeen years with the return of Cameron who is now a famous doctor and very rich. Jessie, on the other hand, is almost broke, a widow and desperately trying alone to keep her family's business afloat.
The characterization is crisp and I could relate to the small town environment and the friendly people. Cameron is a strong character who stirs our romantic sides. Jessie is a sweet and a good girl who forsakes her ambition to care for her father and tries real hard to keep her legacy alive. The only point I felt frustrating about her was her unwanted focus on a promise made to her dying husband for a feud which is so ridiculous that I rolled my eyes a few times. :)
The story moves at a medium pace and though the excess focus on the physical side of the protagonist's relationship did make me lose some interest, the overall story is good and keeps you sufficiently interested. The emotional scenes between Cameron and Jessie are touching and made me really want a happily-ever-after for them.
The author has the flair of story telling and is able to create her world in the book.
A breezy and light hearted read, I give The Doctor Wears A Stetson a 3.5 out of 5. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
Cowboy stories are always fun - I have a hard time writing them because I'm too cynical (and I prefer the fictional version over many of the cowboys I've met in real life). But I love to read 'em, being a Montana girl, and this one certainly didn't disappoint. It takes place in a small town, where life happens much like you'd expect it to, aside from the sports car that the town's prodigal son drives into town one night. What eventually happens to the car...well, that just cracked me up, but suffice it to say, our awkward heroine (Jessie) has a lot to do with it. And it's not what you're thinking, it's far better.
There's also an...issue that Jessie has to deal with that stems mainly from a lack of education (as well as fear), and I like how that particular part of the book was dealt with as well.
Overall, the story is a pretty basic small town "second chance at love" tale that is sweet, poignant and a little sad in spots. It's the characters that make it excellent - normal people who have sort of lost their way, and need each other to find it again. If you're looking for a nice, quick, romantic read, don't hesitate to pick this one up. I'll be looking into more of Anne's work very shortly myself.
This was a 3.5 star read for me. This story was promising at first - the storyline was nice and the characters were likable - but then it didn't seem to want to end and got a bit boring and predictable. I feel like things were going on too long and it was making me restless at times. I liked Cameron - he was really sweet and fun and seemed like a overall good person. He was the boy who moved from the small town to the big city to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. Jessie was nice and smart and sweet but at times she frustrated me. She was the girl who wanted more than the small town she grew up in and had plans to leave but her father got real sick and she took care of him, then got married and never left. Now she's a widow for two years and the boy she loved as a child is back and making her heart spin all over again. Cameron had feelings for Jessie back when they were younger but never acted on them because he knew he'd never leave his small town to go to school. But he's back now and decides he doesn't want to leave and wants to be with Jessie - who tries her hardest to stay away from Cameron and keep her heart in one piece. After some ups and downs they get their HEA. Overall it was an okay story hat had a lot of potential but it just fell flat for me.
I've always been a sucker for cowboys...don't know what it is about them, but there ya go. So when I saw this one, I jumped at getting it. I did have a few issues with Jessie at some points. However, I can certainly understand where she was coming from. She had made a promise to her husband and does't want to dishonor that. Anyone who can't understand that has obviously never made a promise before. Does that mean I agree with her? No, not at all, but I can see where she's coming from. As for what people have said about her falling in love with Cameron when she was a teen, she was 15! Seriously, have you never been a 15 year old girl with a crush? So when her crush asks her to prom and they share the night they had, yeah, her heart is going to be changed. I was hoping that Jessie didn't have to break her promise to Ruth, however, the way it ended up made it okay. And it's definitely a good lead into what I'm guessing book 2 is about...Dallas. I look forward to getting that one!
This is an okay read. The plot is predictable until the end and gets a little bit frustrating. The characters are underdeveloped. I was put off by the heroine. Jesse created so many unnecessary drama through the story that in the end I just think she’s a silly woman. There were two scenes that made me lost it. The first was the one when she states she doesn’t need a condom, because she couldn’t get pregnant. Has if the only reason for using condom was because of that. Are there no STDs in Texas? Second, when she uses the word barren. Who uses this word now? And, please, who in her right mind in this or the previous century blames herself for not being able to conceive and doesn’t do any medical test whatsoever to know why?? I can cope with a predictable story. Sometimes, it’s just what I want. But I had a hard time relating to the characters and theirs motivations. So it’s more like a 1.5 ratting.
This is a second chance love story between Jessie and Cameron. They went to prom together and then Cameron left their small town to follow his dreams.
Jessie had dreams too but family circumstances meant that she remained in her home town and just settle for a life she hadn't planned on.
Seventeen years later and Cameron has returned for a family celebration. When he sees Jessie again, he is surprised about what he feels when he is around her and is determined to explore these feelings with her.
Jessie is stubborn and independent. Cameron is even more attractive than she remembers but she can't have him, there are just too many complications.
Can Cameron convince Jessie to take a leap of faith with him?
On my Cowboy Scale of Hotness I'll give this one 2 stars. It was just "ok". No sizzle, pretty predictable with no surprises. Cameron didn't come across as a real cowboy...He was raised on a ranch yes and wore a Stetson yes, but does that make a cowboy a cowboy? I think not!! There are many, many endearing qualities a cowboy has to have and it ain't calling you sweetheart and wearing a cowboy hat! This story was a bit drawn out and redundant. Characters were pretty nondescript. I really don't know what Jessie or Cameron look like, let alone the rest of the characters.
