Melissa Hartman has genius locked inside of her, and so do you. The question is: what kind of genius? The awesome potential of the human mind is an incredible thing, but it is also a very dangerous thing.
After several years of neurology research on autistics and children, Dartmouth psychology professor Frederick Carlisle has made a startling discovery. With a custom-made device and a simple set of steps, he can unlock fantastic mental abilities in his test subjects. But the brain is a delicate, complicated piece of equipment, and side-effects are inevitable; when one part of the brain ramps up, another will inevitably shut down...
Charcot's Genius is part one of the Great Minds series. It is the story of two very different people: an asylum inmate who is haunted by memories of the murder they say he committed, and a self-possessed first-year Dartmouth student who is trying to escape a small town and a destructive father. Both grapple with the effects of Professor Carlisle's treatment, and both discover powers of thought they never imagined possible. But while our Dartmouth first-year simply hopes to lead a normal life, the asylum inmate is out for revenge. He blames Carlisle for his condition and his imprisonment, and soon he will make his return to the Dartmouth campus.
I enjoyed reading this murder/mystery/thriller. It was a different approach in storytelling. The author brings together 4 college students who meet their first semester of college. They are drawn into a crazy professor's experiment. Meanwhile, the other crazy professor is released from a psychiatric facility. There is a basic plot and several subplots. My criticism of the book is that while the basic storyline is good, I would like to see the characters better developed. It seems that they were thrown together and I was only allowed to know Melissa. I was only given brief information about the other students and then bang they are dead! Dr. Kline was a great character but the reader is left hanging. This fabulous experiment with the brain is left dangling. I felt there were too many loose ends and that the story is not finished, but the reader is told that there might possibly be a sequel.
I really enjoyed this book by an author new to me. I didn't know what to expect and I got so much more. Sometimes it was a bit difficult keeping up with exactly was going on because of the number of years through which the story plays out. There are several mini subplots that occur. Though once you really get into the story you have a much better experience. There is so much going on you really need to stay on your toes to catch all the nuances that occur. And just who is the madman? That is another mystery to decipher. The happenings on the college campus are startling and shocking. Not probable but definitely an entertaining book.
Well I simply enjoyed this book. Character development was excellent and hidden agendas around every corner. Savour it though and you will be very glad you did.
This is a book about mental health turned bad. It was skillfully written and kept my attention. I loved it! Such an interesting subject and I look forward to reading more from Mr. Soutter.
Interesting story line with unusual characters and a different type of story. Doesn’t all of society wish secretly for that magic weight loss pill or genius pill? Do you ever wonder how many research labs are researching such things?
I will start by saying that I am sure that this story is not for everyone, but for me it was perfect. I have a psychology degree, and while I did not specialize in biopsychology, I studied the brain enough to thoroughly be entertained by this book.
I loved the premise, the characters, the unexpected twists... Highly recommended!
I got the order of these books confused and started reading the next one in the series first, which absolutely hooked me and meant I dashed back off to buy the first one second so I could carry on reading book 2 whilst fully informed. The writing flows superbly, the characterization is impeccable and the whole idea of the work is unaccountably wonderful.
there was a huge emphasis on Melissa and of course a lot left to answer, it's clear that, although this episode is over, there's more to come.
The initial chapters were a little strange because it flip-flopped between the two main protagonists too often. Nonetheless the main plot or idea was interesting and decent. Glad the author didn't try to make it as happily ever after ending, that would have ruined it. The scientific part is a little weird, but other than that, the human characters had some time to develop, some more than others.
A really enjoyable book, the science, was of course highly speculative, that's the point of the book. Some of the down to earth technology was a bit off too, which was not necessary. Good despite that.
I honestly didn't expect much out of this book. however, it was an exciting read, one with many plot twists that left me with my mouth open wide in surprise. highly recommend this book.
Very fast-paced psychological thriller that explores the boundaries of cognitive neuroscience. Fantastic characterizations and a well-developed plot. It's a mystery with multiple plot twists, most of which readers won't see coming. Highly recommended.
Great book! Goes into the mind of a brilliant and twisted genius who seeks revenge in a detailed and gruesome way. There were some weaker moments in the middle, but overall a great read!
