I Shot New York

Rate this book
This book offers a powerful new perspective on a much photographed subject: New York City, Veteran news photographer Ralph Ginzburg assigned himself the daunting task of photographing a different news event in The Big Apple on 365 consecutive days. The result is a year-long, 510-image extravaganza of the high drama and grandeur that are the everyday life of Gotham.

The style in which this book was created and designed was so simple that it inspired me to do the same for the city I live in. I'm sure this book must have sold a number of copies when it came out and seeing how adobe products were still something of the rave back then, you can tell how much the author used them in his book, as there are some images that are very pixelated.

The work of Mr. Ginzburg is that of quality. He noted in the beginning that he would take tons of pictures and have to pick just one to represent that day's feeling or event. Each picture in the book marks one day of the year and since this book is meant to showcase New York, I'm sure it must have been hard working select what picture makes it into the book.

I enjoyed this as a side read for other books I was reading at the time because it is mainly just pictures of events taking place around NYC with small captions underneath. Nothing hard, so it came in handy for those rides on the bus. For anyone that loves to look at photography books of city life, this is one to include just because of the project of the book. The idea was to showcase NYC in 1995 through just photographs.

So if you pass it in the library, like I did, stop for a moment and thumb through it, you might find a picture that hits a nerve, and if it does, then you know he did his job.
