What happened on this date in church history? From ancient Rome to the twenty-first century, from peasants to presidents, from missionaries to martyrs, this book shows how God does extraordinary things through ordinary people every day of the year. Each story appears on the day and month that it occurred and includes questions for reflection and a related Scripture verse.
This book really strengthened my faith during 2020. Learning of the struggles and sacrifices of others throughout history was a great motivator to hold firmly to God during difficult times.
This is fine (if not great) for those who love church history. If you especially listen to 5 Minutes in Church History, you’ll enjoy this. However, this book is a prime example of why I am not a fan of most devotionals: it tells a story and tacks on a Bible verse at the end. It’s just very light and does not offer much of an impact for the Christian. Come for the history lesson but get your Biblical start to the day elsewhere.
While grand perspectives of past events are both informative and necessary to understand the present, they are but the framework, a skeleton if you will. The flesh is constituted of the day-to-day minutiae of life. The One Year Christian History puts meat on the old bones of history.
Again, this is my second time through this book. I used it as part of my daily devotional reading. The stories ranged in time from 763 BC to 2000 AD. I remembered a few, but most I did not. Each entry was two pages, tied to the calendar date, had a Scripture to go with it, and it had a comment or a question to reflect upon. It is a good book, and I recommend it to anyone who has any interest in Christian history.
