A geek. A fat chick. A slow learner. A psycho suicide girl. A wannabe criminal. Five outcast high school kids with nothing in common except that nobody liked them. Five losers with nothing to look forward to but torment and harassment every day; nothing, that is, until they were introduced to the game. SEX, MARRY, KILL. An online game that would change their lives and give them power over others. They could do anything they wanted, sleep with anyone they wanted to, kill anyone who got in their way. Their every fantasy fulfilled. But at a mortal price. They soon discover that game will consume and destroy them unless they find some way to stop it before it’s too late. For fans of Stephen King and Joe Hill, a dark tale of horror, revenge and gaming gone lethally wrong.
Todd Travis’ interests include conspiracy theories, the poetry of Michael O’Donoghue and pop music and movies of the 80s. He is single and moves around a lot. His current whereabouts are at this time unknown. He dislikes cable news, views cellphones with suspicion and don’t even get him started on email. He also believes poker is not a sport and therefore should never be allowed on ESPN.
I found this book in one my BookBub mailers and with a name like that I thought I would give it a try.
It had been a while since I bought the book so I did not remember the premise. If I didn't have to go to work I would have read this book straight through. It is that kind of book. Which any reader knows are few and far between.
The characters of this book are teenagers. Usually that spells trouble as most authors with this character line up are generally very hard to read due to the vernacular and speech patterns they tend to use for the characters in this age group. In fairness most of those are geared towards the YA genre where their readers are in the same age range and can relate. Thankfully this book is not in that group.
The first chapters are spent getting to know the main players of the book and I found that I had a really good understanding of them and their motivations which as a writer I can assure you is not always a easy task to do.
To do this book justice I HIGHLY recommend that your read this book at night and in the dark or at least the last third of the book. I had the increased pulse and the small shot of adrenaline which is what makes a good book a great book.
This is not a genre that I typically enjoy but I can without pause recommend this to anyone looking for a enjoyable read. It is not filled with gore or silly ploys to try to scare you. It is just great writing.
1.5 STARS It felt too harsh to give a 1 star, but I really didn't like this book! I was strangely intrigued around the 50% mark which potentially earned the half star. I think this book might have made a good cheesy, awful but good, horror on Netflix. Like Unfriended maybe?
Sex, Marry,Kill reminded me of Point Horror book of my youth. That is also a compliment, as those books set me down the road of crime, mystery and horror books that’s have made up most of the reading within my life.
That being said, the horror in this book is too mild of a nature to be considered adult horror. However, Travis Todd is fast becoming a favourite author. His writing style is so easy to read, and never boring. Great book that was a fun read.
By now I've read almost all of Todd Travis' books. The dude entertains me. He's equally adept at horror and thrillers and this one is something of a mixture of both as five high school misfits discover an online game that gives them power, real supernatural black magic sort of power to take revenge on their many abusers. But in return they compromise their very souls...and turn goth, and some prices are just too high to pay, even for vengeance. Normally I stay far, far away from YA, but this one, despite all teen cast, didn't really read like one, at least not noticeably, and the characters were compelling enough to carry the story ably. The pacing as brisk as I've come to expect from Travis, very dialogue and action driven. One sitting read (3 hours), lots of fun and well worth the time.
I was searching for a sequel to Todd Travis's "Creatures of Appetite" (which I found will be out later this year...yeah!) when I found "Sex Marry Kill" so I downloaded it immediately. If you like mysteries, thrillers, or the paranormal, I highly recommend this book. It's a really fun read about 5 high school students that are lonely and without friends or family that care and are bullied and tormented by students and teachers. The geek, the depressed and suicidal goth, the overweight, the delinquent & the "slow" kid were all brought together through an on-line video game that forced them to exact revenge without consequences on their tormenters. Problem is there were really consequences and things got real scary real quick. I literally could not put it down -- also there was a little twist at the end that I loved and didn't see coming. I found that the premise of a demon possessed video game to be a really neat idea but aside from that the book really makes one think about what you would do if you get revenge on people that have hurt you or those you love. Great book!
I was blown away by the author's Creatures of Appetite, so perhaps my expectations for Sex, Marry, Kill were too high. It was still entertaining and fun, but seriously flawed by one chapter too many at the end. But there's no denying that Mr. Travis is a very talented author who writes carelessly but effectively, had the balls to dedicate his book to a guy he hates, made that hate the foundation for his story, has a great ear for dialogue, but with so many typographical errors he clearly doesn't give a s*** about editing.
A well-written, well-dialogued modern take on the "outsiders taken on their high school tormentors get more than they bargained for" story. The characters were believable outcasts without being caricatures. If I had to offer any criticism it would be that the adults in the story seem a bit one dimensional in constantly believing the bullies and not bringing any consequences to bear on them.
Sex, Marry, Kill is a twisted tale of revenge at its best! Who hasn't wanted revenge on someone before? These kids get that chance but at a price. Todd Travis provides a great background so that you really get to know these five troubled teens and you find yourself rooting for them to get their revenge at those who treat them so horribly. I have been a fan of Todd Travis since his first novel Creatures of Appetite. He has not disappointed with his short story collection The Living and The Dead, and he has proven himself yet again with his newest horror novel Sex, Marry, Kill. I recommend all of his books. Looking forward to reading more from him in the future.
This is probably the fastest I've ever read a book! If you've read my other reviews then you know that I like to take it slow with a good book...well...not this one!! It's like I was in a daze the entire time I was reading. We all have someone that has done us wrong that we'd like to get back at. This book takes you into 5 teen's lives that get to do just that. But is anything ever as easy as it seems? I promise you that you will not want to miss out on book!!! If I could give this book 10 stars...I totally would. Thank you Mr. Travis for writing a great book that will be on my mind for days to come!!!
Interesting book! Kept me reading it from first chapter to last. Good characters that were so easily recognized from school.... Not a horror fan but enjoyed this one.
Very good short book by an author I had not read before. Keep my interest, good plot, great story. Enjoyed the book and will read some more of his works.
A good solid story, could be considered YA given the main characters are young. A game we are familiar with taken to the extreme by a group of school outcasts due to a chance meeting with a mysterious stranger. A fast paced read bringing back some of the more crappy memories you may have from high school! Applying this version of the game to my former life at high school was fun (only hypothetically of course!)
This is one of those books that make me question why I even like reading.
And the worst thing about it was that the first half of it was actually very promising. Yes, the characters were all cliches, but I thought that would serve a purpose and I really expected this book to pack a punch of some sort, and to be something very unique. So I was very intrigued and kept waiting for the action to finally start, but once it did the book went downhill so fast.
Now, horror is one of the genres I am the most picky with. Either I love a horror novel or it doesn't work for me in the slightest. This definitely ended up belonging in that second category.
As I already mentioned, all the characters were cliches. An no, it didn't end serving a purpose, nor were they really breaking out of those cliches, at least not in a way that was at all interesting. And every single character was horrible, but not in an interesting way either. I like reading about unlikable characters, but they need some personality, they need to be genuinly interesting, and no one in this book was. They also weren't flashed out that well, mainly Shakes did a lot of things that seemed out of character, and I don't care if it was the magic that made him do that, it was confusing and felt so lazy and convenient.
And what even was that "romance" plotline (I refuse to even call it a romance because nothing about it was romantic). There was zero chemistry or relationship development between those characters, they were just randomly thrown together to create conflict, and also cause obviously every YA novel needs a romance, right? The entire second half of the book was painful to read, but the romance even more so than the rest. On top of that there were several quotes about how every boy masturbates/wants to have sex and also a lot of heteronormative bullshit. Honestly I might just be way too gay for half the books I pick up, and that's why I end up disliking so many of the things I read.
I think I would have either needed more explanation as to how everything worked, or no information at all. The way we learn about the black magic responsible for how the game works and how it all started was really boring to me. I would have needed to see all of that way more flashed out. Or the book could have given us barely any information at all, which would have made it all very ominous and creepy. Either one I might have liked, but the middle road that the story ended up taking didn't work for me at all.
As the story progresses the magic makes the characters wear makeup and dress in a goth style, which could have added to the vibe of the story and been an interesting element, but it was all done in a way that came across as very judgemental towards that subculture, so all of that didn't sit well with me either.
There was also a lot of slutshaming, fatshaming, and just bullying in general, some of which was needed for the plot, but some of which was also totally unnecessary. The book also uses the r-word for a disabled character, as well as the f-slur for a straight character, who other characters think is gay. And there was simply no reason for using these slurs, it's not like it added anything to the story, and it also wasn't done to challenge them.
I mightn't have picked this book because of the title. It was a familiar term and wasn't sure what the author could do with it. However since I had liked all the other books I have read from him so far gave it a try. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it quite a bit. It isn't a gruesome book. The characters are well fleshed out. There are multiple bully's and the perspective of it gives you something to think about. Enjoyed it. Next...
Woah this was off the rack thrilling to read! Such young people with so much hardship seeking bonds they can't have. These five young people can be anyone of these kids today. The way social media and the internet is setup, there's nothing you can't transfer online or get to online. The way the real demon attached itself to the inner demons of the young characters insecurities was heartbreaking. Especially Ed he was my favorite character "English Chicken!" was a great way to break the ice for five misunderstood youngsters seeking friendships they never imagined could exist. I just wonder if Danris burnt the bridge and set the tortured kids soul free by breaking the spell, why is the game still going? Is it only finished for the furious five, or it's waiting for the next five to figure out how to stop it?
It's a fast paced, crazy ride to the last page!! It was intriguing as well as very relatable! We've ALL been the odd man/woman our Mt in a group one time or another!! Be careful what you wish for!!!!
This is a story that becomes very spooky as you read through to the end. It's about five teens in Portland, Oregon who are not popular in high school and who get involved with an on-line game: Sex, Marry, Kill. Of the five, two had wished they did not go on the October senior bus trip where they meet the mysterious Mr. Herman Kaminski. Darin is called Detention by many as he sells drugs; Valerie is the hot, suicidal chick; Faye known as the fat chick; Ed, the semi-retard; and Shakes is the undersized geek. Mr. Herman wasn't normal himself ... about 50 years old, skinny with spider-like limbs, big hawkish nose, dressed all in black Gothic clothing and wearing face makeup. Coach Jerome Healy is the chaperon for the trip with the assistance of shy teacher, Ms. Arnett. Coach Healy is a tormentor of these five students who are all routinely bullied. When Mr. Herman joins the 'loser' table at the dinner restaurant, Coach Healy tries to remove him, threatening him with bodily harm. But two beefy waiters remove the coach out the door. Mr. Herman explains to the five teens that he once was just like them ... an outcast, but he had found a way to empower himself. They can also, he explains to them if the five of them become good, close friends. He introduces them to the game ... Sex, Marry, Kill. Only these five teens can play the game ... no one else. This is a very creative story which provides good descriptions of these five teens with deep shadows impacting their lives. The story could use another spell check as there are several misplaced or missing words (I'm not knocking the cellphone texting of the teens, we all know how words are cut). This is definitely a spooky story to read before Halloween arrives in five days.
You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so. Shelley MA
Five social outcasts have one thing in common, they have no friends, not even each other until a man asks them are they interested in a computer game that will get back at all those that made their lives miserable while they are on their school field trip. One of their chaperones, the sports coach, tries to handle this gentleman the same way he does the misfits only to have the tables turned and Mr. Healy was thrown from the restaurant. Mr. Herman treated Valerie, Darin, Ed, Shakes, and Faye like royalty and ignored the rest of the kids in the class at the restaurant. He reminded them of the website when it was time to leave and reminded them that it must only the five of them when they played the first time. Before he got to the door, Mr. Herman turned back to the five and asked a few personal questions about Mr. Healy. The next day, Mr. Healy died in an accident. The five finally got together and started playing Sex, Marry, Kill. At first, the things that were happening could be mere coincidence, but then they all started changing and losing time. Shakes and Faye were changing for the worse. Darin, Valerie, and Ed wanted to stop but the other two didn't. They were high on the power the game was giving them. Finally Darin and Valerie took a trip back to where they met Mr. Herman. Would they get the answers they were looking for or more questions?
I didn't think it would be any good but in all honesty, I was pleasantly surprised. While not exactly a breakthrough, original plot, it does touch upon the problem with bullying in today's world. Teachers do not care and tend to protect the abusers, absent parents, and a general indifference to the other classmates makes this tale all too familiar and somewhat realistic. However, I don't know if it was the author's intention but it seemed like a modern, horror sequel to the "Breakfast Club". The main characters in the story did change and evolve throughout the book but I felt like Faye and Ed were left behind in the shuffle of all the other characters. Despite the criticism, I really did have a load of fun reading this book. It took me back to my high school days where I felt I was the weirdo and the outcast until I finally had the nerve to stand up for myself. It felt strange to go back into that mentality but I think everyone still harbors some feelings about their high school years. 4 out of 5 stars. Would read more stories from the author if there was a bit more editing as well.
uh... why do their clothes start changing into black and stuff? Its been years since I read it so basically if you play sex, marry, kill game with peoples names you start looking more and more spoopy gothy woo-woo. Well sign me up! AAAAAAHH 🖤🖤🖤 "THERE'S SUPPOSED TO BE A LESSON- me: sorry can you be quiet im on the phone *talking to friend on phone* yeah so like if you play this game you get free spooky shit I KNOW RIGHT? I HOPE I GET SCENTED CANDLES!!!
It was the class trip that brought them together. The class trip, and… fate. The tables in the restaurant resemble the high-school cafeteria; the students have divided into multiple sub-groups and cliques. Jocks, stoners, mean girls, etc. ‘Birds of a feather’. Except for the last table. The five kids seated around the last table have nothing in common except for their social standing. They’re labeled as losers, each of them tormented and harassed by their so-called peers. Loners. A ‘geek‘. A ‘fat chick‘. A ‘slow learner‘. A ‘psycho suicide girl‘. A ‘wannabe criminal‘. Together, these outcasts will become The Furious Five, and it’s their turn to be on top. Anything they desire will be theirs, and what they desire most is revenge. Full review posted on BBB.
I'm sure most of us played some variation of the game "Sex, Marry, Kill". Typically you and your friends would write a list of three people, and you all had to pick which you would have sex with, which you would marry, and which you would kill.
A group of five misfits, outcasts at school, obtain the power to play this game... with real outcomes. Who will they have to have sex? Who will marry? And how many will... die?
Very engaging read, the build up was good, though the ending felt a little rushed. All in all a enjoyable horror based on a school yard game, starring the less popular kids... and all the anger they have repressed.
This thriller is fast paced and entertaining to read. Five outcasts come together to play a game that a stranger invited them to. The power, control and damage they can do hold consequences they were not prepared for. Their personalities altered by the effects of the game, friends turning to enemies and a powerful pull of the corruption taking over. I was surprised to come to the ending so quickly but I was completely satisfied with it. Very eager to see what more this author puts out this year. Definitely started 2014 with a bang!!
This author is seriously going to have to write a LOT of books. This book was very different from "creatures of appetite", but just as good. And while I said "WHAT??????" and practically threw the book with "Creatures" (and would have if I didn't have a huge respect for books and know I was going to read that one again for sure!) Sex Marry Kill ended with me laughing out loud!!!! Todd Travis zaps you in and traps you with his realistic prose, character development and haunting storylines. One heck of a good read!!!
